Got around to installing the Powercolor Hellhound 7900XTX White edition in my daughter's system and WoW is still a hot mess and still won't work with DX12 and DX11 is a crashing, stuttery mess.......

Hmm. You sit and enjoy the new and buggy crashing mess from the Red camp while I sit enjoy the old GTX 750Ti from the Green camp grabbing Gold and points😁 Almost as we sit in two different worlds, LOOL

Not sure the new will fix the crashing.

My previous post was so long, hence a new. Where have mr Musk been? Under a rock?😂

“Just bought a new PC laptop and it won’t let me use it unless I create a Microsoft account, which also means giving their AI access to my computer! This is messed up,” lamented the tech CEO. “There used to be an option to skip signing into or creating a Microsoft account.” He asked his followers, “Are you seeing this too?”

And it seems nvidia and Jensen struggle to meet their profit's goals from the gaming division. Could it be because their new Graphics cards is all too expensive? Or are they all too cheap? Maybe slower sales of AI server chips is expected forwards?

I use the ISO creation tool which is nice not sure which one it is. I can disable the TPM 2.0, and create a local account for the install. And when I load windows the first time it already has a local account made with no password, you better set a password before restarting windows during the first time loading after the “Getting things ready for you” or else you can’t login after a reboot because it’s a local account created with no password assigned, and you’ll have to reinstall windows all over again lol. TPM security is smart but stupid at the same time I think. Smart because back in the day you could just plug in someone’s HDD and use it on your PC. But it also sucks because flipping over to my motherboards bios position can trip the TPM and break my OS.

Very cute. Almost as my second PSU as the tiny Cooler Master V750 SFX Gold I got to power extra accessories. But how does it work when you run everything at max? Will you run a dual PSU setup to save the new tiny from burning up?😆

This will be a test of its ability for sure. So far so good. No power shutdowns. It is a quality 1000 watt unit. I don’t think I’d ever need two PSU’s though. I have not had the best luck with power supplies.

Seasonic 1200w Platinum (Power shutdowns at 700-800 watt loads)

EVGA 1300G+ (Popped and smoked after 1 day)

EVGA 1300P+ (Reliable but with coil whine, higher the frame rate the louder it was)

Snack Sized MSI 1000W (So far so good lol)

My CPU is very efficient 303 watts R23@5.9/4.8/5.0 auto voltage LLC4

The GPU can consume 380+ watts under a heavy overclock, but stock its sub 300 watts in 4K.
D5 pumps typically use a max of 37 watts apparently, but I have an Aqua Computer D5 pump and at 100% or 4800RPM it only consumes 20 watts of power. So my pumps probably use 100 watts together all (5) of them. I have (2) 2TB M.2 SSD’s, and I use (1) 120MM fan. The PSU can handle about 1200 watts in a warm environment before kicking off.  But I don’t think I can get near its limits.

I know it’s tiny, and I know it’s kinda hilarious. And if it fails, I will go get me a big dog 1600 PSU lol. But I really don’t think I need more than a 1,000 watt.

Well, I returned the 14900KF turd to Amazon today. The previously returned 14900K from Amazon was received by them Monday of last week. They have it, haven't updated the order to show it received and still no refund. I spoke to their customer service twice and both reps confirmed they have it and I will just have to wait until they process the return. The garbage 14900K returned to NewEgg was refunded within 2 days of them receiving it.

The SP102 (P114) 14900K coming from Germany is still in Germany sitting in a DHL shipping container for 4 days waiting to be put on a flight to the US with no date specified. Once it is received here by DHL it will be handed off to the goons at USPS for delivery via "Priority Mail" (LOL).

So now it is a waiting game to get the one from Germany and get my $1200 back from Amazon.

I am using the SP96 14900K purchased from @Talon in the white Apex. It is delidded and bare die now and overall a very respectable sample. It is very similar to my SP108 13900K installed in the Munchkin PC for P and E cores, but weaker on the IMC/memory overclocking. The memory controller SP was reported as kind of weak (MC78) on other BIOS versions and I could not get it stable past 8000 on the memory until I flashed test BIOS v9901 from Safedisk. That changed the MCSP to 82 and now it's stable at 8200 and running fine using the settings that were stable at 8000. This one from Brother @Talon is WAY BETTER than the trash bin crap samples sent back to NewEgg and Amazon. They must be saving all of the "average" 14900K to be rebranded as "KS" and leaving the trash for those that can't wait and don't want to pay extra for normal.

8200.png

I also flashed test BIOS v9901 for the Encore and it is very solid. It did not change any SP numbers on the SP117 13900K, but I was able to lower the VDIMM for 8600 from 1.650V to 1.600V without losing any stability. BIOS v9901 seems like the best for both versions of the Apex.

An observation in comparing four 14900K/KF CPUs to four 13900KS CPUs (including the one the white Apex killed with TurboV Core) is that the 14th Gen seem slower at the same clocks than 13th Gen. Probably due to vulnerabilities mitigations. All of the 13900KS CPUs are 500-700 points higher in Cinebench R23 than the 14th Gen CPUs at P58x/E47x/C50x on both the Apex and Apex Encore. I'm really not identifying the 14th Gen CPUs as being a legitimate upgrade over 13900KS. Ignoring the SP ratings and VF curves and giving them what they need to run stable, the 14th Gen seem equal or worse depending on how much voltage is needed, but not demonstrably a better product in terms of performance or benchmark results when run at the same clock speeds. None of the samples I have so far will overclock higher, so kind of pointless product unless if you have a decent 13900KS.

With the LLC tuned this 14900KS needs 1.280V for Cinebench R23 at P58x/E47x/C50x which is coincidentally identical to the SP108 13900KS (P120), but doesn't score as well. Temps and power draw are also the same. Pretty interesting. So, moral to the story is, don't pass up a nicely binned 13900KS in favor of a 14900K. You'll accomplish nothing. Thanks for killing my SP112 CPU ASUS. Your garbage motherboards have killed 3 so far (one 10th Gen and two 13th Gen). Good job, guys.

I linked to it in the above post.  But, here is a link to the file Safedisk put on his Google Drive.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/12BvcW0xg68IQfGmv1K0-blIk6606YY1S/view

That link above is for the white Apex.

This link is for the Apex Encore

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1SABixIb6seTaeyyPJNC9rISTGZ_IAtfc/view

Both are version 9901. You can also tell by the file name. The Encore version has Encore in the file name.

Thanks for the testing. This test bios have new microcode from newes firmware/Intel. Have you compared the MC between 13th and 14th gen ? And have you compared bench results (stock or/and oc'd) with the new vs old MC ? I expect the previous MC is still stored in the new test Bios and can be utilised if you change MC.

Edit. And it seems Asus force you to use latest IMEI now because that follow each new bios version forwards. I hope they don't do that if the newest MEI isn't needed for newer test bios.

And here is even a newer MEI firmware on Asus forum.... So stay away if not needed Firmware : 16.1.30.2330

Edit. It seems MSI push on you 16.1.30.2330 if you update to their newer bios versions for Z790 boards.

Btw. Very fun with new bios. The trash MC went down from 74 or was it 78 and down to 70. Is less more?😆

And very nice have to activate 7 new modern Windows versions but with the nice and thrusty Win 7 you don't have this shenigans/stupidity. With my older Asus Z690 board I never needed to activate any Windows afterwards due a push on the second bios or after flashing new bios. Damn, I hate the newer and more modern.

You can ask you yourself.... Is all this worth it? Nope. Because newer mostly bring nothing. And I don't care about any new and mostly useless security fixes from HW manufacturers. They bring nothing to the (bench) table.

@Mr. Fox and @Papusan Now that Scott is no longer at AMD, why don't one of you ask if he used to be in NBR. He is still taking shots at Nvidia for whatever reason.

This... He worked as general manager of Nvidia's GeForce business from September 2012 to May 2015.

Maybe he got kicked out from the Green Team with the tail between his legs?🙂 We may never get to know why he left nvidia after such short time. But the hate against nvidia and the massive "hail" of AMD have been there since then.  Same with AMD vs Intel. Maybe Intel will be the next on his hit list.

During the OOBE setup you should be able to to open CMD (Shift+F10 / Shift+Fn+F10) and run OOBE /BYPASSNRO. This will allow local user account creation, or at least it still works for me as some state it doesnt work.

You can ask you yourself.... Is all this worth it? Nope. Because newer mostly bring nothing. And I don't care about any new and mostly useless security fixes from HW manufacturers. They bring nothing to the (bench) table.

Amen. It is taken for granted that newer is going to be trash, and even in the rare circumstance it might have something better it comes with something worse. It is pretty sad how some people deliberately look for ME updates. I mean, they obviously don't understand things. There should be a public outcry against it, yet some of the sheeple purposefully update it as a standalone item even. Can't fix stupid.

EVGA is was the only manufacturer that actually understood Intel ME is undesirable. Not only did they refuse to update it (appropriately) they provided a way to disable it with a simple firmware option. This should be standard on all motherboards (consumer, business or enthusiast). It offers nothing of value to anyone other than spying governments and hackers. It's designed solely for the purpose of remote access and created to be a backdoor access point. It makes sense that the CCP requires that motherboard manufacturers keep it updated.

You don't even need to do that much. At the MS account creation/login screen, type the email address no at thankyou dot com, any password, and it will let you use a local account from there.

I was perusing MicroCenter this morning and saw they put the 5800X3D on sale for $270, which would have been enough to tempt me to go that route over the 5600X3D at $200. I don't feel like taking my machine apart again and making the lengthy drive to do the exchange. Still irritating, though.

Yes I have recently come across that method as well. For my personal use case it would be my route to go as well but for work I stick with the above as I unfortunately cant trust people to remember what the PW they set on customer systems which creates more work for me.

270 was right about the price I chose to take the dive for my own 5800X3D, still serving me well as my DD though I would imagine that a 5600X3D would be pretty similar in most games, production couldnt say though, I dont dabble in that on my own time.

It's nice to see such a sense of urgency and emphasis on service from DHL.

Puts them in the same League of Losers (LOL) bucket as USPS.

Don’t laugh guys! lol. 🤣

This tiny little baby PSU is actually working great! Completely silent! No coil whine at all.

I kid. 🙂 These small compact units can still hold it down no problem.

My wife is running a Seasonic GX-850 and it is about that size. It is a workhorse. My daughter's system has an EVGA G2 850 in it and it, too, is a work horse but it is much bigger. My test bench has an EVGA P2 850  and it's bigger and my desktop an EVGA P2 1600w the same size as ypur 1300 P+

I would have just picked up a 1600w and called it a day.....

This new "minimal" @tps3443 does have me concerned. Tap the "z" three times if you're being held against your will.....

Last few returns took extra long. I do know Amazon recently implemented much more thorough return procedures and returns are no longer instant for many electronic and pricier items especially either shipped from Amazon or Amazon Warehouse.

When I returned the Asus Z790i Strix board, they received it on January 11th and it took over a week for them to say they were processing my refund and it would be credited in 2-5 days. It stayed stuck at that step for almost three weeks and I had to contact customer service to manually process the refund.

When I returned the MSI 7900XTX, it took over three weeks for them to acknowledge and process the refund. When I reached out during that return (it was returned October 2023ish), they said the return was still being processed after a week.

Their more stringent return process is fine by me as I think fraudulent returns are starting to impact their bottom line enough for them to step up their return vetting system.

This is how I always bypassed it too when needed. Most times I just let Windows do its thing especially with older hardware.

Something new learned today! I'll have to give that a try next week when I pop in my own drive for a custom install on my daughter's desktop to really test out the 7900XTX in there without disrupting her setup.

I'd personally take the drive and get the 5800X3D for $70 smackers more, but that's just me. 🙂

The price difference is closer to $90 when you factor in time and fuel. Percentage wise, it's a not insignificant premium that doesn't net a corresponding increase in gaming performance, which is what I'm going for since I shifted production duty to the Mac. Plus with the 5600X3D, I came out slightly ahead after selling the 5950X, which wouldn't have been the case for the 5800X3D even factoring in its additional discount.

When was 7900GRE launched? The answer is July 2023 in China. Last year. That's 7 months ago. Better late than never bro @Mr. Fox? And no one bother talk with AMD about this so called bugs the last +6 months? Whats wrong with AMD, their quality and QC problems? Read carefully.... Having been on the market for so many months, it's curious that we've heard nothing about the bug until now.

LOL...it is not a bug, it's a feature!

Clearly, Pat should have spoken to his legal department before stating he bet his company on 18A. If the node doesn't pan out OR TSMC/Samsung have competitive nodes, this will mark the end of Intel as we know it. In a year or two, any rumbling, even a hint of a rumor that Intel won't deliver...huge problem.

The only saving grace is that Intel split their "Products" and "Foundry" businesses. They may have an AMD Global Foundries' problem on their hand and that could spell trouble for their products "division".
