We just get two 5090’s for that. Double the GPU! Double the melting fun! 😂

Biggest bummer if what I read is correct, you have to plug your monitors into the GPU handling the frame generation. Not sure if my 3090ti can do 4k120hz without DSC. So not sure if it's worth the hassle of testing.

Definitely an interesting software though probably pick it up.

Is that the same thing as when you minimize a game and  it has to regain signal?, and it’s not an immediate response? It was like that with 4080/4090’s that couldn’t handle it. Every-time I would press the windows button in a game, the monitor would go black and have to regain signal again then It would finally reveal the desktop. Fortunately they fixed it with the 5090! Pressing windows button is immediate. My 3090 didn’t have the issue either. It was a pain with 4000 gen.

PS: Last week I refreshed my GPU’s pads and TIM, re-surfaced the block real nice!

And if you can't afford it, then Jensen will help you out. And no more melting connectors if you chose right. The old will be the new gold for gamers.

And Gigabyte... Their new top of the line flagship model is built around the same stupid FE PCB design. How innovative is that?

More unpleasant SKU design will only help increase the price hike for models you would prefer to buy. There is a huge load of people that wish to cram slimy high power cards into cute small SFF builds that help keep their homes cosy, hot and warm in the winters. Sadly they forgot there is also something called summer seasons every year. May I smella new round with melted cards due heat and custom cables to be able to use  the cards in the tiny boxes.

GeForce RTX 50 SUPER series seems out the window for now... Hence new stupid design choices for the 5000 series cards. And cuttting costs won't help the buyers.

So what’s the issue with the actual board though?

Performance wise I just wish I could do is flash my bios. The bios holds me back. And it’s not all that much.

I could care less if the board was 40 pieces lol. It’s a 5090. It performs.

The idiotic multi-component design with the daughterboard I/O and PCIe X16 connector is totally crap and so is the compact PCB. Everything is crammed together and plastered with that silly glue mask that NVIDIA uses to make SMD repairs more difficult. Would not touch it with a 10-foot pole, even if it was only like $1200. Designed to fail and no service parts. That's the NVIDIA way of screwing their customers. It would only be useful to move the core and RAM modules over to a donor PCB that is not designed in such an idiotic way. You have to also think about how you got shafted on the firmware lock. All of it was nefariously planned and premeditated to benefit NVIDIA and screw everyone that purchased a Founders Edition GPU. Not the kind of business that deserves any of our money. NVIDIA is as crooked as they come, and it is more obvious now than ever before with how they are handling things.

Asus Z890 Apex arrived a day early.

Brand new

Box damage

Had the original launch (August 2024) 503 BIOS on it

.....here's hoping to a decent board or back it goes....

Flashing it to the newest BIOS as I type then off to the races. I already boxed up the Z890 Strix but for a board that tops out at 8667, it isn't bad especially for the price but still Asus advertised it as supporting 9066 memory...

If my pictures look different, I recently switched from using my iphone to a shiny new Canon Powershot V1, so I'm still getting the hang of it while I make the transition from my iphone to it and a GoPro  Max 2 for all my shooting adventures going forward.

The WireView Pro II is pretty impressive, but I've come to expect only the best from Brother @der8auer at this point. So, I am pleased but not surprised.

It is interesting seeing how unreliable and sketchy the 12V-2x6 connector actually is. What you could never see without the WireView Pro II becomes abundantly clear. My PSU is a Lian Li Edge 1300W that has a light blue connector and none of the plastic fingers showed any evidence of overheating when I installed the WireView Pro II. The connector still looks like brand new.

I have been messing with it today and you can gently bump the wiring/connector and cause pin current imbalance. This triggers an alarm to you can remedy the situation before damage occurs. I have been able to both induce and remedy the current imbalance problem by simply tapping on the wiring or WireView Pro II with my finger. Seeing this makes it easy to understand how user error is very likely not a common factor with the melted connectors. I am running the stock Zotac 600W vBIOS for normal daily use and with the shunt mod if I reduce the power limit to 65-70% with Afterburner it shows my peak power between 600-620W.

I am going to order another one for my 4090 pretty soon. I'm sure it is equally sketchy. The 12VHPWR connector is truly a joke and NVIDIA deserves to be crucified for pushing this abortion as a new standard.

Tiny, finicky, connector + users treating it like a dodge ball = recipe for failure. More failures of course for the dodge ball players.

Definitely can't wait to get mine if not for the D2D warranty than real external hardware pin monitoring. It really does remove the last useful thing from the Astral. The auto shut off is a nice peace of mind functionality and the beta software is only going to get better.

I am very curious to see how the MSI yellow dragon flame edition is actually balanced....

What a failure. Band aid fix for something that should be fixed by nvidia before they release new gen graphics cards.

And Nvidia.... Nothing is wrong🙄 Stupids!

psu-20260105-3.jpg

I expect next gen graphics cards will get same/similar band aid fix. Warning (beeps from a buzzer on the gpu), then shutdown a couple of minutes after). The tiny connector will introduce more expensive graphics cards. We already see it with the Astral and the per pin monitoring feature. Come on.... Make a connector that just works. No more band aid fixes.

Introducing GPU Safeguard+: Advanced GPU Protection on MSI Next-Gen Power Supplies

The RTX 5090 Matrix is available for €5999 at Infomax!

Now, we know that graphics card prices are rising due to the current chaos in the memory sector. However, when you consider that LDLC was already selling this model for €4399 in November , seeing it now at €6000 is painfully ironic.

I guess PSU makers now realize this connector is here to stay and it makes sense to add protection mechanisms AND provide another reason for consumers to purchase yet another PSU.....$$$

As for the Matrix, I said it on launch day it was available on the US Asus website for pre-order for well over 6hrs as I kept checking and it finally went out of stock so it wasn't like they sold out in a flash here because consumers realized the $4k cost was insane for that. I had it in my basket and at the "click to order" state each time to verify.

NVIDIA won't "need" consumers until the AI bubble breaks. I hope they suffer record-breaking financial losses, all of their wealth ends up being erased and they end up filing bankruptcy.

I wonder if you could designate the second core for Lossless Scaling and essentially function the same as two GPUs? @Clamibot?

You should be able to assign the second core to Lossless Scaling as long as Windows sees the GPU as 2 GPUs, which I image it does. This reminds me of the GTX 690, as that was a dual GPU board as well. Now we have a new version of that from Intel which is awesome.

Biggest bummer if what I read is correct, you have to plug your monitors into the GPU handling the frame generation. Not sure if my 3090ti can do 4k120hz without DSC. So not sure if it's worth the hassle of testing.

Definitely an interesting software though probably pick it up.

That is correct. Your monitors should be plugged into the framegen GPU as plugging them into the render GPU will invoke a double readback, which will destroy performance and increase latency.

That’s really funny! Hopefully the video is useful as it covers everything I learned with LGA1700 and DDR5 overclocking. For 8800 Gear 2, I would probably use a 40-54-54-54 as an easy starting point, and 32k tREFI. Those rams were on chilled water and 262k tREFI is heavy with heat and also very temp sensitive so it’s a double edged sword, and 1.620v VDD/VDDQ is also kinda heavy with heat. 😂 it actually didn’t need that much, and I was able to dial it back. But that was its first boot, and just typed in something crazy and it seemed to just scoff at it, which was why I made the video.

I’m really unfamiliar with Z890 IMC strength. But very curious to try the platform out with maybe something cheaper like a 245/265k.

So, it's not just GPUs, RAM and AI driven nonsense that is causing PC tech to be circling the drain.

Winduhz 11 customer satisfaction rating is now lower than even Windows ME and Vista, and the dissatisfaction is driven by Fortune 500 companies.

No, my surprised look is not on my face. It's a digital dumpster fire. I'm glad I started grooming my relationship with Linux a long time ago. Windoze sucks and it's getting suckier with each update.

This guy is a good example of a technology normie that has had a gut full of Micro$lop feces. His YouTube channel is not even a tech-focused channel, but he's fed up with the stupid crap. He thinks Linux sucks, but he is still making the move in spite of that.

Latency shouldn't be a problem. If gamers are forced to play in the cloud forwards it doesn't really matter anyway.

It's click bait. It's not in stock when you try to add it to a cart and the only place you can buy one from the links at ASUS US Store is Central Computers for $2800. All other vendors show it as unavailable.

LOL. So the buy and notify me message is  the same. I have seen people said no stock even if it say BUY. Nice, click the buy button then come to notify me "out of stock". Disgusting.

What stands CES for? Electronic for corporate?🤐 Why did nvidia bother with CES? To promote new AI chips/servers for business.

AMD could also have stayed away from CES this year.

Yeah, trying to push higher and heat is my main enemy now. They hit 70c+ and things get very precarious with these heatsinks especially on the Vengeance 9200. Anything 8800+ even with lower tREFI is pushing the temps 60 70c+. I will be pulling out a case fan to put on top for some more testing sooner than later at this point.

Apex does come with a ram heat fan thingy though so that's something....

You could always pick up a dirt cheap 265k and a board to play around with. I'm going to assume you have DDR5 on the shelf and didn't sell it off with your 1700 rig.

Well, while you're there on Asus's website, you might as well click the notify me on the Matrix 5090 'cause I know you want one @Papusan 🤣

CES was just AI fest.  My favorite was Jufus's take of AMD's booth:

The name of the event is no longer fitting. It needs to be renamed AEC or ACS for Anti-consumer Electronics Show or Anti-Consumer Show since it has less to do with electronics due to the irrational focus on AI and nothing to do with consumers other than us funding this stupid $hit.

Jufes should use some of the money from his Discord subscribers to purchase a spelling course. His vocabulary  isn't the only thing that could use some work.
