Good Evening everyone!

The time has come to decide how we want to represent ourselves.

Thanks for being patient with us! :)

Chris

If we have a close call between 2 or more names then we will create another thread for the final contestants where arguments can be made for what you feel would be the best name for the forum.

2/23/2022 EDIT:

I have changed the header on the top of the page to reflect the new name.

Nothing else has changed at this time. Both Notebooktalk.net as well as EFGXT.net will continue to point here for quite some time and as mentioned by @joluke is already in service for when we make the change to the domain.

  • Reciever changed the title to Everyone, its time to decide our brand!

Even that i called this the forum without a name until now - out of the original three branches - the current one has a unique moniker to it and i have actually voted for this. Just let it be, it feels like something new and unburden by the past.
What i can't evaluate is, if it is more difficult to be found on search engines because of the unique name.

Are there still people without backups? At least every now and then? I get it, if people have issues with external cloud backups, but personal local backups are mandatory today.

Voted for "NoteBookTalk", though "Notebookrevival" is cool too, I like the idea of having a new name that is reminiscent of our old name.  And when considering "efgxt"...  That is a kind of cool name but I think that the name should indicate to newcomers what we are about.

Observations:

  • If we end up going with one of those, I think they should be stylized as "NotebookTalk" or "NotebookRevivial", matching the stylizing of "NotebookReview".
  • "Notebookrevivial.com" and "Notebookrevival.net" are so similar, if they end up splitting the vote and changing the outcome compared to what it would have been if just one of them were present, then maybe we should think about combining them for results purposes or having a runoff.  Same for efgxt.com/.net as well.  (Not an issue yet based on the current results.)

I prefer something that doesn't place a focus on notebooks or laptops in the name, so the first two options or Core-PC are my idea of better choices. I consider that a possible limiting factor to the community because potential members might not have any interest if that is the focus. I am here because I have friends here, but I have no interest in laptops.

Does "efgxt" actually stand for something? I have been meaning to ask what the story behind that is, if there is one. Or, is it a meaningless hodge-podge of random letters?

I'd like to say, if there are other ideas still floating around they're always going to be considered, but we're pretty much at the point where we need to lean into a name and stick with it.

I'm trying not to put too much weight in, however I like the idea of the main domain not being tied to solely notebooks so we can attract many others to the forum as well. I would prefer if categories could be tied to different domains however I'm not entirely sure this is possible quite yet. Subdomains linking to sections of the forum have been a thought of mine as well.

efgxt is very much "meaningless" but The "XT" portion was originally inserted to abbreviate extended technology, it was originally purchased for the purpose of being used for a couple servers (subdomains pointing to servers). I do think its fairly easy to say, type, and to remember as well.

Should SEO be considered for the offered options? or whatever, just pick a name that you like?

SEO optimization can be done no matter the main domain, we've got the others currently using a 301 redirect which is SEO friendly as well. The good thing about efgxt.net is since it is such a unique name its not really competing for top place.

But once again, efgxt is not a very descriptive name for newcomers.

EDIT: We can always have another round (or two) to hash things out, but ultimately a decision at least needs to start.

Voted for `efgxt.net`.
Reasons: First, the name kind of grew on me - it's weird and I like it :D Second, I agree with @Mr. Fox to not link the name to "notebooks".

If we do decide to go the "NotebookSomethingSomething" path, I think `NotebookTalk` is pretty good also.

`Notebookrevival`, while sounds cool for those who know the "back story", might potentially be misinterpreted by newcomers as "forum dedicated to revival of notebooks".

So, I personally am here for the notebook talk.  I think what set NBR apart from other PC forums (Tech|Inferno, Overclock.net, [H]ardForum, etc.) was the focus on notebooks.  Specifically, the various hardware manufacturer sections.  A new user passing by could find in-depth discussions on specific models, issues, and upgrade options, and find knowledgeable people to ask questions of.  I really hope that we manage to recapture that here.  There's really no place else where it exists otherwise.  Notebooks were the niche of NBR.

I say this recognizing that there is a group of people who (presumably) originally joined up to chat about notebooks, but stuck around after moving away from notebooks and are still active.  (I know that Intel's move to BGA and the general move away from MXM has played a role in making notebooks less interesting for some people since there are generally less upgrade options now.)  And I don't want to say that I think there is no room for more general PC chatter on a site where most users are chatting about notebooks.  No issue with that at all.

So I guess the question is, do we have the name reflect our niche or do we try to push beyond our niche and broaden out the user base a bit?  I personally am a bit apprehensive that trying to be the home for "everything PC" will put us in a position that nothing really sets us apart from other forums like those mentioned above.  Anyway, I guess that is why we have a vote.  🙂

By virtue of having all of the notebook manufacturer subforms and threads you still appeal to the narrow interests of notebook brand niche without losing any appeal to folks that have different interests. For example, there are also subforms relating to general hardware, software and operating system discussions that are not specific to laptops.

I would love to see some major emphasis relating to driver and firmware mods that free computer users of any and all form factors from the bondage of draconian Nazi control freak computer manufacturing practices. The only way computer owners are going to continue enjoying autonomy is to beat them at their own deceptive and dishonest puppeteer racket the general population of sheeple have bowed to. If we prostrate ourselves before them they will continue to play the role of digi-gods.

To me, the word Notebook reminds me of the old forums more so than it does a mobile device. I mean, who the hell calls a laptop a "notebook" anymore lol. I'd personally like to keep Notebook in the name because of the legacy it carries for most of us, and so people who eventually see this website can put two and two together about the old website closing down.

I can agree a more general name would probably attract more people, maybe have a  dedicated NBR thread prominently so refugees that were away during the whole shutdown can see it's a member continuation. Idk though niche sites(and names) are usually better more focused, and obviously the reason so many of us found NBR was search results about notebook issues, it had the deepest catalog of threads with great info. I assume it will take a long time for threads from this site to get a lot of search traffic since it's starting at zero. Hard one really when you think about it. I think a lot of this was discussed in the "is nbr dying" thread, with the move to bga by manufacturers the availability of modular laptops for regular people is almost nothing. Usually the price is not worth it imo for what's available now, if there are any with modern up to date specs. Hm head scratcher, the instinct is usually the best though meaning something reminiscent or relevant to laptops/notebooks.

I'm not a fan of any of the names (save perhaps NotebookTalk). EFGXT is difficult to relate to the subject matter, and I also disagree that we should make this a more 'generic' forum: that's what Linus Tech Tips are for. We do have subfora for the desktop discussions to go on, and I think that's a pretty decent way of catering to everyone without diluting the core aspect, which is... notebooks.

34 minutes ago, Tenoroon said:

Erm... That word is the basis for Apple's entire MacBook line. Macintosh notebook → Mac notebook → MacBook. Many other brands have 'Book' as a brand name, like Surface Book, HP ProBook, Razer Book, Asus VivoBook, etc etc...
