SuperMG Posted October 13 Author Posted October 13 New PRICE DROP! Please buy! Backlight mod v2 with PWM control: https://ebay.io/m/6xLqRv
Derpmaster69 Posted October 17 Posted October 17 This is a bit out of topic but, are there any options for GPU upgrade in MSI GX70 (AMD counterpart of the GT70) So far from what I've seen, it's got something called AMD Enduro which forces it to use iGPU for light tasks and then use the HD8970M for heavy tasks. No one has managed to disable iGPU through any means. The laptop uses an 17.3 inch LVDS panel and what I want to know is that if there is any possible GPU upgrade for it. (Picked it up at a local marketplace for 50$) Specs- AMD A10 5750M 8GB DDR3 1600 128GB SATA SSD HD 8970M 2GB Heard that NVIDIA graphics cards won't work in this model due to the Enduro thing. Please help.

Please help. Hello. This is the wrong thread. Your laptop is LVDS. This thread is for a product to allow eDP displays to work with the newest RTX MXM. Enduro is the Optimus of Intel. Try to get a Quadro Maxwell or a cheap Quadro P3000/P4000 and try. If it doesn't work, you could send the item back if the seller agrees. Did your laptop model came with an Nvidia MXM? I don't see why it wouldn't work but your CPU's single thread is very low.
Derpmaster69 Posted October 18 Posted October 18 Sorry for posting on this thread but the MSI GX70 has some weird bs that forces the igpu and dgpu to run together. 15 hours ago, SuperMG said: Enduro is the Optimus of Intel. A user in MSI forums had tried to install an 880M but the laptop had a black screen. Any thoughts on GPU compatibility?

No. I meant did your laptop brand model came with an NVIDIA GPU? Like a GTX 780M? Edit: I researched and no, it never came with Nvidia graphics only with AMD. You might encounter some problems like no boot, fan panic. Even if your APU is the display device. If you had the MSI GT70, it's compatible with Nvidia

Backlight mod v2 with PWM control: https://ebay.io/m/6xLqRv Hi SuperMG, how do I buy this from the UK? Also in your eBay listing, you list my laptop: HP ZBook 17 G5. What newer cards are known to work with this? Currently I have a Quadro P5200 and I'm just looking to upgrade to something with the at least the same Vram, 16GB, but with newer RTX Tensor/RT cores. I've only just joined but I've read this forum for some time and I am still a little confused about the vbios requirements. The Zbook MXMs not having vbios on card for example. I was looking at this: https://www.x-vsion.com/product/mxm-embedded-module-rtx-a5500-16gb/ but happy to use any later RTX 16B card than I have now. What card was known to work from your listing? And what if any vbios would be required for these embedded MXMs to work with my laptop. Thanks.

Someone tested with the RTX 4090 (X-VSION vbios chip) withOUT the backlight mod and it worked with his external DP output and also in Switchable Graphics mode. People tested the RTX 3000/5000 (HP vbios chip) and they worked in the Zbook G5 17. G5 17 and G6 17 share the same MXM pinouts so no worries. You need to find a custom heatsink for the RTX Ada cards. I wouldn't recommend 150W+ cards because of the thermal room and of the limit of the official 230W PSU. On my tests, the A5500 was slower than the RTX 3080M and the A5500 was a little bit faster than the RTX 5000. I also sell an RTX 4070 115W but it's a 8GB card. Has the backlight mod already installed on the card. It beats the 3080M. Without the backlight mod, you'll have a black screen in your main eDP screen.

Looking at the cards and comparing to the P5200 I would have assumed my existing heatsink is OK? I'm aware the G6 Turing cards are a different wider form with staggered screw mount holes but I thought maybe these more standard 3.0B MXMs would be OK? I even thought of scouting for a G6 MB, as it's the same case as the G6 but those HP MXMs were only around in that laptop as far as I am aware, and Turing is only a little better in performance. Yes I'd prefer 115w - I'm almost permanently on a 280w G4 TB dock, but it still only supplies 230w to the actual laptop. 17 hours ago, SuperMG said: I also sell an RTX 4070 115W but it's a 8GB card. That's tempting but I want this for Davinci Resolve Studio that recommends a minimum of 16GB vram for advanced AI tools - the P5200 is fine just a little slow with those things. Did that RTX 4090 work with the standard heatshield? And is discrete not possible with any of these cards? Not necessarily a deal breaker but I'd have to re-think a little, if the case. Definitely want the laptop screen to work too, whatever, since I use 2 screens + an Ultrastudio driven video monitor and no desk space for 2 external pc screens - the 2nd monitor HDMI out. I really like this laptop and it still kicks OK, but maybe I should be looking at 2nd hand G8-10s, but times are hard for everyone right now. Thanks for all your info, I've been reading your posts carefully, since you obviously really know your stuff.
Mercer Posted 9 hours ago Posted 9 hours ago Kind of partly answered my own question I guess, re-heatshield and what you said: I see the difference in layout of chip, memory and VRMs.

Yes I don't think you can get any other higher PSU to work with these workstation laptops. I'll stick to looking at the 115w cards then. Understood.

The fastest 115W RTX is the RTX 4070 MXM. There's the 4090 MXM 115W too, I have its vBIOS (to go from 150W to 115W). You can do that: - Buy the A5000/A5500/3080/4090 from X-VSION/ZRT - Buy my 4070 MXM with backlight mod, can ship now Try which one has better RT and CUDAs performance and sell the one you don't want. That's what I did with the 3080 and 4080. I kept the 4080.

Yes, they all will be a significant upgrade I think: that A5500 has over 3 x the Cuda cores, than my P5200, for example. Are there modded bios's for all the cards you list? I read some X-Vision ones as problematic. As I said I want 16GB vram but what are you charging for that modded 4070, if I may ask? Thanks again.

The 4080/4090/5080 vBIOSes have the eDP on B and this makes the Nvidia drivers go nuts (since the laptop's display is at D)... The PDF instructions show a workaround on how to get them to work by using the GPU's D port. I can do 489€ with Paypal as friends so no marketplace fees. For the shipping you can pay later as I don't know how much I'll pay for UK shipping at the end. The card has a warranty till May of 2027. I can include the digital invoice of it later.
Mercer Posted 6 hours ago Posted 6 hours ago Ok thanks, let me have a think about it. I might definitely buy just your cable mod for reserve though. The backlight control, can that be mounted in a drilled hole? I'm thinking of running it out the dummy ODD front, with a spare I've got.

I can do 479€ for the whole
