  1. Significant quality control problems with a Tongfang-based laptop. Surmise my surprise.
  2. If you use Edge and want to get rid of that stupid new Bing Chat Discover button that was included in the latest update, here are instructions on how to do so: How to Remove Bing Chat “Discover” Button in Microsoft Edge (howtogeek.com) I also discovered the Ultimate Windows Tweaker 5 utility, which can cover some of the telemetry that O&O Shutup10 and WindowsPrivacyDashboard might miss. It also has a bunch of other options, including bringing back Windows 10-style context menus. Ultimate Windows Tweaker 5 for Windows 11 (thewindowsclub.com)
  3. The RTX 4090 is available as a CTO option on Lenovo's website now: https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/configurator/cto/index.html?bundleId=82WQCTO1WWUS1
  4. I got it installed last night but only tried a couple games. It's the most aesthetically pleasing GPU I've personally ever seen - such a clean design and even the lighting looks cool straight out of the box. The only thing that ruins its elegance is that in order to control the RGB, you need to connect a separate cable from the card to a USB 2.0 header on your motherboard and install a software utility that's separate from the drivers. I haven't connected said cable yet, but it's going to wreck any semblance of management as the only open headers on my board are at the bottom. The driver package is also huge at over 1 GB, but it installed with no problems. I don't really play new games that much on my desktop, which wouldn't be a point in the A770's favor, but the initial results are promising. In my very brief testing, all at 1440p, Doom 2016 ran perfectly with the Vulkan API at max settings. Portal 2 was the same - no issues whatsoever. The original Deus Ex was interesting. I typically use the third-party DirectX 10 renderer, but it was a stuttering mess. However, OpenGL, which has never worked right with modern AMD or NVIDIA GPUs I've tried, is absolutely flawless with the Arc provided the frame rate is limited to 144 or less. I can even change the brightness in game, which has been broken with Team Red and Green for as long as I can remember. The graphics aren't quite as good as they are with DX10, but as long as the game plays at all, I'm content. If there's anything specific you'd like me to test, let me know and I'll try to accommodate.
  5. I caved and bought one of the MicroCenter models. This thing is fantastic - runs cool and stunningly quiet. The main thing I don't like is that all the display outputs are connected to the 4080. I wish the Thunderbolt port was connected to the iGPU, at least with Optimus enabled. Also, from a build quality perspective, while it's perfectly fine, it's more of a Legion 5 Pro+ as opposed to a true successor to the 7. That said, if the rumors of a Legion 9 are true, I would expect it to be significantly more expensive. And of course, a week after I buy it at full retail, MC discounts it by $250 so I'll need to go back to the store and get a price adjustment.
  6. I haven't let it stop me from picking one up, though I did go for the reference design. Intel has been making big improvements in driver performance and compatibility. I'm likely going to be selling my desktop this fall so I want to play with Arc before I do so.
  7. Should note that this is for the specific 8 GB ASRock Phantom Gaming model available from Newegg, not the reference 16 GB Intel-branded card. ASRock Phantom Gaming Arc A770 Video Card A770 PGD 8GO - Newegg.com
  8. There are a bunch of Lenovo IdeaPad options in that screen size that should fit within your budget.
  9. Considering no one here works for either Asus or the retailers, you're not going to get an answer to that question. Set an in-stock alert on various websites and buy as soon as you get a notification that it's available. The integrators (Maingear, Eluktronics, et al), likely order these chassis in bulk but aren't going to have the resources to do a deep QC dive on every single unit they receive. While you could argue that the sellers need to do better about testing, the buck ultimately stops with the company that is supplying the components in the first place.
  10. I've owned four different Tongfang-based laptops and all of them had at least one significant quality control issue ranging from dead pixels to defective trackpads.
  11. If you can live with the size, your best bet might be one of the new Alienware M18 models since Dell offers international warranty coverage, something neither Lenovo nor HP offer on their gaming laptops. The alternative would be to purchase from a system integrator like HIDevolution that has its own extra-cost global service package for any model you buy from them. You pay a premium for both the laptop and extra warranty, but you have a much wider variety of laptops to choose from.
  12. MicroCenter just received its own version of the Pro 7i with RTX 4080. For $2899, you get 2 TB of storage as discrete 1 TB units instead of RAID-0 like in older models plus an upgrade to Windows 11 Pro. Lenovo Legion Pro 16IRX8H 16" Gaming Laptop Computer - Onyx Grey; Intel Core i9 13th Gen 13900HX 1.6GHz Processor; - Micro Center
  13. You've been a member of NBR and this forum for how long and you don't know that 99.99% of GPUs are soldered to the motherboard on laptops?
  14. Has there been an update that enables Type-C power delivery on this laptop? Despite the spec sheet saying PD 3.0 is supported, folks who own the unit say that it doesn't work.
  15. AMD strikes back: Ryzen 9 7945HX beats Intel Core i9-13980HX despite much lower power consumption - NotebookCheck.net News This is very impressive and makes me eager to see what lesser models are capable of. I'm likely getting out of the traditional gaming laptop scene and into a smaller form factor device that can play on the side. Something like a Lenovo Slim 7 Pro X with a Ryzen 7035 and RTX 4050 would have my interest.
  16. My enthusiasm for RTX 4000 is an inverse bell curve. On the low end, I'm excited to see what the 4050 can do in small/thin-and-light laptops that aren't necessarily designed for gaming. I'm hoping it will appear in models like the Lenovo Slim 7/7i Pro X. The 4060 and 4070 aren't doing anything for me especially since 3070 Ti models will perform the same or better in games without DLSS frame generation while being significantly cheaper right now. The 4080 and 4090 are pretty solid and will be even more so once the discounts start rolling in.
  17. Bought a Gigabyte M28U (4K/144 Hz) to use in my new home office. The colors look nice, and it's decently responsive even refresh rates lower than maximum. Plus, if I decide to game on my downtime I can use 1080p with integer scaling with no loss in image sharpness. My only complaints are 1) the lack of tilt adjustment on the stand and 2) overall brightness is not the best. Still, for $530 on sale, it's sold for a high-resolution, high-refresh display.
  18. 3070 Ti vs 4070 - the only real improvement the 40-series realizes is from the use DLSS frame generation. Otherwise, the two GPUs are pretty much equal, at least when comparing models with maximum power limits (140W for the 4070 and 150W for the 3070 Ti).
  19. Not that I would advise ordering from B&H, but they list the 4090-equipped Pro 7i as "coming soon" for $3299. Lenovo 16" Legion Pro 7 16IRX8H Gaming Laptop 82WQ002TUS B&H (bhphotovideo.com) That being the case, I expect it to become available directly from Lenovo in the near future as well.
  20. The new Eluktroncs MECH 17 can be purchased with an RTX 4090 but no RAM, SSD, or Windows license for $2999.
  21. The Asus Zenbook is the only dual-screen device that's reasonably functional/practical as a laptop.
  22. What has me most excited is that apparently you can now set a maximum battery charge limit on these laptops. If this is true, it should all but eliminate the battery bloating issues.
  23. I won't order through Dell because the last 4 times I attempted to do so, they cancelled without explanation despite having direct authorization from my credit card company as well as verified PayPal. I also have BB TotalTech so I get 2 years of ADH coverage baked in and 60-day returns. I'll just wait until the first round of discounts as it will give more time for additional models to start making their way to the store. Maybe I'll see an Asus or some other brand I like more.
  24. Around US$700-800 depending on if there's any warranty remaining.
