Sorry to hear, not how you want to spend your holiday. 32C over the weekend in the UK. Pretty crazy to see this and similar temps all the way up in Norway. Yeah, A/C is a must now - wasn’t quite the case 10 years ago… -

Insufficient VRAM would go a long way towards explaining the catastrophic slowdown. Did you actually observe VRAM being full (HWInfo etc) Perhaps @Clamibot can suggest some command line trick to scale the assets down so it all fits in 6GB... I assume you tried the the FHD-low preset, but perhaps there is more than can be done. -

Well, I tried Lutris, latest libs, DLSS support etc. Hard crash somewhere in unityplayer, no debug info. could have been because I had less than 2GB of VRAM available at the time, but then would expect an appropriate error message. Good luck, you might need it with this one bro. I mean @Custom90gt didn't manage to run it on Windoze.... probably fair to assume it’s not the most stable and polished piece of software. -
Trying to switch from Windows to Linux, ongoing issues thread

Yeah, I was assuming it's disabled, until I received a suggestion to call someone at a particular time lol. To be fair, I can see that as a great feature if I make it to my late 80s. Either way, if this was on device then no problem, but presumably it's not. Completely disabling this behaviour is painful, because any time I install a new app, I have to go to setting and deselect "Learn from this app", "Include in search" etc. Same thing with this "Memories" feature where it generates slideshows. It's done in the cloud since it doesn't work with network off, even though I have iCloud disabled for now. Not great TBH. -

OK, so it has been 6 years of iOS updates plus a further period of security updates - that completely outclasses Android. My previous Android flagship got maybe one OS update, I am not sure, and maybe a year or two of patches lol. Now Samsung are promising something like 5 years of security updates, and G. generously offers 4 on their own phone.... As you say, they don't have a formal policy on this, but similarly there is no guarantee they won't close the handy stores, or become worse than G. on AI and privacy in the next few years. We have to hope for the best, although those bad outcomes seem unlikely at the moment. One thing that surprised me about iOS is that some (just a few) apps work slightly better on Android (for instance Signal offers local message backups on Android, but not iOS) - this is unexpected, I guess that means that the Android app market is larger. It's hard to fault the screen (mini LED is probably the better screen choice for laptops anyway, given the burn-in risk you get with OLED) or aesthetics of Macbooks, but he list of things that have been putting me off them includes the light design aimed at casual users, and the completely closed build - no way to officially upgrade anything. Unless they change this, I will probably stick to Wintel or maybe try a Linux laptop, given my very limited native Windows app requirements. Yes, the ARM-based silicon probably ameliorates some of the performance concerns. One thing that really surprised was the full client-side encryption they offer on iCloud, plus they do point out if ML algos run locally and no data is sent home. Android sends 20x more data to Google than iOS sends to Apple, study says One exception is Siri and search which are aggressively on by default on everything (including the "learn from app and its concent"), and is a bit of a pain to disable and keep it that way. Oh well, there isn't any option at the moment, other than go full ghetto with degoogled custom Android ROMs. -
A bit more Twitter fun: Not quite accurate though, since existential AI threat warnings were already issued by fairly significant scientific authorities, namely Alan Turing himself, that would be back in the 1960s, as well as Stephen Hawking (in the 2010s). Another Tweet from one of the founders of OpenAI: lya Sutskever @ilyasut · Jun 23 A one sentence articulation (of existing ideas) for why AI alignment need not be straightforward: humans can lie, hide their intent (alignment), and do so for years. Why not AGI? This can be hard to detect. He only realised this now? Perhaps those guys are not as smart as they need to be in their position of extreme power.

Looks like a well worked-out rationale. I recently dumped Android for iOS, part of a slow-burning effort to degoogle. It's not perfect, but quite smooth overall, and there seems to be more care for privacy and personal data (not to mention something like 10 years of updates if needed). Might give macOS a go myself at some point in the future, albeit I expect Linux to remain hard to beat for heavy lifting. -

Somewhat depends on what you need the card for. 4090 is the better card on average (highly dependent on the use case: 0-1.8x faster), with a clear win in gaming, not least because of gamer-oriented software gimmicks, not made available on Ampere in order to force upgrades. That said the dimensions are a serious snag for multi-GPU setups, as - once again - is the lack of NVLink. I can totally imagine NVidia doing this on purpose in an attempt to sell more of those ridiculously overpriced A6000s, and prevent people from stacking multiple cards for gaming instead of overpaying for new models. -

Err, they are slimmer and presumably lighter than the chungus-class 4090s..... As for hot, 66C at a bit under 200W, 32C ambient (hello global warming), and fans at 1100RPM/30%, is not bad, right? :) Just saw a 3090Ti FE scalped on Amazon (with Prime delivery lol) at £1950, roughly $2500. Seriously regretting not grabbing two back when they were available from Nvidia for less than £1100, don't remember exactly. -

Take care, rest up and get well soon… therapeutic as I’m sure some would find learning a light language such as Norwegian 😉 -
As usual: when it's too late.

It's good that something is happening, although so far it looks like smoke and mirrors. No concrete action to control the research of concern, quite the opposite. The government also put out an “AI bill of rights,” laying out guidelines for how federal agencies should use AI. And the National Science Foundation has allocated new funding for AI research. I mean how many US politicians have the background to fully grasp the problem. I would go out on a limb here and say zero, no offense. Also, relationships with China seems to be undergoing further deterioration, which will fuel the death race.

I like how we are debating a nonsensical suggestion at best. Even if creating one’s own OS was an option (practically impossible for a single person in a reasonable timeframe, no matter how talented, taking into account the sheer amount of effort involved alone), it would certainly cause significant headaches - for many reasons, including the one mentioned by @Reciever

What do you mean off-topic? The title says: *Official Thread* - Post it here or it didn't happen :D ;) Yeah, you can try to work around the inadequate software support of many Android phones, but that's more hacking than regular usage. You have to assume the risk of using an OS developed by an often not-so-clearly defined 3rd party, and in some cases you may not be able to do it at all (that's what google-suggested threads on xda seemed to be advising regarding Galaxy Ultra S23, as an example). Technically, many flagships are still very usable 5+ years on, and iOS devices get software updates for 8 years if not longer. -

Good piece of regulation, but battery is no longer the primary limiting factor on the useful lifespan of a phone. The lack of updates (in case of most Android devices) is probably the main one. They should require manufacturers to provide system and security updates for 7 years. I if the phone battery is not user-replaceable, they should require the manufacturer to provide a reasonably priced battery replacement service. Free market is a naive hypothetical construct,, there is no such thing, and we only need to look at the GPU space to see that very clearly. Someone needs to take a stand to defend the little man, and it sure as hell won’t be megacorporations or self-interested billionaires. -
Another survey showing a staggering levels of concern - this time among top US CEOs: 42% of CEOs say AI could destroy humanity in five to ten years Meanwhile, a bit older piece suggests a solution to the economic problem of a 'serious number of losers', straight from a top AI research lab. Yes, a $1000/month UBI scheme - I guess enough to live in a cabin in a remote part of Montana, Unabomber style: DeepMind founder says governments need to compensate 'serious number of losers' who will be left jobless due to AI

Really silly of the dude to have riddled his home security and privacy with surveillance devices operated remotely by big tech.

Thanks @Reciever. For the avoidance of doubt I personally won’t tolerate any blunt ad hominem attacks, not to mention inane physical threats. Part of the allure of the forum is that it’s not Reddit or Twitter where such behaviours would be par for the course (presumably). On top of that, in the interest of maintaining a decent level of debate, let’s strive to think prospective posts through to ensure the points being made make sense, and format them so they are readable (certainly not a realistic request on Reddit or Twitter lol). Thank you, and let’s continue our humble thread on what could prove to be the most important topic in human history.

Obviously there must be a market for the Hello Kitty/Anime-themed gear in Asia. Relax bro, nobody in their right mind is going to try and sell you pink gear 🙂 -
With quite a few people out there being just aggressive simpletons, unable to hold a civil conversation and perhaps naively hoping AI will solve their problems, some say we deserve to be replaced by an artificial super-intelligence. Since I still have some hope for humanity, I have been trying disagree but now and then you come across the kind of people that make that argument more compelling.
