Might be the board itself? Check to see what else everyone is achieving on 2022 Apex boards >5.8ghz. If they are doing good, time for an RMA. If not then sell it off. How is the memory OC on it versus your Unify?

It’s definitely the motherboard. It errors out in the Aida 64 memory test. Which is a fairly weak memory stability test already 🤦‍♂️

Even just XMP 7200 ultra loose timings low tREFI. I even bumped all supporting memory voltages IMC/VDDQ TX/ SA by a good unrealistic amount that would even be needed. It’s gonna be a no go on this one.

I feel like this is not a 2022 Apex, and some one got me. Because if it was it would run 7800+ easily. Some can even do 8200-8800 performing equally as good as their Z790 Apex bigger brothers. (Luck of the board lottery of course if hitting 8000+ DDR5)

The MSI Unify-X Z690 is kicking this thing straight in the pants!

Ouch, well I guess you know why it was so cheap. Double check the serial and warranty info with Asus for confirmation. If it is a 2021 return it to the buyer. If it is a 2022, it is just you finally getting a taste of the silicon bad luck we all seem to hit with most CPUs off the shelf. 😞 I wouldn't wish that on anybody.

If the traces were sound but the OC was lacking, I would have taken it off your hands but if it is borking out at 7200, that is a hard pass.

Seriously though, do a warranty check with Asus to confirm the production year and then figure out what to do next.

It doesn’t have any sort of S/N stickers on the board it’s self. The seller just said “The box is 2021, but the board is a 2022 replacement they sent me” no S/N stickers anywhere on the actual board though.

@tps3443the decal on the back looks like the SN. The numbering syntax follows the same pattern as the ASUS mobos registered under my name that I no longer own. The "SN" prefix is also kind of a give-away.

image.png.04c632be2e208d34474122f010f50ed0.png

Examples from my account... none of which I still own. The Strix was solid, but the other three were trash.

image.png.382641374790458a147e8ea37bfa4b88.png

This bears repeating/re-reading... especially the last two paragraphs.

Yeah, I am really sorry to hear that. When you get a good ASUS product they are truly amazing. When you get one that is not, they are garbage. That is why I try to avoid the brand... total crapshoot. It's really unfortunate because they were once the best. Now they are only the best sometimes... randomly. QC lottery is worse than the silicon lottery. I suspect you know now why you got a good deal on it. Someone lost in the ASUS QC lottery and you inherited their abortion. Makes me feel sick for you, bro. I am well acquainted with drawing short straws on flagship ASUS motherboards that turn out to be trash. It is unfortunate that their less expensive models are more reliable. Prime and Strix are generally consistent, but not great for any kind of hardcore overclocking.

If you can convince ASUS that it needs to be replaced  (and that is iffy) you might have a good replacement in 4 to 8 weeks. Good luck convincing them it's not trash. Be sure to take very high resolution photos of the CPU socket and everything else or they'll find something obscure to void the warranty and make it your fault, even going as far as sending you pictures of someone else's bent CPU socket pins. They are extremely dishonest.

I have even heard that having thermal paste on the motherboard has been used as an excuse to deny warranty, and it fits with the lousy experiences I have had dealing with the imbeciles in their tech support department.

Walmart computers are often the stuff that people that have a smidgen of tech knowledge won't buy from a place that noobs normally shop, like Best Buy. I think that is how they end up with the products and sell them cheap. They are the masters of selling inexpensive products to impulsive buyers that don't know much about what they are buying.

That is not to say everything they sell is junk, or that people that shop there  are all stupid. To the contrary. I shop there all the time and they do sell good products. I like them as a company for the most part. They are just really good at selling garbage to people that don't know better and grab things just because they are cheap... that's all I am saying. They have an excellent return policy, so I'm OK with that. They've never given me any crap about returning anything... ever. I love and respect that.

I’m trying so hard to make this Z690 Apex work for me… And I just can’t find the reason. I cannot stabilize anything with it! Power usage at 6Ghz and temps to even get through R23 are absolutely stupid. I don’t get it.. I can barely manage 5.9-6.0Ghz stability on this thing, and it can’t even run games stable.

I spend all of my hours of the day inside the bios tuning around my tail and back again. Then I’m still on the same unstable system haha! The board is beautiful! And It also has really nice features. But I’m done with it.

Sorry to hear. Now we know the reason for the attractive  price... Was that advertised as a 2022 variant?

@Mr. FoxI have yet to contact MSI about the bent pins on the 2021 board (thanks Amazon for selling me that in July 2022 BTW).  I hope they are not as bad as Asus, but clearly there is no warranty claim to be made. I do wonder though if they would fix it for a reasonable price, or whether it's a waste of time altogether.

They may  fix it for a reasonable price. I think ASUS charges like $75 or $100 USD when they deny warranty for that reason. I think @johnkssshas paid them something like that before. MSI is probably the same if they have the ability.

Asus replacements do not come with S/N stickers. The reason why I know this is due to all of the replacements I had to get for my Asus boards over the years. Asus sends you an e-mail with the replacement's S/N. Ask the seller for the S/N they've received via e-mail. If you toss away that e-mail, you are SOL.

Nice. My MSI boards have this imprinted. Both S/N and rev number indicative of the year of manufacture.

Good news is. I have filed a warranty claim for the Asus Z690 Apex. The S/N was right on the back of the motherboard. This is definitely a 2021 model from the looks of it.

I’m wondering will the replacement be better? Is Asus even going to say this is a problem? Hopefully they don’t throw in some slow DDR5 6000 c36 and test it.

This seems like its a real problem to me. My Unify-X will do so much better than this thing.

EDIT: Board just failed at DDR5 7000 lol. My goodness.

The last 3 high-end Asus motherboards I have purchased failed and were replaced by an EVGA motherboard that never failed. The replacements sent to me by Asus weeks later were sold on eBay without ever being installed or tested.

The last 3 budget/mid-range motherboards have been rock solid and haven't missed a beat (Prime and Strix models). They are not the best at overclocking, but have been reliable.

Pay more, get less. What's wrong with this picture? It seems like they only care about getting things right on the products that they sell the most of, not the products that they charge the most for. That fits my scenario, and it sounds like it mirrors what Brother @Rage Sethas experienced with his TR mobos.

I feel like I’d be better off getting the Z690 Apex on hwbot which does DDR5 8200+ for $300 it’s missing all of the covers and heat sinks and accessories. Which I have a perfect donor for all of that 🙂

Assuming you don't get a defective one, overclocking excellence is the drawing card for this model. It is the Asus competitor to the Dark offered by EVGA and the Unify-X from MSI. 4-DIMM motherboards universally suck at memory overclocking, but these are the Titans that represent the trifecta of the XOC enthusiast motherboards. Simply put, you can't do better with anything else other than one of these three options. Results trump features in this arena.

I feel like I’d be better off getting the Z690 Apex on hwbot which does DDR5 8200+ for $300 it’s missing all of the covers and heat sinks and accessories. Which I have a perfect donor for all of that 🙂

I love that solution. If Asus leaves you holding the bag on the defective one that was pawned off on you, squeeze that lemon and enjoy the lemonade.

It is truly idiotic that the guy on HWBOT sells the heatsinks for the value of copper. He should not have a surprised look on his face that nobody (so far) wants to buy his butchered piece of crap leftover motherboard, but in this case it could work in your favor with the donor on hand.

The question is, did Asus physically change anything between the 2021 and 2022 models? Asus won't come out and say they changed some things but you never know.

It's like the Asus Zenith II Extreme and Zenith II Extreme Alpha. Asus claims the boards are identical outside of adding improved, VRM's but they also changed the VRM heatsink slightly.

Cool. You certainly don't see that much on laptops any more. Is that with the stock Lenovo firmware, or a BIOS mod?
