The 5090 may be 50% faster, but at what cost? Knowing ngreedia, there will probably be a 50% mark up from the 4090, or more. $3000 gpu's?

I suspect Nvidia will command $1999.99 for the 5090. AMD has given up this generation top end and the way early reports are fleshing out especially the next go around as Nvidia is just too far ahead and hopefully they use some common sense and really stick it to Nvidia for the mid tier and below market.

Playing through Starfield for the 2nd time. Well, I actually didn’t quite finish it the first go around. But I’m starting a new game. I’ll say that this 4080 Super Suprim-X has no problem running the game 4K native completely maxed out and giving a good frame rate.  I am amazed by running the game with 4K+DLAA+Frame Gen. This provides a native picture and offers a very nice frame boost which feels very smooth at 100+ FPS. I’m actually liking frame gen a lot. It’s not perfect. But it gives you another setting to tweak. And in this case it pays off well.

We usually have two common options with graphics cards in more demanding games. But with frame gen we get a middle ground or third option.

(1) DLSS Quality, ULTRA, highest FPS with just slightly lower image quality. Smoothest latency. Best performance usually.

(2) Native 4K ULTRA, best image quality very playable FPS still but feels buzzy/static like or jittery in the mouse.

(3) DLAA 4K + Frame Gen best image quality, still very high frame rate, latency better than that of a demanding native 4K game with a lower FPS. 100+ FPS!!! 😁

Anyways, who’s buying a 14900KS on launch? I’ll be skipping this one. I was gonna grab one for testing just for fun. But now I’m thinking probably not. I expect they are $749.99 at Micro Center, but for NewScalpEgg they’re going to be $799.99+ tax. Or possibly even $819.99 if they start selling well.

So I got that tower M.2 heatsink installed in my PC on an Acer GM7000 2TB PCIE4 drive (that I have my OS on). Acer doesnt make it in-house, its one of those OEM supplied but branded Acer products, BINIX iirc?

Im not running anything particularly intensive (at all) but I just had to have it on.

image.thumb.png.1d1febecb2f6b5eceb69bd2a974467d3.png

Thus far havent seen temps above 32c

Now I want to get the Sonnet 4x10Gbps USB C pcie adapter or perhaps the GV-Titan TB3 card from Gigabyte. That might actually be better since it would be actively powered by the PSU. Wont be until next month or so.

Welcome to the Acer* GM7000 family. I adore all six of GM7000 4TB drives. The included DRAM does make a difference.

I'm using four of the drives in a RAID array for my video editing. I'm thinking of picking up the ASUSTOR FLASHSTOR 12 Pro. Yes that NAS will handicap the speeds of the GM7000 drives, but convenience is king.

I looked at the Samsung offering first but they were much more expensive, almost settled on the SN850x but the GM7000 was 25-30 USD cheaper for near same level of performance. At that level of performance I doubt I will be able to perceive a difference relatively speaking.

I have been dabbling with ImageUSB to provision multiple drives (each with multiple partitions) so I finally had a use case where I needed a really fast drive to host the data that it pulls from. Up to this point I still didnt really see much merit to NVME (for my use case), of course now I want to make a Windows installation via RAMdisk as an interesting project (no idea how though).

Why buy custom cables with (angled) 12V-2x6 connectors from Cablemod when you can get them from the PSU OEM?  About time all the different OEM brands doing the same. This type cable is here to stay. You don't need any of the cheapo made custom cables from Cablemod. Buy a quality PSU from a reputable brand and you get quality cables on top as well.

Seasonic launches 12V-2×6 (H++) 600W power cables for NVIDIA RTX GPUs

Hmmm. Designed for a lifetime of 50 mating cycles, a normal standard for connectors. When become 50 mating cycles the normal standard for connectors?

For low/mid end.

I keep an Excel spreadsheet and take photographs to document each cable-to-component mating cycle because everyone knows that this has always been the standard that the digi-gods decided at the beginning of time. Mating event #51 requires replacement of the cable or power supply.

Spoiler

NOT!
Who are the idiots that make this stuff up? And, who even says they have the authority to make this totally arbitrary decision that is based on nothing more than uninformed assumptions?

as for those "50 mating cycles", its probably equivalent to 8-pin pcie limit of "150W" or the M.2 slot rating of "60 cycles". might all be listed in some spec sheet or white paper but the reality would be much different 🙂

Extremely unlikely you would find a KS as good as your current 14900K or my SP117 13900KS. The notion that everyone that buys one will have a silicon lottery winner is specious. I am expecting most of the 14900KS to be just a little better than mediocre 14900K/13900KS with a few exceptions. From Seasonic.... The exact time to market depends on your location. Please contact *****@*****.tld for more information. Send them an email.

Regarding lifetime of mating cycles... Seasonic use whatever numbers they can pull out from their hat. In previous link they said 50 cycles is the "normal" standard. Here below can you see they say.... Designed for a lifetime of 30 mating cycles, a normal standard for connectors. So put in what number you want🙂

One thing for sure.... Lower quality cables/connectors will have lower maiting cycles. In short... I would avoid Cablemod (custom) cables as I already have stated several times. Happy mating😀

I hope that something happens to cause Qubic to become worthless so that all of the miners that buy one or more of them lose their digital heiny. In fact, I hope that happens to all forms of crypto. I would actually love to see all forms of crypto currency become worthless. People that live on the basis of getting something for nothing deserve to get exactly nothing. Miners that buy up stock deserve to go bankrupt and have to sell all of their no longer useful PC hardware at a loss. I'd also settle for the joy of seeing a power surge destroy all of the equipment they purchased... especially if the loss is uninsured.

Most people dont sit on new coins, they transfer it into ETH or Bitcoin.

I'll be passing Qubic mining, CPU mining seems like a pain. I mine Raven from time to time but usually during the Winter to warm up the house.

I don't see this as big profits. With graphics cards you need only a single platform. With Cpu mining you need MB/ram and Cpu for every setup. So $850+ in cost. Then you have different places in the world you pay a lot for the elecricity. Let them mine and earn minimum. Stupidity always come at a cost. Can't be cured.

The samples will follow the standard "Always slightly better than the worse 14900k but might match many 14900k in the mid"

|---------14900K--------|

     |----------14900KS---------|

14900KS just guarantees you won't get a terrible 14900K but no guarantees of a "good" 14900KS

The beauty is you're suddenly seeing an influx of good 14900K's popping up on the forums for sale.

As for Amazon, you are going to need to go into chat and tell them it has been over two weeks since they've had it in their possession and they will usually manually process the refund for you. Their new stringent standards for returns are definitely delaying returns from Amazon and Amazon Warehouse.

We also have to factor in most users are not going to plug and unplug their GPUs 50+ times in their entire ownage lifetime. If it is plugged and unplugged I'd say even 10 times that is pushing the upper limit. I think I've plugged and unplugged mine maybe 5 times total if that over the last 14 months and I've done numerous system swaps and parts.

Using the ole tentacle you can just leave it plugged in though and disconnect the PSU cables when removing it. You don't have that luxury with a dedicated PSU 12VHPR connector.

Yes, I have spoken with Amazon Customer Service three times already. UPS tracking shows they have it, but the order does not reflect that they do. The 14900KF turd got refunded within a few days of them receiving it and it was returned over a week later. The last person I spoke with said to wait until the return window closes and they can force the refund because they do show it as being received on their end (as does UPS). They could not explain why the order status has not been updated and the refund has not been processed. The last person I spoke with said there is nothing in their system indicating a problem, only that it was "in process" (in limbo).

Safedisk have released new beta bios today for the new Cpu. As usual... Release notes are almost non-existent.

ROG MAXIMUS/STRIX Z790 Series Beta Bios 2101/1101

I grabbed them both this morning from his post in ROG forum, but have not had time to test them for stability and performance yet.

Judging on nothing more that setting XMP and running AIDA64, memory peformance is a regression using this BIOS on the white Apex. Read, write, copy and latency are all poor compared to the values using the XMP profile with a previous BIOS version.

As for Amazon, you are going to need to go into chat and tell them it has been over two weeks since they've had it in their possession and they will usually manually process the refund for you. Their new stringent standards for returns are definitely delaying returns from Amazon and Amazon Warehouse.

From what little I gathered from my brother who works at Amazon, these "holds" are only applying to customer accounts they don't deem wholly profitable. He didn't go into details over what that means. I assume, if you return certain electronics as defective, there is a higher chance Amazon sends it back to the manufacturer, instead of taking the loss - either by offering it on AW or return wholesale. At that point, you may play the waiting game.

It may also be the "not wholly profitable" applies to the product provider as well. If Amazon is merely distributing the CPUs for Intel and taking a commission, there is little profit for them. But, it still doesn't explain why the 14900KF got processed within about three days. That suggests it could be little more like a breakdown in process rather than a process running its course.

I'd also settle for the joy of seeing a power surge destroy all of the equipment they purchased... especially if the loss is uninsured.

agreed 100% on that. i keep trying to convince people not to "invest" into crypto. even with stocks and the highly people / investor mindset dependent fluctuations of the stock market, u at least have SOME actual reality backing them up, i.e. real companies, real products  & services, actual value.  same goes for FIAT currencies, u always have the actual economy of a country / bloc of countries backing them up.

what do we have for crypto? nothin except the "belief" that it "must be worth something". 🤪 anybody saying gaming or benching is a waste of electricity should focus on crypto first 😄

I really hope this doesn't take off, and fails miserably. I've been excited about zen 5 coming soon. 45K leaked stock CB23 multi core on the 8950x. 👊🤙

I think the issue with them pulling arbitary numbers out of their butt like that is the problem because there is nothing to substantiate or quantify it. I agree with you in terms of how many times on a specific build, but many PSUs have a long warranty (10 years) and even those that do not have a long warranty keep working beyond their warranty period. They could get used for many years on multiple builds. So, depending on what cable one is looking at, 50 times over a span of years with multiple builds, motherboard swaps, GPU upgrades, etc. might not be too big of a stretch. The vast majority of end users won't plug and unplug cables 50+ times. If they do, it doesn't mean the useful life of the connector has arbitrarily ended. It might be less than 50 times depending on the quality of the part and the way the user handles them. It's subtle nuance, but there is a difference presenting something as fact and suggesting it is a given that cannot be questioned rather than presenting information as an educated rough estimate based on napkin math and simple logic.

Hmmm.  Thanks. It seems they try make the bios works with  the coming KS. Did you check if Asus added latest MEI 16.1.30.2330 firmware in their beta? And did you check if they used same MC as for previous bios version? Maybe it contain a new not released MC version.

Apex and Apex Encore share the same EC and ME version number, and the ME version did not change from 0071. The only changes (again the same version numbers for Apex and Apex Encore) are updates to EC 0142 and Intel MC updated to version 123.
