I have an Aetins GTX 1080 that I can't get to work on m17xr4 and m18xr2. It worked for about an hour and then I got code 43 and couldn't do anything else. I purchased an RTX 3000 and it works great in both. Also have an HP RTX 4000 could only fit in m18xr2 but I flashed the vBios and now I can't get it to work. The RTX 3000 is $359 on ebay I think that would be the best choice

Hey @rusvon are you getting this?
-
Yeah, It's a sad road we're on with laptops, I'm glad I don't NEED to have the latest cutting edge tech, and this is just a hobby for me, so I can deal with older, slower and obsolete LOL

I cant find any info on the difference between 1f36 and 1f76 type of cards. I tried using 1f36 on my RTX 3000 and it would not install, the 1f76 went no problem
-
So why would I go with an EDP instead of LVDS? Don't more cards work with LVDS and there is a 2nd screen connector next to the 1 being used. I don't remember what that 1 is for. Since RTX 3000/4000/5000 all work with LVDS or in order to have higher screen HZ it has to be EDP?

Yeah I like the idea of a blank capacitor pad than an existing mosfet. The blank still has voltage in the circuitry and as @runix18 says I understand it's critical to check the pin layout, Thanks Guys I saw a cable on eBay but he wants too much for shipping and I ended buying a RTX 3080 for my Clevo

I just tried GTX 980 and RX 6600 XT and both gave 8 beeps after cMos reset. I reinstalled GTX 680 and set up BIOS and it is downloading NVidia grephics, it will normally update 2 old graphic drivers then I will install the latest for the card. I bought this m17xr4 in 2022 not knowing all the details about the 120hz 3D screen. In 2012 at microcenter when I purchased my m18xr2 the sales guy said "no you don't want that one" speaking about the 3D 120hz m17xr4 and led me over to the m18xr2 which I still upgrade and use daily. ?????????? what was with the 3D??????? I now know!

Lets make sure we are on the same page, I am talking about the 3d screen that requires the Nvidia 3D Vision glasses to watch video and games in 3D. It is literally 3 dimensional when wearing the glasses. My m17xr4 120hz 3D screen can do this. Is this what you are trying to achieve? This is why I am having such a hard time trying to upgrade to a better screen
-
@ssj92 knows more about it, he told me something about the screen being EDP and the cards not being able to support it. I do want to upgrade both laps with better screens but it seems beyond my knowledge. I've looked at alot of screens but felt I went down the rabbit hole. So I put it on the back burner. Your post gave me some hope but this really needs to be researched, I don't want to have a box of screens like I do GPU cards and CPU's

Thanks @runix18 that will help, I can get that cable and then figure out how to connect it to Alienware MOBO

I tried RTX 3000, GTX 1080, GTX 980/970 and P4000 in m17xr4 with 120hz 3D screen and always got 8 beeps. It is not possible to run in SG mode. Only in PEG because of the 3D screen. The other m17xr4 with 1600x900 screen runs all those cards in SG mode only. To run it in PEG would need GTX 880m or lower.

I have an m17x r4 with 120hz 3D screen- i7-3940xm and GTX 680m and am unable to upgrade the GPU. It will not accept anything I have tried in SG or PEG or IGFX. It has A11 unlocked BIOS and was told that I can only use what it came with for the GPU. I would love to get this to work with an RTX card. The screen is beautiful, crisp and love using it. The 680m overclocks nice and its fun but just so limited for upgrading. I don't know about the screen you are looking at or any other screen but I would love to upgrade this m17xr4 or my other m17xr4 that has a 1600x900 screen. Will keep watching as to how you progress. I have searched the NBR archives but can't get any real direction Here is Dells description 1RM5W Module,Liquid Crystal Display,17.3FHD,White Light Emitted Diode,3D,M17XR4 1 GN36T Liquid Crystal Display,17.3,Full High Definition,White Light Emitted Diode,True Life,3D,Secondary 1 JXVT0 ACC,GRPHC,NVIDIA, GLAS,3D 1

Sorry I made that other post, but he had a make an offer so I punched in $30 and it went through, I have to thank you for making this post cause some of the sellers have them at $100 and I think thats nuts but there are others relatively cheaper -

I just looked on eBay https://www.ebay.com/itm/166500595240?epid=22063460046&itmmeta=01HRDBP0TEYRGEPWHVBJ73VJ5H&hash=item26c4357628:g:~m0AAOSw12Zle7V1&itmprp=enc%3AAQAIAAAA4HP2QsnfLorPPWpSmZkPt0P7GOp6SDJuHI9nqUx58Vv1vvnjX0pjJ66qs8nmnl0zSoqm9MxAgbS0zv1H7kTi6NKgMwis%2FVCdwM78iXlKXA7g%2Fxve5pNOjG0%2B1pnoLtYv6W0V6RPJQrFPW%2Bwp3ALJO990K4o%2B1md1AvexiL8ANOs2LDiw47WfORmvt4ZU9FaaTnE8k%2BVx6yUwVUvXArDpp8zPMjhGFIZZSzsDeKoA%2Bf2Fu378L9I9zaMt38Usqc1Xa%2FybOKJpIIAAVMLyfJYInpUyz9YqjiRM4POeMO6dxbMB|tkp%3ABFBMrI3Yq8Nj You better get it before I do. So today I am officially declaring an end to my multiyear experiment. I read on a popular Geek site, years ago not to update your drivers in device manager. They said let windows update your devices, windows knows what it is doing. So on and off over the years I would and wouldn't during system renewals or recoveries update and not update. Today after 4 BSOD's I loaded iobit drive booster and updated what it could for free and went to techpowerup downloaded latest Visual-C-Runtimes-All-in-One-Feb-2024, xnafx40_redist.msi, oalinst.exe and did Firestrike like 6 or 7 times in a row and getting the number 1 top slot for my class in the world! 17-3920XM, RTX 3000 mobile on my 12 year old m18x r4 13 277 RTX 3000 i7-3920XM M18xR2 So lets break out our relics and beat this HAHA -

Usually I find them on eBay but the lower priced ones are rare, some of the sellers think they have gold. I have paid as much as $55 U.S.D. -
I need a power cable and can only find for the Clevo cards they will not fit the GTX 1080 card and how do I match up to plug into the MoBo? I do see a plug here but have no idea what its for or how to match up a cable

Hey @Falinov I see you have a Aetina GTX 1080 in m17xr4, does it have a power cable plugged in and where would it plug into? I have a Aetina GTX 1080 and can't get it to work properly, kept getting code 43 and moved on to other failing projects

I thought I saw someone put ssd's in the express card slot. They might have tried NVME ssd m.2 but if its possible to put a msata wouldn't seem such a waste of nvme m.2 power. I can understand not using the pcie adapter for nvme m.2 just for storage, defeats the purpose of nvme. But msata even though it is slower can run a system but not sure again from the express card slot
-
You can put in an mSATA and boot from it. I hate the HDD flat ribbon cable too. I purchased like 3 of them and think I am down to 1 which is in the m18xr2 now. Had a real bad experience about 2 year's ago I must have bumped a corner of the cable and my ssd"s lost and corrupted data and files. Really freaked me out to the point I put all 2tb hdd's in and ran the system off the mSATA. I switched out the mSATA and went to a SATA ssd for the main but still run the 2tb hdd's even 1 in the DVD caddy. But having the adapter just for storage can make up for not using that flat ribbon cable.

Just a thought, maybe a BIOS update, I am running A11 unlocked on all my Alienware's. These were first meant to allow 900 series cards back in the day. Never had a problem but Dell always has critical to update but always thought that was for some malware code or security advisory and never had any problem with that. Any body know if there are any BIOS for these newer cards? Do we need to track down SVl7 and give us an updated BIOS?
