Going on @Vladka76 view of using the Clevo Cable +HP DC + etc etc. And please correct me if im wrong, I assume standard 30pin layout, data pins etc. So no "magic" happens at the display panel as e.g LG panel exists in Dell, Clevo, etc there should be standardised (except for mounting points) the only change would be the DC board doing the converting. could we not use a "other" brand solution? one thats more available than the "unobtainium" DC board? probably overthinking it here.
I agree with the view of no need for 4K screen etc, but does that simplify it?
-
I tried navigating taobao for that cable too, it was a challenge.
Interesting details @Vladka76 shows the laptop manufacturers lean to use universal display components (which is to our benefit) as @GuitarG says it’s just the HP end of the cable that’s the challenge.
if I read that right we could possibly put a G6 screen into the 8570? -
That’s a valid question, not sure without researching pinout. Maybe something guitarg could confirm.
its worth a try though as it might open options. However a dell screen might be a pain to fit to Hp hardware -
Yeah I saw that reading thru the other post, it makes sense now.
would that negate the need for the dream colour board? Therefore a normal IPS screen maybe possible?I can find these cables but the board is unobtainable

Yes, all DELL's similar workstations have iGPU enabled and working - so they can work with newer cards even via LVDS interface (I've read about it, this was not my own experience; I've even heard that MXM 3060 (Ampere!) worked well with LVDS display). But our beloved HP EliteBook's don't have iGPU at all (newer ZBook's already have it)...
Yes, I've heard that in DELL's Pascal cards works only with Engineering (early) vBIOS, but Turing cards all works well.
Now I can only dream about RTX 3000 (standard MXM 3.0b) working in my 8770w... 😕If i recall correctly, HP elitebooks dont have the traces in CPU socket to run iGPU (intelHD) so its MXM or Bust....... which does suck. i think the newer 840's have it, but the 8570W doesnt.

Nice find. Most of this forum will have a bidding war lol. Good to see they exist, I was trying to find one for my upgrade. I’d seen an IPS screen too but wasn’t sure if even this cable would work with it. Doesn’t this need an additional DC inverter board too?
However as you say @Vladka76 it won’t help us run the newest cards. I think RTX 5000 is the super best we can try with Dc.

Cool will reach out to you via PM.
has anyone found any links/suppliers for the cable to allow the Dreamcolour IPS screens to work with the mobo? I know guitarg was working on one. -
Nice work. Doing similar fan work on my 8570w. How does the mod see both fans? I see some (pavilion units) just split the fan feed on all wires and it seems fine.
-
cool, was considering M5000M vs 980M upgrade for my machine hence the ask as i have LVDS. i mean id love a 10 series, but without DC (or equivalent) i'm stuck.

I found that versions somewhere later than Dec. 2020 seem to break brightness control on my 8570w with M1000M and 8760w with M4000M. In each case I simply took the latest version from https://www.nv-drivers.eu/ for the respective cards listed and brightness control works flawlessly with those versions. I believe they are both on 460.89 (can't check right now to be sure). Never bothered to check what the latest functional one actually is.
For the M2200 it would be the same version.
were both yours in LVDS screens? not that DC screens should behave any different.

I really would love some better LCD in laptop. My dreamcolor screen at lowest brightness lights up whole room at night 😅
Anybody with DC can confirm same "problem" with minimal brightness ?Isnt the screen brightness adjustment (or lack thereof) a downside of the more powerful cards? Just LVDS screen on mine, although still hunting for a DC (or equivalent) screen. There was a chap on here (built ultimate 8770w thread) where he got a equivalent screen and the mythical 40/50pin cable too.

Nice work. Did you manage to upgrade the GPU any further in your 8770w? I know @GuitarG in this forum has been trying many gtx and etc cards in his 8570w. I’m curious if there needs to be any custom vbios to make them work in the elitebooks? My 965m install failed at post, so now looking at 980m, I noticed you tried the m3000 with options for the m5000.
in your screen upgrade is that connected behind the Dreamcolour board or is the cable a custom one which negates the need for DC middle bit. I think the 8570 & 8770 DC options are same parts (with exception of screen size)
Unfortunately i didnt manage to get on well with TaoBao and not sure if they would ship to my location.

If we are talking about the 965m mxm-a format, then no, it does not have GM204.
https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/geforce-gtx-965m.c2796
The differences from m2200 are basically in the frequencies.Yep, I’d previously tried the 965m "A" in my 8570w (i7-3940xm bios.71), but it never passed POST, however someone has managed to get a 965m working.
I notice there are only two vbios for it on techpowerup. Wonder if it was due to GM204 in the vs GM206 in the 965m that I had the issue? -
Thanks @panda_zzz for the correction. Interesting @erikmiskolin that you have a HP GPU board but dell vbios and it worked (until recently)
are the dell vbios .rom more compatible than HP for our needs?
maybe worth adding a sticky post somewhere on this forum for known working rom versions and card combo’s -
Is the m2000m/m2200m which I think is the quadro equivalent of gtx 965m (correct me if I’m wrong)
I had the no-post with my 965m card, suspected wrong vbios so no boot, didn’t even get the “enter bios” or hp logo displayed.
so your not alone with the issues with the 8570w playing nice with cards.
that said, guys on here have put 980m amongst other cards with a truckload of fettling and an 8770w heatsink. As I plan to run a 980m KBX very kindly did an image of his vbios, so we have a proven working 980m/8570wi think the best card we can throw in on a “normal screen” 8570w is a 1060m/980m (requires heatsink mod) if we exclude guitarg’s awesome work. That is in a different league
-
Just to add, on the heatsink adventure. Stumbled across this gem for the “A” heatsink but could be utilised on our hybrid solutions
in short it’s bonding the cpu and GPU pipes together. Appears to gain a 5 degree drop

have similar with my 1866 sticks(2x8GB, 2x4GB) in my M6800, 2x8GB runs at 1866 C10, 2x4GB even at 1866 C10, but put i all 4 in, has fall back to 1600 C11 😒 maybe different ICs, not checked yet but i dont care anyway, got 16GB of 2133 for "cheap"(120 bucks). 😄
I’ll have to try that and see if less sticks pushes the C value up. Using memtest and other programs reports 1600 when they are “meant” to be 1866, but as called out earlier in chat the “fakey” hyperx underperform.
well done if you got the genuine 2133 stuff I’ve been hunting for a while, only seen the odd stick of 1866 -

Hi there, sorry for such long time to notice, hand is still recovering and in few days I will have other hand "not usable" for some time 😞 So let me help as much I can now,
About looking for 5V points, use pins from under DVD slot. To find which one, type "8560w boardview" in search engine, use OpenBoardviewer from github. With such tool you can also understand fan connector pins role. You need only one wire across board, if I remember, connect PWM pin from "slave fan" to PWM pin from "main fan". REMEMBER to solder it BEFORE that little coil. If you solder it AFTER coil (directly to 5 legged IC) you will damage it!

1- 5V2- PWM
3- GND
4- Tacho
5- Coild for PWM signal
Like I wrote, remember to solder in between that coil (5) and pin (2).
For DVD port you can even use electronic side cutter. I did so, of course being careful and gently. After plastic "deletion" metal wires left I just desoldered with soldering iron and pinched them with pliers. Good luck
Nice one !
Sure! No problem, I even found another DC board, so I have 3 in total - one from Zbook (using it in my laptop) and two from 8560W (one is green, other blue). I will upload them all after I will be able to work!
BTW, PC industry situation nowadays makes my inside very sad, I think we will have to get through that Shawkshank Redemption pipe of (...) with what we have..
I had plans to build myself a nice PC, but after PC parts price rising I decided to stay with my trusty old notebook even longer. Until he will come of age to drink beer with me ^_^
See you all later !
Thanks for the response, Hoping for a speedy recovery for you.
Think i found Boardview you describe.
HP EliteBook 8560W VANHALEN HR HPB MV MB1 V2 Boardview File - Lab-One Forum i'll take a look.ive got a JST 4 pin splitter set to get wires across the Mobo from JST CPU source. One question i do have is, as you describe wiring the "before coil" doesnt that just equate to post the JST plug / wire as it hits the fan circuit board (not challenging the process, just trying to look at it modularly.
I ask as i can pop the little JST wires out to "remove" +5v etc wires from the circuit to add them from DVD edge. so its just the PWM sense that comes across via JST cable solution. also the JST is 4 wire from CPU fan, am i missing something? On the fan PCB its 1,2,3,5 with pad 4 vacant on sunon PCB (hence my confusion)
With only the "one wire" PWM source (PIN2) coming to secondary fan, there wont be any tacho feed back to JST header either so in essence no feedback to mobo #FAN2 is xRPM (TBH i dont recall if HWmonitor even shows CPU RPM) So just +5V and GND to find sources (my jerry-rig USB feed would work to test as fan wont pull in excess of 500Ma whilst i give the DVD port a manicure 😄
EDIT: also not sure why but im getting some of the pictures not viewable in you region (which is a PITA)
-
thanks for the response.
yeah i know there are similar cards. i think another user put a p5200 in his machine, which would be 16GB card, but he had alot of issues getting there. i dont mind the cost aspect, its more what the card could be capable of. Heck the old clunky its in HP8570W is oooold. but fun to tinker with. 980m seem fairly plentiful at present.with the LVDS screen in my machine im limited on what cards i can put in without going to dreamcolour screen and extras. so 980M is final maxwell card, i think final pascal card i can run is 1060m but thats 6gb max, its more what works with machine than whats out there with an MXM edge connector.

When I used GTX980 I had same problem, try to disable group policy for automatic update of drivers. Also you can try to use NVflash (I used "override certifications" version) and try other vbios. Mine card was G-Sync one, I used non-gsync bios from clevo or msi and it worked flawlessly. If you're not modding heatsink, try setting low power mode in drivers to not damage card.
Thanks ! 🙂 Power supply was rated for 230W, it was enough for 120W of power used by card + 45W CPU and other components. I used it for a while with stock cooling and tried not to stress it too much. And when I used benchmarks, CPU temp was way worse - about 100 degrees. GPU was about 85-88. Safe temperature for GPU is about 85 degrees when using it for long time.
For second fan I just used dremel tool to take out fan from HP 8770w and connected 5V and GND to nearby trace and PWM to Tacho on my main fan. Will show pictures later.
For now...
I couldn't stand damaged heatpipe from job before and had to make it all better =] Will explain later, for now... pictures!Hey @GuitarG can you share the pinout for the JST lead? or which pins you picked up +5v & gnd in the machine? I was thinking using USB port to feed (probably a bad idea)
I now have a JST GH Extender and another JST GH splitter and a "spare" 8570W heatsink to graft onto my 8770 "MXM-B" plate and sit secondary fan in DVD bay.
One thing ive been looking for is the Tach and speed pinout for the Sunon fans we have in HP kit, Datasheets seem to be difficult to find even when i have the part number.
Finally got a response back from HP re: CPU fan header, they confirmed my theory and advise not running dual fans of that jst cpu socket, only fan control and tach, but run the 5v feed elsewhere (assume USB +ve rail or DVD pin) so only two pins go to header. Can anyone share what DVD pin I pickup from or where it should be soldered to?
That said i found a guy on reddit had an HP pavillion, just soldered one fan onto the primary so "piggyback" on all four pins and it worked, wasnt sure how much of a limit we have on the 8570W to allow thisUpdate: Taking Google AI with a pinch of salt, gives the detail below fan models MF60150V1-C001-S9A and MF60150V1-C000-S9A Based on standard 4-pin PWM laptop fan configurations, the pinout for these models is:
- Black: Ground (GND)
- Red: +5V DC Power
- Yellow/Green: Tachometer (Sensor/Signal)
- Blue: PWM Control (Speed Control)
Sunon have the horrid other colours, but really just looking for verification the detail is correct from you guys, Thanks in advance.

Actually you can carefully *delete* that connector with pliers, no need to dissasembly whole laptop.
If you would like to use that SATA port then it would be possible to route cables elsewhereDo you have any pictures of the deletion? Just how much “artistic flare” is needed on the DVD port? I’ve now got an HP vbios 980M enroute (965M was a bust) so a few steps behind you. Got my 8770w H/sink chopped just off the branch ready to fit, so at least at first install I can sink and see if I get video output.
was your 980m a custom vbios? I know speaking to KBX he had an 980M HP card with a Msi vbios he’d got installed from china hence the ask. -
Hi All, Did anyone manage the 980M VRAM mod? i've got a 980M in my machine and im curious if its possible to be done or if there are any restrictions, sounds like its a simple reflow? (not that its simple) but if Vbios isnt a blocker surely we could go for a 12gb or 16gb unit? I know there is a market for the desktop cards being upgraded. but not seen much noise on the MXM units.
-
Afternoon all.
On the search for 980M i found this piece of work
Looks like someone was mad enough to swap Samsung and Hynix chips. which intruiges me if 970 or 980 could address higher VRAM capacity. i know the newer boards they seem to be having RAM upgrades on them so curious if its viable.
does anyone know if the 1060 would work out the box in the 8570w? I know the 980m is higher vram capacity 8gb vs the 1060m being 4gb/6gb, checking specs and results the 1060 seems marginal gains and a vram loss in size.

No problem @Vladka76 happy to be wrong 😉 just enquiring if that option had been investigated.
Thanks @JadeRover that was kinda where my head was at with using standardized units for Display then we remove the intermediate board (which seems to be very difficult to obtain) 4K screen would be lovely but may overtax the HW in our 8570w's as previously called out. Would deffo buy the cable once we manage to get them built.
Yeah never got a response from Devilangel on my query, he did an awesome build, TaoBao was a nightmare to navigate.
