MSI 1070 Longevity? Aetina 1070 Viability?
Reciever replied to Naberius's topic in Alienware 17 and M17x
The MSI 1070 has to deal with a lot of heat around the VRM's since they are packed neatly in a single line. I used to get shutdowns on the 17 R1 until I added some heatsinks to the passive end of the heatsink assembly so it wouldnt surprise me if running them hot for prolonged periods of time would cause what would otherwise be premature failure. -
Apple switching to USB-C: Yay or Nay?
Reciever replied to Sandy Bridge's topic in Mobile Devices & Gadgets
Im sure there will be some scorn for the USB 2.0 bit and the 15 but from what I understand that is due to the chipset? -
Precision M6800 questions and upgrades

The Ranger 17 R1 and P157SMA are both HM87, different chipset. its only a guess but seems to line up for now. -
Precision M6800 questions and upgrades
Reciever replied to Jers6410's topic in Pro Max & Precision Mobile Workstation
It did well for me at the time in my t440p, let me downclock pretty aggressively and get around 10-11 hours out of the t440p when I was actively using it work. From my testing, any QM87 chipset should work. M4800, M6800, E5540, t440p all accepted the chip without issue. Alienware 17 R1, P157SMA both wouldnt post. Need to find someone to send the chip off to repair the pins that broke off, maybe one of those techrepair youtubers. -
Precision M6800 questions and upgrades
Reciever replied to Jers6410's topic in Pro Max & Precision Mobile Workstation
They will work, though I think I tested on LVDS variant. You lose the mDP port on the T440p so Im not sure if that will persist since the t440p doesnt have an option where the dGPU is wired to the display. I have one but 3 pins broke off when removing it from the M6800, it was really stuck in there, I still have the 3 pins as well just lack the tools and motivation since it doesnt work in my P157SMA (different chipset). -

Not a laptop, not ideal since memory is what gets roasted, not the GPU. Better to just put in some cash than to mine. Even with a 4090 you'd be mining at a loss, and its no better than a 3090 in that regard. -

I could mine right now since my power is free from 8pm - 6am but it's a lot of hassle. Mining already got me some pc stuff and the 3090 the rest is just sitting until it hits the right value to sell. These are meant to be VM sandboxes since professional development should yield higher returns than mining would. I still have a couple more precision T7810 towers that I could retrofit for mining but I would have to go through and setup schedules and timers to make sure it mines only at the right times, the right coins. I will still do that when winter is in full swing to warm up the house. When it comes to home labs, really anything will do. What I have is overkill at the moment. -

Yeah the 1K vBIOS did well for benchmarking last winter, I still have it for this year when I try swapping the fans out to force the temps lower, plan to do the same thing to the other cards I have where it makes sense to do so. I'll look forward to when you can share that vBIOS :) -

Where can I source that vBIOS? I did try the 1000w vBIOS but it also introduced odd behaviors during gaming so I went back to the standard vBIOS for my card. Most I usually pull is around 500w depending on the title of course. -

Not really surprising since Nvidia themselves stated that they are limiting supply to keep demand higher by extension justify the higher price tag. Personally I wont be upgrading for a while, 3090 still plays everything I want @1440p144hz. Even then, my gaming time has gone down a bit since I am working on professional enrichment these days. -

Got two of these up and running this weekend. Putting in an earnest effort to setting up a virtual sandbox with hopes of gpu pass through in the future. I didn't like seeing 5x 5700xt's just collecting dust so it's turning into an interesting project. Goals are professionally focused for now though. Want to set up an sccm/mdt server to test deployments to various systems. I also have 6x hp t630's I may try my hand at HA or clustering but that will be a little further off. -
I believe you can do that on your own :) Left click and hold and it should be come "edit-able".

Oh that looks right up my alley. FEAR and DOOM vibes looks perfect as an after work stress reliever, thanks for the tip! -
I got the second adapter in and ran into the same issue, only 1 NVME drive would show up. Then I realized the BIOS revision was still in A02, latest being A34 iirc. BIOS updated and now the drives are showing up.

Of course you post an article about ocing an SBC lol If I can get one i'll try out OCing, I can probably put the M.2 heatsink on it since its good for up to 70w :D -

I mean its not often you can have independent controllers for every USB port :) -
It may be that this particular adapter I have doesnt work well with the system. Doing a bit more research I did find a product that supposedly works in the 7810 so I went ahead and purchased that should be here around Saturday

Is it bad that I have more interest in the raspberry pi 5 announcement? To be faie though I have a project in mind for it that I've been wanting to flesh out for a while now. -

Wow. So much for the last OS from Microsoft. Even then mpcie probably still has enough bandwidth to handle wifi 7 at typical use cases. -

They probably figure if you spend 2 grand on a GPU, you have 10-15 USD to spend on an adapter if you want it. Im glad my 3090 still carries my games, I have no problem spending money on other stuff that I probably shouldnt be spending on anyways. I miss the days when board partners would do something cool, like the 4850X2 or the GTX 460 2WIN and lastly the Wireless GTX 460. I know that the suppliers (AMD/Nvidia) are mostly to blame for that though. -
Good Evening everyone! I have recently re-engaged with a VM sandbox now that I finally found an image that seems to work with my T7810 Precision. Currently working off of ESXi 6.7 Update 3, anything newer doesnt seem to finish installation. I also have a PCIe to 4x NVME adapter that is currently populated with some NVME drives I was hoping to use for this sandbox. 2x 1TB, 1x 512GB and 1x 256GB of various makes/models. The issue at hand is that only 1 NVME drive being detected, the other 3 dont seem to register in ESXi. From what I had read there is no setting to explicitly enable PCie bifurcation and that its supposed to work "automatically" upon detection. The PCIe adapter is currently sitting in the second full length PCIe slot. Anyone got any ideas for what I should try out? I might try resetting the BIOS to defaults and see if that prompts any changes. Thanks in advance!

Yes it looks like those sites sell the Pi 4B 4GB for 55 USD as well. In the mean time I am thinking of trying to run one of these in a VM on my ESXi box, no idea if it work though

Maybe its a per case sub-reddit kind of thing, like people didnt like the idea of Doom sub-reddit being ran by people employed by bethesda and I think that also came up when LTT/GN conflict flared up. I dont use reddit, it never made much sense to me. Once a friend was asking me to use a "mod" to "make reddit easier to use" is right about the time I dropped off.
