Has anybody tried the last bios (1.27.0)? It failed to install on my 7760.

Well he just told me it happened a few days ago.  Both times he woke up with the message so it happened at night and he was not running anything.  Hooked to the dock and monitors were off.  I am going to try to change the thermal management from Optimized to Ultra Performance.  Maybe just the change will change something.  The system Bios is on 1.26.  This is the system that lost the service tag a few weeks back.  So maybe the MB!

What message did you get?  I have not installed this one yet but was going to install on a 7560 that is on 1.26.0 now.  Typically I make sure I do not have any dock or external devices connected and then run the update.

 

I also just noticed that in the previous bios version list, 1.23.0 is missing.  I wonder if they pulled it.  That is what I have on my 7760.

 

For 1.26.0 and 1.27.0 there is a note:

 

"Once the BIOS is upgraded, you cannot downgrade the BIOS to version 1.23.0 or earlier. BIOS downgrades are restricted when there are security updates and important fixes with earlier versions that impact the functionality of the system."

 

But earlier bios versions are listed. Just not 1.23.0.

Installed on my 7560 just now with no issues.

It was failing through Dell command update. I downloaded and updated manually, that worked perfectly. Problem solved. However, as mentioned in a previous post, I am still getting an error with the last Intel UHD/Iris Xe Graphics Driver.

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone ever tried/saw or read about a 7550/7750 upgraded with 7560/7760 dGPU ? I'm seeing a cheap RTX A3000 on the market (the A4000 is pretty tempting too)...

Haven't seen any of these upgrades, though upgrading Precision 7X30 with a 7X40 GPU was shown to be possible originally by @Ionising_Radiation.

 

In the case of 7X50/7X60, the GPU cards are not quite the same.  Precision 7X60 supports PCIe4 and they have removed one DGFF connector from these cards compared to the 7X50 ones, running them at 8×PCIe4 rather than 16×PCIe3.  If you were to install such a card in a Precision 7X50, it will only run at 8×PCIe3 (assuming that it even worked).

 

You'll also want to compare photos and see if the screws are in the same place (I seem to remember seeing a difference there but it has been a while since I looked).  If the cards are physically compatible then there is a decent chance that it will work, but I'm not sure if a Precision 7X50 would be happy about not having all of the DGFF connectors on the motherboard side attached to something (I guess you could test that by removing the appropriate DGFF connector on your current card and seeing if it will run at 8×PCIe3), or if Dell has not changed the DGFF pinout when they dropped one of the connectors.

Having my own heatsink/fan assembly replaced.  I just called them a little bit ago and they agreed to send the part out.  It sometimes makes a grinding noise but only when it is operating at low speeds.  It has been getting more frequent over time.  Enough is enough...

The 7560 I have issues with we previously had the fans chanced.  I just ran some more diagnostics tests, this time in windows using support assist and all pass.  No weird sounds from the fans.  During fan test the fans to do spin fast.  Same on my 7760.  During memory test you can hear the fans.

 

I just looked in the even logs and saw a bunch of entries that noted "Warning for USB-USBHUB3 USB Device Draining system power when system idle" and then one right before the power off time that said "the system is entering modern standby" two more on the USB error (within a second) and then the system shut down.

 

I wonder if this issue is a windows issue.  He had the system plugged into the WD19DCS dock with the two USB that power the computer. I told him for now along with the dock use a power cord.

...Wait.  The SupportAssist test you can do from Windows has a fan test, and the program actually manipulates the fan speed during this test?  (I knew about the one you can run from the BIOS, but not about a Windows one.)

 

If so I'll have to find time to dig in and see if it can be reverse engineered, it might providing the missing piece to allow manual fan control on these newer systems...

You can run the fan test but not manipulate the speed. Running the fan test I did not hear a change it fan speed. Running the memory test I could hear the fans ramp up a little.

The replacement heatsink/fan assembly arrived in one day but I didn't actually replace it until yesterday.  The system is definitely better off for it; not only is the "grinding" sound gone, but the fans are running at a lower speed than they were before the swap on my mostly light "office" workload (≈1600 RPM now vs ≈2200 RPM before) — probably repasting and a proper cleaning could have also achieved a RPM reduction, though.

 

I've got 6-7 months left on the warranty for this thing.  Not sure if I will try to have the motherboard replaced again.  Still can't use the primary NVMe slot.

 

Disappointed in the "longevity" of this system somewhat.  My keyboard is in rough shape (black coating coming off of some keys).  Some of the "rubber" coating on the palmrest has come off.  The fans, which I really liked at the start, starting running higher and higher as time went on ("reset" when I replaced the assembly) even though I did blow out the dust every few months.

 

...I'm leaning more and more towards having my work system replaced by a MacBook Pro as well during the next refresh, later this year.

Hi everyone,

Has anyone had any issues with the keyboard on the 7760? I had mine replaced 3 or 4 times now. First few times due to keys paint peeling, then due to keys not working most of the time (arrows, backspace, etc). Now letter e is hardly working and it's only been 6 months since last replacement

 

There is no water damage or overheating or anything weird. I been using precision laptops for the last 10+ years going bacl to m4700 and this is the first time it's been happening...

I have 7560 and I think the keyboard is identical. It has paint flaking off like you said, and a couple of keys are starting to not always register presses. Disappointing in a premium laptop, for sure. The keyboard is easy enough to replace, and I will probably have Dell send a new one before the warranty expires.

ya, I had mine replaced 3 or 4 times. i still have 2.5 years left, so ill probably be replacing it next week, but I wonder if there is any better aftermarket solution that works... this is just so annoying, heh, but I guess one of the smaller issues that could happen...

Could be worse...  Precision 7X70 and later can't have the keyboard replaced "from the top", you have to disassemble the entire system from the bottom (take out the heatsink, motherboard, inner frame) in order to access the keyboard and swap it out.

I have also been using these things since the M6700 and I don't understand how come they can't have a decent keyboard when they have been able to do it in the past.

We're due for a chassis refresh so maybe next year they will "fix" this.  (Or, maybe not...  It's not just Precision systems that they have done this to, so maybe this is just the way things are now.)

I may try alienware stuff next time as they come with mechanical keyboard option, so maybe they will be sturdier

 

won't be this year though 13th/14th gen stuff is same, and hope is next year, it'll b worth the upgrade!

Anyone has issues with WD19TB dock? Was using for the last two years without any trouble. Suddenly from last month it stopped working. Initially thought it's dock issue, but later find out dock is working fine with XPS 13. I installed windows 11 in a separate ssd and still dock was not working. 

 

Dell support did remote diagnosis for almost a month and then decided to replace motherboard.  After replacement also it's not working. 

 

Is this something to do with TB4 port no longer supporting TB3 dock?  Xps 13 is almost 4 years old and having TB3 port, so it works fine. But Precision 7560 is TB4 port and stopped supporting? 

 

BTW if I disable thunderbolt option in BIOS, then same dock working fine in precision 7560, but during boot gives a warning something related like connect to thunderbolt port for better speed and performance. 

 

Another problem without thunderbolt option enabled, everytime I've to reconnect the dock after starting the laptop.
