Their more stringent return process is fine by me as I think fraudulent returns are starting to impact their bottom line enough for them to step up their return vetting system.

I agree with that because it is a huge problem for the merchant and the honest customers. It sucks that it takes such a long time to process a refund, but (as usual) bad actors screw things up for everyone.

Hmmm. Is this trustworthy? "AMD's has told me that extremely limited overclocking of the GRE cards is a bug and it will be addressed shortly," stated Steve Walton in the latest YouTube video. When was 7900GRE launched? The answer is July 2023 in China. Last year. That's 7 months ago. Better late than never bro @Mr. Fox? And no one bother talk with AMD about this so called bugs the last +6 months? Whats wrong with AMD, their quality and QC problems? Do they even test their products before and after they are pushed out to the screwed buyers?

Read carefully.... Having been on the market for so many months, it's curious that we've heard nothing about the bug until now.

AMD confirms bug with recent Radeon gaming GPU — RX 7900 GRE overclocking limit will be removed in a future driver

Paying less and getting less is true most of the time. The bar is set low here and those that choose this path like it set low. Merchants like this group because it lets them make money selling garbage to people that embrace garbage because it is cheap. Fast food dollar menu, fat and happy. Their tummy is full of crap and it didn't cost much. They're not hungry and they'll come back for more crap very soon.

Paying more and getting more is not guaranteed, but it should be. The group that chooses this path are often disappointed. Nobody likes getting screwed or being lied to. They expect their steak to be tender, juicy, delicious and cooked to order. That's what they paid for. If it is not, they reject what is on their plate. And, they should. They're a pain in the butt, and they should be. They will tell others what sucked and won't be polite about it.

I kid. 🙂 These small compact units can still hold it down no problem.

My wife is running a Seasonic GX-850 and it is about that size. It is a workhorse. My daughter's system has an EVGA G2 850 in it and it, too, is a work horse but it is much bigger. My test bench has an EVGA P2 850  and it's bigger and my desktop an EVGA P2 1600w the same size as ypur 1300 P+

I would have just picked up a 1600w and called it a day.....

This new "minimal" @tps3443 does have me concerned. Tap the "z" three times if you're being held against your will.....

Yep companies are making things small nowadays, even the fastest GPU’s are tiny little things once you remove its helmet of course. I’m being conservative especially because I do plan to grab a 14900KS. I want to compare with my really good 14900K. No delid on either, just head to head comparison. We’ll see what happens.

Here's an another nice snacks you'll see when it arrives Papusan's plaza. This is the pict of asic from the coming new"old" GTX580 trash boat. +80% is always a good sign🙂 But this doesn't' necessarily mean it has to be a keeper. Anyway... I'm a collector of newer and older HW. I enjoy all tech thats meet my needs.

More pict for the pict jokey @electrosoft🙂

The trash-boat have arrived. Asic score of 82.6% is already confirmed by previous owner. He fired up the card only for me asking. Say hello to Zotac GTX580 Amp! Edition. And there is two other old cards on the way for my old GPU collection. So stay tuned for more pictures😁

And yup, they all need repaste. And the huge GPU lid is equal 4x the zice of the die (+2000 mm²) need a lots of thermal paste.

More images. I opened up the Zotac GTX580 Amp! Edition. Quite new paste on it. But a hell lot of it😱 And this paste is silver/greyish. Not sure what brand this is. But will be a mess to clean up such a load of paste. Maybe he used two tubes, LOOL

The fit between the vapor Chamber and the GPU lid is quite awful for most of these older cards. Thanks god that modern graphics cards use bare die nowadays. And because of the GPU lid and bad fits these old Fermi cards is hard to cool under full load. And with a custom made vbios with higher voltage target it will be even worse😁

Edit. I'l try reduce the gap with sanding down the standoffs on the VC. Because thermal paste ain't cheap🙂 You  can't find ok'ish paste here home below $25 for a small tube. And the GPU lid is as I said huge on these old cards

Yes. I have never touched such thermal paste. Weird type paste. More like glitter and oil. But I don't use the cheapest unknown branded thermal paste. No problem if it's cheap but I want a paste that I have  used before I know perform well.

Good questions from Brother @electrosoft.

If he has not owned an AMD GPU before, this has potential to go either way. He may be happy with it and saving several hundred dollars might be what he is trying to accomplish. He could be tickled pink. But, if he is easily annoyed by some things, including change, and he is used to NVIDIA features he may have massive regrets. This is going to depend on his personality to some degree. If he enjoys ray-traced games, (or playing WOW like @electrosoft does) I would urge him to stick with the Green Goblin's overpriced GPUs.

I have a friend that has been an AMD GPU fan for a long time that purchased a 7900 XTX and regrets it. He loves his 6800 XT, but he is not impressed with his most recent purchase. It might be the only way to know is for him to FAFO, but if he is not happy in the end it is a costly mistake.

The Radeon has worse power efficiency, ray tracing, and its upscaling+frame generation tech still significantly lags those of a GeForce. If you don't care about any of that and simply want flagship caliber performance without the flagship price and/or you have a system with an AMD CPU (less driver overhead compared to NVIDIA), the XTX isn't a bad option at all.

Saving several hundreds? What is into those numbers? I see more like $100-150 dollars vs a 4080 Super if you can get it at MSRP. I would rather buy a overpriced 4080S at MSRP than AMD product. And if the 4080S is in shortage... Just wait with the purchase. But that's me.

I was thinking 4090 not 4080S when I said that. I guess it depends on whether you are paying scalper prices or the correct price, LOL. You know me. We're the same. Don't want the less expensive red cards. Rather pay more for the green crud than the red crud. Less crappy costs more.

I was trying to convince my brother a 4070Ti Super for $799.99 would be a pretty good option. Or better yet just a used 4070Ti just for the good drivers and RT/DLSS performance. But he is set on a 7900XT/XTX.

Anyways using bios 9901 I got 8600 C38-49-49-49-65 with tight secondary timings and 262k tREFI working really well. I am kind of surprised actually. Then again, I never really tried to go after 8600 with this CPU all that much. I was really in to the 8533c36 and 8400c34/36 timings they performed really good.

AMD cards are good if all you're after is pure rasterization performance and don't care about ray tracing, frame generation, or deep learning driven frame upscaling. They're also great if the particular suite of games you play has a performance advantage on AMD cards, which for me, about half my library has a performance advantage on AMD cards, so it was worth it for me to get my 6950 XT when I did. If he 7900 XTX was a few hundred dollars cheaper than it is now, I would've gotten that instead.

Another upside is they use 8 pin power connectors, so no need to worry about your power connector melting.

The caveats are various driver issues which still are not freaking fixed. Fortunately, only one of those affects me, and that's with anything VR related. Do not get an AMD card for VR if you don't have a VR headset that plugs in directly through a USB connection and Displayport. I do VR development, so I have to use an Oculus Rift with my desktop, otherwise if I use a Quest headset through Quest link (wired or wireless), I will get a black screen in 5-10 minutes and my desktop will shut off.

If the only thing you do is play games with the card and your library has a performance advantage on AMD cards, then AMD graphics cards are for you.

Edit: I forgot, there's one more caveat that affects me. I can't do video calls on my desktop either. The drivers irrecoverably crash within 5-10 minutes, so I get that black screen and my computer shuts off.

My brother just does gaming. He loves AMD 😁 so I think it will be okay for him. He’s not gonna be doing any work from the system, or doing anything but gaming and benching.

So:

What is his budget

What model(s) was he considering

What is his current hardware

What games does he play

In that case just let him do whatever he wants to and don't try to influence him. He will either be happy or regret it and either way it will be his decision and not your problem.

I used to have family members ask me for advice on computer and automotive purchasing decisions all of the time. I would tell them exactly what to do and why, and then they would do the opposite. Then they would come to me asking for help resolving issues I told them they would have buying what they were planning to buy against my advice.

It was frustrating for me to deal with that, so I stopped giving advice and I just tell them to do the research on their own and make a choice. Then I don't have to be tempted with saying "see, I told you so" or frustrated by the lamenting "I should have listened to you" because I didn't tell them anything.  They eventually figured it out and stopped asking for help with car problems after my response was always, "sorry, I changed professions a long time ago, and I'm no longer interested in working on your car or mine. Take it to a shop." And, I don't provide any advice on that either. If they don't like the repair shop or they get screwed, that's on them. Then they can't pull the "your shop did... to me" card.

They still ask for computer advice and I tell them that my opinions are not compatible with theirs, so just buy whatever they can afford as long as it is not made by Apple. It was usually some piece of crap they bought because it is cheap or because some idiot they thought was smarter than me told them to. I still get sucked into their computer problems most of the time. I tried the "bring it over and leave it here and when I have spare time I will look at it" trick and that never works. They always do. I did have a few relatives buy Apple products even though I told them not to and when they asked for help fixing problems or doing upgrades I just told them, "no, I'm sorry you should have listened to me, I am not interested in working on crApple products" and wish them good luck getting it fixed or upgraded. Now the crApple fans don't even bother asking me anymore.

Glad to hear it is working nicely for you as well. What CPU, IMC and DIMM voltage values and tight secondary timing are you using the memory?

The 7900xtx is a great card. It is a beast at rasterization, and the price has come down a bit since launch. He really can't go wrong with purchasing it.

Trying to sell the extra 8000mhz kit I have here on FB, and the clowns I get are amazingly ignorant. "That kit is only $120 new", "there is no difference between 6000mhz, and 8000mhz", "you are stupid, you will never get $180 for it"....The level of stupidity is astounding!

The ignorance and stupidity of the general public, including "gamers" is more than astounding. It's actually rather pathetic and tragic. I remember you posting earlier in this thread. I will see if I can find it using the forum search to see which kit it is. I don't remember if it is the part part number as both of my 8000 kits or not.

Edit: @RaidermanI have looked and coming up with nothing using forum search posted by you, which is really strange. I know I remember seeing it posted, more than once. What is the part number? Can you post a picture of the box showing that? I might know someone that is interested depending on the part number.

Thanks. I know a couple of guys that might be interested. Looks like it is going for about $240 on NewEgg. How much do you want for it? I will let them know and put them in contact with you if they want it.

If you haven't already tried, overclock.net marketplace is also a good option.

Wow, just tested the Asus Strix vBIOS on my 4070 Super, and unless there is some other issue, Asus actually limits the memory OC on that vBIOS. The vBIOS will not let you get higher than +1575Mhz on the memory, while all other vBIOS and even my stock FE vBIOS allow for full performance.

Since I have a golden 4070 Super with insane memory, I use Asus's tool to push the memory OC to +2600/26.2gbps memory since MSI Afterburner limits you to +2000 for whatever stupid reason. I see no reason to put any limit on it, it's arbitrary it seems and for no good reason.

Still the vBIOS seems really good, Asus usually has great vBIOS and this one, even with a PWL of only 295w still performance really well. Had it had no limits on the memory OC and higher PWL like the Aorus vBIOS, I'm sure it would easily be the best performer for my FE card.

Anyways, I know not applicable to many or any on here, just ridiculous to find their top tier card has a memory OC limiter in place. How ridiculous, also their PWL is pitiful compared to the competition and the asking price. Unreal.

Edit: This of course may not be present on the retail card as I had to search far and wide to find this vBIOS for the Strix 4070 Super. Nobody has published it "officially" and I found a random tech power up link that had it. It's not even on the unverified list though when you search over there. So it's possible this is an engineering or internal version that has the limit in place.

I think the 7900xtx is a fine card as long as you do your homework.  I must believe in it as this is my third whack at trying to fit a round peg in a square hole.

I try to shy away from facebook for selling some items when possible because of the sheer stupidity.

I find most just, "want to play," and do not care what's under the hood. Next tier kinda know the buzzwords and shop by that. You then have the semi-knowledgeable. Then you have us (with variances within). Then you have the hardcore Lummi's, Cen's and such and finally you then you have the Buildzoids and NWRs types.

Fantastic kit that performed as advertised. I ended up selling it when I went back to all AMD at 6000 2x32GB dialed in after testing and realizing AMD is not ready for prime time yet but getting there. Hopefully their new chips will take advantage of their version of Intel gear 2 even moreso.

Next time around, I would like to see a killer 2-dimm AMD board from MSI considering the 2-dimm Asrock B650 $75 special was able to hit 7866 stable and 8000 unstable while my 4-dimm carbon gave up the ghost slightly below 7866 overall.
