I am finding X870E Carbon 1A1B Beta (from svet as MSI forum) is working as well as 1A14 or maybe a little better, but only if I leave PPT set to "Auto" instead of disabled. Disabling PPT seems to adversely affect memory training on AMD. It reduces latency on Intel.

Hmmm. Is this what gamers have waited for the last month? One thinfg for sure... Intel will release security patches at the end of Arrow Lake life. And we all know what to expect right before relase of a new gen chips.

Intel's latest Arrow Lake CPU firmware reportedly offers little to no performance gains

Rumor has it that the upcoming 0x114 microcode is the long-awaited one-stop fix for Arrow Lake, which has leaked online. While we don't recommend flashing microcodes from third-party sources, a few brave souls at Overclock.net did that just for experimentation, and to their dismay, the gains were non-existent. As a user reported, his Core Ultra 9 285K paired with the ASRock Z890 Taichi OCF saw a 6% drop in Cinebench R23 MT scores because of low clock speeds.

Here's yet another failure. The Cpu and the MB use 3x 8 pins connectors nowadays. With this (white) fancy PSU you have abysmal 3x 8 pin + the modern 12+4 pin connector for nvidia graphics cards. So no love for coming AMD and Intel graphics cards. How stupid is that? And you can't power up your nvidia graphics cards if it have 8 pin connectors. Modern means better. Because it's newer and hence has to be better? This type PSU's should have come with only 8-pins connectors instead for the 12+4 pin connector. Just put with 8-pins to 12+4 pin adapter cable. How stupid can some (design) engineers be?

GameMax, an emerging brand of PC gaming components including gaming cases and power supply units, proudly announces the GS SFX Gold Series power supply

GameMax Introduces GS SFX Gold Series PSU with ATX 3.1 and PCIe 5.1 Standards

wGaL1fMgD7W9hsm8.jpg

And who'm would power up the CPU this way? Yes you get an pigtail (4 + 4 Pin) ATX 12V Power cable for powering the Cpu but I don't like this sorts of cheapo made design solution. Ans same idiotic design idea for the more powerful 850W models.

Gamemax.... Yup the prefered PSU. For some newer Nvidia graphics cards.

Yep, this chip / platform is a lot of fun. I guess a 7970X Threadripper would have been higher performance, but I really wanted Intel and a monolithic chip.

Strangely I let it run with the XMP profile enabled looping memtest86 while I was at church tonight and it passed just fine. Booted into Windows and no BSOD yet.

Yep, picked up the Sage from Micro Center over the weekend and really liking it so far. I will have better airflow for the whole system once I move it into the new, larger case. Liquid cooling may be on the table. The CPU thermal throttles at 94C at 46x all core with the current bad airflow. I think the horizontal orientation of the U14S is sub-optimal but from reviews it appears the NH-D9 4U is smaller and less capable.

I think the 3400 chips can cool well due to the massive surface area but there may be more heat generated from those tile interconnects.

I would actually have been pulled to the Asrock W790 or Asus W790-ACE more if they only had four memory slots instead of eight.

Lots of good info on level1techs for sure. I have noticed the HEDT crowd seems very AMD biased though. Even just going to Micro Center to pick up the Sage the sales reps there were confused as to why I was building with a Xeon instead of Threadripper.

lol when I was asking about the only W790 at Central Computer's they didn't question me one bit. Not even when I asked for Xeon prices LOL

Was kinda nice. I am happy I went with W790 over threadripper. Haven't had this much fun on a desktop platform in awhile.

These large beasts are indeed easy to cool. Stock clocks the Noctua cools the cpu easily.

Looks great! Very very nice build! Now, you gotta go and grab a few more 3465X chips and bin them up. 😂 I’m 100% kidding of course.

My brand new Xeon w3175X ended up being worse than my first one lol. So, I swapped back to my old chip. There wasn’t a huge difference between them which tells me these chips are all probably pretty consistent to one another.

1st w3175X runs 4.7Ghz@1.205V

2nd w3175X runs 4.6Ghz@1.215V

How has the reliability been on this thing?

This I’m unsure about. I think either option can push really close to the boundaries on RDIMM ECC DDR5 overclocking stability though, biggest thing seems to be ram setup overall. Watch out for the Asrock W790 2.0 it has a very very stripped down I/O port setup unless you’re okay with that.

I’d probably just opt for the regular Asrock W790, or Asus W790 from what I’ve read these are really good at ram OC. I don’t think these boards are too drastically different with W790. Maybe just go for what has your favorite features and best price.

See this thread here and 350+ pages for more detail on W790 and ram tuning. I learned a lot here about the platform!

This platform has been more reliable than my Z790 with both 12700K & 14900K (latter being the obvious why it's unstable lol). And both of those CPUs were brand new.

My last stable platform was X299 so it's nice to see W790 has been ironed out because I saw lots of negative reviews regarding the platform.

I mentioned a couple of times the PCIe quad NVMe card that I use in the bottom PCIe slot on the Carbon with no effect on the GPU, but could NOT use on the Taichi without the GPU falling to x8. So, Brother @cylix even if the Taichi were not an E-ATX, being able to use all 4 NVMe slots at the expense of forfeiting the viability of using the bottom x16 slot makes the Taichi is a horrible trade-off and that makes it an instant loser. (Nevermind the fact that it sucks at memory overclocking and has horrid memory latency compared to the Carbon.)

The Carbon has 1xM.2 Gen5 above the GPU slot and 1xM.2 Gen 5 below the GPU. It has two more Gen4 M.2 slots, so four in total. If you use the M.2 slot under the GPU slot it will cut the GPU slot to x8. So, I leave that M.2 slot empty and use the bottom PCIe x16 slot with the Sabrent card (Quad NVMe) with no effect on the GPU. I give up one M.2 slot for the luxury of adding three move NVMe drives. So, I have seven NVMe drives in use on the Carbon and the GPU is still x16.

This is what I use. I have one in the Z790 Apex as well. SABRENT 4-Drive NVMe M.2 SSD to PCIe 3.0 x4 Adapter Card [EC-P3X4]

That’s good to hear. I really enjoyed Z790 but it wasn’t completely reliable though. I had some periodic troubles with it. Main thing being out of GPU memory was annoying that would randomly creep up, and also Zoom would not work on the 13/14 gen cpu’s for some reason. I don’t know what that was about.

I haven’t had any issues on my Dominus or 3175x.

That's odd. I have not experienced either of those issues and I use Zoom at work and it works fine. Did you get the out of GPU memory playing games? I don't play games a whole lot, but haven't run into that with COD or BF, Crysis titles, etc.

GPU out of memory was directly linked to 13th/14th degrading issues and/or bad/unstable OCs. I could force one on my 13900KS by running it on its edge with my substandard cooling. I never have  encounter one on my SP109 14900KS.....ever.

Only used Zoom on my 12900k systems (laptop and desktop) and zero issues.

I would experience it, but mainly because I would bleed the chips dry on voltage so they used as little power as possible, and also ran cooler, so I think I would just be running too close to the stability barrier because I always ran with an undervolt (Auto voltage with some manually fixed low LLC, or manually set acll/dcll) I'm not sure what the issue was with Zoom, I assumed compatibility problems, I never could fix it. But I also use Windows 11 so maybe that's why.  From 13900K to 14900KS I never could get Zoom to work.

I love finding an absolute minimum voltage for a CPU and sticking with that. No more and no less. Just locked in voltage. And I could typically do this with Intel 13/14th Gen, I could run Ycruncher undervolted with reduced power and assume all is well until it tells you it's not stable one day. Whether that one day is due to a new game launching usually lol. Again, this was more or less my own fault because I always undervolted and pushed for lowest load voltage possible.

None of these issues were the reasoning for me selling my stuff though, I just was bored and did not want to try the Z890/285K stuff. And I really only used Zoom once per month with work.

I still have several X299 mobos, so I'm trying to get CPUs for them. I checked prices for the 10980XE and they are still going for 400 to 600 bucks. Insane! If they were 200 or less, I'd buy three, but I guess I'll wait. It seems a lot of these CPUs are already delidded. I am not sure if I want to trust some random guy's delidding skills.

Joining me on the sidelines? 🙂

I'm rocking this 4070 Super with a 60 day return window if needed. It is doing well enough that I could limp along with it for months on end if needed. No coil whine, handles FO76 just fine, WoW can get dicey sometimes but not a deal breaker at 4k but had to drop it down from 10 to 8 and now 7 w/ RT off so I'm feeling it and its small bus and less than half the 4090 power.

I've already decided if the 5090s are just beyond stupidly priced with idiotic tariff adjustments in place to top off insult to injury,  I'll just ride this for an indefinite length of time or return it and then pick up a discounted Aqua 7900xtx for my loop build out or 8800xt depending on price/performance.

Yes, the Intel B580 was a home run. The native performance is VERY GOOD! It starts to make even bigger strides at 1440P, and then even larger gaps at 4K. The Intel scaling really works, and their XeSS frame gen puts some abnormally large gaps between the 4060. I’m so impressed such a GPU can even perform this well for $250. I had to buy one and be a part of the movement. So I hope it makes Intel a viable option.

About the 4090, I probably will get a 5080 or 5090 at least. I think it depends on the pricing. I really can’t see my self spending more than $1,800+ tax for a 5090 though. They honestly should not be more than that. But if they are like $2,299+ Tax. I’ll be getting a cheaper 5080 to enjoy the new tech features, and lower power.  🥹

The Intel B580 will be going in the 10900K rig. Or used in my main rig when needed.

Anyways, I like to play games in full 4K fidelity. And with GTA 6, Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, Witcher 4, and many others coming out. I have a feeling there’s going to be something that slams the 4090 in to submission. So far there hasn’t really been anything as of yet. I like a minimum 68-70FPS avg with DLSS Quality+FG, those features alone have really been the saving grace for making it such a beast for so long.

Yep, the native performance is comparable and even can beat similar priced 2 years old (yet more expensive) Nvidia and AMD card. Just sad they are fiddled with some weirdo problems. Forget overclocking for now. If and when Intel will fix it... I don't know. But the need for iGPU or a spare GPU to come on track again with the Battlemage GPU (back to working state) isn't an great experience. And this become the norm everytime you want to push the GPU above it's default settings. I have no time for this. So once again a unfinished product from Intel. The modern tech trend continue.

Intel has throttled Arc Battlemage graphics: they physically support PCIe 5.0, but function as PCIe 4.0

Second rant for the weekend....

Greed. All is about greed and maximize profit margins. But I'm sure Intel will regret this move. Almost no chips in some stores (region depent) doesn't mean Intel seell many of their Arrow Lake chips. They simply aren't an option. Neither for gaming or for performance jockey's with desktop builds. The lack of AL chips for desktops is most likely because Intel will try save their Joke Book market share

I think the fact that HyperThreading is missing makes this product worse than if it had it. Again, I'm not an architect, but I would assume this choice was based on cost. Adding complexity adds cost to an already expensive, TSMC-made product, and perhaps a choice was made for a little extra margin vs a little extra performance.

I really hope we don't keep seeing companies trending toward decisions like these from the top down. If hyperthreading was there, I am positive reviews would generally be much more complimentary, and the chip would easily be a more viable contender in the space, and we could put Raptor Lake fully behind us.

There you have it. Maximize profits and at same time try to save their best milking cow (laptop market).

Had Core Ultra included hyperthreading it is somewhat unlikely I would have purchased the 9950X. The lack of it was the nail in the coffin for 285K. It made the CPU a eunuch on face value. No testing necessary. Game over. It was as if Intel deliberately forfeited the match and simply handed AMD the win. Bastards.

So, speaking of 9950X, @Raiderman CPU delid is done and it's ready to send it back home again.

MSI released BIOS v1.A1G for the X870E Carbon. This platform was very sketchy using 24GB memory modules. I can now run my TeamGroup Xtreem 8200 48GB kit on it with the memory tuned at 8000 manually. It will boot 8400 and run 8200 with some minor errors that I could likely tune away if I wanted to waste an inordinate amount of time trying to. There is not a lot of difference between 8000 and 8200 or 8400 and 8600 on Intel. There is even less difference in those steps on AMD. It's kind of freaky how 8200 and 8000 are nearly identical on the 9950X. Read/write/copy and latency don't really change or improve with the higher clock, so I am probably not going to waste time trying to tune 8200.

New is always better.... Also Intel's brand new app for their GPU's have exactly same problems.

We tested the Nvidia App performance problems — games can run up to 15 percent slower with the app

Yup, what is wrong with Nvidia? Is xx60 cards the new xx50 now ? 8 GB vram. Yet again. Of course, none know it for sure before the release.... But everyone should know how Nvidia run their business.

Anyone else ever have problems ordering from Central Computers? This is the 2nd time this has happened on orders. I’ve only ever ordered two things before from them. But they just never complete the order, and it never gets to shipping. I feel like something is up.

03/15 I ordered a 14900KS on Monday morning, 2 days went by and it just sat in “Order processing”. By Wednesday evening I cancelled the order and was refunded.

12/13 I ordered an Intel B580 after receiving the in-stock alert. The order has just been sitting in “Processing” since 12/13. I feel like I may have to cancel this one as well since it’s 12/17.

I’ve never had this problem with Amazon or Newegg. Does anyone else have this happen to them? It feels like a central Computers has a really long processing time or maybe ordered are getting left unattended to. Was hoping to get this Intel B580 by Christmas. Now they show “Out of Stock”🤷‍♂️

They're a much smaller operation than a normal online e-tailer. You can always call.

When I ordered from them, I found out they do zero work on the weekends and your orders are just queued up for processing on Monday so if an item is in high demand you never really know and that includes ordering on Friday. I actually placed my order on a Friday and heard absolutely nothing from them when I ordered a 9800X3D before snagging my Newegg one.

It sat in limbo all through the weekend and into the next week till I contacted them and it was backordered by that point even though it showed "in stock" when I had ordered it so I cancelled my order.

You might want to actually call them or email them to get clarity.

That's interesting. I wonder why? Production issues? Or a NewEgg issue?

Edit: It looks like a production (stock availability) issue for both Ryzen 9 CPUs and the 9800X3D. AMD has only the undesirable Ryzen 7 models and below available on their web store. The good CPU supply is gone.

makes sense, theyre probably collecting high-binned chiplets for the high core count X3D parts.

Yes, they are totally legit. But, they are primarily a local storefront. Many things they sell are not available for shipping, and must be picked up in person. Much like MC only a whole lot smaller.

One thing to be aware of, if you were not already... if your motherboard does not have Resizable Bar Support the Intel GPU may not work correctly. Intel's GPUs must have that functionality to work correctly. I do not know if your HEDT motherboard has that or not.

Totally accurate. They are not a 24/7 e-tailer focused on internet sales, but I have found them pleasant to work with and I had no issues at all with the trash bin 14900KS I returned to them because it was rubbish.

I don't use it anyhow. No need for silly bloat like that IMHO. I felt the same way about GeFarts Experience and do not install it. There is nothing I can identify to suggest a good reason for me to install the new NVIDIA App or GeFarts Experience. I am very sad with the thought that the no-nonsense legacy NVIDIA Control Panel will be going away. It's going to suck having to install the App trash
