I've decided to send the G.SKILL A-die back for a refund. The more I have played with it, I am discovering it is inferior to the generic green M-die sticks I already own. It's less stable, more prone to errors and runs hotter. Plus, the RGB rainbow puke keeps returning and my white color choice doesn't get saved. If I set the sticks to white and shut down the rainbox puke returns unless I boot into the same OS and allow RGB control software to override the default puke. If I boot into any other OS, the rainbow puke is what I get to look at.

I've tested it on the Strix and the Dark motherboards and it's buggy on both platforms. On the Dark with the latest 2.05 BIOS I can run the G.SKILL XMP 7200 profile on my M-die without complications. The read/write/copy and latency are all better using the M-die at the same clock speed. Without lowering clock speed, I can run tighter timings that are stable on the M-die, but they're not even bootable with the A-die.

The G.SKILL A-die appears to be a low quality silicon variant like the Corsair Vengeance A-die that I returned. The JEDEC default speed is 4800 on both of them, rather than 5600, and they both seem like compromised garbage products.

I have ordered a pair of generic green Hynix A-die with a default 5600 clock from China on Aliexpress for $100 less than the defective RGB puke options. This appears to be exactly the same product Splave sells on HWBOT.

QKQSCxZ.jpg

Makes sense since you're going to just throw your own heatsink solution on them anyhow. The price and RGB aren't worth it.

Glad to see you testing, pushing and binning various sticks out there to separate the wheat from the chaff for clarity.

Hi. Have the card boxed down for shipping. And reflashed org vbios back. But here’s an score from before. See link. The ECC junk destroy the fun. Not sure if I want a new. And the 3090 is still damn expensive and works on Win 7. And I use this OS a lot. Maybe I’ll sit on the fence now see how the prices will be for newer cards. But one thing for sure. It won’t be AMD.

They are really nice-looking and seem like a quality product on the surface. In fact, I was thinking I might keep them for the Strix system, but the instability I encountered on the Dark when I tried to tighten up sloppy timings was mirrored on the ASUS mobo. Then I discovered my M-die ran better than the A-die. I did not reset the memory settings before swapping out the modules and lo-and-behold, the Dark booted right up with the G.SKILL A-die settings that were throwing errors and ran them without errors. I was like, WUUUUTTT??? Then, the RGB puke not staying turned off on top of that, and I am like...

On any driver that does not have voltage control:

Add this line at the bottom of the [startup] in the profile folder/profile for the card you are running. Make sure voltage has been unlocked using the msi settings page. restart msi afterburner and you should have voltage control

[settings]

vddc_generic_detection=1

PS:

Make use to take control of the file or it wont let you save the changes.

Didn't work. Did a DDU cleanup and installed latest driver from 400 series. Bang, and voltage adjustment sticks. I haven't tried the first driver versions from 500 series. Will do when I have the time. I hate disgusting! For the records... Tested also Zotac's own OC software. The setting sticks when I apply. But when I run the render test the voltag is default. Yep, disgusting. Maybe a bug, but how long will Nvidia continue with their screw up? Until people gor feed up and buy their new overpriced 4080 Scam?

Yep. 3 option in the folder. And only one file contain the info string you showed. Have edited this file before. I have a EVGA graphics card that is fully locked. I found it out afterwards that EVGA really screwed up. They used a voltage controller that is fully locked. Disgusting, isn't it? I think MSI offered a card in same series with an contoller you could change voltage with an custom vbios. Evga, nope. And same for some other brands.

Option 3 in the folder...Now i'm a bit lost, but if you say you tried it and it failed then I'm going to go with that. That is interesting though. That is like a fail safe for pretty much all Nvidia cards that do not have voltage control.

As far as benching goes, you do not need the latest driver for anything below 4090's so pick any old driver and run with it. 457.30 or .57 was a great driver for older Nvidia cards.

There is 3 files in the folder. Only one contain all settings. And yep, I don't see the need for newer drivers on older cards. They are usualluy worse for benching. But, I prefer that they don't make this ugly move. Either intended or a bug. But this is not acceptable. I have paid for the card. And Zotac have offered OC software you can change the most. Why mess up what have worked before?

Imagine they do the same for 3090 or 4090 once  the cards got bit older? And 980 Ti was the previous flagship. This can happen again. And Nvidia have been  there with lapotop graphics. Nothing is holy for the green idiots.

Edit. Unlike the NVIDIA reference design, EVGA uses a Richtek RT8802A voltage controller on their card. It is functionally very similar to the controller on the reference design--both do not offer I2C voltage control or advanced monitoring and are cost-effective solutions

Evga went cheapo for some of their cards. Voltage capped at 1.2V. I should instead went for a MSI Hawk. (if I remember correct, I mean KEPLER cards had voltage limit at 1.306v). And cap max fan speed at 90% is also a stupid move from EVGA. A few brand did also that for the hot running GTX480/580. Better that the cards boil at max allowed temps than offer full fan speed.

There is 3 files in the folder.

There is going to be a separate file for each GPU/HWID that has been installed in your system, and if you flash a different vBIOS from a GPU with a different HWID that will also create a new file that has to be modded. If you save your settings to one of the profiles, that will also create a new file for each saved profile. The one that applies to your current GPU has its HWID in the file name.

As many video cards as you have played with I am shocked there are not more than three files unless this is a clean Windoze installation.

I did a ful cleanup of MSI afterburner when I saw the voltage slider was greyed up when I used 4090 first time. Then installed the beta version that should open up for the latest and greatest from Nvidia.

I'd buy a Papusan John ksss or Mr fox 4090. This might be a small forum but you guys are giants in the room. Some of the best overclockers that need sponsorship... what do you think.. are you guys down to get sponsored or is that off in the distance

I wouldn’t mind that😊 But the only drawback would be being put in same league with Elite benchers on LN2.

After all of these years, you'd think that Jay would know a little more about overclocking reference cards. It is obvious that reference cards are extremely powerlimited and while the results are novel (instead of crashing, the card steals power from the VRAM when overclocking the core), he didn't have the same issues with the PowerColor Red Devil AIB card. However, if you read the title of the video, you'd think it affects all AMD XTX cards.

There are some issues with the XTX that AMD NEEDS to correct via drivers and I am going to remain on the sideline until they solved, but I can't help but think that all of this crap is because people wanted the 7900 XTX to beat the 4090 at $600 less. I blame AMD for their announcement bullcrap and the tech media.

Question for the guys that do a lot of SM soldering. What microscope do you guys recommend? I am looking at two (appear to be made at the same factory), Vision Scientific VS-5FZ-IFR07 Simul-Focal Trinocular Zoom and the AmScope - SM-4NTP 7X-45X Simul-Focal.

If you guys have other suggestions, please let me know. I am not a beginner in soldering. I have lots of experience but I usually just use my eyes or a magnifying glass.

Jay can be a bit (a lot) sensationalist in his thumbnails and sometimes even in his content in pockets. Just preface it with, "3 power lead versions are ideal for valid overclocking" or a thumbnail with, "3x lead AMD cards are monster OCers!"

AMD left the impression the CU / Shaders were going to be more than doubled and when numerous outlets reported it as such they never, ever not even once stepped forward and corrected them. It wasn't till benchmarks and screenshots started to show up right before reviews we realized the 7900xtx was much less than advertised.

It took them forever to finally say it was a 4080 competitor which contradicted a lot of their presentation benchmarks which with basic extrapolation put it closer to the 4090.

I still think it is a very solid card and has great potential but the results are so all over the map in benchmarks that it has to be a new architecture / driver issue and a lack of maturity. When you have some games barely performing above the 6950xt and losing clearly to the 4080 and others beating the 4080 convincingly and nipping at the 4090's heels that variance is puzzling and troubling. AMD fooled me yet again with their presentation and lack of clarity or correction when simulated benchmarks and fps started to appear.

I am not shocked after the 7900xtx launch 4080 sales picked up immediately. Everyone who was waiting to see what AMD had to offer produced a portion of that crowd that decided the 4080 was the better value even at +$200.

I'm holding off till Feb 2023. I mean if I see a Suprim X 4090 at MSRP I might break and buy it because I'm only human and the "final" release of WoW DF is putting a beating on my 3080 badly in many spots as I progress at 5120x1440 @144hz. Even the 3090ti wouldn't have resolved these sub 60 dips. I know a 4090 will have it purring along at 120+ w/ RT on and RT on/off is much more noticeable in Dragonflight than Shadowlands. It is meaningful now so I keep it on.
