Pulling 200w+ from the wall (Kilowatt meter) on a CB23 run before I start testing heatsink placements for some passive cooling....

 

 

Any updates @jaybee83 on BIOS thangs or holding steady atm?

I still like to tinker with it plus it has really nice performance. I'm going to dial in the 3070ti next but really the best upgrade is most likely the aftermarket heatsink but they're still $300+. On the other hand, the 330w PSU is down to ~$68 so I might need to order one of those seeing as the CPU was pulling 200w from the wall all by itself.

 

13900k/14900k is the ideal end game but that aftermarket heatsink (or modified stock heatsink) would be near mandatory along with a chip that has a V/F curve at <0.970 at the 4300 point and hopefully not a bleeder and hot.

 

Some more work on a good BIOS would be nice too but something tells me the Socket 1700 NH55 wasn't exactly a massive seller for Clevo. 🙂

 

 

Testing the same 12900k on a motherboard with cooling removed as an issue and locking in PL125w limits and DDR4 memory locked in at 3200 for comparison:

 

 

 

 

EDIT: If someone is interested in a barebones NH55, there is one up for bid on eBay. PC Specialist model open box. Might be able to get it for a good price. This is the 3070ti model so top end:

yup holding steady as u say 😄 keeping an eye out on 14900K / KS silicon on fleabay, K sku can be had for under 440€, which is pretty nice. cheapest KS is at 590€ with price offer option.

 

id be interested to see if the 330W PSU would actually do anything, not that the board is hard limited to a specific max. wattage... whats the highest u were able to pull thus far?

 

also, can you link those custom heatsinks?

They are actually these I have my buddy cutting down to fit along the small islands around the heatsink:

I also want to try some other flatter designs along the pipes themselves for testing for a little more passive cooling so the fans and heatsink overall don't get so overwhelmed. I remember doing a lot of testing with my MSI MS-1722 QX9300 back in the day and it definitely helped keep it from going over the edge.

 

I know the best move is to unhinge the wallet and order the much thicker and better one from Aliexpress, but I just can't justify $320-350 for it......yet. 🤣

 

Seeing the killowatt meter hit 200w+ just on CPU was definitely a, "whoa...." moment on such a small little notebook. I'd like to run some simultaneous tests but it won't be something stupid like furmark + prime95. I don't want to kill the darn thing!

 

Remind me back in the day when we uncapped our i7-940xm in the M15x and it was pulling almost 200w running prime95 + furmark for funsies.  I posted a video 13yrs ago for the forums on YT:

dayum sounds like custom work with small volume, otherwise wouldnt make sense to have such pricing attached...

I would enjoy attempting to port Coreboot to the NH55 but I believe all of the chassis were sold with Intel Boot Guard enabled requiring signed bios images with Clevo's keys. To me the NH55 never got a fair shot at being a good seller as Sager and XMG did not offer it. It was also overshadowed by 12th Gen HX being released a few months later which magically filled the gap in Intel's lineup where the NH55 and a LGA based X170 successor could have thrived.

 

Now we just have a bunch of competitors which mostly have barely adequate cooling, locked down firmware, tasteless RGB, inferior repairability compared to past designs and much higher prices.

Maybe talk to Prema as he was able to make some major inroads with the BIOS on the NH55 working with @jaybee83. I'm not sure what's up next. Releasing the full fat 12900 definitely knocked a bit of luster off of the separation between the NH55 and other BGA laptops.

 

Agreed on all points about the state of laptops atm. 😞 I have had over 10 laptops sent to me from Acer, MSI, Dell and Asus (in that order), and they all are basically the same approach. At least the Ultra 7 laptop Asus sent me has much better battery life than previous Intel T&L models.

Oh, the Aliexpress links are still on the launch page for the whole replacement heatsink here. Unlike the PSUs, their prices have not really gone down.

Cheap heatsink can be found on taobao where you can negotiate the price or you can contact @ViktorV He knows some contacts they may provide heatsinks with good quality and good price for the aliexpress one I saw a russian guy on youtube with the same laptop under the name Hasee ZX10 tried the aliexpress heatsink and because of the poor contact it became a piece of junk not usable

This case is not worth mentioning here; the problem is not in the heatsink at all.

The problem was that the owner of the laptop was unable to correctly install the heatsink and achieve correct pressure on the CPU and GPU side. So he sawed it down the middle, thinking it would help. Of course, after that it only got worse temps, and the author decided that the whole problem was in the heatsink, but this is not at all the case.
There is plenty of evidence that this heatsink copes well with hot CPUs, and there is no reason not to buy it.
But the price for Aliexpress is very high; on Taobao it costs about $100.

It seemed like the Insyde bios for the NH55 had support for additional e-core clusters present in 13th Gen and newer. I guess integrating updated microcode was not enough as I am sure Prema tried it.

 

I am going to make a thread about the MSI Raider 18 which I have been testing for a couple of weeks now. It has been the best 18 inch laptop I have used so far and worth some discussion.

Yeah I was wondering if a forum member ended up with it. You also have to realize once kitted out with good hardware, the cost will shoot to over $1000 quickly total cost so that always comes into play.

Yes indeed, I was tempted for a little while then added things up and quickly scrapped any thought of getting into yet another project that I am unlikely to really end up using when all is said and done - just not a fan of smaller screens and the other limitations of this chassis.

 

It is still very puzzling that Clevo had the X170 chassis that was already fully developed and for the next generation decided to put both the big Intel and AMD chips (up to 12900K and 5950X) into smaller 15.6 laptops with inferior connectivity, functionality, power delivery and cooling.

I also thought about it, unfortunately everything is going towards reducing costs and greater mobility or miniaturization of the device, it's a some frustrating that the last great model was not continued.

Tell me about it. I really liked the 19 inch class of laptops that were out back when I was in elementary school. The alienware mALX was one of the coolest laptops I saw at the time. I'd like those laptops to make a comeback. It's good that the 18 inch class has made a comeback recently, now we need the 19 inch class to make a comeback too.

 

Big screens are awesome. The increased real estate allows you to view more at once when working, and it makes games more immersive. A 19 inch laptop is perfectly portable in my opinion, and I'd be happy to carry one around with me everywhere.

I loved my Alienware mALX! I took it with me in 2008 when we went to Florida for vacation and Tropical Storm (nee Hurricane) Fay hit while we were down there. We camped out in our condo room and I leveled a priest from 1 to 40 in EQ II on that AMD behemoth. 🙂

 

Fun story, about half way to 40, my mALX wouldn't boot due to a bad memory module. We traveled in the torrential rain to the Best Buy about 15 miles away to buy a set of new memory to swap in for the remainder of vacation. 🤣

 

I would love the return of an 18"+ display full DTR monster.

I would also like to see something completely modular at best, such as the x170 or area51 with a screen size of 18 inches, but as you may have noticed, there were very few such devices on the gaming laptop scene and in the future they will probably become increasingly rare, since in addition to the above it also uses less demand.

 

Your wishes and mine are not what the manufacturer considers, there are completely another priorities in the first place and this is an obvious fact.
