HOW DO I UPDATE TO A Nvidia GTX 1070

Hi, following this thread as I am trying to put a similar MSI 1070 in my M18x R2 and having trouble.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/175656538438

flashed unlocked A11 BIOS and switched to "SG"

it powers on for about 2 seconds then turns off.

It sounds like you've done exactly what you need to do. My guess is that there's an issue with that GPU but it's hard to know without testing it in person. So if you boot without the GPU installed it doesn't crash?

I wouldn't get a replacement, get a refund.

Better off getting ones of these:

P4000: https://ebay.us/QRgFn9

P5000: (I highly recommend "making an offer" on this one or wait for a cheaper one to appear. I saw one for 349 last month): https://ebay.us/DaKc4b

P4000 should give you 1060 performance

P5000 will give you around 1070 performance

Wow😲 thank you for the information!!! I've never heard of these cards before. Do my eyes deceive me, this is a 16GB card? The seller suggests it only works in an Dell Precision 7710/7720. Has anyone successfully installed this card into an R1?

My apologies, I wasn't clear in my response, as I was indeed referring to the P5000.  All of this is new to me. Where's the mind blown gif when you need it😂😂😂

That MSi 1070 is the one I used to have, worked really well.

Just need to make sure its not a G-sync card if my memory serves me correctly.

That's something. Failed to run the game is because the older drivers don't support it. But if you don't have any crashes with the older drivers, at least tells us that your GPU is ok in terms of hardware.

You said you got a heatsing from ebay. Your temps (assuming this is idle) are too hot. I always thought 1070 runs cooler than 980.

Use GPUz to see the temparature on the hot spot of the gpu. I use that when gaming to know when things are going downhill.

I will try a 1070 in the future, when price drops a bit to see if it will have any success.

Please post results if you have any regarding the process.

I believe you may have misquoted, I am not the one testing 1070 in the viking :)

Maybe not super helpful but contributing a lateral option by way of an anecdote: I blew up my MSI 1070 last year and decided to find another one  because I hate myself.

TL;DR they're a very rare commodity at this point (a lot of bad cards left on shelves - Eurocom turned over their stock for me trying to find one that worked and came up with _nothing_).

After several failures (including a bad card from Aliexpress) I went on my local Kijiji (Gumtree, craigslist, fb marketplace) and found someone selling a mostly unused MSI laptop that contained the card. Laptops that had the card include...

MSI GT73

MSI GT72

MSI GT63

MSI GT62

This way, you can see if the card at least works properly in the laptop it was intended for before attempting surgery.

I didn't bother flashing the vbios; I just... threw it in and it worked with the inf modded drivers i'd all ready rolled.

... and then I got to finish elden ring.

(btw: Normal temps with a beefed up GPU heatsink: 65-70c at gaming load. Furmark will take it to the moon though - if it's higher, something is wrong -- also be sure to mate the vrms to the heatsink with pads or k5: that was my mistake and why I suspect I only got a little less than 3 years out of mine)

...god I told myself I was done with nb forums post nbr... now it's 2023 and here we are.

Hey everyone! Just wanted to give you an update on my experiment 🧪 It seems like it didn't work out as planned 😕 I tried using two 1070 cards but unfortunately, no success there. I even reached out to someone who was selling the G4 Quadro P5000 16GB N17E-Q5-A1 Video card, and they suggested reselling it if it doesn't work for me.

Honestly, I've been stressing out over this and losing sleep 😫 So, I've decided to put my laptop up for sale. If anyone's interested, let me know! 🎉 I'm planning to use the funds to get myself an Area 51m r2 with a 2080. Super excited about that! 😄 Thank you all for your support and patience throughout this journey! You guys have been amazing in helping this noob out. 👍💪

Well, looks like life wants me to hold on to this ol' laptop a little longer. Thank you @ DreDre2022 for the updated i7 CPU👍. With that said here's my problem. I installed the CPU and now the laptop screen doesn't show the OS. I've triple checked every connected, and even reinstalled the original CPU, and the same result. What did I do wrong?

What exactly is it doing? Does it get to the BIOS splash screen? Is there just a black screen? Beep codes?

Its just a black screen. No beep codes. I've already took out the CMOS battery to attempt to reset the BIOS, same result. Tonight I'll remove the RAM to see what happens.

Does your system post with the original CPU you had?

I placed the original CPU back in the laptop, and still got the same black screen. I've decided to ship the laptop off to a repair shop to see if I can get it repaired with some upgrades.

Do you get the flashing cursor at the top left of the black screen or is there nothing? If it's just a plain black screen then it's probably GPU related but if you get the flashing cursor then it's probably the OS.

Yes you MUST have the Unlocked BIOS for the M18x R2 and the 18. The system has to be set to SG Mode (Switchable Graphics) and this option is not available with the OEM Dell BIOS.

The Reason:

These systems only run on two video modes. These are iGFX (Internal graphics) and PEG (Dedicated graphics). These are manually switched using the Function keys and a restart. The 10 series cards do not work in either of these modes with the 60hz LVDS display. They do work in PEG mode with the 120hz eDP display which is only in the 17" laptops.

SG mode is not a default option with the 18 as it does not work with the SLI or Crossfire configs that these systems had.

The Unlocked BIOS opens up a hidden Advanced tab in the BIOS which allows the video mode to be changed to SG mode.

The 10 series cards use SG mode to piggyback off the Intel graphics as they wouldn't be able to get a display on their own with the older LVDS style display. You MUST switch to SG mode before installing the new card or you will get the 8 beep LCD error and a black screen.

DO NOT try switching the video mode to any other mode that may be listed in the BIOS. I believe there is a 4th option but you can cause some big troubles if you try this mode. Once you have the card installed, if you use PEG mode then you'll get the 8 beep error. You can use iGFX mode but the dedicated card will be disabled until you switch back to SG.

In my case yesterday I switched to discrete gpu and my system now only produces the 8 beeps and no video. Hope that the mobo is not totally done for? i have a 1070 in R2

Have you removed the gpu yet? It can only operate under SG mode or PEG if you have an eDP panel
