I am not disagreeing and find it objectionable to be denied the ability to do whatever I want to. But, the example of the one-off weird things that happened with Clevo and Alienware laptops does not seem to be what the people complaining are complaining about. The way I read it they were bent out of shape that MSI was not going to release firmware updates. I will go back and read it again in case I skimmed too much and they actually had a legitimate reason of some kind to worked up over it.

My point was, and still is, if the monitor works correctly I don't care if MSI, LG, Sony, Dell, AOC or any other monitor manufacturer ever releases a firmware update for it even once. I would not look for a firmware update and if I became aware of one I would not flash it if my monitor was working correctly.

Edit: Yeah, they expect MSI to release firmware UPDATES for the monitors. That's just stupid. That's a problem that isn't a problem. They just want something to mitch and boan about. Nothing is mentioned about being unable to re-flash the original firmware, only that MSI is not offering any "updates" or "limited" updates, LOL.

MSI does not need to provide a mechanism for consumers to flash monitor firmware that doesn't belong on their monitors. Not providing an easy or convenient way for it to be done is not the same as interfering with it. Interfering or blocking it is evil. They're not doing that based on the article. The only reasons we were able to fix our Clevo and Alienware monitors was through unorthodox means. It wasn't because Clevo and Alienware were trying to prevent it, it was because they didn't have a fix for it.

image.png

Honestly, monitors just aren't the same basic plug n play anymore. Features are constantly being added to hardware and it seems to be changing at a rapid pace at times. New GPUs and consoles can come out and cause issues or not able to support resolutions/refresh rates without an update. Most modern monitors support firmware updates and I've regularly had updates for my LG monitors. I just recently got a brand new MINI LED 4K HDR1000 27GR95UM from LG that came out of box with horrible issues in HDR mode. The monitor exhibited weird pre/delayed bloom and some flicker as scenes transitioned. I will agree it should have never shipped in this state, but LG provided a firmware update within a couple weeks of launch and now it's perfect.

Other times it's been small menu bugs, or features/options they did not think of to include. Dell has been rapidly updating their new Alienware 4K OLED version, fixing issues with HDMI and now soon to provide an OSD option to allow for Dolby Vision to be toggled On/Off instead of being on 100%. Asus is doing a post launch Dolby Vision update. And sometimes things just slip through or are discovered by 10000s of consumers who test far more variables than possible at the factory. Having the ability to fix those issues post launch is critical IMO.

So personally for me, segmenting a products by allowing one to firmware updates and the $50 cheaper version to not is a shit move and super anti consumer.

In the old days they focused on overclocking.... Nowadays they focus on fancy RGB and the design. Look on the GPU packages for new modern cards. Oc'ing is almost not mentioned.

I really love the design on the older flagship cards from Evga, Msi and Galax. Asus is boring.

I have been thinking about doing a Retro build. Using older parts but high end parts. I think it would be awesome.

One GPU I have always liked is the MSI GTX 780 lightning.

How is this even possible?

And here is todays worst Joke. A must have @Mr. Fox?  D🤮E🤮L🤮L

Dell Claims It’s Precision 3680 Tower Workstation With Intel Core i9-14900K CPU Offers “World’s Fastest Single-Threaded” Performance

Dell is not breaking the rules here and simply running the 14900K CPU at its max PL2 limit which is 253W, all the time, and that makes sure that the workstation doesn't breach the warranty guidelines set by Intel by overclocking the chip.

Haven't had a chance to install the new NVIDIA app, but from my experience using NVCleanstall to remove all the junk from the stock drivers resulted in worse performance versus installing from the standard download or GeForce Experience. I missed having my rays traced so I took back that bargain 7800 XT in favor of a 4070 Super. I also swapped my desktop CPU to a 5600X3D from the 5950X as my MacBook Pro is now doing all my work-related heavy lifting. Despite the "downgrade" I saw a nice bump in performance in most games. Cyberpunk can give a 4K/60 experience with ultra ray tracing (and DLSS obviously), which wasn't possible with the 5950X. I'm also exploring the idea of swapping out my DDR4-3600 CL19 RAM for something with tighter timings now.

Interesting on the GPU having no thermal paste. I would love to know the whole story behind that. Hopefully, the owner picked it up cheap from someone that thought it was broken.

Not much I have for comment on the Dell other than better than a Mac. But, that's not saying much. Any number multiplied by zero is zero. Isn't it interesting how it is so easy to tell lies for marketing purposes. It seems like it is becoming the new normal.

I bought a new power supply. Let’s see if MSI can keep this good quality streak up with their products! I ordered a MSI 1000 watt power supply. That is going to be a tight squeeze with my system and all of these pumps and accessories. But if it’s a quality unit it should handle my computers needs with no problems and no screaming sounds. I’m excited to get rid of the coil whine. 😃

From your past adventures, I'm surprised you didn't go for a 1600w or close PSU. 1000w seems kinda conservative for you.

First you get an R batch 14900k and don't even delid it

Second you back away from top end and go 4080 Super

Lastly, you opt for only a 1000w PSU stepping down from 1300w

Looks like MSI is making a comeback of the affordable MPower mobos focused on overclocking memory and CPU. Would be nice if they can get Apex or Dark performance out the door for $199.

As long as you don't use their included software in Windows, you will be okay. I assume the reason why the board was out of stock was due to a revision. Gigabyte LOVES hardware revisions (I am sure the others do as well), but at least they showcase it's a revision (unlike Asus and MSI).

I'm surprised you are running all of the pumps and external things off the system PSU. On both of my larger desktops the radiator fans and pumps run off of an inexpensive PSU with a jumper on the 24-pin motherboard cable. They do not connect to the system PSU at all. For one thing they are too far away from the computer. I'd need too many long SATA and Molex extensions. Plus it would seem kind of messy having the extensions strung across several feet.

Yep lol. I probably should have just bought a 4090. I already have funds tied up in the (2) 4080 Supers for the moment. Newegg has yet to refund me on the other one. But I’m very happy with this 4080 Super Suprim X. I honestly didn’t think I’d like an air cooled GPU this much. Another shocker here, I have actually considered leaving it on air cooling! 😁

As for delidding this 14900KF, it really doesn’t need it. Delid would definitely drop temps -15C and drop more voltage off. But the daily reliability would go way down on it. Solder is such a great long term TIM no maintenance needed, and it’s already a beast. If a chip can perform good without a delid I always recommend that option.

As for the power supply, I think this 1000 watt unit is probably just a stepping stone. I really want to see if my computer can run coil whine free lol. I have my doubts 😂. We’ll see tomorrow.

All 5 of my pumps are mounted right to my test bench, so they all plug right in to the power supply that powers the system. No long cables or extensions. I only have 1 fan that I use to flow some air on the back of my GPU since using air cooled graphics cards lately. Other than that the wires are pretty tidy. I think these pumps only use 25-37 watts each, so maybe 125-185 extra watts on the system. I think it’s closer to 125 watt though.

I should be okay inside of 1,000 watts I think. I just want to alleviate this electrical interference noise.

Lots of cool stuff coming out! I want one of those MSI Mpower Z790 2 slot boards, I didn’t know those were even coming out. I mean, I can already see 8200c36+ happening on that little cheap board easily. And for only $199.99 that leaves more money for CPU/GPU budget! How smart of MSI to offer a bare bones 2 dimm motherboard catered to overclocking for cheap. 😁

Of course you can cut down prices when you go for micro boards. Less parts, components and less materiale. In short... Less of everything outside maybe better mem oc' due the 2 dimm design. Also if you build automotive cars in very small design... They become cheaper🙂 Is less more... Not in my world.

Got around to installing the Powercolor Hellhound 7900XTX White edition in my daughter's system and WoW is still a hot mess and still won't work with DX12 and DX11 is a crashing, stuttery mess.......

I did play a bit of Hogwarts to make sure everything was good to go for her tomorrow (she's ready to replay it now a year later) and yeah.....that 7900XTX just destroys her old 3070 badly (as it should). I turned on all the eye candy and bumped it up to 4k and her 12400 is bottlenecking the system now hardcore especially in Hogsmeade. Hogwarts would compensate for limited VRAM by downgrading assets and it was readily apparent. Now everything is lush, full and beautiful.

Let me see how long it takes for her to notice the graphical upgrade in game (the monster chonker of a card I had to angle in on a diagonal might be a give away!).

I like the way it looks in her system though.

Timespy run x 2. Good temps and especially hotspot temps! Standard ~29k out of box score.

Thats really cool. I have been putting this off too long and I’m building my son a system right now. I’m not sure if I’m going to re-use an old Z490+DDR4 setup I have and grab a used 10900K and start with that. Or maybe I just go for a newer Intel system all together. I’m looking at 10900K prices and they seem a bit too expensive.

They have done away with some of the fancy schmancy trim that makes things look special even if they are not. That may account for part of the cost reduction as well.

I agree with you. MSI is going to be the new substitute for EVGA I think. I've never owned an MSI product that I can remember thinking was a piece of garbage. I hope Vince ends up going to work for them and they release Kingpin branded enthusiast components.

any news on the Kingpin front yet? its been a while, thought something wouldve gone official by now.

I haven't heard anything of late. I certainly hope that it's still going to happen.
