Has anybody already activated Optimus and checked out how much battery life improves?

I am planning to possibly have a quick look this week after updating the bios on mine but it would be cool to hear from other members.

Also is there any way to use the 4th SSD slot with a 10900K?

It is really annoying to lose one SSD slot but I am not interested in downgrading from 10 to 8 cores.

how do i undervolt on this?

You can use Intel XTU or Throttlestop to undervolt. I personally prefer XTU. If you use XTU, all you have to do is adjust the Core Voltage Offset slider.

I thought the 4th SSD slot was still useable with a Comet Lake CPU, the only caveat being that you'd have to run the 4th SSD in SATA mode.

Will have to check with the new unlocked firmware but when I tried with the old locked firmware it wasn't possible.

4th M.2 slot is directly attached to CPU so only NVME and only 11th gen CPU in order to activate it.

Why is physics score so low? Even my 10 year old m18x r2 beats both gpu/cpu scores.

my bga x14 gets 25k cpu on auto fans and that’s with thermal throttle lol

and rtx 4090 mobile (around desktop rtx 3090 ti performance possibly)

X170 series is last Clevo with LGA/MXM combo

Area-51m R2 is last AW with LGA/DGFF

18 R1/M18xR2 last 18.4” with lga mobile cpu/mxm 3.0b

now we are soldered only in 2023

Yes, if it really comes out, it will be a good sequel even purely because of the 18-inch screen.

Kudos for Clevo making an Intel A770M based laptop. Intel continues to work their way into the market and it is nice to see. Still BGA....

The harsh realities of the market. We all saw the slow march of death on socketable CPU/GPU laptops. We're now in phase two where we not only have run out of socket enabled laptops but even BGA laptops are getting soldered Ram, storage and even Wifi in some cases. It's pretty disgusting.

The X18 might be something I'd consider even in BGA form because the market is not going to reverse and as much as we might complain companies only go where the money is and there is large consumer interest and that is no longer large, heavy clunky laptops with interchangeable components.

As much as I love my X170SM-G with 10900k, it is being outclassed CPU wise by my throw away GL66 12700h both single and multi. This last generation of GPUs (3080ti) didn't really offer much in overall performance gains vs the 2080 Super in there but the 4000 series mobile chips are going to be monsters and a clear and powerful upgrade over the 2000 and 3000 series chips. Throw in 13th gen CPUs too? There aren't enough after market upgrades to drag the X170, Area-51m or M18 R1/2/3 anywhere near their performance.

But I still prefer to get under the hood and hand pick all my components and fine tune them (hardware and software) but that is becoming harder and harder to do. 😞

How the mighty have fallen...

I would rather get an MSI GE77HX instead or the big Tongfang with watercooling.

X170 was king of the hill, this is just another middling laptop with a 12700H, 2 memory sticks and 2 SSDs. I hope that Intel paid them well and that in exchange they can release another socketed model in the next generation - then it would be worth it 🙂

OK guys, I would like to bring my X170KM-G up to speed and try the special bios that allows me to enable Optimus.

Currently EC and Bios are both 1.07.01  and I was thinking to first update to EC1.07.04 and the regular Bios 1.07.08 and then in the next step to the unlocked bios that has thankfully been provided by brother @ViktorV

Any obvious issues with that or some in between steps that I might be missing?

No idea how much it will help with better battery life but I am going to find out 🙂

optimus should help but if you turn on iGPU only then it’ll definitely make a difference

Ah damn, RIP. My SM comes Tuesday.

optimus should help but if you turn on iGPU only then it’ll definitely make a difference

Not sure I will be able to do iGPU only but that would be cool.

An iGPU only mode is a nice feature on the Alienware 18 and several MSI units I had/have.

Kudos for Clevo making an Intel A770M based laptop. Intel continues to work their way into the market and it is nice to see. Still BGA....

I have no issue with Clevo releasing the usual BGA books that everybody else does these days but releasing such a run of the mill design and give it the name X270 is at least misleading.

The harsh realities of the market. We all saw the slow march of death on socketable CPU/GPU laptops. We're now in phase two where we not only have run out of socket enabled laptops but even BGA laptops are getting soldered Ram, storage and even Wifi in some cases. It's pretty disgusting.

The X18 might be something I'd consider even in BGA form because the market is not going to reverse and as much as we might complain companies only go where the money is and their is large consumer interest and that is no longer large, heavy clunky laptops with interchangeable components.

Getting under the hood will only be for swapping memory and storage these days and maybe you'll be lucky to be able to upgrade your wifi card. Sad state of affairs.

Still 18" and 13900HX is exciting, much more so than graphics that seem to be on track to give us approximately the stock performance of last gens 3080 desktop cards.

Stock performance of 3090 desktop for now. 😉  rtx 4090 mobile will be 175w limited and it has 16gb vram based on ad103. Most likely it’ll be a 16gb 4080 with lower clocks

we’ll see next year what the exact performance they are able to extra from N21

Alienware m18             : Intel Core i9 13900HX @ 5.0Ghz | nVidia GeForce RTX 4090    | K1675 | 2x1TB SSDs

Alienware Area-51M : Intel Core i9-9900K @ 5.3Ghz    | nVidia GeForce RTX 2080    | AX210 | Samsung 970 Evo+
Alienware M18x R2 :    Intel Core i7 3920XM @ 4.7Ghz | nVidia Quadro RTX 5000     | AX210 | Samsung 980 PRO
Alienware 18 :              Intel Core i7 4930MX @ 4.5Ghz  | nVidia Quadro RTX 3000  | AX210 | Samsung 980 NVMe

More Laps: M14x (555m) | M14xR2 (650m) | M15x (980m) | M17xR3 (880m) | M18xR1 (RTX 5000)

BEAST Server:          Intel Xeon W7-3465X 28 P-Cores | nVidia Titan V | 128GB RDIMM | Intel Optane P5800X

Well you can hope for that but the early leaks indicate a 17300 TimeSpy score for the 4080ti mobile - hope they will not be stupid enough to call it 4090 mobile. As you know one can easily do 17500 with a stock desktop 3080:

Edit:

New leak from a Romanian site seems to indicate that the top tier will be indeed named 4090 which imo is a joke as the desktop card is by now about twice as fast in stock condition. The sweet spot seems to be the 4070 which is about 12% slower and costs about 35% less, at least in that HP Omen model:

We know since October there will be a RTX 4090 Mobile. Have patience we will see the performance soon 😉
