Encountered a weird issue. Under heavy load (260W Maximum) the power brick powers off. It won't power back on until unplug it and plug it back in. Concerned it may have kicked the bucket. Gonna try it with the OEM brick.

hmmm....any tweaks uve implemented via TS? ive encountered the same when setting PROCHOT value too high under prolonged cpu stress.

The power supply goes into protection due to exceeding the consumption limit, that is, your laptop consumes more watts than the power supply can provide.

shouldnt be possible on stock bios on this machine, since the mobo has a wattage limit implemented which cant just be switched off that easily. so either temp issues or indeed defective psu.

yep exactly, i noticed the same. @GT3000 set the PROCHOT value to 98C in TS and the issue should be resolved 🙂

Peak consumption goes beyond 260w, as far as I know the standard power supply for this model is 230-245w, which power supply do you use?

also stock psu and whenever i do stress testing im also reaching that 260W, thats the cap on the mobo. but ive only ever experienced sudden shutdowns when allowing the CPU to get consistently over 98-100C. i could imagine that maybe the nearby VRMs also get too hot and thus inefficient to be able and stay stable.

If that was the case the fets will go in thermal protection and you would rather get throttling than shutdown. It is hard for me to think that those fets are not rated at least for 10-15 amps.

depends how good the cooling is on them. might be that the thermal pads he has installed are crappy (stock) or that they dont make proper contact. if u exceed the limits too fast and too hard ull not get to see throttling but skip directly towards the trip / shutdown.

So let's see, he was drawing approx. 108W at 1.2 v, meaning 90amps. Even P870DM fets tripped at 120 amps, so is hard for me to believe that this are not rated above 90 amps. You are right on the cooling factor tough.

The behavior of the power supply described above cannot in any way be related to overheating of the processor or laptop power circuits, such behavior only indicates that the internal overload protection is activated in the power supply or the capacitors at the power output to the consumer are faulty in the power supply. The same is true for the power supply can respond to a short circuit on the 19 volt line.

This was with the aftermarket PSU adapter the 300W one. For reference I have not yet repasted the laptop.

This means that the 300-watt power supply is faulty, as a rule, capacitors fail and the power supply no longer holds the load.

no word yet from the unicorn master on compatibility with RPL. would be a sweet upgrade though!

So far as I know the Prema bios still isn't available. But you can modify hidden UEFI setup variables to get the same effect.

yep, recently been pretty quiet on the dev front, been ultra busy with real life (new job, new appartment, getting baby ready, etc). but no worries, will be sure to post if anything comes up!

So no more developments on the Prema front then @jaybee83? What is the current status now in terms of functionality?

 

@win32asmguy did you end up selling your NH55 or keeping it?

 

I still do plan on picking one of these up eventually. 🙂
