Radeon 7900 Series

Sandy Bridge

Recommended Posts

AMD has announced the high end of the Radeon 7000 series.  $900 or $1000 (XT vs XTX), no power supply upgrades, different connectors, or larger cases required: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/11/amds-next-gen-radeon-rx-7900-xtx-and-7900-xt-launch-december-13-start-at-999/

Raw teraflop performance is between the 4080 and 4090, and is supposed to be about 1.5x a Radeon 6950 XT on average, at 4K resolution.

Thoughts?  Takers?

It's definitely higher-end than I'm looking for, and more than I'm looking to spend, but if the actual metrics match the AMD slides, it looks a lot more reasonable than GeForce 4000 to me.

AMD's RDNA 3 generation is looking pretty promising. I'm hoping we can actually find cards for MSRP.

Personally, I'm interested in seeing a 7800 XT, hopefully for the same price as the 6800 XT launched at.

that looks sick. i have the feeling AMD lets their partners have significantly more leeway in designing their custom GPUs vs. Ngreeedia.

I don't game, I am a creator.  I am wondering how these will do in resolve, lumiar neo, DxO pl6 and others.  I moved to the Nvidia side of things when AMD bought out ATI.  I figured they were going to make their cards better for AMD chipsets instead of intel, so I moved on. Maybe when I build my new system next year, I will move back to the Radeon side of the coin.

It fits in your case is probably a good start, and 200 dollars cheaper than Nvidia equivalent.

That all being said prices are too high all around for me.

It's not two generations behind on power, it's a few points back on the 4080 for less money.  Plus, from everything I can read about it, it's better for the software I run.  I don't care about benchmarks etc, I care about real world applications. That being said, I am going in a different direction for this year anyways.  My son has shown an interest in doing video, photo and other creative applications himself, so I am going to build my system from parts in my XPS and upgrade a few other things, and take the XPS and pop some parts in it for him.  A twofer for the price of one.

Right on.  That's different.  If it were the 4090 it would be different. But no, a new card not being able to easily be faster than the previous gen card is not good.  Still, for what I do, I think the radeon is better.

Yeah.  They do.  I've always been a Radeon and Intel user.  Until Radeon dropped off the radar in the past few years.  I may try one again though.

This is the XFX variant and non reference design (3x 8 pin power connectors). This is a custom Merc card.

Until he checks all the non reference designs for the same mask....well.......there you go. 🙂

I would be curious to see him check cards like the Nitro+ and Taichi for their mask designs.

Also that crack on the PCB, yikes!

I always consider Sapphire for AMD cards. They really are the old school EVGA of the AMD world. It's usually Sapphire and Asrock now for card consideration unless you can find a killer priced variant like the Powercolor I picked up for $720 total to my door. 🙂

And he's right, anti-sag is a must for the bulky GPUs and hilarious the owner dropped a dumbbell on his GPU!That's a first! 🤣

NWR declaring the Sapphire the best version of the 7900xtx (timestamped) and overall I'd agree. I don't think he has done a Taichi 7900xtx repair.
