Hello, I'm new here and I've been using Alienware M18xR2 for a long time. I was one of the first to upgrade to 980m. Now I see new super different cards. I want to switch to an RTX series card. Which cards have been tried? Does the HP series Quadro RTX 3000-5000 series work? I also saw the new RTX 3060 - 3080mxm. Has anyone tried it? Which card do you think would be better for me to switch to?

The RTX 3000 will drop right in, being the easyist "Not the HP Z Book model". The RTX 5000/4000 will work but heatsink modification is necessary w/HP Z Book model.

The HP model requires some modes but nothing too difficult. I got an extra heatsink to mod, so now I have a ready made for my M18xR2. I might install two rtx 3000 just for the fun of it!

I didn't take any pics but the m18xr2 primary GPU heatsink I used a belt sander clamped upside down w/240 grit sand paper and took off like a 1/16" from the fins then had to clean out every grain of metal between the fins. And it dropped right in. I packed some stiff foam around the gap between the fan and the fins and its running cool and smooth

What drivers are we using for these? The Quadro ones or geforce?

Well I am not the stable 1 to ask, since I recently got the RTX 3000 for m17x r4 and RTX 4000 for m18x r2 I have been swapping drivers from Game Ready notebook/Desktop to Quadro drivers and also from Beta and older ones but presently have Game Ready 546.29 I think is most recent. I think I notice 3DMark scores varying between different drivers. So it is becoming an obsession reinstalling different drivers. To make things worse my Clevo has 3 operating systems 1 Win 10 and 2 Win 11s one with GTX 1080 SLI and one not SLI. So swapping drivers and running benches has been my way of torturing my PCs. At least I am having Fun!

Did you modify the .inf with both cards on it? A separate line for each card and maybe the section part trying different section #ers. Right now I am waiting to reflash my RTX 4000 max Q cause I lost the original vBios and no other vBios is working so it is dead until I find vbios 90.04.2A.00.0C. Techpowerup does not have it but I tried all they have listed and I had to reflash with neoprogrammer just to get the m18x r2 to even see the card. Now I have 2 P4000s sitting in a box.

just use nvcleanstall, to install the driver. As for the Bios of your RTX 4000, I have this, try it and let me know.

Thats the 1 the seller sent me. It was the only 1 he had backed up. It did work but something happened, my card died after alot of testing with demo's and different Nvidia driver installs. Now the P4000 is working fine so the RTX 4000 has an issue. Thinking about buying a hot air station and swapping out some mosfets

Thanks for the vBios

another thing about this card on the die it says

what QUAESAMPLE means I am not sure but the seller said because" it was tested at the factory"

Hi and thanks for this thread🫶🏻

Undusted my 2014 AW18 with 4700mq and dual 780m. I just bought the 4940mx and a PNY RTX 3000 MXM. I unfortunately can’t find a DDR3 set with 2133mhz anymore in my country. Maybe someone have a good source or eBay?

Anyways I will probably ask for help when all parts arrive and I’m doing the bios flash and settings🤣

Happy modding!

I don't know if anybody knows this or if its a glitch I found, But only on Night Raid if I record a GPU-Z screen with game bar my score doubles

10 773 RTX 3000 i7-3920XM M18xR2

25 162 RTX 3000 i7-3920XM M18xR2

If anybody can verify this give some results. I found this by accident. I wanted to see where the throttling was happening so I recorded speccy screen then ran Night Raid but this only works for Night Raid and no other test

Hi everyone.

I am new here but I read all knowledge here ( and archive on "old" forums ) few times but still have a questions.

I ordered Quadra RTX3000M, seller wrote to me that one buyer runs it on m18x r2 and i hope it was true.

Few questions:

My sons ( I'm almost fifty but still play games 🙂 ) have m17x r4 with GTX680M and K4100M, my third son has Alienware14 with GTX765, we have old m15 with some ATI too - all of this Alienware has visible both card in device menager or only intel hd if you change to only integrated GPU.

I bought m18x r2 ( almost not use Nebula red ) with 7970 and have visible in device menager only Radeon GPU or intel HD if change mode to integrated GPU.

Last weekend I installed unlocked BIOS A11 v2.0 but it still not change it. I have only one card visible ( Radeon or Intel hd ). Is it because of Radeon HD7970 or something is wrong ??

On all 5 Alienware I have Windows 11.

Second question: What I should do or what change in unlocked bios to run RTX3000M or I need only to put it on MXM slot ?? Need I change GPU mode from PEG to another ??  I afraid 8 beep. In m17x r2 changing gpu takes 10 sec, in m18x r2 about 20 minutes to start. I know about inf mods but ask about hardware side not driver.

I learn fast but need to understand what I learn 🙂

Hello, in order for two cards (built-in and discrete) to be displayed in device managers, you need to enable the SG (Switchable Graphics) mode. This is exactly what you need to install RTX 3000 and the like, because they don't have LVDS(our internal video output of the monitor) support. This mode will work with your 7970 too, don't be afraid.

I changed it and it works . I have both card in device manager  Thank you very much. Now I'm ready for RTX3000 🙂

By the way... I have dell GFX970M in home but GPU gives me only 8 beeps ( checked in both m17x r4 and my m18x r2 ).

Does the 970 also need SG mode to work??

970M does not need SG mode, but unlocked bios is required, it will work with it even in PEG mode. so, the problem is in the video card, in any case. I advise you to try turning on SG, I think that your laptop will start, but the video card may not be detected (in this case, most likely the video card is completely broken or the vbios is not suitable), and if it is detected, but there is a code 43 when trying to install drivers, it can be restored. maybe the vbios is inappropriate or the memory chip is broken, well, there are many options. try SG mode and see if it is detected in the BIOS. if not, then maybe it’s worth trying to reflash the vbios or it’s broken.
