I think if I had the means for a desktop build right now, I'd be doing a lot of copy-pasta from this thread :)

I've actually been eyeing the new Ryzens , and they look impressive. Ever since my first PC, all my desktops and laptops had Intel CPUs, but for a desktop right now, I would go with AMD for sure.

haha thanks for the kind words mate! ive had plenty of time to plan this build, so basically every single component was researched in depth.

next OP update likely on monday, having guests over for the weekend 🙂

next component to arrive is the 7950X, should have been delivered yesterday but theres some kinda delay so now its planned for next tuesday.

Yeah, the amount of thought that went into this is noticeable :) As @ryan said, it's funny to be excited, but I am :classic_laugh:

Keep us updated and hopefully you'll get all the parts without much delays, so you can enjoy it thoroughly before your kid comes.

I really wonder how dlss 3.0 will look and if its going for a sharper look over the semi blurred look, and will they release it to ampere if it's even possible to do so I heard it uses a form of frame generation and insertion. should be neat. keep us posted @jaybee83

i am a bit skeptical when it comes to any kind of image quality enhancing algos, really depends on the general implementation, the game itself and the users susceptibility to minor or major artifacts. best baseline is always to have high raw performance in rasterization and ray tracing, of course!

Team Red all the way I can see hahaha

The X570S Ace from MSI was actually in my potential mobo list when i was still saving up and updating the build list every time something new came out. pretty strong VRMs and lots of I/O for a pretty good price. hows the 6900XT treating u so far?

As for the Blue + Red combo (Raptor + RDNA3) option missing from the poll... I doubt many would go for it, but maybe some EVGA fans who prefer Intel CPUs would, just to stick it to nVIDIA?  I have Blue + Red currently and have for the past decade, but I was building when Bulldozer was current so going Blue was an easy choice.  I actually switched from nGreedia due to another of their mishaps, the Soldergate issue with their early lead-free GPUs cracking over time and failing early.  That had affected my previous GPU, so when I built this rig I was determined to go AMD for the GPU.  Got a screaming deal on an HD 6870 close to the end of that generation's life cycle, too.

I know what you mean about it being fun to share online too.  One of my mates is also into computer hardware like I am, and a couple can appreciate graphics cards, but only that one friend is going to ask which motherboard I bought.

I bet you'll like the keyboard.  I used the Das Keyboard 4 with Cherry MX Brown switches at work pre-pandemic and it was fantastic.  Unfortunately my new office isn't staffed solely by keyboard enthusiasts so even a Brown would probably be a bit noisy for that environment.  But when my home-based, well-loved Microsoft Natural 4000, on which all letters but Q, T, and Y have lost their labels, eventually wears out?  I'm definitely going Team Brown.

I'm a bit curious about the gallium nitride 65W super compact charger.  I think there was one GaN desktop PSU on the market at the time I bought my SeaSonic, and I considered it but it was at least twice as expensive and for the levels of power I was going to be using with it, it wouldn't have actually been any more efficient than a SeaSonic Titanium.  Still interesting tech, and this is the first of I've heard of it being deployed in a presumably-for-laptops charger.

I kind of agree on Thermaltake, I knew a chap in college who had one of those big (for the time) 1200W Thermaltakes in his self-built desktop with a $400 case and all the latest hardware for the time (his parents must have been minted, either that of he spent all of a semester's loans on a new rig).  Well a couple months later the PSU caught fire and fried itself and the DVD drive (which in that case was somehow mounted above the PSU), but he got fairly lucky as IIRC just the PSU, DVD, and maybe the mobo was all that got fried.  They RMA'ed it but he sold the replacement and bought something else.  Granted it's one anecdote, and I'm sure they far exceed that on average, but I haven't trusted my precious with them since.  SeaSonic?  We might have ATX 7.0 by the time you need to replace that one!

You're doing a great job building up excitement!  And now that Micro Center is throwing in free DDR5, 32 GB no less, albeit slower than your beastly DIMMs, with Ryzen systems, I'm sorely tempted to also go out and buy an R9 7950X.  I don't really have the time to build one this week and haven't properly researched the motherboard options, but...

So far the lady is a good one i had a Eiswolf 2 from Alphacool in use but change back to the factory cooling because my temps were not really better then using air cooling.

i use some tfx from thermalright one enjoy and voila temps are fine and i build it vertical insight my Lian Li O11D XL i use the pads from the Eiswolf 2 for the factory backplate and that is fine too. Every Game so far wasd playable on 3440x1440 don't check every game on Ultra settings.

My Plan is a case upgrade when the Lian Li O11 Evo XL will release it has the option to build the gpu on the side panel  and put some fans behind then mybe i will use my Eiswolf 2 again 😁.

whoa monster post, thanks for all the input and feedback! glad to see that that missing option in the poll is likely of no consequence for most users here. us pc freaks seem to be few and far between, so its nice to have a place like NBT where we can rejoice in our high fps and low temps 🤘😁 but even for me as a decades long hardware enthusiast, ive only started researching stuff like keyboards and power supplies in more depth when i started planning this build about 3 years ago. since i needed all that time to save up, it gave me more than ample time to actually dig in and research what kind of standards and features to look out for.

btw, speaking of the 7950X and building excitement, it arrived today! 🤠thats 6 out of 11 components in hand now, were making serious progress! 😎 ill update the OP accordingly.

LOL someone's excited for that new Evo case hahaha! tbh im not a big fan of vertical gpu mounting, main reason for that were sub-par temps. and ive always been a guy who goes for function over form 😄 HOWEVER, im curious to see if that sidemounted vertical gpu position in the Evo would make a difference. ud basically get fresh air from the bottom intakes, lead it onto the GPU and then out of the case (do i assume correctly that the area behind the gpu would be fan outtake holes connected to outside of the case?). at the same time, if the gpu sucks up too much of that fresh air, u might be hindering the cpu cooling, since it depends on front to back air movement as opposed to bottom to top/side flows. keep us updated on this when u get the case!

as for the alphacool eiswolf, ive actually been considering that on and off (still undecided) as a custom option to watercool the gpu. im surprised to see that u didnt experience any improvement in temps? is the stock air cooler that good or was it maybe sub-par mounting of the eiswolf block? could also be that the quick disconnects on the eiswolf tubes restrict water flow too much and thus cause meh temps?

edit: OP updated with 7950X received and details on the CPU cooling!

It is like Christmas when i was 6/7/8 years old 😅

The stock air cooler is awesome but i think that my air flow was not that good and a few weeks ago i searched for some good air flow options for the O11 and found this from caseking germany and now the temps are good even with vertical build of the gpu. And i had to check the screws several times because after a few weeks I had to tighten the screws because they were loose was a very strange situation and experience with the Eiswolf 2.

aha, ok! that config would change things up consideably, having both top and bottom intakes 🙂 good thing that caseking provides such config templates, kudos to them!

thats weird stuff with the eiswolf 2 bud, makes me skeptical to invest money in that... be that as it may, ill have to check air cooling performance first on the 4090 and see what i can improve there via liquid metal, repadding (depending on how godód/bad the stock pads are) and hopefully some 600+W leaked vbios without EVGA KP to help us out this time....

OP updated with details on the mouse and also an additional section for planned system upgrades in the near future (minor upgrades that is, i.e. cooling, storage, lighting, etc.).

Btw, Asus mainboard reserved for my order and confirmed in stock, hoping for a shipping conirmation by tomorrow!

As for CPU AiO, Keyboard and Case, they should all be in stock and hopefully shipping by end of this week 🙂

Whoa! These prices are insane! I'm in a similar boat, with my laptop on what feels like its last leg and I'm considering building a desktop next. I've been on gaming laptops for over 10 years now.

In a previous lifetime, over 15 years ago, I used to work for a company and I was building PCs. All the high end components would cost not even a fraction of what I see here now. This market (like others too) went properly nuts. A high end GPU would cost at most 400-500E, high end mainboard, maybe 200-300E at most. A 100E PSU would be considered an expensive one.

I'll probably start building up a list of parts, just for fun initially, although (this is for another topic) my main goal will be slightly different. I'm going to look for the absolute quietest build possible while still beefy enough to run everything for a few years...

Good luck with your build!

That monitor looks awesome!

and so it begins...

3IPyd5U.jpg

i was baaaarely able to fit all the boxes on our small living room table 😄 big box in the back bottom for the Neo G8, top for the Enthoo Pro 2

GutSCZB.jpg

SSD, CPU and RAM install was a breeze. nothing really changed since about 15 years ago or vs. laptop hardware 😄 just everything way BIGGER and BEEFIER! this pic is without the mobo heatshield for the SSDs, needed to leave it off until the mobo was installed in the case due to covered screw holes.

6TAHR5y.jpg

heres the mobo inside the case. the X670E Extreme is MASSIVE in E-ATX factor, so yeah....imagine what a behemoth the case is to make the mobo look so small 🤣

aside from having unpacked and checked everything and prepping the keyboard (switched out some buttons on the Ducky One III, can see the kb on the top of the third pic), thats it for building today! tomorrow ill continue with the CPU cooling and PSU 🙂 this is SO MUCH FUN! 😁
