I ordered with 1x16 GB ECC.
Now I'm wondering if I should add an additional 16GB module while I have it open to add SSDs.

On the support -> parts page for the 7770 it doesn't appear I can currently buy a matching 16 GB ECC SO-DIMM module from dell (only seeing non ECC modules.) What would be the matching 16 GB ECC SO-DIMM module to purchase online? Should I match brands to what dell uses?

I seem to remember that DDR5 SO-DIMM has always ECC. Everything listed here says "on-die ECC": Arbeitsspeicher (RAM) Speicher mit Typen: DDR5/SO-DIMM, Kitgröße: ab 32GB Preisvergleich Geizhals Deutschland. About €180 for 32GB kits and €330 for 64GB kits - might be the safest to exchange with two identical instead of adding one to an existing from Dell.

I am awaiting a Crucial P3 Pro 4TB - preordered for 443€. Might arrive today or tomorrow. Cant use it to its full potential on my 7740 which has only PCIe 3 slots, but will carry it over to the next laptop. I'll report back how it goes.

Edit: The initial estimate after pre-order was 19th of Juli, now arrival is estimated in two month - so it will take a while to say something about that model.

Realized the P3 Plus is QLC which I wanted to avoid for my OS drive. So I used the delay to switch to ADATA Gammix S70 Blade 4TB - fits easily and has nice numbers in my 7740 which has only PCIe 3, so the PCIe 4 drive will have to wait for the next laptop to get full specs. Current I see this:

SODIMM adapters will be available later.

From my perspective it is reasonable to purchase a configuration with the required amount of RAM, especially for such expensive devices like 7670/7770. Yep, Dell charges more for additional memory, but not so much. Kit with 2x32Gb Kingston Fury (KF548S38IBK2-64) now costs 485$ vs. 657$ for 64GB CAMM option. There're some options to save another $100-$150, but it doesn't really matter for $4-5K total device price.

Technically, it is nice to have an opportunity to install a low-latency memory like G.Skill Ripjaws DDR5-4800 CL34, but it is limited to 16GB per module. 32GB modules from Kingston or G.Skill have a higher latency (at least CL38), which is comparable to CAMM (CL40, I assume).

Just checked in germany again: going from the standard 16GB to 64 with CAMM is +850€ (so that is just the diff from 16 to 64GB, 64GB CAMM on its own must be counted even higher, close to 1000€) - after market Kingston ValueRAM SO-DIMM Kit 64GB, DDR5-4800 is around 320€ - tripled price. I guess the new 7x70 Precisions just left the price range acceptable for our purchase department - "normal" dev machines were about 2700 to 3000€ for us.

Does anyone has recommendation of 4TB SSD? Planning to get two of them for my upcoming 7770.

  5. Between my first PIN change in the office and next usage from home several hours went by. I'll try that again on monday. But I think there should have been more than 30 minutes after the PIN reset and several tried to use the finger print reader.

We switched from OpenVPN to FortiClient VPN two weaks ago. But I never needed a VPN connection to use my finger print from my home.

The IT department had no idea what the reason could be 😉

  6. Mine is a golden square in the palm rest. So maybe FIPS - but it works fast. I read that FIPS tends to be slow.

Yes the laptop is domain joined - hybrid domain with local DCs and an AzureAD.

Not using a smart card. Just thought that the finger print reader might fall into that category of security devices.

The error message I stated is not from the settings page, where you set up the finger prints. That is working. I can remove and add finger prints. Just when I (try to) use if for login, I get the error message, that this option is currently or temporarily not available.

I reset my PIN (an option I was given when login with PIN failed) again.

No I get "You credential could not be verified" for both PIN and finger print login attempts.

    Hmm...

  7. After the latest Windows Updates two days ago I cannot login with my finger print reader any more and I found this KB article:

KB5005408: Smart card authentication might cause print and scan failures (microsoft.com)

Could that be the cause, that my finger print reader is not compliant anymore?

I removed and added finger prints, no change, reset my PIN, no change.

After I scan my finger, there is a short flicker and than I always get "This option is temporarily not available. Please use a different..." (translated from german, so maybe not exactly the english wording).

I think I have the none FIPS version, but not really sure. In device manager I see "Control Vault w/ Fingerprint Touch Sensor" from broadcom.

Is there any tool to check for hardware and software compliance of the scanner and its driver? The driver shows 5.9.3.1 from 16.12.2021

I previously mentioned that you cannot have OLED 4K and WWAN (according to a sales rep.).

As WWAN is currently not selectable for any display this is either a mistake or Dell has issues with availability of the WWAN

The german site shows WWAN for one FullHD+ screen and that adds the WWAN card as well.

I need more USB-A ports (and possibly more displays) than the 7560 supports, so I am in the market for a Dell dock. I've read through the Dock compatibility guide and I am comparing between the WD22TB4 and the WD19DCS. I am most concerned about the power delivery: will I be able to charge the laptop with just the WD22TB4, and is the CPU/GPU likely to be throttled? I absolutely don't want the hassle of having two gigantic AC adaptors lying on the floor.

Furthermore, is the WD19DCS (which is recommended over the WD22TB4 for the Precision 7560) liable for an update soon? As the model name suggests, it's from 2019, and USB-C PD today supports 240 W over a single port, which makes me feel that Dell might release an updated dock with a single cable some time soon.

My 7740 throttles with anything less than the dual cable dock. I think that is the reason for the DC or DCS recommendation.

I guess we would need updated USB-C hardware in the laptop for 240W USB-C power to work. So I doubt you would be able to make use of a newer dock wth 240W over one cable on older Precision laptops.

There were several posts that you get a little less performance with just the DC dock powering the laptop (its 210 instead of 240W). Not sure if that is just measurable or noticable. Might depend on the workload when CPU and GPU max out.

I just realized my 7760 does not go in sleep mode. Indeed, the screen turns off but the rest seems to keep working as normal and the screen immediately turns on if I move the mouse for example. Also, the command powercfg -lastwake returns Wake History Count - 0. I was not able to pinpoint the issue, and I was wondering if any of you has the same issue.

Had that once on my 7740 and checked the Windows application event log to find an event that some device did not react properly to the suspend command. The name indicated the smart card reader. Restarting the smartcard service solved it for me. So maybe the eventlog has some helpful information for you as well?

are there 7760 UHD models without discrete graphics? I found such an offer on ebay, although there is no such model on the official site ..

The Precision models typically have a "build your own" offer and the 7xxx models are pretty free about your combinations. Here in germany I can choose iGPU with a 4K display.

I don't restrict what CPU's you order without a discrete GFX.  You can order any CPU without discrete GFX.  I have been allowing this for multiple generations.

Hi @Dell-Mano_G, will this become true for the Precision 5770 as well?

I would like an i7-12800h or i9-12900h combined with the iGPU, but currently the i7 auto selects the A2000 and the i9 the A3000

Sounds good for the 7xxx line.

Can you say the same about the 5xxx line?

    I am interested in a 5770 as I would prefer 17" and 16:10 over 16" 16:10 or 17,3 16:9.

With those small bezels I would even go for a 18" 16:10, which should fit my current 7740 backpack 🙂
