  1. Hello. Managed to get the infernal ZIF clip fixed with some superglue and back in business. Never got the 965M card to work so returned it. I heard good things on m2200 card on other posts but seems your hitting similar issues as me. I was looking to buy the eeprom thing as I understood it to be a vbios issue I was hitting. M2200 is the quadro version of the gtx 965m, so intruiged why you hit the issue. I hear dell vbios seems to yield better results
  2. Thanks for the response. I was kinda hoping to resolve without programmer hence looking at what Vbios were viable. As you advise Dell Vbios seems to be a logical choice. I do have decent soldering skills (triple USB/heatsink & linux mod to O2 Joggler (Intel Atom core)). I managed to contact the chap who made the reddit post that started this misadventure (anthonyBF2) he also advised no vbios was changed when he installed. Just the INF mod, so this seems to align with your path of using Dell VBios so thats reassuring. no issue buying a selection of cards (m2200/965M/980M) to play with as this is the long slog on this machine. 🙂 TBH even having 3 GPU card selection, getting display output is priority then comes the mad scientist Heatsink mods (ex-engineer 😉 so have mill & lathe access 🙂
  3. Yeah that was where my head was going with newer tech but keeping elitebook shell. I was trying to keep within elitebook family hence looking at g9/g10 or newer. that’s understandable with your health challenges, save your energy good sir. I was merely looking to pick your brains on what GPU vbios worked with what, been scouring the NBF archives which show a lot of 8770 work but not as much 8570w but do seem to call out the 8570 is more restrictive (but not sure why if it runs same SBios) I seem to recall you tried the 965/980m early on in this saga, did they work with standard HP vbios or dell? I can order either, however recent adventure resulted in no output on 8570w with a 956m (assumed hp vbios) on vga or display, however I saw a post where some card output to display port but not others until correct drivers / inf mod done. So maybe that’s what I was experiencing as I didn’t have the DP cable to output to.
  4. just seen the post. Running an 8750W - i7-3940Xm / 32gb@1866mz / 1Tb HDD / 1TB Msata / k1000M GPU. Been working on GPU upgrades recently with some success (k2000M / failiures (965M). also upgrading heatsink assembly to improve cooling. would like to upgrade screen to DC
  5. Thanks for the detail. Yup without vbios programmer I’m kinda limited. M2000m seems to be a sensible path for out the box-ish that said, which vbios are viable if I can track a 965m with dell or hp vbios? I’d like to still try the 965m path to max the “A” path. Working on a double pipe “A” heatsink at moment. im still a bit confused as if bios .71 on 8570&8770 is the same (currently updated bios to .71), therefore what restricts POsT/boot display in a 8570. If say an 980m in a 8770w works then by same logic it should be fine in 8570? That said we can rule out bios as being factor for boot hiccup. So vbios is the challenge, what brand and what version? I can buy a ch314a programmer but still stuck if I don’t have vbios images unique to dell/hp. Only version I do have is from nvidia site so a vanilla version unless it asks target machine upon install? I may have stumbled on a Clevo 965M on ebay, so im on the fence whether i go for that. are Clevo Vbios viable to work on the 8570W's?
  6. Thanks for the update. Bios was .71 (final release from Hp) tried in both uefi with and without csm modes in bios. No joy no output (no bios boot display or win loading, just black) Previous post elsewhere on Reddit mentions legacy mode results in non boot So with that in mind maybe card has wrong vbios. As you mentioned dell vbios seems to work with our machines but no way of verifying what vbios this 965m has. So maybe this doesn’t have HP or Dell vbios. so if bios versions are same on 8570/8770 it has to be card. i don’t possess a ch314a bios programmer to redo the vbios so im stuck. I’ve triggered a return to seller, will continue to hunt a suitable card. A shame as it was only Type A seller I found in a while. Also seen an 8770w heatsink I will continue to build a type B card option for the 8570. id be happy to send a card to you guys to flash the right vbios. That said i'm not quite sure a service centre would entertain such work 😉 I'd happily pay you guys for the work
  7. Just been scrolling through the old NBR archives and noticed a few familiar renegades 😉 http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/8770w-compatible-video-cards.795753/page-2 question with my 965m headache is why 8770w had a lot more “working” cards. It seems bios / vbios options weren’t as bad on the bigger brother 8770? can anyone shed any light why the 965m wouldn’t/ work on the 8570w? Or even a 950m which is type A, at this point I’m happy to try wedging the 970/980m in, but would like to know what bios/vbios mods are needed. 965m was a proper rare beast to track down, whereas 970/980 are a lot more plentiful
  8. Did you manage to resolve this? Just been updating my 8570W with a 965M Type A card, also has no output on screen or on a VGA cable / monitor. As far as im aware it is N16E-GR-A1 which should work with HP, Zbook, dell 7710 etc. so i dont think its a bad card. But would appreciate insight. just to add, swapped back the k1000m (but broke a ribbon cable clip in process(do they even sell these clips separate?) and the laptop fires back into life and works fine. Edit: spoke too soon machine works for about 5-10mins, using GPU-z and hwinfo, temps are good 55-65 and 37 for cpu and GPU. Then fan goes full and machine locks up. Will try a repaste
  9. Well, after much work, i finally had time to put the 965M into the 8570w. All seemed to go ok, However, No output on screen or from the VGA port on the side either. However i can hear the machine spinning up, fan goes full then slows down ( so not getting the fan full speed issue). Whilst i know it needs the driver to be present, im not getting any output. Beginning to suspect the GPU is bad, so will refit the K1000M back in. I verified it was in UEFI mode on Windoze before i went to dissasemble so could it have reverted in Bios? edit: checked and it’s uefi-with CSM. tried once more with uefi-without CSM, no dice...... well much late night tinkering (this time with coffee) 😉 and k1000m back in and all works again. Ugh, so seems a 965m output/inf issue? I7-3940xm has Intelhd but it’s disabled I believe so no basic output to try and get machine to like the new card. so next steps would be vbios update? But how when I get no GPU output to run NVinstall. I can’t run install with k1000m in surely as 965m isn’t connected to be “seen” Should I return 965m and go 980M? But which card with what vbios that works should I order? i suspect the whitelist is kicking in as "officially" its only k2000M and FirePro4000M, therefore how did GuitarG or any of you guys get around it? Seller advised it had hp vbios (so it should "see" it) Could i send you guys my 965M to flash?? kinda loathe sending it back as seen no others since. another edit: sourced the 965M bios, https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/184954/nvidia-gtx965m-4096-160107 but not quite sure how to get it on card or verify card already has it on. (The 8570w doesn’t have two mxm slots so I can’t run one and flash the other) with no VGA i cant use IntelHD either. ugh...... further edit. I think without the ability to edit bios on 8570w I’m stuck on changing whitelist to allow 965m to work. I don’t think it’s a vbios issue. However I am intruiged how @GuitarG managed to get his 965m working before he went the 980m route. May end up returning the 965m to seller and pausing the GPU upgrade path.
  10. Nice work, I'm intruiged why the standard 1000M MXM card detected the new screen and not the plethora of different cards youve had in that machine. 4K screen in a 3rd Gen elitebook is waaaay cool. Still gotta find time to throw the 965M into my 8570W (i know i'll have the backlight issue to fix when i do) if you an let me know the screen serial / component number i can order and try on my 965M when i get a chance
  11. Another idea, probably daft as sleep deprived and caffeine was no bueno that late. But with all the screen mods, would something like a 840 G9 elitebook mobo work shoehorned into a spacious 8570W or 8770W shell. in theory its still 40 pin screen connector and keyboard / trackpad should be viable. Akin to the framework / frankenpad ideas elsewhere. Happy to be shot down on the idea.
  12. Hi All, Not quite a G2 user yet, but rocking an older 8750W elitebook with the 965M (type A) Mod. I did consider the 980M (Type B) and the 1050 (type A) as options on par with the M2200 card called out here, I'm intruiged of the Maxwell Bios Mod Can anyone share any further details? Also with the NVFlash beyond having correct NVIDIA drivers to enable card to work, are there any VBIOS images for the GTX 965M card needed to flash it?
  13. i have 1866mhz DDR3L's in my 8570W, CPU-Z shows as 1600mhz in Mempage, but in SPD page they are 899x2 so 1800. Not sure if they can be OC'd would love to know as i still havent found a set of 2133's yet, they are proving to be tooo elusive.
  14. as an 8570W owner (baby brother of the 8770w) im intruiged as to some of the mods, Nice work so far I'm currently running i7-3940XM, 32Gb (1866mhz HyperX) Samsung 870 4Tb & 1TB MSata SSD with a 965M MXM card. Love the lid cover too umbrella Corp 🙂 is there any data on Custom cable and display? i know my Mobo maxes out at 980M or 1060M MXM cards. running a normal display not the DC one.
  15. Finally my 965M Type A arrived (yay), second try, first one never existed from buyer..... long story. Running the 3940XM and 1866 DDR3L ram nicely. also running a 200w brick so i dont run out of juice. Time to crack open the case (again) PTM 3950 and MX-4 at the ready.... Did anyone ever work out the CPU fan JST plug pin pitch? i think its JST-GH (1.25mm P-P) Also did anyone have success with CoreBoot for 8570W? Apologies for all the questions. 🙂
  16. my K1000M was always pushed hard hence looking at 965M upgrade 😄 That said with the Alchemist cards they must be "outputting" to something the MoBo has on the MXM card edge so why wouldnt it work with the elitebook?
  17. Actually was looking at this card trying to work out how the DVD port allows addressing and the ODDBay GPU output back to the screen as it doesnt appear to have edge HDMI or any connector on DVD bay side.
  18. was the driver update done post or pre card install? i see some users have backlight issues until drivers are done. I have the latest 965M nvidia driver and also NVFlash files for it, so hoping for some level of success wen i drop the 965M card in. I know its not going to be as simple as drop the card in like some YT vids seem to show. On a different note, did anyone get the MSATA ssd card to boot via bios edits??
  19. thanks for that, yep that was the earlier pages i was referring to which showed the fan without chassis sat in the DVD bay i couldnt quite see from the pics the cable feed from fans hence the ask 🙂 . i can see various Aliexpress splitter leads for desktop machines but the tiny tiny JST on laptops is sooo much smaller. i could mod the current fan but would be happier with a splitter as it reduces the risk of frying fan IC. however Both fans will only be seen as one. obviously cant be set at different speeds as they are one fan port. To create a splitter isnt impossible for us awesome soldering skills, just finding the connectors to create a solution. Even taking the 5v line from DVD port give power but PWM control is only via CPU fan so both will rotate the same RPM (i think).
  20. Are there any pics of the dual fan lead? i saw the fan mod in the now vacant DVD bay as 980M negated DVD port and ability to use. I'm trying to search Ali and google to identify what the fan connector (tiny what looks like JST) port on the mobo to see if a dual splitter lead exists to take from the Fan connector by CPU. Although something make me think the DVD port 5v was used? Now ive secured a 965M im tempted to run the GPU H/sink mod on the "A" type card to improve the cooling.
  21. Nice work for 27$, 8770W? What screen did it come with? now you can try the full size cards. Oh, Managed to track down a 965M A finally so im almost catching up. The 965M card is from a Clevo, should that cause me any issues in working with the HP? i dont think its got whitelist issues? N16E-GR-A1 is the GTX core. has N16E-GR V2.1 4gb -77-P75DL-D02 on sticker. just wanted confirmation before i order.
  22. Just an update, Now running the 3940XM Core with TPM9750 and the 14900 / 1866 DDR3L HyperX ram (32Gb) couldnt find the uber-rare 2133 sticks....yet. Ram was easy, forgot the whole top cover comes off for CPU. although seeing some YT video's some of the lesser elitebooks have no black plastic or reduced frame web in the middle so CPU/GPU cooler can come out. Anyone reduced a 8570W frame to assist component removal without top case removal? So that was fun. Still on the hunt for 965M type A, i did notice the 1050M exists in type A and it seems more easy to obtain, would there be any reason why it wouldnt work in the 8570?
  23. That is all valid, i know other users have pushed the mobo to its limits running the hungry cards and limited the mobo longevity. Does anyone know the sensible limit they were designed for? I am running a 200w PSU as the 75W unit was getting toasty. So i have headroom, but 200w into a mobo and DC jack not designed might fail elsewhere. 980M as you say might be doable (with H'sink from 8770 and DVD port mod / select bay delete) trying to source the micro JST cables for fan splitter is proving fun as they seem too big a connector) Anyone know their name?. The Type "A" journey ends at 965M it seems as i dont have DC screen and scouring Ebay etc, only finds a type B 965M card (which i dont think will fit the 8570W without clipping the DVD port. 980M's seem more plentiful. The only 965m "A" card i found on Ali was N16E-GR-A1 Did you have any issues with your 980 clevo card? i see some list HP/Dell/Clevo etc so its difficult to identify correct card part number to get hold of. do you have a part number sticker or N16 chip marker in the 980?
  24. That is helpful, not yet at the crazy modding MXM boards yet. I noticed there was a 980M board earlier in the thread that additional 220nf caps and FETs were added to improve. whilst 980M i think (please correct if wrong) is final incarnation of the 900 series maxwell board at 8GB, so odd they leave unpopulated, that said its an MXM B so might be reused in the 10 series before the card design went all weird. I'm comfortable soldering those on (dont have hot-air station) but couldnt see orientation in picture (didnt want to solder a cap backwards and wonder why card wont work). Ideally for me id like to minimise the Vbios work and fingers crossed its just new Nvidia drivers loaded with H'sink mods to make a card work in my 8570w Looking at Mobile PCI Express Module - Wikipedia itwould appear the mighty RTX 4050/4060 (lovelace generation) is the final "type A" to be able to fit and use the standard H'sink in the 8570W. However i suspect drivers & Vbios might scupper that
  25. Thanks for the response. indeed, im sure the t1000 isnt far off the older 965M and will use the same heatsink size. (happy to go "big" if it enables more card options (albeit with more risk of working). I see the newer 1070/1060 cards are options but are newer generation and give MXM-Type A capability. That said more work to enable (comparable to 980M "big". Happy to heatsink mod (ex-Engineer 😉 ) I think for me the less "driver mod" options which will probably push me to 965M/980M anyways. I notice alot of the MXM "B" boards have unpopulated sockets/solder locations for stuff like RAM and caps / fets etc. why is that? For the 980M was there a specific part / serial number board that worked?
