Don't think this has been mentioned yet but MXM still going strong, pic attached is a 60w RTX 4060 mxm type A module & there's type B modules too

I could see this in a 7520 and 7530, but not the M4800 because of the bottlenecking 4th gen processors could have.

interesting, the highest end RTX 5000 is equipped with a 4080 die.

Biggest bottleneck is chipset, Turing architecture last one for PCI Express 3.0, I'm not sure if 4.0 is backward compatible. Dell from 7x20 gen have NGFF format only (Pascal Px200 onwards). Also when you dissasembly NGFF connector, you have to buy new one for 100-200$.


They really don't want anyone to make upgrades themselves.

Oh I'm wrong I thought the 7530 was the last one with MXM.

4.0 is backwards compatible, I know that having 8x PCIe 3.0 on the RTX 4060 does not result in any performance loss so the MXM-A card should be fine. IIRC even the fastest cards (4090 etc) don't lose any performance with PCIe 3.0 x16

No unfortunately, not even eDP or USB-C display output.

true, just 4% on average at 1080p performance loss, but u better check which game ure playing:

noice might drop prices a bit cheaper with Aetina but then theres always the quality / longevity issues with Aetina cards....

What issues have people experienced with Aetina cards?  Sample size of one, an Aetina PCB is not as beefy as on an OEM card.

admittedly, its been a while, this was back in the Pascal days, especially with standard MXM 1070s. Aetina cards were known to blow up left and right after a while of usage. hoping they improved on their robustness since then 😄

One would hope that since they are still in business they have learned a thing or two 😄

 

Do these even have official prices or is this one of those products where they only talk about pricing if you order at least 100 GPU?

 

In any case not getting really excited about this as even when compatible the pricing probably will be extremely hefty for the 5000 and the hopefully cheaper but still expensive 3500 is not really that much of an upgrade over a 2080 / 2080 super that can be for 600$ or less with a bit of patience:

Hello all, I came across this: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/sgwzone-gaming-ai-box-egpu-dock/x/17429983#/ and got quite excited about it since I have been looking for a compact egpu solution for my oculink handheld.

 

After delving a bit further, I realised the MXM platform that they are using is not as simple as it seems, they claim to be using RTX 3070 mobile and RTX 4060 desktop gpu chip but is that really possible  or are they pulling a fast one?

I don't think it will work in many laptops due to no eDP support.

Price is relatively reasonable too, I wonder if this will work in my p750FM board my heatsink is already modified to accept a center positioned gpu die due to using rbe msi 1080

Or the older P750DM / P770DM ones that came with the 970m/980m already have the heatsink for that form factor MXM card.  It could bring some life into those old ones.  If it only worked!

My laptop is actually the P750ZM with a DM-G board its a frankenmod so P750FM fits lol

 

An RTX 3080 MXM would make for a good send off to the platform.

Oh nice! But send off? NEVER!! As mentioned way above and quoted below - there may be newer nvidia series MXM cards available in the future too!  I don't know what the "record" of oldest laptop chassis + newest generation GPU is, but it can be broken! Like a 2014 laptop with 2024 GPU. Who knows. I think with the increased prices, having tech last more generations will be more common, and it would just be cool to get more use out of systems that work fine, but just may not be chart toppers - which for most people would be good enough.

Im pretty sure that crown belongs to an Acer laptop iirc back in 2010 or so (cant remember the specific model) 

I sent an inquiry to that shop to see if they have done any testing with the machines I have on hand. Whats also interesting is they have a PCIe to MXM adapter @Tenoroon

The one they have is the official adapter from Nvidia. Those things are expensive, but should work with every MXM 3.0 card ever made. They have a lot of debug tools too from what I have read. Information on them is limited, but I believe they are so expensive due to being discontinued and nearly impossible to get if you weren't a big company.

Seller said 3080 doesn't support eDP. Still wonder if it would work through Optimus.

7738G went from a T6400 dual core processor to a QS9000 quad core, a 1600x900 display at 60hz to 1080p 95% RGB gamut panel OCed to 100Hz and an HD4570 to an HD7770M or if you got friendly with some inductors a 460M.

That's the biggest leap I had from stock to modified I think.
