I'm hopefully not going to get a laptop real soon, but I'm trying to keep my eyes open for when I do. It looks like the best options currently are this X170KM-G and the slightly older X170SM-G. But the difficulty you all are having with the X170KM-G is not at all encouraging - is there any light at the end of the tunnel?

That photo is awesome! I was actually having a hard time with scale from your other pictures and this makes it really clear. Very nice design and very acceptable dimensions in my opinion. It looks like you are really on the right track and you are definitely covering a niche that does not have much attention at all (surprisingly so!). Can't wait to see your first prototype - it will be well worth the wait! -
I think Eurocom is a Clevo (and other?) reseller - but they are pretty cagy about which Clevo model each system is based off of. I think the Raptor X15 uses a BGA GPU. The Sky Z7 R2 I think is MXM 3.x - definitely a Clevo but I'm not sure which model. The latest Clevo DTR socketed system I think is the X170KM-G. This can get really pricey configured with a high end 3080 GPU - like $3.5K USD... It's not well advertised that this has an MXM socketed GPU (only one or two resellers mention this explicitly), though the socketed CPU is apparent in most descriptions. Fortunately the service manual clarifies this and is available from Shenker here: https://download.schenker-tech.de/package/xmg-ultra-17-id-xul17e21/ But the forum comments on this site for the X170KM-G are not at all encouraging - people are having a very difficult time getting this laptop to behave. From what little I've read there are a bugs to sort through and (as always) major cooling issues requiring nerfing the hardware with TS etc. The X170SM-G thread is a lot quieter by comparison for that older and very similar model. I would hope that this is early days with this laptop - but that assumes Clevo will kick in with some support work. The rumor I've heard but can't at all verify is that Clevo is moving away from socketed DTR systems which is definitely sad... I hope they at least sort things out with this laptop...

I'm sure you don't need more ideas 😉 But this proof-of-concept was useful to me to see the type of puzzle you have to solve to get all the components under the hood. Even the producer of this video admits you shouldn't do what he did! 🤣 Definitely not travel worthy even with a single monitor (and it's huge). I'm not really sure how he scores as far as cooling goes, but it looks like it has liquid cooling...? -

I had to look up Captain Slug's Caliburn project and I see where you're coming from. Open source design is a very cool thing. I haven't gotten into 3D printing yet - that's kind of on my todo list though... -

Yeah, I figured you'd be steeped in this type of build culture - very cool thing to be into! I'm with you in terms of design criteria - I'm really surprised there isn't a single low profile "SFF" enclosure that comes with an attached LCD let alone keyboard! I did see some cool enclosures - like the NFC S4M - but having to travel with a keyboard and display isn't what I'm looking for either! 😃 -

Obviously I'm a total n00b with this stuff, but I did come across the "small form factor" community wiki here: https://wiki.sff.media/ It looks like they are really targeting living room compute options. I have yet to see a really nice slim case with built in display and keyboard like what you're working on. -

I know a few people have built "briefcase" computer builds. I've seen pictures on reddit but I can't quite figure out how cooling works. I pasted a link to one below. In that case though your computer is a bag as opposed to a computer build that could conceivably fit inside a bag. Briefcase computing has a bunch of options on the commercial side - if any of them support a GPU I'm betting that would be in a big enclosure. I briefly considered getting one of these: http://www.ipctechnology.com/index.html -

That is amazing. I guess the water cooling worries me a little - it would be a fairly big bummer if a leak sprung, but maybe that isn't too likely? But yeah a desktop 3070 and ryzen CPU sounds pretty awesome. Should out perform a lot of high end laptops I think. -

Weight doesn't worry me these days, but size can be an issue. Honestly those dimensions sound pretty good. I also appreciate how this is a hard design problem with cooling and power considerations among other things. Do you think making a chassis that can take some pressure would be difficult? Would it help to replace some parts of the chassis with aluminum? (that is once you're totally happy with the overall design - 3D printing is just too good an approach I think). -
Really outstanding! Amazing work keeping that laptop going strong for 10 years - it looks great it sounds like it performs well too. Really can't ask for more than that!

Well, I can't wait to see how this turns out. What do you estimate the W x L x H dimensions are like? Is the box about 3" thick or so? Great work! -
I'm really glad the BGA bashing thread made a comeback! 🤣 BGA is an annoyance when it's in the wrong context. BGA for my phone doesn't bother me so long as the phone can last a few years. I do own 2 BGA laptops - one is 9 years old and the other is nearly 6 years old and they are doing fine. I'm honestly hoping I won't have to buy a laptop any time soon, but if I do it will be a tough decision. Again I'll rely on the folks here to steer me right as I believe you all did back in 2016 for my Clevo! 😄 BGA yes, but they got the cooling right and that makes a difference. If I'd understood the difference at the time I would have bought a socketed system. But honestly at this point I'd rather build a desktop and sink some money into that, then remote display from one of my old laptops when I need to be remote.

This is an awesome project. I was really wondering what the limits are for building a portable mini itx system with a laptop form factor. Can't wait to see what the final system looks like! -
Well I installed nvidia driver 472.12 using NVCleanstall and it appears to work okay - I haven't run it through it's paces yet. I think the issue with the 512.15 driver may be that it requires a clean install, but I'm not sure. I did notice that it is only available as a DCH driver.

I hope you don't mind if I start a thread in the style of the old notebookreview thread: *** Official Clevo P65xRS(-G), P65xRP6(-G) / Sager NP8153(-S), NP8152(-S) Owner's Lounge *** I own a 2016 P650RS-G. I did have to replace the keyboard (several letters got worn down beyond recognition), I upgraded the Intel wifi card and I added another Samsung M.2 SSD, but that's about it. The only issue I ran into recently was upgrading the nvidia driver 512.15 released 3/22/22. The latest driver update left with with a blank screen that wouldn't go away. Several forced reboots and an attempt at a driver downgrade left me with a botched system. I had to do a Windows reset from my restoration thumb drive (which fortunately I found). And now I'm back to the nvidia 368.83 driver from around 2016. Anyone know if there are more recent drivers that are better for this system?
