Yeah I've seen your post already. I tried to replicate it but did not work, IGFX just disables completely MXM card on my setup.
-
Oh does it? I tested RTX3k & 4k on AW18 and neither did. That's weird! But 3060m 12GB definitely does, although to a lesser extent than RTX3k from PNY.
-
well that's really weird? Did you tweak anything?? Cause every other person that tried PNY RTX3k on AW 17/18 reported heavy throttling Same happens with RTX 3060 12GB, but to a lesser extent (reduces core & mem frequency accordingly and not only mem frequency as the PNY RTX3k) I've never seen any Pascal card (1060 / 1070 /p3k /p4k/p5k) throttle on AW18 / 17. Don't know about 1080 / Px200
-
Hi, HP RTX cards DO NOT THROTTLE on Alienware 17 or 18 But Aetina/PNY RTX 3000 throttle a lot (usually RAM is capped at 200Mhz or so at full load)

alienware m18x r2 motherboard quick fix boardview file
sliderfra replied to Maro97's topic in Alienware 18 and M18x
hi, thank you. I already got schematics, I'd like to get the boardview 🙂 -
there's no point using SLI / Crossfire cards anymore. One is more than enough. Fan control can be tricked on dell / alienware via hwinfo or speedfan. Unlocked bios is not necessary but I strongly advise to flash it as it will give you hidden possibilities
-
hi, yes it should work ok. But R1 is picky (as m17x R3). Best is to favour 7970m / 8970m / R9 m290x without enduro vbios. Just to be sure...

New MXM cards finally work in EDP only laptops
sliderfra replied to sliderfra's topic in Alienware 18 and M18x
Yes AW18 ans M18x are lvds But m17x r4 and AW17 have edp options 🙂 -
Will most probably work on: - Alienware M17x r4 and 17 R1 with edp screens - dell m4/6700, m4/6800, precision 7710 / 20 - all Clevo lineup ranging from p771zm to P775tm (X170 may work too) - msi gt72, gt73 series - Hp zbook g1 to g6, elitebooks 8770, 8570 - other whitebooks or derived laptops with mxm

Finally the new RTX MXM cards will work in our laptops!
sliderfra replied to SuperMG's topic in Components & Upgrades
Hi. No AW 18 is LVDS unfortunately -
-
We all thought that RTX cards only worked with optimus enabled laptops. With a bit of digging (thanks @SuperMG) and testing, we can definity assume cards such as RTX (Turing, ada...) do work with edp only laptops provided they have DP_D or EDP lanes on the MXM port. Baseline: concept (thank you SuperMG): https://notebooktalk.net/topic/2195-rtx-3080-in-m18xr2-should-i-do-it-lol/page/9/ How to: On clevo P870, solder MXM lanes 23 25 27 (PNL PW et BL) to 3.3V_RUN (via mxm lanes or directly on motherboard) https://ibb.co/QjD3p5pQ We tested on 3.3VS and it did not work perfect (sometimes random black screen) https://ibb.co/sJQ8D5Hs Proof of work: Test with SuperMG RTX4070 MXM https://ibb.co/zT1FTxQZ Test with my Quadro RTX 3000 PNY (Adlink): https://ibb.co/zVjrWmgp https://ibb.co/mVBfdVnc Drawbacks: - brightness control don’t work (stays in full brightness) - requires soldering skills. But SuperMG is working on a flat ribbon that would do the wire trick without any solder skills. - drivers still need modding (nvidia at least) thus secure boot might fail.

Precision M6800 questions and upgrades

unfortunately I don't have any m6800 nor m6700 lying around. Price would be 250€ + postage I guess. -
Precision M6800 questions and upgrades
sliderfra replied to Jers6410's topic in Pro Max & Precision Mobile Workstation
That's the one. I still got one available for sale if needed 🙂 -
As both 278/280 pins are 3.3v & the 3 others are BL pins (that need 3.3V), you may solder blob the 278+280 & 23/25/27 then solder a single wire between them. I think that the easiest solution. One might even put a switch if mod is not needed to revert to standard specs. EDIT: you need to check schematics as MXM pinout on laptop might not be exactly the same. If you solder 3.3V on GND pin you end up with a dead short

Precision M6800 questions and upgrades
sliderfra replied to Jers6410's topic in Pro Max & Precision Mobile Workstation
was PNY RTX 3k (standard mxm layout). I tested it on both m6700 & m6800 in optimus mode (hybrid graphics) and it worked nicely. I need to check if I still have screenshot somewhere. -
I tested on my AW18 with unlocked bios, and same thing: if I set IGFX, dgpu is deactivated, and does not appear in BIOS or in windows anymore :/ I genuinely don't know how the TDP trick worked for you

mxm gpu upgrade Dell Precison M6800 MxM GPU
sliderfra replied to MelonicOverlord's topic in Pro Max & Precision Mobile Workstation
P5000 is 16GB VRAM, and is almost the same as GTX1080 in terms of cuda cores. RTX3k is 6GB VRAM, and strictly the same as 2060 RTX mobile. If you have edp screen, P5k is much better than RTX3k. If you have LVDS, thus using optimus, I think it's a tie. HP RTX cards needs deep chassis & heatsink mod to fit. Avoid them unless you are ready to dig in dremel & soldering iron... -
Precision M6800 questions and upgrades
sliderfra replied to Jers6410's topic in Pro Max & Precision Mobile Workstation
hi, Pascal quadros are the best if you have EDP screen on your m6800. If you have LVDS (optimus), you may try RTX 3000 from ADLINK that works nicely. That one is standard mxm layout. -
Hi, Clevo card won't post, as it needs additional voltage that is not in the standard MXM. You will burn the card if you don't mod the mxm connector, and most probably your mxm slot as well. @Khenglish did a mod a few years ago on his Clevo P150 IIRC, but that was quite complicated to do... It was well documented on NBR back in the days, and can possibly be recovered on the archives: https://www.nbrchive.net/

it's panel Backlight PWM, should PWM is used on the LCD (quite seldom, unless it's OLED display)
-
As you'll be cuffed with 2 RAM sticks DDR3, there's no point. Rather go for 4930mx & 32GB RAM. Igpu is not needed anyway on that kind of laptop.
