I got a little concerned with the power draws we are seeing here, and decided to bite the bullet and service my new Arctic Freezer to replace a faulty gasket, and try out the Thermaltake contact frame. I've got to say, I was a little sceptical.

Holy guacamole! Cores hitting ambient at idle and around 80C at 310W. Ca. 10C improvement as advertised. Reminded me of a battle to keep a laptop CPU under 100C at 60W 🙂

BTW one fan started rattling a little after a few months of rather heavy use, nice one Arctic, thanks for the extra hassle - good thing I had a spare, although it's fiddly to use a standard fan as a replacement due to the extra wires..

Well, I got a GPU upgrade for less than the Zotac 3060. I grabbed a 3060 Ti FTW3 on sale from EVGA for about $20 less than the low budget Zotac. Zotac is on its way back to Amazon for a refund. I found out after it was too late that the Zotac 3060 (maybe all of them) have a different bolt pattern around the core and nobody makes a block for it. I have a used EK block incoming for the FTW3.

Yup, a nice bump for $20 less, LOL. And, this is with it running crazy hot using a Strix vBIOS with a 65W higher power limit. I guess I am going to have to shunt mod this little scrapper after the water block gets here.

Well, I swapped out my 12900K that I bought back in April. 🙂 (Cost was 549.99+ 69.99 for 2 year warranty)

As it stands, no one is beating Microcenters in house warranty on computer parts. And Best Buy with their triple the cost warranty is "trash" and take forever to do anything when a problem arises. I walked my 12900K in store with no muss no fuss. Cashier already knew what time it was because he had a guy on 4090 launch day come back in with a complete computer setup to swap out. 😂

For the most part I'm done losing big money on aging parts. Had I bought my Kingpins through them I would be sitting on 4500 right now.

If you do like me, then you only pay upgrade cost plus new warranty. And when the next card comes out you only pay the difference. She can't get mad then. Since she already got mad last year for the initial purchase.😄

I used to do that but Denver's MC will no longer allow upgrades, it has to be broken.

Is that with your Shamancy A-Die memory though?😄

True, but if it runs long enough to let you pass benchmarks with a higher score then it just doesn't neeed to be daily driver stable. You can do daily driver mediocrity when you're not benching. (This is obviously a statement for the benefit of readers, not you, LOL.)

ah yes ive heard about that faulty gasket thingy, im glad though that they reacted so fast and sent out replacement kits for free to customers. i also jumped on the contact frame bandwagon with Thermal Grizzly, but unfortunately my lady's machine has some kinda funky non-standard screws holding the ILM in place. so gotta wait until my LTT screwdriver comes incl all the bit packages 😄 until then, the contact frame prices should have surely come down a bit.

wouldnt the fan still be under warranty? considering that they extended it to 6 years total. or does that not include the fans?

It does seems weird for sure. But, we are also talking about my "work" computer not my benching beast. And, yeah... totally economic.  For economic reasons I may be hanging it up as a matter of having priorities straight. It has never been inexpensive, but I'm just not OK with the absurd and abusive extortion-level pricing of desirable tech, and every time I say yes to overpriced stuff because I want it, I become part of the problem and a direct contributor to their criminal behavior.

I'm very tempted to get a 13900KS once they're released. I just built a new workstation and already want to swap out the CPU.🤣

All this benching I'm doing with my super 10900K is leaving me wanting more. Also, I really want a portable gaming desktop I can fit in my laptop bag. Perhaps a custom loop with inlet/outlet ports for hooking up a water chiller to it would be good.

I've gotten introduced to all sorts of awesome things these past few years such as high performance thermal paste, liquid metal, CPU delidding, a real DTR (my trusty X170), and sub-ambient cooling. I've gained so much knowledge and I'm loving it!

Custom watercooling will probably be next for me.

Yeah, I know the smart move is to just wait not only for RDNA3 results but for after Xmas when first phase sales are finished, 13900ks on the horizon (along with X3D for AMD).

I still love laptops (modern models not so much), but I have always had a desktop running in tandem at all times. Why not have the best of both worlds? 🙂

And yeah, custom water is the logical next step but I will only do soft tubing for ease of use. I'm in my cases way too much to go through the hassles of hard tubing for aesthetics.

Hummmm, and you chose the right protection plan correct? With the right SKU? And you asked what your warranty covers before even paying for it right?

Also I would state that a low quality SP rating is grounds for replacement(Meaning chip is not up to par - But this can also be found with in the normal return period though). Now no one is going to really know what that is, but that is how we "quantify" Intel chips as being keepers or losers these days. (This is of course is an example)

Funny you should mention that. I picked up a second 13900K last night from MC for the living room PC. Decided to go all out on it. SP99 on the second chip. RIP. Although I'm not sure what that will mean in terms of OC potential though so I won't go to hard on it. Out of box it draws 300w, so like 20-30w more than my SP106. Not terrible, but this chip more closely aligns with review samples of 300w defaults. I took the replacement plan on both for 2 years at $69.99, it's going back I think. If I have to, I will just claim my warranty on it. MC is usually pretty lenient with CPU replacement though.

Unfortunately they sold out of 13900K last night.

The launch samples of the 13900K’s and 13900KF’s are all looking to be great samples.  I think the worst I’ve seen so far is an SP98 on the P cores. Another thing is, they all seem to be relatively close on SP rating. I’ll never know what mine is lol. The struggles of not having an Asus motherboard.

I don’t know my 11900K’s SP rating to this day. And it’s a freak of nature. 😄

Ugh.....I'm going to have to pick up an Asus board to find out what this chip is.

If you are within your 15 day return period which I'm 100% you are, then they will take it back without wasting your warranty. Just wait until next week when I'm guessing they will have more. maybe even get some on Saturday.

I am still planning to try to fix the 2080 Ti FTW3. That GPU has been too wonerful to throw away. I just haven't had time to do it.

The 3060 Ti never would have been purchased otherwise, and I chose it because (a) it was the cheapest half-decent option available, and (b) Intel's Arc A770 wasn't available. That A770 would have been my first choice for a low cost GPU, and the performance is very similar to the 3060. This purchase was based on business need as it involved the computer I use for work and I use my triple-monitor setup to the point of being crippled without it. I could only use two with the Intel iGFX and using a USB Type C docking station did not support the third monitor. My original plan was to spend nothing and just use the iGPU until I figured out whether or not I could repair the 2080 Ti, but that did not work out.

Overclocking doesn't require the newest or most expensive hardware to be fun. Wanting the lastest and greatest is a first-world hangup for me and most of the people I know and like the most, LOL. Even if I hated the 3060 Ti and viewed it as a piece of garbage I would still overclock it and push it to the edge of functionality, just because I like doing that. Even BGA trash that can be overclocked is fun to play with to some degree. It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye.

I have always been interested in waterblocking a midrange GPU. When Jayz2cents did a video on a AMD RX480 and then watercooled it back in 2016, it was the most amazing thing I’d ever seen in my life with watercooling. He went from 200+ watts to like 98+ watts of power draw. I had a RX480 back then too. I got it on launch day. Then I got a GTX1080 on launch and it blew it out of the water. Lol.  But either way. It has always been interesting to me watercooling a mid range GPU product.

I’m very interested in your results once you watercool that 3060Ti.

Anyone have a Rockitcool 12900K delid tool I can borrow? They are all sold out on their website. And they only show “Pre-Order” for some reason. I want to delid this 13900KF as soon as possible. I can’t afford to bin for a good one lol. So whatever the SP rating, I’ve got what I’ve got. “I’ll never know the SP btw” DAMN YOU ASUS! 😂

Rockitcool is scalping FLITZ polish BTW!!!

Still not as worse as Newegg. You get at least what you pay for.

Whats wrong with Newegg? How is this even possible? And when will people stop use them?

Hummmm, and you chose the right protection plan correct? With the right SKU? And you asked what your warranty covers before even paying for it right?

Also I would state that a low quality SP rating is grounds for replacement(Meaning chip is not up to par - But this can also be found with in the normal return period though). Now no one is going to really know what that is, but that is how we "quantify" Intel chips as being keepers or losers these days. (This is of course is an example)

Yes, as of about 2 years ago, my MC wised up and no longer accepts returns so you can upgrade.  It was a great deal upgrading for the price of the warranty.  I guess I could do the accidental warranty and smash it with a hammer, lol.

Yeah, they are not going for the smash it with a hammer like Intel's Tuning plan when it was operational.  😂

Not saying it didn't happen, but damn! That foam is damn near in perfect shape for being tossed around during shipping. And no one heard it rattling either? That would be the first person fired. That person that grabbed this off the shelf, unless of course this was sold through a private citizen using newegg.

Yeah, it makes a huge difference, especially since Turing and Ampere have uncontrollable adverse behavior affected by temperature long before the GPUs actually get "hot" and need to throttle.  This air cooled GPU is the only desktop GPU I have owned other than a 780 Ti and it is getting seriously hot when overclocked. I hate air cooling, LOL. It sucks.

Here is another before and after comparison showing what a huge gap exists between 3060 and 3060 Ti... whodathunkit? That a huge leap between the two.

Do we already know that 13900K is exactly the same under the IHS, with no hidden surprises lurking there? I have not seen a delid video yet that shows us that a 12900K delid tool is safe. I have one you can borrow if you need to. I know it looks the same on the outside, but there could be some SMDs or other landmines. Unless I missed it, Roman hasn't popped the top on one yet.

That is an indication of an issue with a NewEgg employee(s) or crime somewhere else in the supply chain. Hard to know where, but probably someone that works there is stealing or people in charge of returns are not doing their job. Don't forget about the CPU that I bought from B&H photo that someone returned that was an older CPU with a new CPU IHS on it. I bought it as new, not open box. That doesn't mean B&H tried to pull a fast one on me, but it does say something about the QC and management. Good help is hard to find. I am not excusing it at all. It is inexcusable. I am only saying it is not necessarily an indication that NewEgg is a dishonest company that has a goal of defrauding customers as much as mismanaged or hiring sketchy employees that belong in jail or 6-feet under instead of working at NewEgg. If it is an employee problem, they do not deserve a job and the only real solution for that kind of problem is euthanasia. People that do things like that are sick puppies that do not deserve a place in our world, and do not deserve free (taxpayer paid) room and board in prison.

People will stop using them when they have another option. I used to have a Fry's here. Not as good as Microcenter, but better than Best Buy. For a few things (not much) Best Buy is OK. They're not awesome and they don't sell 95% of what I want to buy. So, my options are NewEgg, Amazon, or pay more than something is worth somewhere else that also has a terrible returns policy and charges a lot for slow shipping. If I stop using NewEgg, that leaves me without an option in some cases. Their prices are often better than Amazon.

Hey. Both 12900K and 13900K are identical. Only one extra area needs some conformal coating. Delid is the same.

@Talon

Is it worth buying the TEAM group 7200 A-die sticks? I think you have some right, how do they overclock? They are back in-stock. I’m tempted here lol.  they did bump the price to $399.99 unfortunately though.. I only have some Vengeance 6000C36 sticks Samsung B-Die, and I feel like being on a Unify-X (2) Dimm motherboard with my 13900KF needs more than that.

How do you know this? Is there a video somewhere I missed? I haven't looked for a couple of weeks, but last time I checked there was no verifiable info that I could find.

Depends on what you are wanting to accomplish. In almost everything the performance using that memory kit overclocked to 6400 produced results that were roughly identical and indiscernably different than SK Hynix running 6800. AIDA64 benchmarks were better, but it was difficult to quantify improvement in most things. That said, going from 6400 to 7400 should provide a benefit. It will still be somewhat dependent on what you are doing whether it will be measurable or meaningful.

Paying $400 for two 8GB memory sticks is pretty horrible. I bet you will be able to buy A-die for about half that much in 6 to 8 months. All of the early adopters are clamoring to get their hands on it and it is rare right now. It will probably soon become common and inexpensive, just as we saw with M-die. It started out rare and expensive too, 6 or 8 months ago.

Well, you know me I want to accomplish top tier performance with overclocking. It is 2x16GB 7200C34 kit. $399.99 isn’t too bad. Much cheaper than corsairs slower 6600 M-Die. I guess I just want some good numbers and something fun to play around with. I think this is the kit.

Also, Rockitcool said 12th Gen delid tool works on 13th. They changed their description too. A few people have already delidded their own 13900K. It is the same from what I have gathered.
