Ever since I found out about mobile workstations, I've always wanted to have a Dell Precision 7720, both because of its design, which I personally think is really cool (especially its internal layout), and because its the last Precision with an MXM slot before Dell switched to the DGFF format starting with the 7XX30 series. Then one day, while browsing OLX, I was lucky enough to find a Dell Precision 7710 for a low price. The laptop was listed as "for parts" and untested, and its specifications weren’t provided, but from the pictures in the listing, it was clear that many parts were missing, such as the heatsink + fans, keyboard, RAM, SSD, AC adapter, etc. Even so, I thought it was a good deal, so I bought it. Here are the pictures from the seller: I believe this will be a very interesting project, so in this thread I will post the progress of my journey in refurbishing/upgrading this amazing machine.

HP Elitebook 8570W - is it still good ? Hardware modifications
Will replied to GuitarG's topic in Custom Builds
@GuitarG Hey, I recently got an EliteBook 8560w for cheap. Sorry to bother you, but would you mind answering a few questions please? 1 - Do you know if it's possible to run a quad-core processor on a dual-core motherboard (P/N 684318-001)? Would it work normally? 2 - Do you know if it's possible to swap the 8560w motherboard with the one from the 8570w? I previously swapped the motherboard of a 8760w with the one from a 8770w and everything worked fine, so I’m guessing it might be possible with the 8560w too. 3 - Is it true that the display will not have a back light until the driver is installed with maxwell cards? Im planning to maybe get a M2200.- 259 replies

Can't adjust brightness on M4800
Will replied to K4sum1's topic in Pro Max & Precision Mobile Workstation
Did your 8770w have a DreamColor screen? I'm asking this because I can't adjust the screen brightness of my 8770w neither with an M3000M nor with an M4000M, and i have a 1600x900 non DreamColor screen. The brightness level is stuck both in Windows and Linux. Maybe with a DreamColor screen I could adjust the screen brightness? -
Does anyone know who is the manufacturer (like ADLINK, Zotac) or where this GTX 1070 MXM came from? I mean, which notebook/system did it originally come from? I'm really curious about it since this is the most easily found GTX 1070 MXM model currently. I've always seen people recommending the oddly shaped MSI's GTX 1070. Does anyone know how this standard form factor GTX 1070 compares to the MSI's 1070 in terms of power limit/TDP/VRM? Thanks.

Hey bro, could you please tell me how you retrofitted the ZBook G2 fingerprint reader into the 8570w?- 259 replies

Hello, guys. I'm willing to pick up either a ZBook 17 G5 or a ZBook 17 G6 as they were the last notebooks released with MXM support, but I couldn't find anything about upgrading or downgrading their graphics card. About the ZBook 17 G5, I would like to put a GTX 1070 on it, has anyone tested it? I think it would work since originally the G5 came with Pascal GPUs, but I'm afraid of having some type of whitelist in the BIOS. And about the ZBook 17 G6, has anyone tested if GPUs from older architectures work? Like Pascal and Maxwell 2.0
