  1. The M chips are making me consider a Mac book with a Windows Vm...
  2. So my newest machine hung this morning and had to be force rebooted. The oldest is already on a scheduled daily reboot. Every time Windows p1sses me off enough to think Linux, i come to the same conclusion; it's a nice idea but volunteer developers aren't enough to make a viable platform for me. Crossing my fingers the April updates fix whatever the F**k Msft broke in the February updates.
  3. Some fond-ish memories of it, but it was when i was working in banking software. A time best forgotten outside of nightmares... Kinda cool you got it up in a vm. Might do that with Windows 2000 some day.
  4. Geezus... it apparently has to be done every reboot now. i guess y'all have given up on notebooks entirely. looks like i'll be following you down that path. my oldest machine, consigned to host ftp, now requires a daily scheduled reboot. feels like we're back in the days of 16 bit windows.
  5. @#@#... Msft changed the guid on power plans. I changed it to balanced and high performance disappeared. below brot it back. it's much better now... powercfg -restoredefaultschemes powercfg /aliases powercfg /s SCHEME_Min powercfg /l
  6. I used to unzip 100 gig db file in 50-ish seconds, now it takes 5-6 minutes. I'm on an Msi Titan notebook with a 13980 cpu.
  7. I was starting to contemplate rerunning the cable in the wall.
  8. quick glance at Google indicates 7 was a dead end. if you're running cable in walls, probably go 8. 6a appears to be fine for 10g.
  9. Its network connection was still flakier than normal. I replaced its new (as of the time i bot it) cat7 cable with a 6a and moved the cat7 to another machine which immediately started flaking out. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ So far so good...
  10. The whole Killer thing may be solved. I've spent the past year fiddling with driver switches to no avail. I just dug into their too-busy app and found a "maximize throughput" setting and turned it on. It hasn't dropped the connection in over 24 hours. Not sure whether to be embarrassed... 🫰
  11. "Unhappy" is a little too strong for where I am with them. Annoyed that they have a compromised keyboard when there's ample room for a full one. Killer, I'm not sure if it's their issue or my environment, just wanting an alternative to see which it is. Yeah, the 18 inch Titan is an attractive option except for the stupid cramped keyboard. It comes in over 6k with everything I want. I think I'm just going to upgrade the wifi in the machine I have. My inner Scrooge will be pleased...
  12. Interesting, thx. I'm a fan of Xmg since they solved my 128 gig issue in the x170. I may just live with 64. Or live with Msi...
  13. yeah i figured i could probably get it configured right offline, for triple the cost...😜
  14. Man, workstation gets up to double the cost of the Clevo real quick, with half its guts... and it only allows 2 drives with Raid0. Yeah, options are limited. Xotic throws in a notebook cooler and various extra cooling options as you add features. Nothing's really ideal anymore, but memory also has rose colored glasses... Old Sagers were loud as jet engines.
  15. Yeah, not even 10% performance boost from 13980 to 14900. I need 3 drives. I'd like the 18 inch but it's qhd and i like uhd.
  16. X370. Yeah there are no real dtrs anymore. Waiting for Sager to allow 48 gig ram chips or Xpc to allow wifi7. Thinking about replacing the killer card but don't harsh my vibe... I just convinced my inner Scrooge to allow an upgrade ahead of time... I have the machine running out to the tv over display port/hdmi. I suspect that causes interference with ethernet. Tried a dongle but it had issues too. Wifi7 should give wireless performance similar to wired ethernet. 🫰
  17. Wired ethernet, not wifi. Not sure if wifi's better... Keyboard's annoying but otherwise good. light, quiet, fast. relative to behemoth dtr machines...
  18. After a year I'm giving up on it. Killer ethernet is too unreliable to live with. I'm also forgiving Xotic as Msi didn't publish proper specs on their Raid setup. Going back to Clevo too as they're apparently the only full keyboard on a dtr-ish notebook. Maybe it's just an excuse to let myself get wifi7...
  19. Xmg bios solved that for me. it was fine for a year or so then suddenly objected to having all its slots filled. I gave 32 gig to an older machine and one of its ssds to the server. Thankfully, it was already replaced as my primary workstation. It's now demoted to secondary backup.
  20. Oh, and let us know your M18 experience. I'm probably going to try them when it has Wifi7 and i9-14*.
  21. Wow, more than i thot... but the process of cannibalizing it brot it back from the dead. Some combination of 128gigs ram, raid0, and this machine's inherent flakiness caused the whole thing. RDrive fired me as a customer for their backup utility. A very helpful gesture in the middle of disaster recovery... so i'm reinstalling all its software from scratch and finding a reliable backup utility.
  22. oh right, you guys are more gpu oriented... i guess, if it's not a hassle. what's it worth to you? RTX 3080 w/ 16 GB
  23. Started with my backup utility invalidating its license, saying it was different hardware. Then the next Windows update disabled half its devices. Did a restore and it blue screened. I'll cannibalize everything i can into other machines. I guess someone might want the cpu. It's an i9 11900k, ran 24/7 for 3 years in Ultimate Performance profile.
  24. Mine just died and i'm debating whether to bother fixing it. It's been a pita its whole life.
