Yeah, looking forward to that. If EU regulators are good for anything - it's punishing BigTech :classic_laugh: And these morons are asking to be punished.

Thankfully, most ad-blockers still work and are regularly updated to account for whatever bs youtube is trying to pull. I'd probably stop using it if I had to suffer through the avalanche of ads... Every time I take my wife's iphone and open youtube - I can't believe how many ads there are these days, it's just insane. And the contrast to me is so apparent since on my devices I haven't seen any ads for years :classic_laugh:

I keep forgetting that Vivaldi is available on iOS now, it's my primary (> 95% of the time) browser on desktop, but I'm still using Firefox when I browse on mobile, which is admittedly much less often and mostly to check football scores on Saturdays.

One of their nice, small new features is allowing you to change the order in which auto-suggest suggests sites.  Do you want it to suggest bookmarks first?  Search suggestions?  Frequently visited pages?  Directly-typed URLs?  By putting "Directly-typed URLs" first, I've solved the problem where if I bookmark a page on a site, that bookmarked page was the default rather than the top-level site.

DuckDuckGo is my main search engine but I guess I'm just not convinced that I need to use their browser versus just their search engine in my favorite browser, with uBlockOrigin installed for tracking protection.  Which happens to still be working just fine for YouTube after an update to its block lists.

See.... RIP uBlock Origin? Google Proceeds With Plan to Shake Up Chrome Extensions

For years now, Google has been trying to wind down Manifest V2 in favor of Manifest V3, which is designed to offer better security for Chrome extensions. But the effort has been met with resistance from ad-block providers since Manifest V3 can also restrict access to content filtering on the Chrome browser.

If you’re a fan of ad blockers, prepare for some change: Google is resuming a plan to phase out older Chrome extensions, including the one for uBlock Origin.

The phaseout will start in June 2024, when Google begins disabling older Chrome extensions built with the “Manifest V2” system. “Users impacted by the rollout will see Manifest V2 extensions automatically disabled in their browser and will no longer be able to install Manifest V2 extensions from the Chrome Web Store,” the company says.

Still, the news is sparking worries for fans of uBlock Origin on Chrome. “By disabling support for MV2, Google will be pushing even more ads,” tweeted Tuta, the encrypted email provider

Try Waterfox. It is pretty decent. Chrome has been my favorite for many years but Google has never been trustworthy and the things that the Alphabet A-holes are doing now is worthy of death. The sad truth is all Windows and Mac OSes suck now and so does the vast majority of the software garbage that runs on them. Browsers almost universally suck.

The limitations of Linux and Linux software are becoming more beneficial as the state of decline progresses.

^^^ interesting viewpoints.

Still satisfied with FF here. esr & normal, noscript + ublock origin (+ some firewall preventing FF's own background chat).

But... was expecting to see changes in YT behavior, nothing so far.
Seems ublock (+ noscript?) still does it's job.

Anyone attacked by ads lately, remedy implemented ?

I'm also using Firefox ESR (+ uBlock Origin, and extra Mozilla "fluff" like Pocket disabled).  I saw the stuff about Google changing up how YouTube ads work more frequently to get around ad blockers, but I have been on YouTube a little bit in the past few days and I have not yet run across any ads.  ...I think I also saw a post from the uBlock guys stating that there might be times while YouTube is briefly unavailable when they have to update their scripts or lists or whatever, to keep up with Google's changes, but I haven't run into this yet.

uBlock Origin saves the Internet for me.  I'm glad that I switched to Firefox a couple of years ago ... using a mainstream Chromium-based browser will be untenable soon.

My employer uses Google services for many things and at least once a week (at least it feels that frequent) Google makes a change that looks and feels repulsive. They continually dumb things down, bloat the UI, create ugliness and do things that diminish usefulness and user experience. They make using a PC feel like I am using a tablet or smartphone and I despise them for it. Micro$lop isn't really any better. They are two turds in the same toilet. I'd love to flush them both down the drain, along with the third turd (crApple). All three companies are sewer rats.

It seems to be becoming more and more common that things that are stated or claimed bear no factual semblance to reality. It feels like sometimes they just make stuff up based on what they think people want to hear. It makes matters even worse when they are full of crap and their assumptions are way off base, or reflective of only what a like-minded segment thinks.

Dang it, why is it so hard to find normalcy, decency and goodness is this goofed-up spinning chunk of rock? Open source and closed source, both vessels of wicked machinations and degenerate, ignoble underlying agendas that do not serve the greater good. I was using Thorium as a Chrome substitute (on Chris's recommendation) and it turns out to be filled with Easter eggs planted by their sick-o developer. With Open Source, it could be a fork of a fork of a fork which could lead to many problems and "sicko" easter eggs which are no better than the malware droppers.  I use Chrome or Chromium as fallback which is very rare unless the website doesn't work on Firefox & Edge.

As far as privacy is concerned, it is unclear how often Safety Check runs and how often Chrome reports back to the mothership. There is no option to turn this off.

The chrome://flags tricks for getting rid of the new modern stupid Chrome download bubble feature doesn't work anymore. This one work. The software engineers dumbing down Chrome for every new version nowadays @Mr. Fox +++

It's probably called adjustment to the population baseline.

That is a politically correct definition for dumbing down. We sometimes forget that any number multiplied by zero has a product of zero.

LOOL. Who want Edge on their computers? At least people in EU will soon get some freedom from Microsof's madness.

Microsoft Edge is in hot waters again for its controversial behavior. This time, users accuse the browser of stealing open tabs and other data from Google Chrome without permission.

The users have already paid Google the ultimate price with thier valuable privacy/data,  now you may have to pay a second time to get out the info they already grabbed from you last time or now in real time. Greed have no limits. Hmm, I hope people arent that stupid as Google think.

You Might Have to Pay to Use Google Search in the Near Future
https://wccftech.com/you-might-have-to-pay-to-use-google-search-in-the-near-future/

Google Search could go paid, but only if you want to use AI-powered features

The report talks about how sources familiar with Google's plans talk about how there will be advanced AI-powered search features, and they will become part of the company's current subscription services like Gemini Advanced and Google One. The report also indicates that the premium tier of Search will have ads, and if you want to continue using the traditional Search, that is going to be free for everyone.

Nice. Continue pay with your privacy on top get forced unwanted ads and the icing on the cake have to pay to search info they already have stolen from you. This is criminal.
