MSI Afterburner developer Alexey “Unwinder” Nicolaychuk explained that he cannot add RTX 50 hotspot monitoring directly to Afterburner for legal and marketing reasons. MSI Afterburner is official NVIDIA partner-branded software, so its monitoring features must rely on sensors exposed through NVIDIA’s supported NVAPI interfaces.

 

Due to some weird reasons NVIDIA still keeps VRAM/hotspot temperature monitoring interfaces for private internal NV software only, they are not open even to partners making NVIDIA bases graphics cards. Every single currently existing tool displaying VRAM/hotspot temperatgure on NVIDIA side rely on reverse engineered private NVAPI interfaces (or even direct GPU access in case of RTX 5000 cards), which doesn’t make green GPU vendor too happy.

RTX 50 hotspot data is hidden from NVAPI and can only be accessed through direct GPU register reads, while earlier hotspot and VRAM readings used reverse-engineered private interfaces. Unwinder can demonstrate this access through his independent RivaTuner Statistics Server project, but he cannot include an unofficial implementation in MSI Afterburner unless NVIDIA adds the sensor to its public API. Use this new version of the .dll I've added Hotspot Delta which is the delta between the coldest and hottest sensor. So now you'll get not only the hottest hotspot, but the delta between the 6 sensors.

I have followed the instructions in the PDF but I do not see the sensor in the Monitoring tab in Afterburner.

 

Edit: I uninstalled Afterburner and started again from scratch, followed all of the instructions precisely and still no new HotSpot sensor(s). Do I need to be using an obscure version of Afterburner? I am using the latest I can find for download on Guru3d.

Given my amazing results with liquid metal on the CPU in my other systems, I decided to go ahead and repaste my Alienware 17 R1 with liquid metal. Man, it runs even better than it did when new! As predicted, it significantly increased my thermal headroom, which increased my indefinite sustained power envelope from 55w to greater than 75w. I haven't tried pushing it yet, so I don't know the actual limit yet, but this is exciting. Having the Chichen upgraded heatsinks for this laptop also helps a lot.

 

Perhaps I can beat my previous winter benchmarks at 4.1 GHz all core and do that during the summer now, plus more. It's crazy that a 13 year old laptop is still useful for a lot of things even today.

 

Backstory: since my memory requirements have increased due to my development workflow, I needed more RAM but didn't want to buy any, so I opted to instead reuse old hardware, and thus bring my Alien back into daily service. I'm offloading lighter tasks to it that I know it can handle, as ultimately I needed to unload web browsing from my desktop onto my Alien instead, freeing up 12+ GB of RAM for making builds of the games I develop (yeah I have lots of tabs open). Easy reuse of the 32 GB of RAM in my Alien.

 

I think it enjoys being out of retirement. I missed it too.

Did you import the sensor?

 

Under monitoring tab, go to "Active Hardware Monitoring Graphs" -- the ... at the right of that. 

Checkmark on the BlackwellHotspot.dll and hit Ok then Apply. 

 

You will then have both GPU 1 Hotspot Temperature and GPU 1 Hotspot Delta at the bottom of the monitoring tab. Might need to restart Afterburner to get to populate after you enable the .dll

The dll is show there. I did not know I needed to look on that page. If I add a checkmark to the dll in that page Afterburner will not launch.

[Settings] LowLevelMonitoring=0

 

 

Otherwise it will fail to launch. 

 

Edit: Also to answer your earlier question, just the normal latest Beta 3 MSI Afterburner works with this. I've tested it on both my RTX 5090 D and RTX 5070 Prime systems. Another user on OCN.net reported it working too. 

 

Sorry the instructions are just way to complicated and non-sensical. I will go back and have the robot make a clean and simple PDF. Way too much fluff.

For some reason your HotSpot.dll is only 6kb and mine is 7kb (actual size is 6.5kb). Something might be wrong there.

I deleted the profile and force Afterburner to create a new one and edited this time. Now it is working. However, it does not work if I do not add a checkmark to the pluging to make it active. Something wrong with the profile must have kept it from launching with the dll enabled.

The checkmark is required to make it work, will update that in a new simple guide. Sorry that needs to be added and clarified.

After it began working the dll file changed from 6kb to 7kb somehow. Weird stuff. But, it is working now.

I was seeing around 10-13c Hotspot Delta, with a spike to 17-18c in transients but they were rare.

I tried it on my 5080 and it is not working even after enabling the DLL. The hardware ID should be G1B3     = 2C02h (forgot to add the h)

 

Maybe there is something different needed in the DLL for 5080.

 

Correction: also working on the 5080. I forgot to add the "h" after 2C02 for the HWID.

Got the overlays set up... Using CPUSetSetter for the 270K and the 4585PX to specify P-cores and Cached CCD utilization. You can create profiles and switch on the fly for both Intel and AMD using hotkeys.

 

So, for example in Fire Strike, you want to use only P-cores or only the 3D V-Cache for GPU tests but on the Physics and Combined Test use all cores, just punch the hotkey.

 

For gaming you can instantly see which is better in realtime because your GPU framerate will go up or down, depending on which works best for the game.

 

Also have the WireView Pro II critical metrics showing.
