  1. In regards to the brightness, my M4800 has a panel rated for 300nits. As of now there's still nothing ideal, since either model has a downside on one specific part over the other (which is pathetic, come on now don't integrate the entire palmrest). I don't think the Legion is gonna be the laptop for me, as I just watched a video of someone actively using a soldering iron to uninstall the keyboard... This is severely reducing my options further.
  2. BenQ SW240 Pro. I had an iiyama ProLite XUB2395WSU-B1, which is now used by my Dad. I don't use it a lot though.
  3. Waiting for a day where I see type As with more than 4GB video memory. Otherwise I could see this in a M6800... that is if it works.
  4. I noticed on the WX4150 in my Dell is that the fans take forever to kick in and havent' figured out a fix through a VBIOS flash... What must I do to alleviate this?
  5. So I've been looking since this post. I had a look at Legion but discovered some didn't have a good panel or build quality was questionable. I didn't mention that low noise emission was also a requirement. I did find a laptop, that was a potential candidate and it's an Acer ConceptD 14in but reading some reviews yields conflicting opinions with theirs. Some say the keyboard isn't great and it's a loud unit yet other reviews say otherwise. It's become quite a challenge now... Yikes. I may have to wait until there's either a decent deal or hold on until there's something ideal on sale.
  6. So the pack arrived. Albeit the snag now is that they're too long for what they're for but surprisingly they work fine. The length of the pins is ever so slightly shorter. Had to origami it a little bit to fit properly. It's making the proper connections meaning the touchpad and top buttons work as well as the little nub. But if anyone is looking for a replacement then in my opinion is not exactly it. The original cable is rated for 105C, while the other is 80C. And since it's situated near the GPU when installed is a minor concern.
  7. That's even better, because Dell in 2013 used boards that had eDP to LVDS converters and as a result you'd have different lid variants as well as hinge and covers too. I think they changed to eDP around 2014/2015. It was incredibly tedious trying to source a new MB, new lid with the hinges and even the connector to transform my M4800 from LVDS to eDP. So, I guess if it's eDP the thing to note here is that if you put in a UHD panel it'll disable iGPU. It won't disable the iGPU if you opt for a panel beyond 60Hz that's at 1080p. Mine is 120Hz, but I went with the TN due to the apparent accurate colour reproduction. It's a N156HHE-GA1. It also means if the panel sucks then you can change it to something better providing it has the right mounting holes.
  8. You might have to, but I'm not absolutely sure if it's necessary, since GPU to GPUs some cards have the same height when it comes to the chip. Alternatively you could apply a shim to the current heatsink as some have done back in the old thread on NBR. It should be on the archive link. As for Honeywell I never tried that but others who have, have said it's really good and is used by OEMs like Lenovo for their machines. Actually I might reconsider and get that one too for my Dell, since that can get toasty if I video edit and would be nice to have better thermals.
  9. I have Gelid GC Extreme paste in mine, and its a 4810MQ. I also have limited in Power Management on Windows to 99% CPU cap. GPU wise I find AMD cards better in a way because you do not have to mod the drivers at all to get it working. It just works, providing it has a Dell VBIOS on it. I use a WX 4150 4GB card which is good enough, but they can be difficult to find that aren't originating fom China. Originally my WX4150 was intended for HPs, but I was able to flash a Dell VBIOS on it to use it properly. But there are a couple others. Personally I wouldn't use a GPU that does not have Direct X 12_0 or 12_1 featureset. Meaning the M2000M or M1200M are out of the question. I have been looking into a new GPU as well, and have been looking into the T1000 but budget is extremely tight, and sourcing one is difficult if you wanna avoid AliExpress. The Quadro M2200 could be a viable alternative. I wouldn't recommend the M2000M or M1200M due to the lack of DirectX12_0 featureset.
  10. I only just noticed in GPU-Z the Radeon Pro WX4150 is showing up as x8 PCIe for the bus interface? Is that normal? Seems that GPU runs at that instead according to Techpowerup but surely that's false? AMD says it's x16 so I have no idea what's happening here and I don't know what's true. I might try clean the contacts and reseat the thing a little later to see any changes.
  11. So I've been looking into a new machine for a while now. Not because I wish to decommission my (I guess custom) HP and Dell workstations. But things can change, so I'm now looking into a new machine and albeit I have tech experience; I'm pretty picky. I should mention my needs for a system is a good SRGB/DCI-P3 panel, upgradeable RAM and storage, it's a must. I haven't done these ever, I'd appreciate any suggestion or help! Thanks! General Questions 1) What is your budget? £800 to £1100 2) What size notebook would you prefer? a. Ultraportable; 10" - 12" screen c. Thin and Light; 13" - 14" screen d. Mainstream; 15" - 16" screen e. Desktop Replacement; 17"+ screen 3) In which country will you buying this notebook? Great Britain 4) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like? a. Like: Acer, MSI, Medion, Dell, HP b. Not necessary. ========== END COPY
  12. So, I wasn't sure where else to get a new cable. I looked into AliExpress and saw this. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003087841893.html 8-pin at 15cm. Not sure what the pitch is (I assume its the width of each pin) but from the looks of it, it's what I may be looking for. I may order a pack just to be sure I don't get something dodgy within the package. If all goes well then I could recommend this to anyone who is looking for a new flex for the touchpad since these can be brittle after replacing the top assembly if you miss out something. Not too expensive either, and even if it means waiting for a few weeks it's worth the wait.
  13. Needs to have gears to increase productivity power. I swear I'd fly through the house if I pedalled on one of these.
  14. Well, the new KB arrived albeit one minor snag... One corner was bent where the Esc key is. But the backlight works as well as the keys. Bit of a bummer, oh well. Now I have faced an issue where the trackstick hasn't been picked up by the BIOS, as nothing is responding other than the touchpad... Welp. EDIT: I found out the cause... One of the pads on the touchpad ribbon cable was folded. But why? Why not add a second ZIF connector on the board for the touchstick? What the Hell, Dell? So I unfolded it as best I could and its' working again. But I still am considering to source a replacement sometime... A better clarification is that the touchpad has a pin, just one pin for the touchstick but it's still a strange way, considering its not using the pins that connect the keyboard.
  15. A new Dell backlit keyboard for the M4800.
  16. My M4800 is still going well, albeit soon I have to consider sourcing a replacement keyboard and a new CPU fan. Only because, if the current KB decides to shed the keys or the fan decides to buzz and unable to resolve it. The 120HZ panel is still doing well too, along with the WX 4150. It was very stressful getting the machine together though. And it was because I encountered hurdles with the motherboard and panel and lid AND the bezel. The only thing not changed is the base unit chassis and the heatsinks, the keyboard and its keyboard bezel. At the moment I've run into an issue where the pointing stick is just gone, not even device manager is picking it up so I'm gonna investigate that. Already reseated the keyboard but I don't know if I'm missing a ribbon cable on it or something. Update: I ordered a backlit spare for the machine to keep aside until I need it. I'm still unsure if this is the only known machine with a 120Hz panel as I don't know if anyone else has installed anything higher than 60hz in these machines (they need eDP.) The other issue here is that since I've been more bored I started gaming on it, and now if I game on it I'd rather use a proper gaming laptop for the purpose. That, and parts grow scarce as the machine grows old. When the time comes I'm installing Windows 7 Professional on it, with a video editor that's also capable running on 7. The same will happen to the Zbook 15.
  17. Howdy. I was a member of NBR before they shut down, but got a little busy and must've forgotten about it. Hopefully I'll frequent here. Still rocking my M4800 and the Zbook 15 G2. They're still going good but really ought to consider a new system real soon.
