  1. You could also consider eGPU since what you are aiming for is going to be largely GPU bound. Then later build a desktop around it when the laptop no longer suits the need. I would see what the performance is like over TB3/4 first. No idea on next gen, my 3090 still takes care of my gaming needs to quite a large extent. There is also no shame in not getting anything at all, you arent using this system to make money so its essentially entertainment only.
  2. If you are keen on Geforce now then there isnt a need for a desktop
  3. Steer the topic back towards desktops fellas or join the banter in the AI thread.
  4. No problem, in the future you can just hide them. In effect the same :)
  5. It was actually my original plan when I first bought in with the 2700x/x570 board. Hold the board until what ever chip was the last for the platform and just sit on it for a few years. That was in 2019 and I only recently got the 5800X3D when it dropped to 275. It keeps my 3090 fed pretty darn well so far. Probably only Sons of the Forest is where I notice CPU/GPU not being fully taxed, likely others as well but that was the worst offender thus far.
  6. If I recall correctly 980M's did have a habit of dying out after a certain period of time. Based on those pictures the card looks to be ok, sometimes you can get the obvious signs of something blowing out with discoloration of the solder points. @Maxware79 has had much more experience than I working with Alienware systems, might be able to give a more informed opinion. might also want to not rule out a dying AC adapter. If the system is unable to boot in PEG mode (or dGPU mode) then you might want to try and see if you can boot the system with SG mode. If you decide to try this yourself there shouldnt be any harm but what ever you do, do not boot IGFX especially if you have the 120hz panel. If it works then you might be able to get some diagnostic information like for example if the driver installs, what kind of sensor read outs you have (hwinfo64 or something similar) The 980m looks to be around 200 USD or 175 for the M5000M (quadro version of the 980m) There is also the MSI 1070 which goes for similar pricing right now so it may be worth considering your options pending how much the repair tech might want to charge you for the effort.
  7. Split your post into its own topic. As for your question, have you done any visual inspection of the card?
  8. The 5800X3D and RTX 3090 are still doing quite well for me in pretty much all the things that I throw at it, now I am gaming at 3440x1440 as opposed to 2560x1440 that I was doing before and still havent felt like my 3090 was lacking in any meaningful way. If anything I think I need what is called a Line Conditioner, as when the power consumption starts creeping up into the 500w on the GPU my monitor begins to flicker lol. I stopped being lazy and just set an FPS limit / Vsync for 144hz, sometimes 120hz pending the type of gameplay at hand. I am looking into using Sunshine and Moonlight for the Remote VM Gaming system but now it looks like Im going to have a new room mate so I need to move everything back up stairs (again).
  9. Very true. I have been screwed too many times on the high dollar items on sites like ebay. The best defense imho is time. The more time people invest into their internet handles the less inclined they would be to burn those handles for a quick buck.
  10. Thats all well and good but shortly before NBR was closed down, a member was scammed out a few grand over a clevo laptop. Payment method was PP F&F. Its why that trust must be established between individuals, why as the administrator I cant easily condone it. I am not a fan of Paypal generally, since its typically used to scam me in private sales. It (and other services similar to it) have its place where appropriate.
  11. You can more or less look at it like PP F&F and not be off base. While as this forums administrator I cant easily condone its use, what people do in private transactions is their business as long as its legal.
  12. They change their rules over at OCN? DIdnt know Zelle was permitted. I had that model 3080, punchy card!
  13. Created thread for @ryan If I missed any posts that need to be moved, please PM me with the relevant links. Thanks
  14. Post removed @kojack Needlessly inflammatory posts that serve no purpose will be removed. If certain points of conversation are not as valued to you personally then there is no harm in simply stating as such. Insulting members of the community does not serve the discussion. Thanks for your continued understanding. @aldarxt If anyone would like to continue the discussion of mobile devices please feel free to do so.
  15. LG's biggest problem is lack of support for their own devices. You might get 1, 2 updates before they move on to something else. I used the V20 for years despite that since the model I had worked in Korea as well (Dual SIM) but ATT's device cutoff did not allow that SKU even if that model was supported. Even proved it worked fine when the sales guy put in his SIM card, it wasnt that they couldnt, just that they wouldnt. I really wanted the V60 but not supporting their own devices as well as exiting the market lead me away from it. I went without a phone for 5-6 months since it put a really bad taste in my mouth. To be fair, I've had issues on Apple devices but I usually split that between iOS and User Error vs Android where its usually hardware / Carrier problems in my experience. Last Apple device was crashing apps but that was quite some time ago.
  16. Congrats on your accomplishments and goals! I've been in a bad place mentally and have begun thinking its due to my work environment. In hindsight of course it is, in the moment it was easy to conclude that I dont measure up. I have been trying to hold out for the appropriate time but that is proving more difficult as time progresses.
  17. I was basically conned into the 7 Pro really, was not happy about it but fighting it would've been cost prohibitive mentally. Pixel 6 kept losing WiFi connection at home and on occasion would lose cellular requiring a reboot to get it back. Reaching out to Google support, they asked me to factory reset the phone which coming from an IT background annoys me. No diagnostic and straight to the nuclear option, probably shouldnt have expected any better. They were running a promo to get 600 off of the list price of a Pixel device and I did have an upgrade available so I figured why not try a different model. Instead they only gave me 120 and I have the same issues as before on the 7 Pro. For my home router I can now more or less resolve this with DHCP reservation (or Static IP) but on the go I still have to restart the device. No idea if that issue is Pixel or ATT, or some combination of both to lay blame. Not really a pixel problem, more of a cell phone sales problem which is its own can of worms, but I digress. I do wish Custom ROMs didnt more or less die off :( Im thinking i'll try Samsung next time around as I can make good use of DEX which Google explicitly disables on their devices (Not Dex, but USB Alt mode's) in favor of chromecast.
  18. Image replies are not allowed (posting just an image in response to a question) @kojack Posts merged and/or removed. @Etern4l No vendor is beyond reproach in terms of criticism, each have their own pro's and con's further to the point its also what makes discussing them interesting since each have their own selling points juxtaposed against the needs individual consumer is looking to satisfy.
  19. @ryan Make a dedicated thread for your build and continue that discussion there please.
  20. Send me a PM with a parts/price and even if I cant pick it up immediately, my coworker might be interested and while you'll still have it then I can snag it if the timing works out like it had last time.
  21. Looks like I might need to get ahead and try and offload some stuff to be ready for when it drops lol I mean a 10850K @ 5.0 will do some heavy work for a game server / Headless VM Remote Gaming host but a 13900K? In fact might put that up on the forum to pay homage to your own excellent price and pay it forward to the next lucky owner. How much RAM are you figuring to ship with this kit? Open bench so E-ATX is no factor
  22. Not the correct thread to be making that sort of request.
  23. Perhaps the additional charges didnt have strong enough evidence? no idea personally.
  24. Should work with what ever the chipset will permit, so it wouldnt surprise me if you saw some xeons out in the wild. Its just uncommon since thats not exactly what most people would intend to use them with.
