5800X3D is out, as expected it is closer to 12900K way close at TPU. In gaming ofc. And the benches from all places I lost trust I posted when NBR was there about how 10900K in TPU's review was leading the charts on 11900K review and suddenly when testing other CPUs the 10900K takes a massive backseat. Anyways the CPU loses out to the $100 cheaper 5800X in some tests because ofc the Clock speed got slashed and the OC tuning is castrated from factory. I wonder who will buy this in 2022 sure most of them want to avoid the big DDR5 thing on Intel platforms but still a 5900X is better choice without a single question. Speaking about the WHEA and USB, well the saga continues..7 days older thread many users report it along with OP and another guy in the subreddit apparently getting this with Crosshair VIII Extreme. Nothing will solve this problem. Because I/O Die is flaky and AMD couldn't fix it at all, without completely altering the specifications of the Processor and the Chipset. Thanks to zero documentation. Nobody knows what to do except pray to god. And instead of utilizing this opportunity to fix the entire stack of Zen 3 with X3D bump and Specification changes addressing the fixes, they do not do anything. Also there was another issue reported on how Adrenalin Software AMD Drivers package Ryzen Master into them and causing some weird glitches altering CPU settings, currently the fix is to create a new GPU profile. Zen 4 with AMD first they need to get the damn memory controller proper without any of those nonsensical issues of instability and primary focus must be on the Firmware of all things. What's the use of the product when the Software is very poor. And finally the whole IOD nonsense. I do not doubt it would have ultimate performance boost after-all they axed X3D refresh to make it appear strong. -
What phone are you daily driving currently?
Ashtrix replied to Katja's topic in Mobile Devices & Gadgets
Used to run an LG V30S, 12GB. SD835 SoC, 400GB microSD. Bootloader Unlocked thanks to some based dev in LG they left that WTF method open because they shuffled a lot of C level execs due to poor financials and US Bootloader policy got thrown under the bus. Mine runs Stock Oreo official firmware with build.prop modified to enable EQ presets as LG Korea did not update it properly, and ofc Rooted with magisk. Unfortunately the display broke, USB port broke, speaker is busted will try to get it repaired if possible since it has been the best Android set experience never slowed down since day 1 for me and the 3.5mm jack ESS9218P is exceptional world class DAC AMP, the other remarkable ones which I used were Motorola Milestone, Samsung Galaxy S, and OnePlus 3, all rooted and Bootloader unlocked. Milestone is dead got replacement and sold it off long time back, rest work. Currently running OnePlus 3, Resurrection Remix OS 7.1.2 Android based on SultanXDA custom Kernel, Magisk installed, Vanced as well before takedown. Couldn't find a good Android set anymore. Lack of HW options, there's only a single phone today that has Micro SD slot and a 3.5mm jack - Sony Xperia 1 Mark III. And from my research that phone lacks good battery due to poor optimization and 4K OLED plus that modem is not great, eating away all the battery, then the Android 10 and up killed Storage entirely by making the Filesystem like Apple iOS and External storage completely nuked, which causes Xperia 1 to have slow I/O from SD card slot as they did not fix it. Then the whole 5G mmWave nonsense and band support. It doesn't have great 5G due to lack of mmWave, that tech also drains battery heavily. LG V60 is having a hole which I cannot stand, and it's locked to American Carrier Mafia. The Android OS is dead from Software and UI as it is becoming more childish and dumb OS thanks to Apple fanatics at Google. Scoped Storage nukes filesystem capabilities to a basic level and introduces slower performance. Blacklisting of powerful APIs, Limited set of Background Applications (12L got this but what about old phones ? well they are SOL and ruined), Now forcing notification prompts, making the UI ugliest pile of junk for AOSP. And forcing App bundles to make it hard for Sideload APK distribution and signing permission away from Developers. Then Magisk dropping SUHide, and Safety Net upgrades, soon banking Apps most of them will block unlocked and rooted phones. Due to all this wanted to move to iPhone SE 2022, but I couldn't stand Apple's iTunes BS and lack of expandable storage plus Apple is not-trustable anymore than Google, infact worse. Esp after their Hash check scanning function news and how they were behind the KAT website shutdown and latest FBI snoop on Sci-Hub main person. Still might do it since I cannot stand the stupid Android OS anymore as it doesn't even run properly and pointless in spending $1400 for new Sony Xperia 1 if it's bound to be crippled hard and die in 3 years due to sealed battery while iPhones get easy servicing by the dumb Genius Apple staff at Apple stores because they do not do anything the Apple Robot does the servicing lol and the A15 SoC will run for at-least 6 years from now, they should have made the damn iPhone 8 Plus chassis and stuffed in a bigger battery and bigger display and a secondary Telephoto camera it would have been a solid phone. Now it's a pathetic attempt despite it's faster CPU, look how much Apple is making on that. It's selling for higher cost for such a poor display resolution from 2016 in 2022. Imagine, iPhone SE2022 has lower display resolution and size than the OP3 that I'm running which is already a very old device plus that is LCD while my Samsung Galaxy S from 2010 is OLED. Oh the battery is also disgustingly low capacity on the SE2022 as well. Will see how Sony is going to make their new Xperia 1 Mark IV if they fix the Modem, Battery, Throttling might as well give it a shot before throwing in towel. Forgot... the SD888 is a piece of JUNK. It's hot and pathetic. Since SD875 things are bad. Latest SD 8 Gen 1 based on now X1 ARM cores is also poor due to high heat again. Back to Sony, they make DRM on Bootloader unlock, if we run the BL unlock the Camera, Display Processing technologies get their features axed, that is the only phone worth any money since it has no BS notch. no Hole, has proper Dual Stereo Speakers, SD card slot, Pro features in Camera like LG camera and looks fantastic as well. I cannot imagine what would happen to my data if my V30 did not have SD card slot. All my photos, videos, everything inaccessible. Samsung is not an option anymore as they axed Note with SD card slot and OS looks worse than Samsung Experience (Oreo era pre DJ Koh firing). And American models do not get BL unlock, Exynos won't work in US due to lack of Carrier band Aggregation and Samsung won't even touch the phone for repair. Anyways I digress. That's the whole rant. There are simply no options anymore as a Pocket Computer. But a dumb social media toy there's like gazillion options. -
I wanted to buy Steam Deck, but the internal design of Heatsink is horrible garbage. First they are using a flex cable which runs over the glued in L shape battery (yes you read it right, it's like Apple's BGA DUMPSTER) Then you have this weird metal sheet that sits atop the whole SoC (it has Phases under it too), that sheet is forming a negative pressure it seems (Steve from GN mentioned that negative pressure aspect) and then the memory has no cooling it's just using that negative pressure air flow I guess. Also with that L shape it will be hard to get an aftermarket battery after 3-4 years because of 2 Cell design. Second the SoC is screwed down with guess what ? TRIPOD cancer, and the worst is metal sheet goes along with the Tripod mess to form more pressure at 2 points of the sheet it screws down with the 2 arms of the tripod. So the whole thing feels like garbage to me. To make it worse the M.2 sits near to the power delivery of the SoC and from Steve's GN analysis the IO controller of the M.2 drive becomes very hot. Also the battery backup is horrible, they chose this garbage design of glue on top why ?? Remember old computers, we had even with Alienware all socketed machines except Ranger AW17 and AW18 Viking all were slot in, even Clevo uses it. Old Precision, HP, Compaq damn any machine had those nice packs. These guys could have used it on Deck and sold battery packs like how Xbox Controller has, or the Nintendo's 3DS series which also sported modular batteries (well they went full 180 with Switch which has piss poor QC, joycon drift, insanely anti hack policies (they sued a hacker for millions, 10M USD) and other junk like 3 points of battery failure on Switch - One is Joycon right, Two Left Joycon, Three Console itself). Plus points are - no Drift on Joysticks (there was a firmware issue which they fixed apparently with deadzone), modular design for all the components ( minus battery which ruins it), Good Steam OS Software vision - using Vulktan Proton stack to help with all Windows titles, most titles can be played. Solid Retro console emulator. They could have avoided all that garbage and went with a vapor chamber design and have a fan to the system. So no I skip this product, plus I rarely use my phone everything is PC nowadays. I hate all this portable junk. Steam Deck was in my eyes for a long time but due to the above design decisions I'm skipping it entirely. Shame as I wanted to see LTSC on Deck and as a pocket powerful PC not a dummy Smartphone junk.

Just wanted to share this... Windows Vista and Windows 7 wallpaper pack click the first Drive link, Windows Vista and 7 HD Wallpaper Pack 4.0.7z (195MB). And XP HD wallpaper pack too, Windows XP HD Wallpaper Pack 4.0.7z (242MB), there's a bonus archive org page (here's the link anyways) for higher quality. Beautiful timeless pictures from all old Windows XP, 7, Vista, ME, 2000, 98, enjoy !! I use these only on my machine. I feel like I'm back in old times. I love the old design of Vista and Windows 7 era, everything was beautiful the glossy and nice glows it had for every small thing from highlight, hover to click. It was really a pleasant serene experience. Now all we have is some plain numb flat boring trash for design. Which is why Windows 7 will forever remain the best Windows OS ever made, that era is gone. It won't happen even in the next 10 years. Infact if you see the corporate degenerate art nowadays on Facebook, Google, Microsoft promotions esp in their apps and their home pages or user guides etc you will understand how bad things are.
-
Awful.... I'm done with Microtrash. After Windows 10 LTSC 2019 / 21H2 or next *IF* it comes, that's going to be my last Windows operating system. I decided not to move to Windows 11 not even LTSC. It's not going to happen, with all the crappy CPU related issues, lack of AeroGlass, Utter cognitive dissonance demonstration and pure trash design - Shell32, Win32, Explorer, Taskbar all downgraded these are damn fundamental parts of OS. I cannot simply stand to this junk anymore. The problem is not just usage and personal issues, they are effectively killing out everything good about a PC / Which is our own machine and taking every single knob out and replacing with their corporate ideology which is control every single person as an NPC without brain just consume. So all the new younger generation will be forever kept in dark not knowing the power of an OS (See - Smartphones nowadays, pure social media addiction dopamine products destroying young minds) Gaming is dead to me as well, the new games are having some or other political pandering involved and they do not even put any effort as well in their titles now just like M$ they are targeting the ultra dumb sheep. Pure broken junk selling at $60, they are now getting ready for the inflation tax, $70 for new AAA going forth add the MTX to this No thanks. I won't even pirate the junk forget paying. GaaS is another big problem, Xbox Gamepass is very very popular and new PC Gamepass is coming- More UWP trash, more disowning of games, more customer being shunned off the knowledge (in this case game files, modding and etc) Sony just upped their Playstation subscription models, Rockstar is also dead since a long time, they updated new Subscription services for their new garbage GTA+ this GTA V has been in milking since 2013 to 2022+ on young people. Also Dan Houser who is already *politically more correct* left the company who is also co-founder of this studio Rockstar. GTA VI will sell no matter what but mind you it will be devoid of any passion and soul for sure. Plus their broken trash Trilogy Definitive Edition made them over 300M USD !! So yeah it's pretty much dead, AAA industry. Saw Cyberpunk2077, BF2042 and Halo Infinite disasters already for laughs. M$ has a clear vision - emulate Apple as much as possible from every single standpoint from OS design, Hardware design. Buy everything out (ActivisionBlizzard, Bethesda / Zenimax) and choke out everyone. See that new DX12Ultimate as well, they are singing some BS nonsense of OMG the Decompression of game assets, OMG the Storage I/O increase lol that Forspoken awful game was shown with the latter which didn't tell us how without that works (Read the talk they are hyping it to moon and the game looks worse than Crysis 3 from 2013 what else should I know ?) and only had expected Loading improvements, plus there's not a single resource freeing on CPU or GPU for the Storage I/O because apparently they are just replacing the Win32 API we know to a new DX12. All this is for ruining Vulkan deployments, now they own big corporations which were top Publishers of AAA they own basically top end of the stack in game development. So the future is Linux for everything going forward. And old Windows 7 / LTSC installations for my old games.

AMD drops the ball harder than anything. Pile of trash. It’s official: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D does not support overclocking 100% Junkyard trash no questions asked. This CPU is worse than all of the X series AM4 processors. X3D, the SKU naming has X which stands for Unlocked CPU. Now you pay same price as 5800X but get clock reduction and no OC support on top. Basically a "Gaming" processor wth is this nonsense. An Intel i5 12600K churns through games and OCes like a beast heck a bare bone low grade ADL 4C8T P only processor i3 with BLCK OC rips through, Intel scrambles on that. But this AMD is shameless. What's this new "Gaming" crap fad. Any damn processor since Ryzen 3000 or Intel 8th gen can cut through all games, and people forget how ALL the mainstream reviewers run the CPUs are Stock Powerlimits for both AMD and Intel and run basic DDR4 4DIMM slotted memory. So any tuning is a win win. How the hell are people comparing this pile of junk with 12900K... For that gaming what about other workloads ? damn it desktop is also getting effected by this cancerous trash. This hunk of junk will die on AM4 a miserable death, for one I hate BGA more than anything but damn this type of rip-off is inexcusable in my book. Intel's Broadwell and Crystalwell Processors with L4 cache did well in gaming and OC too (Crystalwell is locked I guess). But this is not. Shame. Ugh now AMD has castrated, chastised, buggy trash as a send off to AM4 socket. If anyone asks me, this is far worse than Rocket Lake LGA1200. -

Papu bro, you know this right, we live in this world of nasty greed for power and corruption. Last week it was some Linux exploit for SU access for all Linux distros. Then before that we had bigger crap than this. To explain - like the CPU CVEs we have most of them require the Physical Access, I think original Spectre from 2018 nuked performance from Haswell and up until Coffee Lake 9th gen and that's where they added new HW revision Stepping which hit ST performance. Then they added HW fixes to Comet Lake 10th gen. And now even 12th gen ADL is effected hard. But the Smartphone exploits are insane...These pathetic corporations always at play, check below content and video (must watch). So yeah the bigger BS was Pegasus Spyware, you should read more about it. It was sponsored by CIA and MOSSAD, look at this Apple report itself it shows how State sponsored corporation allowed that to be born, Pegasus effected all Apple A series processors, they cite how Privacy is built in lmao while Apple is trying to crawl back at the issue, and so many people across the world got monitored and nobody even knows that they got hacked (Android users included). Unfortunate that how US Govt is now completely controlled unlike what Founding Fathers intended this Nation to be. I won't bother with this BS Microcode nerf again, thankfully 10th gen BIOS is all done for, Z590 platform. As for Haswell, it's running great without any nasty performance reduction microcode. It will stay like that since I know how to manage things unlike the sheep normies. But again, awful really. Intel should be ashamed of themselves, like see how every single damn vulnerability effects CPUs since Haswell era and previous Core 2 Quad other Nehalem / Westmere original Core designs do not have all this nonsense despite using literally same RING bus design. As I was saying Core is very old not that old is bad, but they do not care for their own products, else why would they kill LGA1200 in such a miserable state ? or the LGA1700 ILM design flaw ? Intel is really pathetic corporation and now this type of thing forces those people who have that fear complex to rush and buy new CPU, probably anyone reading this would think I'm exaggerating, well let me explain esp look at any damn Android blog, you have these shill journos beating their chest how the old phone doesn't get new OS (they do not even mention 1/2 of the points I outlined here on how Android OS updates are like cancer itself). and how Updates are the most important thing in the world rather than OS poweruser features or having an OS behave like an OS not a damn social media consumption tool and no attention given to 3.5mm jack or the MicroSD slot which is very important to hold personal data and retain it after a disaster... Ultimately Intel has to man up, this kind of nonsense is awful. AMD Ryzen 5000 are not effected by this new BHI CPU exploit (well they have their own BS of Firmware crap and unstable garbage HW). -

Well well, AMD is having lockdown on X3D CPU. Utter shame if this is true. AMD Asks Motherboard Makers to Remove Overclocking Options for Ryzen 7 5800X3D Why is AMD going this route ? Is it that their X3D is not up to the mark standards of having a fully unlocked Silicon or is it that 3DV used for this single awful Gaming targeted CPU is not going to take more tuning as AMD spent very little time on tuning this chip, like not refine the the Microcode or make a new one specifically for this ? Probably both the cases. A real shame to be honest, they castrated 100MHz of clocks on Base and Turbo and now no more Tweaking. What's the point in paying such money for this locked down BGA type or a barebone SI class OEM garbage processor SKU... With this I'm pretty sure the IODie is still a mess probably (WHEA, USB, etc) and retuning the entire CPU along with the added cache stack on top along with more uncore tuning = money, R&D so AMD probably left the plan in the middle somewhere, so no more X3D refresh for whole stack, if they did that it would have fixed all issues of Ryzen 5000 series CPUs and made them completely bulletproof like Intel parts for the foreseeable future. Now have to deal with half-cooked meal. Truly bad move AMD. This is like Apple levels of BS. Here's a thread from 20 days back from an AMD user with his experience of USB nightmare (from r/AMD) Unfortunate for that poor chap. -

Yep Apple went too big unlike pathetic Intel but remember Intel wants BGA JUNK for their thin and light trash, Intel loves BGA more than anything because very high margins and high volume plus pathetic binning, vs LGA high binning standards on top gaming is the most important thing for Intel so 8P. While Apple is making this to simply have the damn PR command like always...😝 But this SOC is a disaster to me esp with my unhinged Apple hate. I will explain quickly and short. First the SOC Is 800mm2, 2x the size of M1 Max, and it packs 2x of the Transistor count which was already massive 50bn+ now it's 114Bn. Which makes it one of the most expensive production Silicon on TSMC probably. Then they added unified memory to it, which we will talk later. Second is the ultimate taboo in my book. It's all BGA TRASH. A Studio chassis first time in decades, Apple could have literally made the chassis years ago and used an LGA Intel processor inside it, ofc that means consumer gets more options instead getting ripped by Apple no that cannot happen as per them, Anyways moving on, they say it's a workstation, without much I/O, you buy more Thunderbolt accessories lol, no NVMe option, no Optane (kinda dumb but P5800X Optane is the world's mort high performing and high endurance drive) well let's forget that since it's too expensive, look at Seagate FireCuda 4TB drive powered by Micron NAND flash, it's the fastest consumer grade PCIe 4.0 SSD with maximum endurance and performance than SN850 Black and 980 Pro, same cost as 8TB Apple upgrade though for 2x 530 4TB FireCuda, you will get a nice socketed 2280 stick vs a BGA dump. No PCIexpress slots for real workstation uses - HBA SAS Expanders for RAIDs and tons of Drives or the Hypervisors like VMWare ESXi, Proxmox etc. Nothing, but a junk Apple OS which is fancy at best. Third is the Price and Performance, this thing costs $1500 for the base version of M1 Max a bit of recap - That CPU was benchmarked by Anandtech with mobile laptop junks, where it was keeping up with the 3080L BGA JUNK Nvidia mobile GPU that was only in Geekbench trash, in real workload an SOTTR doesn't have the ARM native distribution so it uses Rosetta, as in it's impressive BUT loses out badly lol, it performs worse than 3060L 🤮 mobile junk. Yeah it's fast in encoding and other works like Finalcut Pro, Davinci stuff, thanks to Apple first party payment optimization services to vendors like Adobe and Co. on top of the ARM processors having dedicated compute blocks, x86 does everything in brute force so it relies on high ST and SMT / Hyperthreading unlike ARM. Now they say it's faster than a 3090, with what ? 114Bn design of 800mm2 die while 3090 has 28bn count on top of 12900K having just mere 2.xbn transistor count lol. Now the best part, look at the M1 Ultra cost, so to beat a 3090 which Ryan Smith at Anandtech really believes in, you must pay $4000 base for Ultra SOC upgrade AND $2000 USD extra to get more GPU cores, PLUS you get a puny 64GB memory, 1TB SSD. Ofc you can upgrade all of them to a nice $6000-$8000 price tag. And that's what it is in a nutshell. The graphs and claims ofc with footnotes matching the 12900K running DDR5 and 3090 (leaving aside the intricacies of the Dual Rank High speed XMP 3.0 memory, fully unlocked AVX512 speed without E core nonsense, and etc etc) their performance is equivalent to a 12900K + 3090 all for ? $4000-8000 USD with no memory or storage upgrades, no PCIexpress, no NVMe RAID. We get nothing, but a hunk of soldered rubbish bragging piece of scrap recycled metal box to brag about Davinci Resolve and how dumb the sheep are. An old used Enterprise class HPE / Dell PowerEdge Rack servers 1U or 2U chassis with Intel Xeon processors, ECC DRAM can be made for that cash and we can enjoy a real Personal Computer unlike this BGA trashware. Apple beating their chest how great their oversized silicon overloaded with transistors on bleeding edge TSMC node vs the competition like Intel 10nmESF (which is Intel 7, a.k.a TSMC 7N class) and Samsung 8N which is 10nm Samsung for GA102 LOL. I will wait for Genoa Turin processors which will shred every single CPU out there and derivative AM5 processors. Ofc Intel's Sapphire Rapids XEONs as well and Raptor Lake processors, plus new Ada Lovelace and RDNA3 GPUs are incoming on TSMC 5N which will REKT Apple nonsense. -

I remember how he initially said that SP rating is not real lol in the past. IMHO his Caseking was also too much overpriced rip off in Euros as well. Just remembered it seeing him using SP rating officially. I think he never did mention any SP rating quality in his previous videos and I found this video when I was researching on the SP thing as a whole.. 5:42 is the mark where he says it's not true that ASUS found something to find out binning of Intel processors. 😝 I mean he says true that you need to test, but ignores the reality of VID, which the CPU requests the motherboard and it's the element of a parameter that Intel puts in the CPU when testing, which is the only possible measure anyone can have to determine the CPU silicon quality because of the low leakage, voltage and high clocking capability. Also very important thing, he did not mention the SP rating of the new processor PLUS no VID table shown either for either of them, because of lack of an ASUS Board. TBFwWithout seeing that how can we see the other "random CPU" and it's important aspects. Honestly even MSI added the option now fully, I would see SP as a very important factor. Plus remember ASUS and MSI never advertise the SP thing at all only to enthusiasts it matters, also It's not marketed thing like RGB crap. It's a real Intel Factory binning parameter that should not be ignored. In this era of trash products, crappy marketing and RGB nonsense and super focus on gaming, we should be glad to have such metric exposed to consumers who pay good money for their hardware. -

Congrats brother Fox. I hope you can enjoy the benching on this HW. Since most of the folks here are obviously into that. Plus fantastic choice, 2DIMM is and has always been the best way for maximum performance and value and best tech with DDR5 it's even more paramount. Also MSI is a fine choice regarding Win7 since Canonkong got successful with that mobo company, as they natively had the Win7 ACPI. Unlike others who have compromises in either BIOS or OC or Performance or QC etc.. I'm facing some QC things on my side too, mild disappointment. I hope I can finish mine too and enjoy my PC, been a damn long time since I got my components esp GPU lol. A shame that Intel mucked up the whole lineup, Alder - Raptor - Meteor - Nova - Lunar all of them are big little bs, I do not like it at all. That's set for 5-6 years plus. The best thing that Intel has is solid OC, and fixed Clock speed option. No crappy AMD dynamic clock speed drama, no awful issues like I/O die plus ton of official documentations and datasheets.. Intel is fixed at 8P because they know the Console generation is fixed at 8Cores and they can stick to that and add these small cores to get the SMT performance and compete against AMD's superior SMT performance. Sad future, they are making 200 SKUs for latest BGA JUNK YUCK. https://videocardz.com/newz/intel-details-12th-gen-core-alder-lake-p-u-series-more-than-250-thin-and-light-designs-planned-for-2022 So that alone tells us DIY is not their main anymore, BGA thin and light junk... they give the gamers who are most of the DIY market now their 8P fast cores and keep the baby cores for that Multithreaded performance. Intel's Core is very old, it's same ring bus technology since Nehalem. So they are stuck there and their lithography or clock behavior is also like that they add the EMIB to the XEON to add more cores and make a successor for Mesh. Finally AMD's Zen CPU design is brand new, 2016, their new Zen is scaling extremely well due to their MCM design. Milan is 64C, Genoa is 96C with SMT, Intel Sapphire Rapids got delayed to Q3-4, Genoa will sweep the market, And Bergamo is 2023 with cut down Zen4c, Intel Sierra Forrest which is same like Bergamo a cut down x86 CPU is in 2024, so Intel is late by a year. Now to the AM5, to conclude I think AMD will not go same big little because there will be no difference with Core counts vs Intel and what does a company need to stand out, they should do better than competition. My guess is AMD will shove big little junk into BGA hellbooks and other trash but keep a full fat design on DIY and if needed they will add a whole another group of SKUs with cut down Zen 5c. I hope and wish I'm not wrong... -

THIS is why we should avoid those trash RGB junk AIOs and etc peripherals as much as we can. They add pure bloat nonsense. Bro I bought Hyper X Alloy Origins, it has full metal AL chassis with no plastic in sight ultimate build quality with ZERO flex, removable USB C cable, fantastic keys using Cherry MX Red linear, on top a nice RGB light PLUS a software which allows to store the 3 profiles of your choice on the keyboard (this feature is not there on any Corsair, Razer, Steelseries or any company you need their bloat running). Not even those custom KBs have such features. So you do not need any damn junk RGB software running on your machine. Well they had to screw it up. The damn software itself is UWP trash. Yep pure JUNK. And future is grim because garbage HP bought out HyperX brand. RIP. Also I expect all new AIOs and new software will start this UWP soon. ASUS GarbageCrate is UWP, AWCC Is UWP, Nvidia CP is now UWP, AMD drivers will soon be UWP. Everything will become UWP only. Also Intel trash is all UWP and their new GPU will also be on UWP. Good that Arctic LFII 420mm AIO is not having any reliance on software, earlier that EVGA CLC also I skipped because of the stupid software requirement. I do not like that at all being shackled to a damn Windows Software for basic needs. Also I got the Apex Z590 brand new board from Newegg sadly it was having paint job qc issue on the damn LGA1200 backplate on the motherboard, like it has rough surface and a possible rusting (?)...a mess of QC by ASUS plus I also discovered one thing, Apex boards get them when they are released. ASUS makes them in less quantities, I got another one from Microcenter by driving an hour and guess what ? The screws look like they have been removed once I can see the wear marks. That box is brand new and it's even having new manuf date than the first one (you cannot check this on box, need to check S/N for ASUS warranty check to know that). So there's only one possibility it's an RMA Refurbished one that ASUS is selling Brand New. I suspect many brands do this. Also congrats on the fantastic beast build, 1000D + SP92 chip I hope you enjoy benching the hell out of it...sadly the entire DDR5 is like snake oil as said by @Mr. Fox. Anyways I would love to see you do a custom loop down the line, many folks here esp moved away from NBs to Desktops and you were the last one of them who was still on DTR I think that feeling alone of having no BS restrictions itself is a big one, at-least we all can worry less about the Dead rotten market of Notebook junk BGA rubbish tech 🙂 -
Good to have this thread. Thank you to all for your valuable thoughts aftermath. I believe Market dynamics changed the world entirely. Nowadays people do not care much for tuning or even owning their own hardware. They are simply consuming everything. Be it any form of Entertainment (movies, games, music), News, Hardware & even Cars every single Electric Car is a massive pile of Data equivalent to oil and it's going to be doubled down onto us with these so called "Always Connected" Cars etc. And due to huge growth in mobile devices giving rise to popular social media groups making forums oldschool - WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord etc, these were always on the hindsight of the mega corporations. So by the constant changes shifting the userbase also changed, many ventured into desktops esp after the MXM was axed with 980M being the last, 2015/16. I used to see so many posts and threads back then later on it changed a lot. More so Clevo owners lounges were bustling with all these threads on MXM cards even they changed the Form factor it was plenty. But eventually it faded out. Now Clevo doesn't even make an LGA machine anymore, LGA1200 is the last of it's kind. Kinda mirrors how Alienware went BGA and I remember Porras and other reps who used to help a lot before BGA and all was dead later, but the forums still were having traffic thanks to @Papusan and other folks constantly engaging and educating folks, still it was not enough. Even Prema is not that active likes of old times. I also remember Svl7, since a long time back. I hope he is fine. Prema is doing well anyways. So is Johnksss all of them BIOS modders. Also @Dannemandbrings up an excellent point of how Vbulletin change effected. This occurred to XDA and Head-Fi too, XDA changed the forum design 2 times. One was I think long back when the forum look changed a lot in 2012-2014 couldn't remember, but still was super popular even if the Android user base was 1%, slowly the Android modding scene also faltered as many stopped thinking about Pocket Computers but rather some media consumption device it dropped to below 1% who mod Android, esp these FB, IG played a big role in changing the thought processes. Now XDA is a barren disaster land, their portal is a joke. Forums are a mess. Android itself is a big gigantic rotting carcass (Android P, Android Q, Android 11). Head-Fi layout also is a giant mess now, I find it very hard to navigate properly. It's mostly a lot of sponsored content emphasized now. With the axing of 3.5mm jack even worse sadly. Ultimately from what I learnt here, NBR was already on life support. Makes sense since the main sites were dead. Finally they also did some similar analysis, and after the folks at TT who wanted NBR to stay alive also probably left. Saw nothing but a loss of money, thus axed the entire forum along with it's valuable treasure data from the face of internet. A big shame. I myself am done with Notebooks pay more for less and get shafted later on. Fun fact - Look at M18x R2 it's running RTX 3000. It even outlived Area 51M. Also now there's no more Unclewebb here for that massive Throttlestop thread, no more TDP Pascal Unlock thread. And a lot of others..Clevo BIOS mod. I fear this even makes the scope shrink further on top of the big little BS from Intel. I wish all the best to all the folks who are going to build the future of NBR on these alternatives.

To all Alienware 17 R1 Ranger owners this is a re-created archived post of the now retiring NBR forums. Please feel free to post your adventures with it. Thank you Dedicated to NBR users - Striker1234, Papusan, Mr.Fox, MogRules, Reciever, MahmoudDewy, Eeposaurus, loafer987, Javers, Pythonic2016 (who unlocked the BIOS), Remek002, Nomad, IVHOTEP, Mr.MogWai, Maxware79, Clamibot, Raidriar, Baqir, ssj92, J95, Woodzstack ++++ all other NBR refugees and owners & BIOS modders - Prema, Svl7, Johnksss. Unleash your beast with this long awaited Unlocked A14 BIOS !! Use the same Sleep bug and flash & you can always roll back if you need any warranty support. Much thanks to Striker for this, He has been really proactive for pushing the Zotac mod and this, +rep bud for the invaluable contribution. - Remember this BIOS Mod is made for the Striker's 4940MX CPU so when you are flashing this onto your machine make sure you are doing an NVRAM reset first to let the BIOS settle for the default values for your CPU /RAM HW before it bricks itself upon changing the custom values, Make sure you know what you are tinkering with, NVRAM reset on these machines is a PITA. OR Please request the modder/hacker to do the same for you with a little of donation which keeps them pushing for this kind of work. - Also I had requested another hacker to share his work on Techinferno for the support of this machine to host an Unlocked sBIOS, It was a month back. If anything comes up I'll keep it updated. Below are some of the quick links for getting out most of your Alienware 17 R1 Ranger - Cheatsheet for the Alienware 17 regarding Windows 10 / Pascal / Maxwell / Fan mod / EDID etc (The above linked site "TechInferno" has Crypto miner, It might infect your machines with malware, Caution Advised, risk. It has so much info please use AV if you want to use this site, thank you sorry for the trouble I will try to move that info to NBR here, thank you for your understanding) - Booting with Maxwell / Pascal without "FULL UEFI" without Dell's support is very hard unless someone ports the code from the Alienware 18 to the Alienware 17 like Swick did it for the M18x R2's updated Unlocked BIOS mod. - A few more tips for this machine - Dolby driver, OC tips (old thread), Resource Index Mr. Fox, Alienware 17 Teardown pics by Mr. Fox, Battery tip for maxing the life, Looking to mod the battery cells ? (2021 - Alienware 18 Battery Mod info page 1 and page 2 thanks to tomX and Senso) - NVRAM reset Step by step by Mr. Fox - Blackscreens - 980M ? (This thread has more useful info too which can help with other GPU upgrades or issues) - 120Hz upgrade for Alienware 17 by Mogrules - A must if you want to run Pascal I suppose. - Pascal MXM upgrades >> Quadro P5000 M17x R4 Upgrade (Should work with AW17 too but need 120Hz) / Zotac 1070 Upgrade / MSI 1070N upgrade - (2020 update) NBR Cooler Mods on Notepal U3 - thread 1, thread 2, post 1, post 2 Svl7, Mr. Fox, Woodzstack Finally the Alienware 17/18 got the unlocked BIOS thanks to the exploit in the secure flash lol. Update #1 Intel DPTF & the Custom Fan tuning via BIOS (Only for MX/ Extreme Unlocked CPUs) Update #2 Service Tag fix in case you already flashed the provided update by Striker instead of a personal BIOS mod BEWARE Info below should be pinned to the first post: Flashing modded BIOS from here will "inject" OPs service tag into Your machine. If You want to keep Your tag You MUST ask pythonic for personal mod Update #3 Updated Intel Microcode (v22) BIOS, the effect on OC/UV isn't tested on this machine at the time of updating this. PLUS also how it fares vs the Microcode bug hack on Haswell is yet to be determined. Update #4 How to Recover from a "Corrupted BIOS" + Knowledge on Recovery BIOS defaults <- Very very Important. Please read you'll know what to do after performing this Recovery task without ending up with a GPU related Beep code, especially on a dGPU only machine. note: this is different from the traditional NVRAM reset on Haswell Alienwares. Update #5 Updated Unlocked BIOS (A14+), New Year gift from javers, Has nice updates for the 'BIOS Recovery' + a lot of stuff baked in. Check post for more juicy details. Update #5.1 As since the original zip isn't there with all files, Please use this zip (SHA -1 b08b095640236b52636078903f2034fc78e20d30) which has all the files required for the "bios.bin" unlocked BIOS flashing, make sure you extract the A14+ bios.bin to this zip contents and then copy all files to C:\ then proceed with the instructions below (posted from the original readme.txt file you can find in the zip) flashing: use the Sleep Bug ! Unpack the archive and copy the into 😄 HD root place ! Then open Comand Promt with Admin Rights (CLI window C:\), put your laptop into Sleep Mode and then Wake-Up It, atger this execute these comands from CLI window : fptw64 -f bios.bin -bios Note - this zip doesn't have bios.bin, please use the above (update5) / below (update6) for the bios file. Update #6 Happy New Year 2019 fellow Rangers, a revision A16 for the lovely lady 17 is here from remek002 with v22 microcode only and driver module upgrades. So no Spectre performance downgrade. Also mind you there seems to be a few BIOS defaults that might differ to the A14+ and remember to change the service tag. Update #6.1 *Only for Windows 10 users* If you are running an sBIOS even with a lower microcode = v22, there is a high possibility that your Win10 installation automatically updated your microcode to the latest, meaning your CPU will have all mitigations for the Spectre and Meltdown, which will cause significant ST (Single Thread) performance loss, so to avoid that, before doing anything on the Windows10 installation, just disconnect the Internet and please follow below, clicking both the links below. - Controlling the Microcode update file in System32 folder, thanks to Unclewebb - More information on the same, thanks to Papusan. They will allow you to control the Win10 OS level BIOS Microcode patches instead of MS. Archived Links for future reference (one, two, three), also just an FYI, Haswell 4th gen Core processors are not effected by Plundervolt (SGX issue) which causes to lose the ability of Undervolting. Update #6.2.1 (2022) The BIOS links are out of date. I will update with the A14+ BIOS with a mirror. Updated the links 6/5/2022 with Unlocked BIOSes to choose from. Javers version of A14+ - LINK Remek002 version of A16 with Microcode downgraded to v22 a.k.a no Spectre and Meltdown - LINK BIOS Files needed for Flashing, simply copy the bios.bin and follow instructions in the zip (Readme.txt) - LINK Service Tag changes that you need to do (need HxD tool to hexedit) Javers - CHANGE1 is what you should look for in HxD and replace with your Service Tag. Remek002 - YOUR_ST, follow readme.txt.
