  1. WTB Dell Precision M6700 lid / top cover. Just the lid without hinges or screen etc is fine. Must be without scratches or dents (!). EU only.
  2. SATA caddy installed, works like a charm. Also replaced the CPU with 4940XM for the sake of 'maxing it out'. I've been reading it's possible to mod the UEFI to OC the CPU? With PTM7950 there is a bit of OC headroom. Need to think about the GPU as the K4100M is a rather poor performer despite it's 4GB VRAM and running a +135 / +200 OC in Afterburner. Thankfully it's not destructive ed. it will still work for Keplers. The middle part at the bottom where it touches the row of black capacitors needs to be sanded down from the right as on Maxwell the coil has a different placement. This part needs to be removed: It's all soft aluminum and copper and done if a few minutes though. By the way, does anyone still have modded BIOSes for the M6800? 3. Well, the card is confirmed defective. Tested in a Dell Precision to identical result - hard shutdown under load, triggering the OCP and shutting down the power adapter too. Will post a few pics in a while. There aren't any discolorations on the PCB by the way.
  4. I also had the luck to buy an orange M6500 Covet with 920XM (have a 940 on the way), 16 gigs of RAM and an FX3800M. Does anyone know which driver for the 3800M works in Windows 11? I get a black screen after reboot after I let it install the Nv driver through Windows update. Works fine in XP though.
  5. Thanks, I bought a SATA caddy. Removing the front trim/bezel of the old DVD drive looks like a challenge, the 12.5mm ones on my HP's were much easier to remove. For CD/DVD drive I have an iODD ST400 emulator.
  6. Sadly the DVD drive is shot on my 6800. Is it just a standard 9.5mm drive or do they have a vendor lock?
  7. I also noticed the 6800 has the same problem as the 6700 with the retention clip of the keyboard connector breaking, probably because of the heat from the GPU.
  8. Hehe, my Covet M6800 doesn't even have an eDP connector, only LVDS. Internal layout is completely different from M6700.
  9. What about the touchscreen model, same? I assumed it was the RGB LED IPS.
  10. Does the M6800 Covet come with the best screen available for these? Is it the 3D screen?
  11. Could it be Windows is the problem? I have an AMD firepro model of the 6700 as well but that one doesn't show the Intel iGPU either in W11. + Ok, got Optimus working. It must've disabled itself in the BIOS after swapping the cards. Now I just need a WinXP driver for that M5000M and everything is golden... Done so far: - Replace CPU with 3940XM - Upgrade RAM to 1866MHz 32GB - Upgrade GPU from K4000M 4GB to M5000M 8GB - Replaced all thermal pads with Arctic TP, TIM with PTM7950 - Upgraded storage to 860PRO 2TB for all OS'es, 870EVO 1TB for general data, ISO's etc - Added Intel AX210 WiFi 6 card from Aliexpress, moves the N6235 to other slot, that way I can have normal WiFi in XP and WiFi6 in W10/11 (AX have no XP/7 driver). Things left to do for my M6700: - Find the upgraded palmrest with fingerprint and NFC reader - Find an undamaged screen bezel w. webcam - Upgrade screen to eDP IPS, keep 1080p but with higher Hz to match or exceed the Covet panel. Or maybe there are better panels that are a drop-in replacement on LVDS? Option: - Find 4x8GB 2133MHz RAM ++++ Ok, I got the M5000M working in Windows XP! I downloaded this driver: https://www.philscomputerlab.com/modified-nvidia-drivers.html Added ID 13F8 and it installed perfectly. Under XP the card is being seen as having 4GB VRAM but that's probably an XP limitation. Optimus remains a mystery, after using XP and rebooting to W11 the Optimus was disabled again and Intel HD graphics not visible in device manager. The GPU performance in XP is a bit worse than in later OS'es, tested in 3DM06.
  12. I used NVcleaninstall, picked the first M5000M template from the list, added 13F8 HW ID but no cigar, I don't even see the Intel GPU in device manager.
  13. Okay, I reinstalled the OS and now for the love of all that's holy I can't reinstall the driver. Getting a black screen + reboot during install of the modded driver, weird. + Ok, so its quite specific to drivers. I found out that 55x release still works, 57x causes a crash and reboot.
  14. Weird, after installing the M5000M and 3940XM, my machine refuses to even POST if I connect the ribbon left on the palmrest labelled "media". It goes into some kind of failstate with the CPU fan going to 100% and then the machine reboots. + OK, found out the problem, one of the contact pads in the ribbon was bent backwards, fixed. Runs like a champ now with the 3940XM / M5000M combo. Installed the latest driver using NVcleaninstall and adding the device ID: https://www.3dmark.com/3dm/126318780 This is with +135MHz on the core clock, can't go any higher in Afterburner. The temps are amazing too, card is running inthe 60*C range under full load. I repadded it using 1.5mm Arctic thermal pads and also repadded the CPU VRM part and added some thermal putty between the PCH and the heatsink. No idea what they were trying to achieve by having a bare bit of aluminum hanging above the PCH without a thermal pad inbetween. I've seen it on both of my 6700's already. I was also looking at swapping the screen bezel for a one with the webcam and it looks like there must be some interconnect board in the lid itself as the webcam model doesn't have any extra cables going to the mainboard.
  15. So the M5000M just came in, they also included the X bracket. Do I have to use that one or salvage one from my k4000m? I know some folks mentioned reusing the old one
  16. Could also be a 210W one, I have one here like this and a smaller one that's 240W. There is also a newer 240W with rounded edges. By the way, are the lid and palmrest interchangeable between the M6700 and M6800? I'm going crazy trying to find a mint lid w. webcam. I'm also looking for a palmrest with fingerprint and NFC, the full spec one.
  17. Not a fan of such solution (pun intended) - gaming laptops in general have a short lifecycle and finding a proprietary replacement fan will be a major PITA. At least ASUS used to apply LM from factory so you'd never have to pull the heatsink assembly apart.
  18. Do these work 1:1 in an M6700?
  19. To be fair in the past we had CPU's running with more damage than that. If the silicon is damaged, the CPU should be either working or dead, not degrading over time.
  20. Sounds rather impossible these days with almost no parts for these machines. Might as well try to find one that already has the IPS panel 😞 So it's the same as with the DreamColor HP's - they also have a separate interposer board screwed down to the inside of the lid.
  21. Perfect. By the way I think I will be dropping the HP machines in favor of M6700's. Already set my first M6700 to multiboot on 2x 1TB SSD's, booting everything from XP, through Vista x64 to Win 11. The 8770W has a nicer touchpad, better CPU temps and is way easier to work on but the M6700 has 2 advantages - both HDMI and DP outputs as well as Optimus. Dell also doesn't need dismantling for cleaning the fans and heatsinks. I howerver despise that plastic frame around the keyboard on the M6700, very prone to breaking. Is this the "RGBLED" screen upgrade for the M6700 some folks are talking about? https://nl.aliexpress.com/item/1005001717835178.html What would I need to do to install it, buy a different screen cable only, or is it the same LVDS cable? I plan to keep only one HP, my 8760W that I built from 3 different ones and only just lately managed to score the Dreamcolor panel, which is indeed quite gorgeous.
  22. What is the thermal pad thickness on the M5000M vs K4000M, everything the same? Or should I just leave the old pads where they are and repaste the core only?
  23. That 970M is going to make a nice coaster, no idea what is wrong with it. Currently gone back to the K3000M and everything is fine. Also finally managed to score a Dreamcolor HP, but it's a 8760W, not 70. Upgraded the old 4000M Fermi to K3000M Kepler and it's dandy without modding drivers. Wanted to replace the lid and the screen separately but gave up when I saw that DC has another control board screwed into the lid around the illuminated HP logo... It also doesn't overclock even 1Hz. I bet that control board has something to do with it. Even 61Hz already causes gibberish on screen. By the way, I have a trashed Zbook 17G5 I'm parting out and it has a P2000 in it. Do these also need a heatsink mod?
