@Mr. Fox That video I linked to is not what you're thinking of. The links to the cases I put in my previous post are cases for fully customizable builds, no proprietary parts except the screen, keyboard, and trackpad.

You must be thinking of this: https://videocardz.com/newz/chinese-company-preparing-workstation-laptop-with-64-core-epyc-7713-cpu-desktop-rtx-4080-graphics-and-built-in-liquid-cooling

That new Rev-9 laptop that comes out in 2 days looks super awesome. I don't know if they use a proprietary motherboard. Hopefully not, but at the very least they use an actual desktop GPU, so that will be upgradeable.

Yes, that is exactly what I was referring to. 👍 I just kind of gave it quick glance and moved on because the AMD CPU and compromised form factor were both conditions that made it a product of no interest to me. It looks like the one in LTT's video can use a standard production motherboard. I don't think it is going to be pleasant to cool, but it certainly shouldn't be any worse than the pathetic turdbooks the world has embraced in such a disgusting manner.

Edit: I just watched the LTT video. Looks like it has a poor quality screen, low quality keyboard and touchpad and the chassis gets extremely hot (flesh-burning hot).

After looking again at the dimensions of the first case I posted (that Linus uses in his video), I'm pretty sure it can fit an ATX motherboard as long as you use a dual slot graphics card. The dimensions of the case are larger than an ATX motherboard, suggesting that one would fit. I'd really like a version with an 18 inch high refresh rate screen though. That would be perfect for me.

We'll wait and see what awesome new toys are in store for us in the coming weeks and months. More parts keep popping up that make it more convenient to go through with my dream custom laptop build. I am greatly looking forward to that day I finish said build. I fully expect the upfront cost to be prohibitive, but it'll be cheaper for me in the long run vs buying modern laptops (which suck anyways, so I want nothing to do with them anymore).

The PSU manufacturers prepare for more gamers cards going into AI servers. And Nvidia is in a hurry to ship loads of new AD102 based gamer server cards to the Chinese gamers people....

FSP preparing 2500W power supply with four PCIe 12V-2×6 GPU power cables

FSP is at the forefront of providing power solutions for a diverse range of applications, whether it’s fueling a cryptofarms, a multi-user gaming rig, or an advanced AI compute platform. The upcoming Cannon Pro 2500W power supply, set to launch soon, is to feature 80 Plus Platinum certification, ATX 3.1 standard specs, and an upgraded PCIe Gen5 connector.

The Cannon Pro stands out with three PCIe 6+2-pin and four PCIe 12V-2×6 connectors, allowing for the simultaneous use of up to four RTX 4090 cards, or even five with the remaining standard PCIe cables.

I wonder how many AD102 dies Nvidia stole from the Global gamers to support China with new gamer server cards...

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090D reportedly launches on December 28th in China

Not in 2024, but already this year, gamers in China governments corporations will again have access to RTX 4090 graphics, sort of. The new model called RTX 4090D is a special edition designed to circumvent the U.S. export restrictions on high-performance GPUs that meet the 4800 TOPS threshold.

Hmmm. Will these cards also be pushed into AI servers? And can we be sure Nvidia didn't hided a open door for more perfomance as they did with the 'LHR' video cards (Little Hash Rate) to boost sales of gamer cards for mining?

Do you trust Nvidia @Mr. Fox @electrosoft?

Hmmm. What shall you with yet another Jokebook bro ryan? Are you an collector? I usually get my (old) laptops for my collection... I mean my Jokebooks for free. I don't want to pay for them. Paying above 200$ for a new one... No thanks. Even 100$ is all too much. But I don't say no thanks if they are for free... Free has to be todays word🙂

You  can have a lot fun with older HW. Just start build an new cheap PC. Much more fun than expensive Jokebooks....  And you don't need to emptying your wallet

I've seen some of those displays and they look absolutely gorgeous. It's really a shame that the laptops that are equipped with them are garbage, but my goodness the screens look amazing! I would like an OLED screen for my custom laptop build, but all portable OLED screens are currently very expensive. Perhaps they will have dropped in price by quite a bit once I actually get around to starting the build.

I guess they have to have a few lame excuses to get people to buy turdbooks. It sure as hell isn't because they are respectable products. And, excuses taken from the Alienware Owner's playbook are now "open source" and can be freely used by all...

...yeah, but the screen is sooo gooood

...yeah, but the keyboard is just amazing

...yeah, but the build quality is spectacular

Like my daddy used to say, "Son, an excuse is just a reason surrounded by a pack of lies."

haha @electrosoft no im not collecting them but now I have 4 laptops and 1 tablet, i think im covered for youtube haha. I will resist buying a desktop but I already know its going to happen, next purchase is likely a desktop with a 3060ti and then in a few months a 4090 if I can even find one. I would take back the laptops if I could but it was an impulsive purchase, I need to stop spending like leaves falling in the autumn, I really want a oled monitor like what @tps3443 has and a decent desktop but I usually have like 900 left and a desktop for 900 isnt possible with a 3060ti here in canada! or is it?

You might find a sweet deal at a local pawn shop, if not Craigslist or FB Marketplace. You could also sell 3 of the laptops (keep the one you like most) to offset the cost.

Excellent review, Brother @Rage Set. Thorough analysis and very professional presentation. It was easy to read and enjoyed it.

Nice, so a slim chance to see 14900KS pop out over New Year if Intel have binned properly. Yup, there is headroom for 6.2GHz chips if Intel push out KS's looking like that one.

You mean Canadian dollars? If so maybe save up to the $900 USD floor and I'm sure you'll find something. You can then sell one of the laptops and grab back some of the lost money you spent on the new Jokebook 🙂

haha @Papusan @Mr. Fox im trying, I bought the oled laptop as my main driver and can't even sell my omen for 1000. no one wants it, I guess I could try ebay people pay insane prices for 3tb and 64gb of ram but im not interested in shisting anyone. just want a decent amount or there's no point. I was in a car accident and might be getting some money from that but who knows how long that will take, i might have to wait 2-3 weeks for the vehicle compensation but the slight injuries could take years, see a liar on the 3rd

Sorry to hear you were in an accident.  I'm glad to hear that you had nothing significant result from it and I hope your life returns to normal swiftly.

It was my understanding the Omen is a pretty popular laptop among those who like gaming laptops. B0B of All Trades had a pretty big audience that was freakishly fond of them and zTecpc sells them like hotcakes. But I have found that younger tech enthusiasts are often kind of a goofy group. They're happy to overpay for something brand new if they can put it on a  high-interest credit card and make monthly installment payments for a long time, but if they have to pay cash for something used, but like new condition, they expect an opportunity to rip off the seller for pennies on the dollar or they don't want it. If a person who realizes the value of the large storage drive and memory capacity wants it, it shouldn't be too hard to sell. The trick is getting a smart person that recognizes a good value to see it versus of a bunch of people wanting something for nothing. I have had better luck selling things in forums like this one and overclock.net than I have had with eBay.

yeah like its worth 800usd with 1 tb and 16 gb. bump that up to 3tb and 64gb ram and mint condition and i don't even get 1 view. i think i could sell it for 400cad but why, i cant get anything close for 400. ah well I was hoping to save up some money ill see what happens with the lawyer. could be good, ill likely take a settlement over a proceeding. yeah it shook me pretty violently never been in a crash, i was dis-orientated and hurt because of someones poor judgement. when I get a replacement vehicle i'll be alot more of a defensive driver moving forwards, 60-0 sucks. thanks for the kind words.

on a happy note its out of stock but it looks like best buy is selling a 3060ti desktop for around 1000 just have to wait for stock. i'd be pretty excited to get a desktop.

found this for 1300

its not too shabby as a first gaming desktop. I would slowly upgrade the parts. gpu first then cpu ect.

@Mr. Fox or anyone else have any recommendations on some cheap 48GB DDR5 sticks (preferably without the heat spreaders) for a new backup server?  My mediasmart backup server just bit the dust so I'm going to build an ITX LGA 1700 system.

its not too shabby as a first gaming desktop. I would slowly upgrade the parts. gpu first then cpu ect.

I would strongly urge you to not buy a Dell, Alienware or HP desktop. If you watch any of the GamersNexus or Greg Salazar videos you will see they are dead-end garbage. While they are better than a turdbook, the case, motherboard and power supply is generally a proprietary form factor and upgrades range from difficult to impossible because nothing or most of what you would buy simply will not fit. Wiring connectors are not standard, parts are oddball shapes and sizes, and screw holes do not line up. Even something as simple as a GPU upgrade can be difficult or impossible due to internal case design space restrictions and missing power connections. You are generally extremely limited. These severe limitations are deliberate on the part of the OEM.

You would be better off buying a used older custom build in a full tower case and upgrading that over time as you find good deals. You can likely find a decent buy locally on FB Marketplace or Craigslist, or a local pawnshop. Even something old and slow, and very cheap, will be able to accommodate upgrades if it is not a big name consumer pre-built turdbox.

@Mr. Fox or anyone else have any recommendations on some cheap 48GB DDR5 sticks (preferably without the heat spreaders) for a new backup server?  My mediasmart backup server just bit the dust so I'm going to build an ITX LGA 1700 system.

If you don't plan to do any crazy overclocking the TeamGroup Elite kits are pretty cheap, do not have RGB crap and heatsinks are easy to remove if you soak them in paint thinner for 30 minutes or so. That will dissolve the adhesives without doing any damage to the memory modules. I have not seen any naked 24GB modules for sale.

yeah like its worth 800usd with 1 tb and 16 gb. bump that up to 3tb and 64gb ram and mint condition and i don't even get 1 view. i think i could sell it for 400cad but why, i cant get anything close for 400. ah well I was hoping to save up some money ill see what happens with the lawyer. could be good, ill likely take a settlement over a proceeding. yeah it shook me pretty violently never been in a crash, i was dis-orientated and hurt because of someones poor judgement. when I get a replacement vehicle i'll be alot more of a defensive driver moving forwards, 60-0 sucks. thanks for the kind words.

on a happy note its out of stock but it looks like best buy is selling a 3060ti desktop for around 1000 just have to wait for stock. i'd be pretty excited to get a desktop.

found this for 1300

Do not buy a pre built.....

For that amount, go to https://pcpartpicker.com/

Then you can hand select every component you want to design the system you want.

THEN check the various hardware forums and ebay to get the parts used (or close enough).

You can then take your time and pick up pieces as they go on sale or pop up used and slowly amass your parts to finally build out a good system with off the shelf parts.

This is the process I use when I have several builds in motion over days/weeks/months. I just slowly snag good priced deals (IE picked up a 3060ti for $155 last week and an EVGA 750w today for $60) and add them to my ever dynamically expanding/contracting hardware shelf.

You just have to get the ball rolling and be on the lookout. It also stops you from having to build up a large chunk of change to buy a system all at once and just piecemeal it with small chunks of change.

Cancer!!!! Never ever touch that brand.

See for yourself... Have you seen similar before? Probably, because proprietary MB is the normal in laptops. But in desktops? Nope.

This is how a MB should looks like if they followed the ATX form factor. But Dell and a few others walk their own way with proprietary design. And not only for the board...

I fix it for you bro Fox. They are equal Cancer!!! Use of socket CPU, desktop memory sticks and desktop GPU doesn't justify what Dell did with the whole PC package. Proprietary MB, PSU, cooling, bling bling and the PC box is just disgusting. And I won't talk about the very limited and fully locked down bios. That has to be for another day.

@ryan you can also go for a Intel GPU like 770, i think they are cheaper as 3060ti and in the same ballroom or even better now with the new drivers, @Mr. Fox is happy with his Intel GPU.

Absolutely. In fact, before I purchased the A770 I was wanting to purchase another 4090. I wouldn't mind having one, but the price makes we want to puke. I am so satisfied with the A770 that I have not even turned on my desktop with the 4090 in more than a week. I have done a bit of gaming and since my work desktop was already turned on I played on it instead and honestly don't feel like I missed out on anything.

Another random question for the group. I'm not even sure this is possible anymore, but can you still modify and flash a bios to newer Asus intel platforms?

Here's a summary of my issue.
I purchased an intel 13900T QS for my new server build but it won't post in my Pro WS W680-ACE. It will post fine in my Asus Z690-i with bios 2403. I have tried flashing the older versions of the W680 bios but it still doesn't post. The board is good because it posts with my 13700k. I'd love to be able to get the cpu microcode from the z690 bios and create a modified w680 bios. The goal was to have a low power server with the 13900t.

I do not think that you can do it directly. You might be able to do it if you do the recovery flash procedure if the file is renamed correctly. Or, you might be able to get someone to mod it for you.
