Gaming Laptop 1800cad or less no restrictions

Since i'm looking for a gaming laptop under 1800 I'd like to add I currently have a omen 16 with the 3060 and its a great laptop however im looking for more performance, I'm pretty sure I can sell it for 1800 cad hence the title. I'm looking for a 3080 laptop on a sale or a 3070 full fat model with good specs and trust the opinions of you Ol NBRs. I'm down for any size, but prefer somewhat thinner, as long as its not as @papusan would say or @Mr. Fox castrated. open too all suggestions

It is unfortunate, but I don't think you can actually buy an excellent laptop anymore that has "no restrictions" because 100% of them have at least a couple of glaring defects relating to performance restrictions and/or thermal management. Since you already have it, I'd say just keep the Omen and make the best of it.

 

Even if it wasn't necessarily the best choice, the reality is that nothing available will be remarkably superior to the Omen. Nobody builds/sells anything remarkable in laptops. Build a desktop instead.

oh cmon I dont have that many laptops in and out. I was just thinking there must be a laptop around 1800 with a 3080...im in it this time for the long run although i wish i bought a 2060 laptop 2 years ago....would have been the best bang for the buck

Ok from my recollection it was a 1060 laptop, then a 1650 and now a 3060, it's not that much I guess but sounds like a hassle to go find the best specs for the best bang. I guess if you enjoy that go for it. My point was that you can get ultimate performance with a desktop, done for a few years and you could just upgrade the gpu in that case rather than the whole system. Want more system ram, skys the limit now in desktops, more vram just get another gpu, a LOT less fan noise while playing, want to go to 4k just buy another screen etc

 

What's your objective here too? Is the 3060 not giving you something you really want? Is it FPS, resolution, high enough settings, lack of possible system RAM, lack of gpu vram? I mean for me I don't need 2k/4k or highest settings in my games, I still think 1k high settings around 60fps is totally fine, especially on a small 15.6 screen. I can use DSR to upscale to near 2k but obviously it's just a form of AA on my 1080 screen, but I could output it to a 2k screen, no plans on buying a 2k+ screen though. I accept ever lower settings in new games for a few years no big deal. Elden Ring looks absolutely amazing to me at 1k/~60 mix of settings with some stutter in places but mostly very smooth fast panning etc There are a million games that my 2060m can kill, maybe 1-2 per year that are AAA ones I want to play that I have to turn it down.

You're not going to find a RTX 3080 laptop at that price range. Correct me if i am wrong but isnt 1800 cad is around $1400 USD? if so then thats the average price of a RTX 3060 laptop which your OMEN is. I dont know what type of performance you are looking for but you should keep your OMEN because an RTX 3060 can handle every game out there currently plus you're going to be paying a lot more for an RTX 3080 laptop. Another thing if you go thinner you're gonna get a lower wattage version of a GPU that'll have less performance than the full wattage version.

There is always diminishing returns as you run up the mountain. You would likely need to sell your current machine and then keep an eye out for a used listing. That or buy into the x170 and build it up over time.

 

I have been liking what Lenovo has been putting out the past few years and it may be closer to what you might be looking for in terms of form factor.

 

It would also help if you use the template so that people can properly look at the outlets you may or likely to consider buying from and pitch a proper deal.

maybe its about as good as it gets for a 3060 laptop.....but i cant imagine having a 3080...perhaps in a few years i should just go the egpu route

The 3060 is the best bang for buck GPU on the laptop side of things this GPU generation. The laptop 3080 performs about as good as the desktop 3060 TI does, so I'd suggest keeping your HP Omen and waiting for the next generation of laptops if you want a performance upgrade for a reasonable price.

 

If you absolutely need the performance now, there isn't any 3080 laptop that is reasonably priced. You'll have to shell out at least an extra $1000 to get one, and it'll be about a 35% increase in performance over a 3060. If you're ok with a portable SFF desktop, you can try going that route, which is what I would recommend with the current state of things with the laptop market. The 3060 TI seems to be the best bang for buck GPU on the desktop side this gen.

It is difficult to find value in any kind of new tech. Everything is priced for more than it's worth on both mobile and desktop, and a lot of the expensive cutting edge stuff has compromises. If what you have is getting the job done, the best plan is to do nothing at all and keep using what you already have. You can expect that new stuff is going to include everything you hate about what you already have, plus some new crap you're going to dislike that wasn't invented yet the last time money burned a hole in your pocket

I'm a firm believer in don't upgrade till you see a need. If your Omen is handling it close to your expectations save your coin and wait for newer models and/or for your laptop to suddenly stop performing to contemplate upgrades/changes.

 

Only reason I upgraded from my P870TMw/ 1060  to an X170SM-G w/ 2080 Super was because WoW Shadowlands suddenly reduced my normally 60-80fps @ Ultra 10 to 20-30fps at level 7 in some areas. A need presented itself and I was left with upgrading the GPU or selling it (parted it out) and replacing the entire thing. Now I'm running around at 144fps just about everywhere.

 

If you are unhappy with the gaming performance your only options are 3070(ti) / 3080(ti). Check out some reviews and see the performance delta between your results and what they are seeing  to give you some idea of a baseline and go from there.

 

Your laptop does have a TB4 port so you could contemplate an external GPU when home.

Many of them are little more than a glorified smartphone. Hardware is being toned down and the OS dumbed down. That said, they are not as unpleasant and cumbersome.

I would keep your notebook you have now.  Maybe upgrade the internals a bit.  Add some more ram, etc.  May help with the speeds.

I was thinking of upgrading to 64gb 3200 ram and getting a 2tb ssd for games. I guess thats one route. at 1080p I guess it maxes almost all games. its just i'm running it off my 4k/120 tv and need moar powa.
