Precision 7680 / Precision 7780 pre-release discussion (Raptor Lake, 2023)

Recommended Posts

@Dell-Mano_G

I was wondering if you could take a look at these quick questions regarding the new 7000 series systems.  Small list this time, it seems at a glance that the systems aren't much different than last year's.

  1. Am I right in assuming that there is no PCIe5 support in these systems?  (Intel has been teasing it for their latest HX CPUs but it doesn't seem to be of much use yet, with no discrete GPUs and very few SSDs supporting it.)
  2. Other than the CPU & GPU refresh, are there any notable changes to point out?
  3. Is the "thin chassis" option for the Precision 76X0 gone?
  4. Can you share anything about CPU & GPU power limits for these systems?  Have power limits been increased at all from Precision 7X70?

Thank you.

Just to clarify, the Precision 5680 does have a 165W power supply option.  It also has a vapor chamber for the high end GFX, for performance reasons.

Will that be a new USB-C power adapter from Dell only, or is that following the USB-C 2.1 spec which supports up to 240W?

Any chance to get my WD19DC dock working as 165W power supply for a 5680?

Still hoping for a 5880 or 5890 or XPS18 with 1920x1200 or 2560x1600 and brightness above 400 cd/m2 better above 450 for outdoor usage - maybe next time 🙂

Thanks for the clarification it’s been unclear on which models actually have vapour chamber meanwhile competitors are making a big thing of it. I’m glad the 5680 has some extra power headroom vs the 5570 and 5770 also.

Which cards qualify as high end requiring the vapour chamber?

Hi,  I have some questions about 7780:-

1. Back cover SSD opening, this option is not seen in US dell website but found at Australia dell, is it really available in 7780?

2. MY local dell said the WWAN option is not available.  Will the 4 antenna cables be provided if purchase without WWAN card?

3. Sodimm is not found in US dell, but available in Australia.  Is Sodimm option available now from the start?  MY local dell only offers CAMM.

4. ECC ram is mentioned in 7780 spec sheet, but seems like not available everywhere ?

I am from MY, precision laptop is not listed at all in local Dell website and have to special order with sales rep so i can't see available customization options.

Thanks.

Hi All,

Did anyone of you understand the double precision (FP64) rating of the RTX 5000 Ada mobile version?

https://nvdam.widen.net/s/dmdqnnwcmk/proviz-mobile-linecard-update-2653183

Here (https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/rtx-5000-mobile-ada-generation.c4097) it is reported as 515.3 GFLOPS.

However, the website mentions that these values might not be correct because the product has not been released yet.

Also, if this would be true, it would be a lower performance than the previous two models (A5500 and A5000)

That is why I am wondering..

Thanks in advance for your feedback

Not this gen.

There are other updates but those are the main ones.

Thin chassis is still around.

Not at this time.

We are the only ones with a 165W adapter.

The WD19DC will work with the 5680.  It is the only dock that will provide enough power to the system to run it at full performance.  If we use a different single type C dock, you will need to also plug in the 165W type C adapter to for full performance.

Precision has a 16" performance thin system, XPS does not.  They still have a 15" & 17".  Our 5680 scales to high performance than the 17".

Yes the SSD door is available on both the 7680 & 7780.

WWAN options are available.   Your local Dell person should go and review the training documents on the products.  If you don't order a WWAN you will not get the antenna's for WWAN.

CAMM memory and SoDIMM interposer are both available globally.  Again, I would reference your local Dell person to review the training docs.

ECC memory is available the same as it was last gen, with the SoDIMMs only via an interposer.

I'm not sure about this gen, but in past gens there has been a restriction preventing you from choosing both WWAN and the UHD display together; you had to pick one or the other.  (I have Precision 7770 with UHD display and it did not come with WWAN antennas.)

Hi I was told by my contacts ECC ram was a post launch item with a May timeframe for availability?

long term I’m hoping for price parity between CAMM and So-DIMM and ultimately ECC CAMM modules to make the choice easier. For CAE workloads ECC is recommended but then we are limited to 64GB since 7770 generation with SO-DIMM

Yes you are right.  the Sales rep is able to get the WWAN option after selecting 1920x1080 LCD.  So the only option left for me is either to get 4k LCD and get after market antenna & cable (extremely rare); or get 1080p with antenna and change the lcd to 4k later (waste of $$).  another option is just use hotspot or mobile modem 😆

WWAN version uses a different screen enclosure/back panel as well. Instead of all aluminum, there is a separate plastic bit at the top where the antennas are.

Does it mean the system can accept power up to 210w with the WD19DC plugged in?

My 5760/5770 meet battery drainage when the system has a high workload, good to know Dell tried to improve the power option for the 5000 series.

Yes the 5680 can accept the power, and take advantage of it under heavy loads.

Hope Dell can provide a model like a combination of WD22TB4 and WD19DC, so that users can still have ability to connect 2 thunderbolt devices when the WD19DC dock connected😃

Indeed a bit overdue an update for the wd19DC/S would also like to see it able to deliver the full 240W, although this would need a bigger power supply in the input of course. hopefully we won’t have to wait for the refresh of the 7000 series chassis, usually 3 generations so whatever comes after the 7690/7790 (new naming scheme? 🙂 )

The WD19DC/S have been pretty reliable for us after the pain of the TB16 and TB18, I hope that continues with whatever replaces it! we standardised on these despite having a mix of power requirements in Precision 3000, 5000, 7000 + a few latitudes thrown in. Just means anyone can use any desk/meeting room by plugging in 1/2 cables. Nobody has ever complained about performance and combined 100% CPU/GPU loads are rare but would be nice to have the full 240W to know we are getting the best performance.

Dell has consistently done two generations per chassis since the Precision 7000 series launched.  We could be due for a chassis refresh next year.  I think that, if they do that, they will go ahead and change the naming scheme as well.

Ah yes you are right! Only 2 I must have been thinking 3 inclusive when actually it’s just 2 then we usually get a new chassis on the 7000 series. Given we have purchased every mobile workstation dell have ever had you would think I’d remember! So yeh I’d predict new dock to go alongside the 7690/7790

then we just need to start guessing what the generation after will be named 🙂

Indeed there is surely space with the size of the 7770/7780 bezels compared to the 7670/7680 screen bezels.

I give our team a choice when it comes to replacement time and vast majority still prefer the 17.3 inch form factor pretty sure they wouldn’t turn down a bigger screen!

Few more takers for the smaller 7000 series after the switch to 16inch form factor with an improvement in relative performance and screen real estate, but the ratio is more than 9:1 in favour of 17.3 inch form factor!

I hope they do keep the larger form factor given HP and Lenovo both dropped it. 16 inch makes more sense for the more portable options like the new 5680, 17.0 perhaps took the size an weight a little beyond that category

The 17.3 inch display does not show enough vertical lines of resolution. The 16 inch display has 2400 lines and as a result, I find the 17.3" (which I have) to be inadequate.  I have always used the highest capacity Precision 77x0 laptops for many years, and when docked with two external screens they work great. However whenever I have to go on the road I find the vertical resolution limitation extremely crippling.  If the next generation will have the extra resolution of the 76x0 models I can stay with Dell, otherwise I will be forced to find some kind of alternative solution.

Hopefully we will see 18" 3840 x 2400 soon  although I have to admit that I prefer 2560 x 1600 and no scaling due to its compatibility advantages.

+1 for the QHD plus unfortunately still too many bits of software where the experience for 4K is not good particularly at high scaling levels needed for such a small display. 16:10 is spot on for me, my first Precision laptops were the M90/M6300 with 16:10 (17.6 inch?) screen

I’ve used a few 4k laptops for a couple of on and off weeks at a time and still not convinced of the benefit at typical viewing distances where as QHD I think is a great balance.
