Clevo X580 TBA at CES 2025 - 18", 4+4 drives and memory, 2xTB5

Ah that makes sense. I did not expect it to be wired significantly different from the other models to be honest. At least this year it seems that due to the Arrow Lake TB4 having iGPU video output by default, many new options will have this "feature" if they include that port. -

Ah, my question was if the HDMI is MUXed to the iGPU in hybrid mode along with the laptop panel. -

Yeah that annoying fan oscillation was present on the Fury 16 G10. I suppose that we can adjust power limits but I do not think there is a way to adjust turbo ratios down other than dropping all the way to base clocks. The CreatorPro X18 sounds really nice. It just needs more display options. If the HDMI port really can be driven by the iGPU that is a great feature and unique to its model. There is an open box model available here at a good reseller and its tempting to try testing it out. -

I agree about the fan curve issues. While the Zbook 15 G4 did not have this problem the Zbook Studio G3 definitely did and probably every generation going forward. Fan oscillation at idle speeds and in generally just annoying bursts of noise from day to day use. Of course tuning is also locked down so helping the situation by taming the CPU was not possible. I would even say the Precision models just have annoying fans, the only workstation that is a pleasure to use noise wise has been the Thinkpad P16 G2. We dont really know how Arrow Lake HX will feel or work yet. It could be the case that the previous gen 14900HX / 13950HX may have a better experience for quite some time. -

My thought this time around is the uniwill id-y model will do the best as it will have a well tunable CPU and memory. A 285hx may have higher clocks but the design must allow those to be sustainable. The 18 inch zbook is also quite interesting. If anything because I really like physical touchpad buttons over clickpads. -

There has been a rumor floating around that 5090m will be back to 200W power limit. Something about it being said on a Lenovo livestream. It may make sense if 24GB GDDR7 draws more power than 16GB and eats into that 175W budget. This also corresponds with other things I have observed like the 5090m having more power phases compared to 4090m. -

Gaming is one of the reasons. I think the 9950X3D has the non X3D cores so they can hit higher frequencies. I am not sure how high the 9800X3D clocks on air or water but it seemed like it was still less than a 9950X. Even the Xeon needs process lasso to work correctly. If I launch any single core benchmark it runs on any core and not the one clocked the highest or starred in XTU. It would be nice if they released a 9950X special edition with both CCDs a very high bin. -

I thought about trying a 9950X3D. Between the increased latency of the registered memory, limit of around 5.2ghz on air for the 2495x, and the fact that some of my encoding jobs do not scale above 8 cores I was thinking about trying a 9950X3D instead. It would probably be a better chip for WoW given what @electrosoft mentioned with his 9800X3D the other day. Honestly even the tuned Raider 18 felt smoother in WoW with the 7945HX3D paired with the 4090m. Right now is not a great time to build anything though as I am traveling for the next couple of weeks.. -

Nice! I like to run Unigine Heaven along with CBR23 as it generally gives me a good idea of crossload performance in games. It looks like it has a 95W PL1 according to the notebookcheck but its great that you can get that at such a good temp with the tweaks you did. Did you get a chance to run Aida64 Cache and Memory on it yet? -
The only current 17 inch workstation is the Dell Precision 7780. It uses a 16:9 display and is available with a FHD 60hz display option. The obvious advantage with it is using the SODIMM interposer you can utilize XMP memory which puts it at a higher performance tier than the Thinkpad P16 G2 which is limited to 4000 MT/s. It also supports four M.2 SSD drives so plenty of upgradability. I do not like its cooling solution as I feel like it does not have enough headroom for sustained high end combined loads. For a CPU only load it should sustain around the same as the P16 G2 so long as there are not any cooling system issues. It may have finnicky microphone audio support as I had trouble with it consistently pickup my voice on audio calls in the past.

Honestly that is a great score for stock with TIM reapplication. The warranty is definitely a must. I believe with Acer they are serviced in TX so at least its a geographically central location for ground shipping. It can take three weeks for a repair if it needs a new motherboard as those are usually ordered from Taiwan as needed. For tuning on laptops Prema or MSI are the only game in town. For MSI Intel models generally gets the best treatment. They have EC mods that allow running higher TDPs and not needing DTT installed. They also have a simplified control center called Feature Manager too which is much less bloated than MSI Center. For Prema that means the Hydroc Tongfang model sold by Eluktronics. Every year they make meaningful improvements to their systems. This year its a modular GPU board; inclusion of iGPU video outputs; better hinges; miniLED display option with control center option to disable FALD. As usual you can control ALL of the usually hidden config options that Nvidia would rather keep in a canned OEM tuned power profile. I guess the liquid cooling addon is a nice way to get additional power in a stationary setting. They have also changed the memory to no longer be stacked and also have active cooling so overclocking should be more capable in that regard. It also ships with a 420W charger which is a welcome change. TDP is slowly creeping back up to what we used to see with 10th Gen DTR's. -

Try using Smokeless UMAF to see if it helps. You would probably need to set a bios admin password and then disable secure boot for it to work. UV Protection needs both OC support and SA OC support (ram overclocking) enabled for it to deactivate. -
Its a nice machine. I just buy and sell a lot of tech. This particular model was interesting to me as it is a rare config that has a 130W 4090M. Out of Dell / HP / Lenovo this one has the best thermal performance due to the dual vapor chamber design.

I currently have a P16 G2 for sale too. Its a decent laptop - the keyboard is indeed very good, probably the best in the industry. Regarding storage it can take an 8TB WD SN850X SSD in at least one of the slots. The other slot may only take single sided SSD's so its limited to 4TB. Memory speeds with 2x32GB are limited to 4000MT/s per Intel specs. Sustained TDP is around 100W on the CPU, or 180W combined CPU+GPU. There is a MUX switch for the laptop display available in the bios, all out video outputs are wired to the dGPU. The wifi is soldered AX211 and as you might have noticed there is no built in ethernet. The system can support 170W, 230W and 300W Lenovo adapters - but NOT the 330W Lenovo adapter.

I would not be surprise if the LM application had issues. High end machines are not treated better when it comes to assembly at a factory. No vendor should be using LM from the factory anyways as it requires far more care than a mass produced process can account for. Instead they should just use ptm7958sp which while being less performant will always be consistent unless you get a defective heatsink. I am glad it has been working very well for you! I always buy and sell laptops so it just happened to be its time. I think most of the issues I had with it is due to trying to use W10 instead of W11. Maybe the new bios update finally bumped the AgesaPI version from 1.0.0.3. I also kind of felt like a 100W PPT limit on the 7945HX3D was unfair while there are 16 inch Lenovo, Asus and Dell laptops with 7945HX at 140W. The RGB effects topped it off as I cannot stand a "boot default" of anything other than a static color. In past MSI Steelseries RGB controllers they had onboard memory but that no longer seems the case. Oh, and it looks like MSI bumped the Raider 18 with 9955HX3D and 5090m up to $5099 so it further makes last years model a better value! -

Hmm I do not see artifacting on the MSI 5090 Gaming Trio in WoW with afterburner running, but maybe I am missing something. Granite Rapids has a new 16 P-core LCC variant which is Redwood Cove cores complete with hyperthreading on a monolithic die. I guess it still uses a tiled die for I/O stuff but the MCH and hopefully PCIe should be on the CPU tile from what I understand. If only Intel management would get their head out of the groud and port this chip in some form to client lineup. Its also Intel 3, produced domestically in Intels own fab, just like the Sapphire Rapids chips. -

One thing I need to try and do is see if I can push clocks a bit further. Supposedly testing individual cores for overclocking stability is a way to achieve this. Is there a good guide out there for this process? Ideally if I could even get 8 out of 24 cores up to 5.2ghz then I could also generate a Process Lasso affinity preset to apply to games. Sadly they seem to mostly be dumb and do not ever select a higher clocked core, or potentially there are bugs with CPPC in pair with the Xeon so it may just not work well in an automated fashion. I am looking at a few higher resolution options out there potentially. I do not want OLED or really miniLED. There is a 38 inch ultrawide LG at 3840x1600 that looks interesting and should be a better fit for a 5090. -

I can live without 18 inch, but that being said I can carry a portable 16 inch monitor to use as a second display, and would also rip out the force fed high DPI garbage QHD+ display and replace it with a more sane FHD+ 165hz panel that is more power efficient and far easier to pair with external displays at a similar ~100DPI. I think for me QHD+ at a minimum needs to be in a 21 inch laptop panel - otherwise its just too much of a jump unless someone has 20/20 vision and does not get migraines looking at a display for extended amounts of time. This 16 inch is testing stable at 8000MT C38 according to Prema. They do not have CSODIMM modules yet. -

It's a good keyboard. Indeed very heavy. I ordered it with pink switches but think I actually wanted browns so I have been waiting for that set to arrive. I believe cherry switches can be ordered from digikey to be used in place of the kalh ones they offer. Everything is pretty modular so replacement of worn out parts should be easy to do if needed. They also make ATX cases as well, but unfortunately I needed SSI-EEB so I had to go with the fractal option instead. -

Yes on their site. It is called launch (or launch heavy which is the one I have with a 10 key). They have a custom designed firmware for the keyboard with very lightweight config software that works on windows and Linux. It also remembers the configuration so no need to even keep the software loaded unless it needs a firmware update. -

I wish someone with deep pockets could help get the System76 Virgo Laptop project going again. Its a design that would be fully open source and produced domestically, along with using open source firmware. It would likely only ever be an Intel platform as AMD and Nvidia do not really collaborate on these types of projects that threaten their established OEM ecosystem. Its not much but if you are ever looking for a mechanical keyboard they make a fully domestically manufactured one. I was even able to take a quick tour of their factory in Denver where they have their fabrication machines back when I bricked one of their laptops and needed it to be recovery flashed. -

The price on the Eluktronics Hydroc G2 is better. Its $3300 for a config without SSD, RAM and OS but including 275HX, 5090m and miniLED display. The memory is no longer stacked and has some active cooling so its better built for overclocking this generation. The GPU is a proprietary modular board. No gaurantee of upgrades but it should be less expensive as a spare part than a BGA CPU+GPU board. I guess if you compare it to a desktop 285K and 5080 its only about a 100% surcharge for being mobile. -

The advantage of the Raider 18 is the advanced bios and that you can get a less limited EC through certain channels. It will still not clock memory as high as the GE78 however as it has four SODIMM slots which really hurts memory signal integrity in DDR5 laptops. Even the Titan 18 is not stable above 6000MT with two SK Hynix SODIMMs. I feel like 18 inch models from last year did not get a fair display of potential as many OEMs kept the better technology and configurations in their 16 inch models. Probably the same thing will happen this year because OEMs do not really want to produce 18 inch laptops.
