Yes, I believe Sonoma is required for the AGPT to work properly. Someone released a patching utility to allow the GPT's emulation layers to work within the confines of Crossover so you're basically getting the best of both worlds. Apple also recently put out an updated build of the toolkit to address some bugs, which was a surprise considering I wasn't expecting such a thing to happen so soon after the initial release, if ever.

Several months ago, I had purchased a Gigabyte M28U to use in my new office space. While its picture quality and response times are quite good, especially for the substantially discounted price I paid, the problem is it's neither bright enough nor does it handle glare particularly well. As a stopgap, I swapped it out with my MSI MAG274QRF-QD, putting the M28U in my separate gaming space, and it's been worked great there. Having used a nice, high-refresh 4K screen, though, going back to 1440p was a bit of a let-down so I sought out some alternatives, specifically from Best Buy since I would want to take advantage of my TotalTech membership. First up was an open-box Sony Inzone M9. While it had the brightness I was after, the stand didn't extend high enough for my needs. Plus, the unit in question had a large patch of blotchy purple pixels that I have no idea how they got past supposed open-box quality control. Back it went. Second up, because I'm a glutton for punishment, was an open box (supposedly in better condition this time) LG 27GP950. Not as bright as the Sony but still significantly better than the Gigabyte. All was well at first until I observed a small cluster of dead pixels. Once you see, you cannot unsee. Back this one went. That return happened during BB's Black Friday in July sale, and my local store had the new Acer mini-LED display brand new for $599 plus an additional $30 off for TotalTech members. I snapped that up, and it's been solid so far. Super bright, very responsive, and nice color reproduction. My only real complaint is that you can't adjust the overdrive settings when FreeSync is enabled. However, in my short time playing with it, the standard normal mode seems to work just fine. I don't play competitive games nor do I have the critical eye for this stuff that someone like Tim from HardwareUnboxed does. Lastly, I also picked up a WD Black SN770 1 TB SSD for my kid's laptop. I think there's a problem with the default Windows installation where there's heavy battery drain when the machine sits unplugged even for a few hours. As such, I'm going to do a clean install of the OS plus it will have double the storage so when he's ready to expand his gaming horizons beyond Roblox, it will be ready.

Is the tablet upgradable to Android 13 in an official capacity?
-
A tablet running Android should just allow you to connect the device to a Windows PC, have it mount as external storage, then copy all the needed files. Even better, this Walmart Onn Pro has a microSD card slot that you could load with media. The tablet also has a kids mode you can enable that should prevent them from being able to access things they shouldn't. onn. 11" Tablet Pro, 128GB (2023 Model), Silver - Walmart.com

AMD blocking DLSS support for sponsored games?
saturnotaku replied to saturnotaku's topic in Tech News
DLSS requires the tensor cores that are a part of RTX GPUs. If it were possible to make DLSS function across the board, NVIDIA would have made a stink about the ability to use it on cards like the 16- and 10-series. Just like how enhanced variable refresh rate tech, such as the ability for it to operate as low as 1 Hz when FreeSync typically bottoms out around 48 Hz, is only offered on G-Sync monitors that have NVIDIA's hardware module. -
What is the most MacOS like Linux distro?
saturnotaku replied to kojack's topic in Linux / GNU / BSD
Zorin OS has the ability to be "skinned" (for lack of a better term) to look like macOS: Zorin OS - Make your computer better. -
Based on the company's responses, or lack thereof in some cases, it appears as though AMD is actively blocking developers from including support for non-FSR upscaling tech in games that they sponsor. It's pretty sad when NVIDIA comes out looking pro-consumer based on how it handled similar questions from the media.

Not sure how much you're willing to spend, but there's the SteelSeries Apex Mini wireless keyboard, Aerox 3 mouse, and one of their wireless headsets. It would be pricey all in, but at least you'd have everything within the same ecosystem.

selling FS/FT - MSI GS60-2QE Ghost Pro | 4720HQ | 970m | READ
saturnotaku replied to K4sum1's topic in Notebooks and Desktops
That hardware is 7+ years old at this point, and the fact that there are several things wrong with it means that realistically it's probably worth less than half of what you're asking. Since it's still quasi-functional, you could probably donate it and take a tax writeoff. Otherwise, take out the RAM and storage and just recycle it. -
Unfortunately there are a lot of things in macOS that require third-party software, which we take for granted in Windows and/or Linux. Setting independent scroll direction for the touchpad and a mouse is a big one that I absolutely hate. Still, I generally prefer using it over Windows and will happily switch back full-time if the AGPT takes off and/or Crossover is able to support DirectX 12 games. We're still a ways off from that happening - at least 12-18 months at this point I wager. I'm hoping by then the M3 series of processors will offer a good bump in performance with a similar number of CPU and GPU cores. I also hold out hope that there will be a revised mini-LED display for the MacBook Pro that offers faster pixel response times.

Micro Center Reveals New Locations: Charlotte and Miami
saturnotaku replied to Sandy Bridge's topic in Tech News
The costs associated with expanding to Canada are likely extremely high and not sustainable for a company the size of MicroCenter especially when Canada Computers and Memory Express already exist there. Back in the late 2000s, MC had several stores in California including at least one in Silicon Valley - I remember seeing it from Highway 101 when I would regularly travel to the area on business. I'm guessing the lone store still operating there was the only one in the state that was profitable enough to justify maintaining a presence. -
Is Apple finally taking gaming on macOS seriously?
saturnotaku replied to saturnotaku's topic in Other Manufacturers
That's probably true unless the developer entered into some sort of exclusivity agreement with Apple as Capcom appears to have done because the macOS port of Resident Evil Village isn't available outside the App Store. No Man's Sky is on Steam, though.- 42 replies

Is Apple finally taking gaming on macOS seriously?

Again, it's impressive to see these games running at all on macOS, let alone through two translation layers. I suppose the real question now is how much effort will it really take for a developer to port their game to Apple silicon? I could see CDPR making an attempt with Cyberpunk, though they may balk at having to put it on the App Store.- 42 replies

Is Apple finally taking gaming on macOS seriously?
saturnotaku replied to saturnotaku's topic in Other Manufacturers
You are correct about that, but the fact that such a tool is being made available at all is a major step forward given Apple's overall indifference toward serious gaming after the failure of the Pippin. Also, never forget that Halo was going to be a Mac exclusive prior to Bungie's acquisition by Microsoft.- 42 replies

As much as I love my Gigabyte M28U, it doesn't get bright enough for my extremely well-lit office space. As such, I moved it to my gaming nook, swapping it with my MAG274QRF-QD. One of my local Best Buys had an open box Sony Inzone M9 for a bit more than $500 so I took a flyer on it. I won't have time to set it up until Monday, but hopefully it won't have any issues.

While I personally would never use one, there are more 17- and 18-inch laptop choices available now than at any point in at least the last half decade. From a price/value perspective, the HP Omen 17 is probably the sweet spot. A version with 12th-gen i7 HX CPU and RTX 3070 Ti is available at MicroCenter for $1,200, though there has been points where's been cheaper than even that. If you're OK with spending a bit more, the current-gen Omen 17 with RTX 4080 has been seen for as low as I want to say $2,000 with coupons.

Is Apple finally taking gaming on macOS seriously?
saturnotaku posted a topic in Other Manufacturers
In my opinion, the most interesting news to come out of this year's WWDC was the introduction of its new Game Porting Toolkit, which includes a Proton-like testing environment to see if it's feasible for developers to bring their titles to macOS and specifically Apple Silicon. It's based on technology from Codeweavers' Crossover application, and the initial results look very promising. While performance leaves something to be desired, previously unplayable games like Elden Ring and Cyberpunk 2077 could now run. If this tech catches on, I will almost certainly switch back to macOS for full-time laptop use while keeping my desktop PC for more serious gaming.- 42 replies

You'll likely be waiting a very long time for D4 to go on sale. ActiBlizz games don't get discounted terribly often.

Asus is a company I want to love but I just can't. Their monitors have typically been fantastic, with the new OLED and 360 Hz 1440p IPS ones being other-worldly. I haven't had any issues with the TUF X570 that powers my current desktop after the AS(s)Rock board that I was previously using crapped out. Their gaming laptops have some of the best feeling and most responsive keyboards and trackpads. At the same time, Armoury Crate is a pile of suck that makes Razer Synapse look like it was handed down on stone tablets from the Almighty himself. Their GPUs are vastly overpriced and suffer from the worst coil whine I've ever heard. If I do end up upgrading my desktop later this year (still unlikely at this point), I'll probably switch over to MSI. My 4070 is their Ventus OC model, which runs super cool and extremely quiet.

It's been so long, but I don't think I put more than about 10 hours into D3 before uninstalling and going right back to D2.
