No, being very serious. I just spent $2,200 on a new laptop for work. I had a max budget of $3,000 dollars for a RTX5090. I’m using the rest of my funds to finish out my Lian Li V3000+ Plus case build. I’d have to sell my 4090 now, and that’s a silly move for a potential pipe dream. 
 

I don’t mind waiting now. I drained my enthusiasm and really wasted too much time on the 5090. 
 

I was in a corporate meeting once and got some BB alerts and was like “One moment” 🤣 the addiction and want was strong. So I gotta let go.

TechPowerUp has discovered that there are NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 graphics cards in retail circulation that come with too few render units, which lowers performance. Zotac's GeForce RTX 5090 Solid comes with fewer ROPs than it should—168 are enabled, instead of the 176 that are part of the RTX 5090 specifications. This loss of 8 ROPs has a small, but noticeable impact on performance. During recent testing, we noticed our Zotac RTX 5090 Solid sample underperformed slightly, falling behind even the NVIDIA RTX 5090 Founders Edition card. At the time we didn't pay attention to the ROP count that TechPowerUp GPU-Z was reporting, and instead spent time looking for other reasons, like clocks, power, cooling, etc.

Nvidia have a lot work foreards with their brand new tech.... And it seems worse than ever. Shortage is only a small part of this awful release.

We are starting to see more and more issues that suggest the 50 series was rushed and released prematurely, and some of these problems are unforgivable.

The 5080 pricing, although too high, would be in line with 4090 pricing. The problem is that 5080 is a downgrade from 4090 performance and specs, while priced roughly the same. The price of 5090 is just unacceptable by every measurement on face value. It's only a minor upgrade over 4090 with an absolutely absurd $1,000+ premium attached to it. Paying a ton of extra money for a small upgrade is a price to value disparity that makes no sense for anyone that has any sense.

When you step back and look at everything it is totally ridiculous. Beyond not being exciting, I think it is something everyone should be very unhappy or even angry about it. It is blantant shafting to be totally blunt about it. There is no way in hell it costs such a substantially higher amount than a 5080 to manufacture a 5090. Certainly not $800 - $1500 more depending on what brand of crookedness is your favorite. As you make your way down the product stack to the mundane options like 5070 Ti price to value proposition does not improve. Anyone that doesn't see this as getting screwed over royally just isn't playing with a full deck or they are such a fanboy that they have lost their ability to think rationally and objectively. The problem is bigger than simple greed. It is a deliberately crafted scam that can only be viewed as an ethical failure.

Blackwell is what Arrow Lake was for Intel. Nvidia  just follow the same trend. QC cost money. Better rush the harware out before proper testing. Nvidia's main focus is on AI. Not gaming products or gamers.

It really is terrible right now. I also have not paid a lot of attention, but started looking closer after seeing some of the drama around 50-series and it's really bad. I think it has actually gotten worse since launch and the few people that were able to buy a 5090 or 5080 at the "expected" price still got treated wrong with reliability and functionality problems, but now the prices seem to have skyrocketed to even higher levels of unreasonableness. And, no... I absolutely do not believe that tariffs are increasing the prices by 50% or more. I do believe that the tariffs are being used as an excuse to gouge consumers and increase profits in an unethical manner. They would be doing the same thing in the absense of tariffs. If these companies were honest they would show the prices before tariffs are added and be accountable for the amount they are trying to tack on for the actual tariffs. Do I think that inventory was held back to create artificial demand and allow them to use tariffs as a lame excuse to justify exhorbitant predator pricing? Yes, I do. They're all scum. And, the scummy price gouging is not exclusively 50-series. It's everything across the board now totally out of control and getting progressively worse over the past year. We saw if first with necessities like food and other things that have nothing whatsoever to do with tariffs, Trump or Elon. The only products priced to value are the things most people don't want or need, so they have priced the trash to sell.

You and I will have to disagree about Elon. We are good friends, so that is totally fine. We do not have to agree on everything. Musk is one of the rare business executives with his head screwed on straight. Some of the models were priced not as bad, but the other ones are ridiculous. The Astral for $1600+? No....

 

If you're into DLSS and FG for your games and fps rule the roost, the 5080 is the superior card. If you're into content creation and rely on the updated encoders/decoders for the 5000 series, you're caught in a weird spot. Superior encoders/decoders vs 50% more memory (of course the 5090 satisfies both with aplomb) Sad but true even with 16GB of memory. I'm not into either as a defining factor, so anything >$1000 for a 5080 is simply unacceptable because of the 4090. 

 

If I'm going to spend ~$1500 on a 5080, I'm going to wait and snag a used 4090, period.

 

Assuming you snag a 5080 at $999.99, 8GB of memory and slightly faster (or more depending on game) does not justify 50% or higher price especially as of now it is no longer the top dog out there. 4090 is now officially a 5080ti with none of the new blackwell tech.

The uplift isn't "bad" but the price is just insanely high over an already insanely high priced 4090 and is now closer to $5k than zero.

 

As for gamers, hopefully a wall is hit and after the initial rush of those where price is no object, the market corrects again like it did with the 4080. The 4080->4080 Super shows it can be done plus you have AMD yet again with a 9070xt which may force Nvidia to price correct down with the 5070ti and lower and maybe even the 5080 sooner than later.

 

Unfortunately, there is no answer for the 5090 superiority.

This has been the reality the last three cycles but especially bad this cycle. Demand will always exist at all times at various levels and when supply suddenly evaporates, prices skyrocket even for older models.

 

Watching 7900xtx cards go from being priced at close to $900 even upper end models like the Nitro+ and Taichi suddenly skyrocket in price to $1300-1400+ was crazy along with 4000 series cards but it will normalize.

 

The one thing to take from this is there is a 2-5 month window on average where if you're going to sell then sell and limp by on a filler card while you wait and reap the financial awards. OR choose to keep your card till you can replace it with a better card and suffer the financial loss as a result if valid.

The uplift in overall performance and especially in 1% on some games is absolutely banger with the 5090 vs 4090 approaching 50%+

 

5090 is definitely a beastly upgrade across the board vs the 4090 but again pricing and availability at launch are horrific.

 

It pushes the 4090 definitely much closer to the 5080 than the 5090 in performance.

The lack of new cards, EOL of older cards and market conditions are at their worst atm. 9070xt launching soon (I will assume AMD has been bolstering stock on top of initial stock) and Nvidia ramping up production will ease demand accordingly.

 

A year from now we will revisit this.....

 

Tariffs are a factor of course but they don't really factor in atm because of insane demand for, well,everything atm.

 

What is consistent is the constant outlandish MSRP increases from Nvidia which serves as the anchor pricing upon which all the other factors come into play producing absolutely outlandish costs and availability at launch.

 

Looking at ebay and StockX, prices are starting to come down already.

 

Here is an example of a garbage tactic from an ebayer trying to imply he sold 24 5090 FEs at anywhere near this pricing. Newsflash, he did not.

 

The trick is to set an initial quantity sale to 25 then reduce stock to 1. For some reason, eBay will show the others as sold so you get the impression the seller only has one left in stock.

 

I've been following a few 5090 FEs and watched them start at 6k+, then in the 5k+ range and now in the 4k+ range from established sellers clearly with product in hand.

 

Everything is moving as expected.

here the PSU cable plug, original seasonic that came with my TX-1600 (ATX 2.4 version) and terminating in 2x8pins on the PSU side.

all is well it seems. dont mind the slight discoloration in the upper left corner of the socket, thats actually just a bit of dust (yeah my case needs a bit of cleaning 😄) i think in total ive unplugged this cable maybe twice now....? so "should" be good to be used for a third time, which will likely be its last until i get my hands on a 5090.
