When I had the Unify and A-die sticks before my 12900k topped out at 7400 and tuned, it at best matched my CL15 4133 B-die setup on the Z690 D4 with WoW and FO76 runs (so I returned the Unify and sold the stocks at no loss) so any upgrade I would want at least 7800+ which is re-entering A-die, 13900k/ks and 2-dimm solution (along with board hunting). That's when I decided to give AMD another chance. I'll revisit Intel in the fall with the RPL refresh and prices of Z790 boards falling. Heh.... I mean they definitely do not NOT suck atm.... 🙂

Congrats! How far were you able to push A-die's on the Strix Z690-E? (2x16GB,SR) I just finished testing 2 more sets of M-dies and they were worse than my current set so it will be A-die from here on out (or B-die's which are up next).

Return of the luggables! 🙂 Many (MANY) moons ago, I had a Compaq portable that was pretty chunky and hefty. It was meant for site to site work like the one you linked. I like the fact this one has a 24" display and basically an empty case to hold components and it is open air so they can just breathe. You really would be able to modernize it however you see fit within its constraints. It's a biggun though but I do like the idea....

Covid had me down for 5 weeks struggling to breathe and 2-3 months to fully recover early on (April 2020). Second time about two weeks. Last time I barely noticed it and if I didn't have a stack of tests at home I would have never known. Caught the flu a few months back. Went from, "I feel odd" telling the wife to within 24hrs the highest temp I've ever had in life (103.4) and feeling like I was burning up from the inside. I was down for a week and it took me a few weeks to fully recover. I lost 10lbs just being sick too. For me it was variant B.

I've just started the preliminary work for binning some 12900k processors for this Clevo NH55 and it did dawn on me that unless something radically changes, this will be my last run at this process I've enjoyed immensely since back in the Core 2 days.... 😞

That thing is beastly and we've reached a point of BGA laptops just burying what's left of old school DTRs CPU and GPU wise 😞 I totally feel you on the max fans. One of my approaches for laptops for decades has been to minimize noise for day to day use even if performance suffers because I don't want to sit there with a screeching beast while trying to use it.

I'm sure it's not the problem but I've encountered a few cheap/knock off hubs that wire their pseudo-aRGB ports in serial and require a specific order to light up. Have you tried just plugging one fan header into each individual port (including the one that works) to see what happens? How many ports total? I'm using a thermalright hub in mine they sent me to test and it is as generic/real aRGB headers as it gets and just works and only works via the MB. I do see value in those "proprietary" type hubs as you usually get a killer price for a hub and 4-6 fans. Having evaluated several of them I noticed the non aRGB "proprietary" connector is all the same and the fans are interchangeable.

The inherent constraints in laptops in regards to thermals and power delivery deployed by makers do make them susceptible to point failures (usually GPU first) that made truly modular and upgrade enabled laptops my usual go to. GPU fails? Replace it or better yet upgrade it. Want to upgrade your CPU later on? No problem. Looking for a better silicon specimen for cooler running? Ok. Treat laptops with the same dignity as desktops. Now we've truly entered the age of single point failure laptops taking the entire thing with it and unless you want to do board level repairs (and even that isn't a given with proprietary parts in play sometimes) you make sure you have an extended warranty. Throw in overclocking and exceeding system tolerances and you get some truly brutal stories of laptop failures either acute or chronic in nature.

In terms of a nice DTR with a state of the art gaming CPU coupled with Nvidia's 4090m? Yeah, I'd be interested most definitely. Definitely not a tinkerer's laptop but something I would take with me on travels and use for everything. When I'm on the road for months this fall I'll definitely be picking up a used Titan or Alienware M18. Unless Framework catches on it doesn't matter what powers the CPU in a laptop; the BGA GPU will be there regardless. One reason I decided to give the X3D a try (I did say this last year it was either X3D or 13900k) one of the reasons was Intel's roadmap and Zen 5 which looks to put Intel back into Zen3 vs 11th gen territory again. Even their mobile chips are hot and heavy. For my use later this year, the 7000 series mobile line up is definitely up for consideration. That would end up being an Alienware m18 most likely.

Best Buy rejected my 7950X3D review but accepted my 7800X3D review.... lol Returned the 7950x....er I mean 7950X3D today to Best Buy. If I order again, I think I'll set it for store pick up so I can verify the contents myself this time around but looking at more 7800X3D results and I definitely got a good sample as it is naturally hitting 4824 and staying at 78-80c under full CB23 on an EVGA CLC 360. This is with the new BIOS installed. It is locked to 1.3 now and under full load tops out at ~ 1.310v. Still boggles the mind it pulls 90w total under CB23 and 80c max as is. If there was ever a CPU in search of a DTR laptop chassis, this is it. Moving the Carbon x670E into the main rig today along with a design overhaul....

Pretty much. The bulk of the performance is already there in the XX90 models. The TI just opens up the rest of the GPU (Full fat as we call it) and gives ~8-11% performance bump at most. Then the 5090 will drop and obliterate the 4090ti. Rinse/Repeat. I know I'm an optimist (hope springs eternal), but I hope AMD brings something to the table that can compete at the very top end as the 7900xtx ain't it. They got close with the 6900xt and raw performance. Still have the 7900xtx Taichi in my cart at Amazon. If a cheap open box pops up I might pick it up and put it in the wife's rig then drop her Strix 3080 in my daughter's to replace her 3070 and upgrade the son in law from his 2070 to her 3070.

That or a misprinted or wrong IHS applied. If it had popped up as a 7950X3D when installed I would have been fine either way and just shrugged it off as a printing error / wrong IHS installed. It just seems to not be someone swapping it because where's the value? The difference is $100 (or less) between the CPUs at this point. It would be different if it was an IHS sealed on top of a like a 1700 or even a bottom barrel 7000 series chip like a 7600 but it is a full fledged 7950x?? Either that or someone in the chain has a 7950x and figured a quick swap would be a nice and free upgrade and Johnny end user wouldn't notice it isn't an X3D? I left a couple of review on Best Buy for both the 7800X3D and 7950X3D fiasco that should be showing up in the next few days. I'll probably post it to their forums too just in case it is numerous CPUs either by error or maliciousness. EDIT: Looks like Best Buy doesn't have forums anymore?

Nope, two totally different serial #s and I noticed that the cardboard cover over the clamshell CPU is missing in the 7950X3D box. You can see the serial # on the 7950X and the box here:

Well, this has never happened to me from a retailer before.... I bought both my 7800X3D and 7950X3D from best buy. I've been running my 7800X3D the last week or so and finally went to go switch over to my 7950X3D. Cracked the seal, installed it and up pops a 7950X I double checked in the BIOS, yep, 7950X. Uninstalled it and yep it's a 7950X. I didn't even notice because the box was sealed and a 7950X3D box.

I saw it but I wanted to hold off till I finish collecting more data. My dimms are at 1.35v but according to AMD (giggle) the BIOS and AGESA updates shouldn't effect EXPO or manual Vmem but we'll see. I still have SOC at 1.25v so if I want to push a little before or after the BIOS update I have some room. I just finished an extended FO76 play session on the 7800X3D so I'll switch back to the 12900k and repeat the extended play session tomorrow because you know....science. 🙂 Since worse case is keeping the 7800X3D, after I collect one last set of data from the 12900k I'm going to spend an afternoon for the overhaul and MB upgrade, etc. I'll swap in the 7950X3D then along with a clean install. It will also give me a chance to confirm my LF II 420 is in the recall window and address that and potentially move the EVGA AIO in the main rig while I sort that out. It worked under lighter loads in FO76 (I'm sure if I ran around and went to some of the big open spaces that pull 300w+ it would have shut down) or dialing down the details. As soon as I cranked up WoW to 4k Ultra....shut down every time. I've had it for awhile now so it is outside of its return window so I'll need a replacement. Hopefully they worked on a 2.0 revision.

I moved the Suprim X Liquid 4090 into my test rig with the 7800X3D after doing some test runs. I also hooked up my cablemod EVGA cable for the first time and as soon as WoW would load in (I was in Valdrakken, the CPU slayer) the entire system would keep shutting down. I switched to the included cable and it ran perfect so I'll be reaching out to Cablemod. Well the 7800X3D is clearly superior to the 12900k especially in player heavy areas. Long bench is flight across the entire Dragonflight continent and back. Short run time is a run around Valdrakken (main town square around circle). 7800X3D run actually had many more players since it was evening and still beat the 12900k. In Valdrakken GPU load was usually around 50% with the 12900k. 7800X3D managed to push that up to ~65-72%. During flight runs there were areas where the GPU for the first time had pockets of hitting 99% utilization (!). Something the 12900k never saw. M-Die = 6000 B-Die = 4000 (G1) 12900k = 5.2 all P-Core locked 7800X3D = -30 PBO / +25 mhz boost avg clock = ~5075 AMD has earned the right to go into my main rig and lives to see another day. 🙂 MSI AB Benchmark logs:
