I used the 7800 XT GPU swap as a teaching moment to show junior some of the finer points of PC building. I think it turned out pretty well, at least on the hardware side. Software was a bit of a mess, but I attribute this to the s****y nature of As(s)us' and AS(s)Rock's control suites. A motherboard BIOS update followed by a clean Windows reinstall appears to be working for now, unfortunately at the expense of Asus AISuite no longer being functional. Fortunately, said BIOS update seems to have fixed the ability to set the fan curves to my liking there without needing to rely on software.

The 7800 XT runs extremely quiet, with probably the least amount of coil whine I've ever heard from a GPU that has similar or higher power draw. It passed the 3DMark stress test with flying colors, not exceeding 70C according to the software. I'll need to reinstall all my games, but so far so good.

As an added bonus, despite purchasing the GPU open box, I still got a code for a free copy of FarCry 7, aka Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.

That brings back some good memories of when my boys were in that age range and I was teaching them the ropes on PC stuff. Moments like this are priceless. They'll last a lifetime.

That looks like a pretty unique aesthetic on the GPU, especially the backplate. I cannot tell exactly how it is made from your photos, but the lip that drops down over the outside edge of the heat sink radiator toward the fan shroud should make for a very nicely rigid and strong design. Does it attach to the I/O bracket as well? (That would dramatically reduce or eliminate GPU sag if it does.)

You're expecting a company like ASRock to put actual forethought into their designs LOL. Based on the promo pics, I think it's just for show.

@electrosoft you seem pretty tech savvy with picking up launch day toys @Talonyou as well. What do you think your chances would be at getting a 4080 Super on Launch day? Or at least ordering one on launch day? From maybe Bestbuy or Nvidia? I keep hearing people say that bots are the only way. Is this true?

I do not think it is going to be a FFA like the 4090 was at launch, unless you are specifically looking for a Founder's edition. Based off all of the articles I've read, a good amount of scalpers ordered 4070 Supers, then ended up cancelling their orders. There was plenty to go around.

While there is a chance of the 4080 Supers selling out, I think you are going have time to pick the model you want. Most of the consumers that wanted a high end card got a 4090. There will always be the AIB OC cards that are going to be priced 100 to 250 above MSRP that will largely be ignored...cough Asus Strix cough.

Well I have a serious hardware problem. I need rehab.

I have a 4070 Super FE, 4070 Ti Super arrived today (early) and I think I'll grab a 4080 Super FE because why not. I'll keep one and sell the rest. But more toys to play with vs one single 4090 FE.

Wait, How'd you even purchase a Ti Super early? I thought orders started on Wednesday?

I think you'll have a good shot. I woke up early to get me 4070S Dual and they haven't even sold out almost a week later... I know no one cares for the 4070S but I think most people who needed a card have a card now. It's not like a new generation launch where it makes a lot of sense to hold out for.

Don't the FE GPUs have only one vBIOS? I've always thought they kind of suck overall for a couple of reasons, like that one and having a complicated disassembly process and crappy thermal solution.

I don't think that this is a curable problem unless you just go cold turkey and lock yourself in a closet with no internet access or awareness of the world around you. It's pretty messed up and seems like we like having the sickness too much to want to be right again.

If you're fine with any model, just be up in the morning and you will definitely get one. Don't go for expensive garbage (I'm looking at you Asus). Just grab a decent $999.99 model. 4070 Supers never sold out on Best Buy outside of the FE and maybe one other model. They've been available since day 1.

If you want the FE? Definitely be up and ready and maybe keep track of a stock watch page.

Make sure to go Best Buy so if you find it isn't worth the cost vs your 3090 (assuming you haven't sold it) you can still return it.

Was available online last Friday at a retailer I use regularly, I bought it and it arrived this morning from FedEx 😀

Honestly I was pretty shocked when I saw the "shipped" and a FedEx tracking # arrive in my email so quickly. That said, even with modded INF driver, the card runs essentially in a low usage state until official driver support arrives for gaming. But for creators and professional use, the card runs full tilt and produces normal performance. It's very odd, anyone have any ideas on how to bypass this limitation? I can run games/benchmarks but they run hella slow or produce less than half the expected result.

I modded the setup file for the latest driver, disabled driver enforcement and installed without issue. But like I said, it won't run properly in games. It shows up fine in device manager, NVControl panel all works properly, even g-sync and pendulum test. Production tasks work and render fine, but gaming or 3D benchmark loads seem to be the issue.

agreed, im also not a big fan of founders editions cards. i get the appeal in terms of pricing at MSRP (if you buy from BB or directly from Nvidia online) and not getting a total bottom of the barrel AIB card at MSRP, but aside from that i think most users online praising FE cards to high heaven completely exaggerate.

wouldnt surprise me if this was put in place by Nvidia to discourage any "early bird" reviewers from breaking their NDA (or ruining the show for others if they havent signed any)

So it looks like the 4070 Ti super is a dud. Not worth it over the 4070 TI.

Quote

Averaged over the 25 games in our test suite, at 1440p, we find the card only 7% faster than RTX 4070 Ti non-Super, which is much less than expected. At 4K, the gains are slightly bigger with 10%, but it's definitely not the 15%+ jump that we got with the RTX 4070 Super. Still, these gains help make up ground against AMD's RX 7900 XT, which still remains 3% faster in a pure raster scenario. Compared to last generation's flagship, the RTX 3090 Ti, the new Super card can beat it by a small margin of 4%, which is still impressive. You're basically getting last gen's x90 Ti performance with the x70 Ti Super. Compared to RTX 4070 Super, the performance uplift is 14% and the new card is 33% faster than the RTX 4070 non-Ti non-Super, too. The fastest card from Team Red, the Radeon RX 7900 XTX, is still 17% ahead, 21% at 4K—RTX 4080 Super is designed to rival this card.

welp, nothing burger. with each new GPU release im getting happier that i got the 4090 on launch day 😄

i just finished Control ultimate edition and now starting with the Alan Wake series, since its in the same fictional universe. so i started with alan wake 1 remastered and noticed that gpu oc doesnt bring any performance improvements. so now im running my card at -250 on the vRAM, -1000 on the core and 6% power limit. everything maxxed out, including the game engine, apparently its not capable to delivering more than like 70-100 fps LOL. in any case, the 4090 is humming along at 150W with temps in the 30s LOL. also got my 7950X capped to the minimum 2.4-2.5 Ghz on all cores with max. core parking enabled. id call that a pretty frugal gaming experience, power consumption wise 😄 still, im amazed at how good the graphics look!

Yeah Alan Wake is nice but man the whole Universe is like a David Lynch Movie. I get Twin Peaks vibes from it. Only played the first one and Control i started it but didnt played it long.

It seems like everything relating to PC tech is just getting dumbed down now. It's both pathetic and annoying.  I can hardly wait to see what kind of life-altering decisions the pea-brained goombahs at the top of the technology food chain are going to delegate to AI.

While I own AW, I never actually played it. Instead just watched a let's play, which was more than enough. I did play Control when it was released on Xbox Game Pass. Played it a bit less than half through way before getting bored. I did go back and try it with the "one shot kill" option enabled, which made it fun for a little while longer, but it still couldn't keep me engaged enough to see it through until the end.

The 4070 Ti Super looks like a pretty big disappointment. The 7900 XT appears to outperform it in most straight rasterization tests. Despite the AMD card's MSRP being $100 more, right now it can be purchased for $50 less. This makes my 7800 XT purchase look even better: It's about 20-25 percent slower but only cost slightly more than 50 percent as much. NVIDIA must be using the worst of the worst 4080 silicon to make the 4070 Ti Super.

Hardware Unboxed video is completely scuffed. Wrong SPECs for card in the video? They also used the MSI Ventus card with a bunked vBIOS, even after being told it had a faulty vBIOS. Instead of redoing the video with updated vBIOS or using a different card, they went with the screwed card and claimed it's only 1%. That isn't even close to true. You can see this in by looking at TPU which published a lot of 4070 Ti Super card reviews and it's clear, the MSI is on average 6-7% slower across the board vs other brand 4070 Ti Super cards.

Hard to disagree. For starters: why are all those cards voltage and power limited? If someone has a good WC rig, they should be able to risk accept a possible loss of warranty and push the performance. In fact, manufacturers would ideally test OC and provide guidelines on this to help people enjoy their OCed rigs.

Why are they not doing that? A few reasons:

1. Bad for business - look at @tps3443 who was able to run his 3090 way past the specs for years. Same reason NGreedia killed SLI: to prevent people from being able to scale up their systems on the cheap

2. Insufficient competition - enough has been said here on this, other than the crowding into NVidia camp is just making this worse. I imagine NVidia holds some patents around SLI, which would explain why neither AMD nor Intel have opted to attack from that angle

3. A possibly underhand concern for energy efficiency - I don’t think Jensen&co are worried about the environment, all they care about is the fact that more demand for electricity causes increased energy prices which in turn hurts the AI market and their main business now.

4. And yes, the general AI craze has lead to the manufacturers scrambling to focus on that sector, everything else has to take the back seat

All or those concerns would be greatly diminished if people were able to take a coordinated action to address them, instead of acting myopically.

Got my 4070 Ti Super working. Severely power limited at 280w default. It's sitting right at 280w and core throttling. Time to flash it.

Honestly I don't want them know my discovery and their oversight lol. 🤠

I'll gladly share it with you privately but not sure how much use it would be. Actually might be useful for those running custom situations.
