  1. That is something I haven't seen from the days I had a PCI Voodoo Banshee in my Pentium Desktop. I remember this setting when I set the resolution too high! Might be the culprit of bad Video Ram, or wrong capacity ram chips. Your GPU might be refurbished with other ram chips that the total amount is less than 8GB, as it should be. A closer look at what the ram chips have on them, could help indicating the problem. Before disassembly, try even older drivers. Go for a 35x.xx vesrion.
  2. I would suggest using official drivers. Modded drivers may contain settings not suitable for custom projects, like the one you are facing.
  3. Might if I suggest something. Before calling the GPU a scrap, might try an older set of drivers. Like a set from 4xx series or even from 35x series where the 1070 got first introduced (if I am not mistaken). Randomly crasing to desktop seems like a power issue or a driver issue. Rarely a Hardware issue. Use DDU to remove any drivers and try to edit the older ones and not use NVinstaller. I am speculating the card in not getting enough power, that is why it is failing. Also all of the above GPU suggestions will not work. They are not in standard MXM 3.0 format and maybe they will run in clearence issues, or improper heatsink installation. Best avoid.
  4. I believe the write up is correct. Please post resutls because I am hasitating to buy a GPU from AliExpress. I also have an SLI with dual 980m. Also Blindflash is not slang. It is literally a Blind Flash because you cannot see anything in the process. You only follow steps and hear beeps till it boots (or not😄).
  5. 4. Do not set it to SG if you have SLI. If you do, you might get 8 or 5 beeps. If you have SLI set it to iGFX (the internal gpu). After this, if something goes wrong and you need to downgrade to A03, you have to remove the 1070 because if it is successful, you will get 8 beeps and it might trick you that the process failed. Just remove completely any gpu, downgrade to A03 and let it boot with the internal graphics.
  6. Everything @Maxware79 write is true. I am only stating in order to flash the unlocked A12 you must already be at the official Dell A12. if you have updated to the latest (I think A14) you need to downgrade to official A12. We never had the issue to downgrade, because the time the 1070 came out, and people tried it, A12 was already the latest. You can try to flash A12 over a later version but it might fail, or it might work. I don't know because I never had a 18. If it fails, you need to blindflash the A03 bios through the "recovery" method. Search for alienware bios recovery method. After you downgrade to A03, you can flash the A12 official and lastly the A12 unlocked. Having finished all the above steps, remove the current drivers with DDU, reboot and set the bios to SG. Then you can install the 1070.
  7. Important part is the prepetation. I have a M18x R2 so the process is almost similar. The trickiest part I belive is to downgrade to A12 unlocked if you have a higher version. Just flashing an older version over an earlier version can cause problems (I think!)
  8. Try doing a DDU and intalling the 336 driver. After this do an upgrade without clean install to the latest driver and see what will get you. I updated mine from NVinstall to the latest 531 and it seems to work ok. Could be a hardware problem though...
  9. As I said, I haven't got this issue, and possibly we are the only ones to still run SLI systems, I can only say that now I have 512.95 version. Perhaps try this version instead? I am running Prema Vbios, But I also had Dell Vbios from the Alienware 18 model and never had this issue. So maybe trying the 512.95 version to see if the problem is there? Or maybe the last supported driver for our systems 419.17?
  10. Maybe try another OS. Try running Ubuntu from CD or even Chrome Flex OS and see if the problem persists. Both of the can run without installing them to your hard drive. I belive you have made a clean install to the drivers with DDU, prior installing anything?
  11. Weird. First time I've ever seen this. I also have an 980m SLI. Mine is a m18x R2 though. Seems the problem is following the GPUs. Maybe Since you disabled SLI and the problem is there, maybe the GPU in slot one has the problem. Swap them maybe, or flash a different vbios. Flash the one from DELL to see if that makes a difference
  12. First of all, is there an A15 unlocked bios for the M18X R2? Second, try the blind flash method, posted in another post. Most of BIOS problems regarding wrong settings, fix with the blind flash method!
  13. 980m, 8GB non gsync. paid 250 for mine from inside EU.
  14. Now that I have my SLI back again, here is my benchmark https://www.3dmark.com/3dm/79898071 That is with the throttle off method and the dual PSU mod. Power draw was 550Watts, reading it from my mod display. And a second one, with the CPU overclocked to 3,9GHz, using the overclock settings from here https://www.3dmark.com/3dm/79924811
  15. Same here. I have 980m (980m sli now) and couldn't get past 65Hz, so I gave up. I run them in PEG mode, but it didn't help that. Also tried out from nvidia control panel, still a no go!
  16. It can work though. But in SG mode, through advanced settings, after flashing an unlocked BIOS. No SLI though!
  17. I found a clevo one through ebay. Luckily it was inside EU. Now I have a very expensive obsolete technology on my M18x R2
  18. An effort was taking place back in NBR forums to remove 'functions' from R1 bios to incorporate the UEFI portions to make R1 work with 900 series. But i can't remember who was involved or to which level this job was extened. It would have been a miracle to get a 900 series work on a AW m18x R1.
  19. This is the process for the M18x R1 and R2. I suppose it could work for the 18. Just download the correct bios for your laptop Download the original Alienware unmodded A03 bios from Dell at Drivers and Downloads | Dell [united States] The file is named "M18R2A03WIN" Extract the contents of M18R2A03WIN to a new folder named "Alienware recovery" anywhere on your useable computer. In there you should have a bunch of files. (9 in total) Look for the one called QBR10EC.fd Rename this file to M18R2.hdr Place the file M18R2.hdr on a formatted fat32 usb stick on its own. Thats it. Blind created Recovery process: To do the recovery process you need to remove your m18x r2 battery. Unplug the back power cord as well Plug the usb stick with the file M18R2.hdr in the M18X's e-sata port Now hold down the END key (located above the numbers key pad) at the same time while your holding the END key plug in the power cord only, you will hear the fans turn on full bolt. Release the end key and wait After a few seconds once the file is read from the USB stick you will hear 20 or 30 beeps (sounds like a garbage truck reversing) After the beeps stop the m18x will shut down and reboot itself. ( 1 or 2 times depending) Once reboot all will be back to normal A03 bios. Connect the battery back if you wish after successful boot.. That's all folks, things should work now unless you bricked the EC controller, which is hard to do Found this on Techinferno. Credits go to the user Scott Matusow and his post from 2012. Take note that if you have a 980m or later gpu, flash A11 before installing your GPU, or you will have to disassemble again.
  20. I can wait till then😄
  21. That is exacty what went downhill. Though there is a setting, maybe hardware-wise it isn't possible, and the laptop just doesn't know what to do. Either forward this information to the guy you sent it, to try it by himself, or maybe replace your bios chip with a working one. I see no other solution to it. Blindflash our bios was a 'thing' back in the day, when swick first gave us his unlocked bios to finaly use 980m on our machines. I belive that time was a braking point were this old dinosaur of laptops, would be futureproof. Hope you fix it. It is by far, a simple procedure to fix it, if you get it right.
  22. I am sorry it hasn't worked for you. Try again with patience. I know I failed to do this process when I needed to, because I was frustrated from all the teardown. I had the laptop in pieces in front of me. Only essential parts are needed, if I can remember. No hard drive, no dvd drive, a stick of ram, no gpus, the screen was just simply connected to the board. It took me a couple of tries to do it. I don't believe you risk a brick because if you succeed you will have a board with tha A03 bios, or with the original bios. Also I remeber it is tricky to connect the usb to the esata port. If 'feels' wrong to do it!
  23. Here is what I got. Download the original Alienware unmodded A03 bios from Dell at Drivers and Downloads | Dell [united States] The file is named "M18R2A03WIN" Extract the contents of M18R2A03WIN to a new folder named "Alienware recovery" anywhere on your useable computer. 24. I have to dig in to my notes. Messing with the settings for the intergrated GPU causes this. We had many cases on the old forum. I did it once for myself and saved my mobo. The process is similar to Maxware79, BUT. To blindflash you need the A03 version of the Bios, none other will work. Also have the USB stick formated to Fat32 and it has to be inserted to the esata port. Yes, that one. Plese give me time to find my notes in the old laptop. I belive it can b fixed.
  25. Then I believe you are ready to go. Please post results here. I would like to see how it will perform!
