  1. Time for a 7890 and 5880 πŸ˜‰ 7780 will likely use the 7770 chassis . But the 5770 and XPS17 could be ready for a new chassis. But those 18" displays should at least reach 400 nits. Less is pretty much indoor only. And yes, I would carry an XPS18 outdoors πŸ™‚
  2. I chose the KC3000 even though my Dell 7740 has only PCIe 3, because I'll take it over to next laptop. And I found only the WD SN700 to be cheaper when looking for 4TB drives - so I saw no reason to go with a PCIe 3.0 one.
  3. I had an ADATA Gammix S70 Blade 4TB in my Dell Precision 7740: died after 4 days. Freshly installed Win11 all of a sudden blue screened and then the boot device was not accessible. Booted my old Win100 from another partition: SSD shows now as MN-5236 with 2GB size. You find several posts of identical behavior, e.g. on reddit. Exchanged for a Kingston KC3000 4TB (TLC, PCIe 4.0, ~7000mb/s read and write) which works nicely so far.
  4. I think it would be a good idea to point that out in the configurator, to prevent bad surprises when somebody starts with SO-DIMM and thinks, he can switch to 128GB CAMM later on.
  5. With With those slim bezels the XPS 17 is hardly bigger than current 15,6 laptops. So an "XPS 18" should not be bigger than current 17,3 laptops, it would just use the space better. Would be a nice surprise if that would show up. Hopefully with more than 300 nits, 400+ would be nice to allow some work sitting outside in the garden πŸ™‚
  6. I seem to remember that DDR5 SO-DIMM has always ECC. Everything listed here says "on-die ECC": Arbeitsspeicher (RAM) Speicher mit Typen: DDR5/SO-DIMM, Kitgrâße: ab 32GB Preisvergleich Geizhals Deutschland. About €180 for 32GB kits and €330 for 64GB kits - might be the safest to exchange with two identical instead of adding one to an existing from Dell.
  7. Hmm, my new ADATA S70 blade just failed, after 4 days 😞 Win 11 BSOD, no bootable device. Booted into Win10 on my other disk. Disk management shows an uninitialized 2GB disk??? ADATA SSD Toolbox shows a MN-5236 with no size onformation, instead of the S70. Anybody seen such a thing? And advise (except contacting support, which I did)?
  8. Realized the P3 Plus is QLC which I wanted to avoid for my OS drive. So I used the delay to switch to ADATA Gammix S70 Blade 4TB - fits easily and has nice numbers in my 7740 which has only PCIe 3, so the PCIe 4 drive will have to wait for the next laptop to get full specs. Current I see this:
  9. I guess they want to compete in the thin and light market and cut the permutations of combinations. I have the same concern with the 5xxx series (or XPS 15 and 17), where I would like to combine the iGPU with an i7 or i9 - but iGPU can only be ordered with i5. The CPU price difference is shown as 10 to 50 €, but you need to add 680€ for the A2000.
  10. Just checked in germany again: going from the standard 16GB to 64 with CAMM is +850€ (so that is just the diff from 16 to 64GB, 64GB CAMM on its own must be counted even higher, close to 1000€) - after market Kingston ValueRAM SO-DIMM Kit 64GB, DDR5-4800 is around 320€ - tripled price. I guess the new 7x70 Precisions just left the price range acceptable for our purchase department - "normal" dev machines were about 2700 to 3000€ for us.
  11. 21TB of SSD space - not so long ago that 20GB of HDD was a thing πŸ™‚ What speeds do you get with benchmark tools like AS SSD, ATTO and crystal and how about copying stuff between your 980 PRO and the raid? Do 3 PCIe 3 SSDs in RAID0 go above 3.5GB/s when copying data? Looks like a cool setup to store and run a bunch of VMs on.
  12. I am awaiting a Crucial P3 Pro 4TB - preordered for 443€. Might arrive today or tomorrow. Cant use it to its full potential on my 7740 which has only PCIe 3 slots, but will carry it over to the next laptop. I'll report back how it goes. Edit: The initial estimate after pre-order was 19th of Juli, now arrival is estimated in two month - so it will take a while to say something about that model.
  13. Even stranger: I wanted to check the event log entries of one of our DCs and mstsc asked me for my fingerprint before I could logon to the server with user/pwd. That fingerprint check succeeded. Login to my laptop by fingerprint still fails. Hmm... I am waiting for a new SSD (Crucial P3 Pro 4TB) and will setup Windows 11 from scratch and check if the problem remains.
  14. Between my first PIN change in the office and next usage from home several hours went by. I'll try that again on monday. But I think there should have been more than 30 minutes after the PIN reset and several tried to use the finger print reader. We switched from OpenVPN to FortiClient VPN two weaks ago. But I never needed a VPN connection to use my finger print from my home. The IT department had no idea what the reason could be πŸ˜‰
  15. I cannot disable Windows Hello from the settings page. Maybe forced by a group policy?
  16. The error message I get seems to depend on the company network: at home I get "Your credentials could not be verified". When I connect to the corp network with a VPN connection I get "This option is temporarily (or currently) not available." So it seems to be some sort of communication with our company domain which fails.
  17. Mine is a golden square in the palm rest. So maybe FIPS - but it works fast. I read that FIPS tends to be slow. Yes the laptop is domain joined - hybrid domain with local DCs and an AzureAD. Not using a smart card. Just thought that the finger print reader might fall into that category of security devices. The error message I stated is not from the settings page, where you set up the finger prints. That is working. I can remove and add finger prints. Just when I (try to) use if for login, I get the error message, that this option is currently or temporarily not available. I reset my PIN (an option I was given when login with PIN failed) again. No I get "You credential could not be verified" for both PIN and finger print login attempts. Hmm...
  18. After the latest Windows Updates two days ago I cannot login with my finger print reader any more and I found this KB article: KB5005408: Smart card authentication might cause print and scan failures (microsoft.com) Could that be the cause, that my finger print reader is not compliant anymore? I removed and added finger prints, no change, reset my PIN, no change. After I scan my finger, there is a short flicker and than I always get "This option is temporarily not available. Please use a different..." (translated from german, so maybe not exactly the english wording). I think I have the none FIPS version, but not really sure. In device manager I see "Control Vault w/ Fingerprint Touch Sensor" from broadcom. Is there any tool to check for hardware and software compliance of the scanner and its driver? The driver shows 5.9.3.1 from 16.12.2021
  19. The german site shows WWAN for one FullHD+ screen and that adds the WWAN card as well. Dell Precision 7670 40,64 cm (16") Mobile Workstation: Dell Workstations | Dell Deutschland
  20. Going from 16GB CAMM to 64GB CAMM adds 831,51€ while you get 64GB DDR5 SO-DIMM (2x 32GB) for under 400€. That tops the +600€ to go from 16GB to 64GB on the 5770 quite a bit. Not good when there is no competition selling CAMM modules 😞
  21. My 7740 throttles with anything less than the dual cable dock. I think that is the reason for the DC or DCS recommendation. I guess we would need updated USB-C hardware in the laptop for 240W USB-C power to work. So I doubt you would be able to make use of a newer dock wth 240W over one cable on older Precision laptops. There were several posts that you get a little less performance with just the DC dock powering the laptop (its 210 instead of 240W). Not sure if that is just measurable or noticable. Might depend on the workload when CPU and GPU max out.
