OMG, the text rendering problem... it's worse that ever now, LOL. Going back to the 2021 driver. It is even happening in Chrome a little bit now and it only used to happen in Micro$lop Office applications before. In Chrome (posting this information) the missing characters only lag for maybe half a second, so it is only a little bit problematic. At least I can tell what I am typing, but in Office... yeah, worse now than what I show in the above video. Yeah, it is an awesome feature in EVGA BIOS. It should be expected as a basic feature on all enthusiast motherboards. It is inexcusable that a ROG mobo doesn't have the option. It is as easy as selecting "disabled" on the menu for it, and rebooting with the EVGA BIOS. You can get ASUS BIOS mods with the ME removed physically. I think ASUS telemetry and spyware would be broken with it disabled and we know they need that telemetry cancer to survive. Not only is it a security risk for anyone that cares (I don't) it impairs performance. With Intel ME disabled I almost never see Intel Watchdog Timer error when I am overclocking to the edge of functionality. The Intel ME "manages" some things that I do not want anyone to manage but me. My hardware components do not need to "talk" to one another and I think things work better when they can't. Prema BIOS also had the option to disable Intel ME on the X170.

I had a hunch you would end up feeling that way. I used to love ASUS firmware, but they have made such a mess of so many things it's not even funny. They've screwed up their firmware, too. There are a few conflicting settings (especially true with AMD firmware) and a level of weirdness they never had in the past. I really do not like the ROG BIOS at all on the Strix Z690 and it's basically the same menus and features as the Apex with a few minor exceptions. The MSI and EVGA firmware are both very straightforward and do not have obscure settings. ASUS also fails to provide an option for disabling the Intel ME, which really sucks. I am not sure what some users are finding wrong with 3DMark. Seems fine to me. In fact, my GPU score in Time Spy is greater than ever. Overclocked, the GPU is still pulling lot of power, showing 750W+ from the wall per my Kill-A-Watt meter. Hotspot temperature is still being (mis)reported over 100°C (which I believe is wrong since the GPU core max is below 70°C). Everything with 3DMark seems normal or better. New driver is on the left. (Ignore Physics score as the benchmark on the right is 6.0GHz and the one on the left from just now is 5.7GHz.) I just do not see any way that the hotspot temp can actually be what is reported. The delta from other related temperatures is too great for that to be accurate.

AMD drivers have been a mess since AMD purchased ATi. For years... literally. This GPU is fun to overclock. It is also frustrating. But, it is not as locked down as modern NVIDIA cards. While it is a pain in the butt, I can do things with it using the MPT that I can't do on a stock NVIDIA GPU in terms of performance tweaks. It's not anywhere near the quality (hardware or driver) or overall performance as a competing GeForce card, but there is some merit to having some fun with it versus accepting the cookie cutter crippled product that NVIDIA represents today. Unless I use LN2 (which I am not going to do) I am not going to gain any benching points using the 3090. It has taken me as far as it is going to, but it is a MUCH better product with superior drivers. If I had to choose between Red and Green, the Green card would win without question. What would be really awesome is if we could tweak the performance of a 4090 in ways that I can tweak the 6900 XT. It is sad that we can't.

OK, so I made a Macrium image of my crash dummy OS installation so I can test the new driver without having to clean up a mess after the fact. No, nothing like that. Never any functional or performance issues. I have had it clash with some things (components) because of where the DIMM.2 module is placed next to the memory modules. Depending on how important looks are, it can also clash aesthetically with your memory modules. I would just prefer to have them in the normal place on a modern motherboard. Much cleaner and neater near the PCIe slots under heat sinks that take up no extra space anywhere else. It's putting worthless unused/wasted space to good use when they are in the normal place. Out of sight, out of mind, out of the way. I did have an ASUS mobo that the DIMM.2 slot stopped working and had to be RMA'd, as ASUS have had QC issues in the past with bad memory DIMM slots at well. I think it is their super-duper robot soldering machine army that is so awesome, except for when it isn't.

Awesome. Looking forward to seeing what they are. Be careful. I don't know why (it makes no sense at all to me) but it seems like ASUS CPU socket pins are easier to bend than any other brand. Maybe it is just coincidence that it seems that way, and it is one of their famous excuses for denying warranty support. The DIMM.2 feature is nice. They always worked well for me, but I would prefer to have the M.2 drives in the normal spot if I had the option of choosing. I don't really like having them next to the memory slots. There are some drawbacks to it. It was really cool as a geeky novelty feature when I had my first ASUS mobo with DIMM.2 though.

The average gamer has absolutely zero knowledge about how a Kingpin GPU is different than the mass production trash. It is truly tragic that there are no more of them in our future. Can you imagine what a holy terror a 4090 Kingpin would be with unlocked core voltage, LLC, memory voltage, etc? It would be utterly insane, and nothing else on the market would be able to touch it. It's really nuts that Brother @Papusan hasn't received the firmware and software he deserves for his HOF 4090.

I suppose I could do a Macrium Reflect backup before testing the new driver. I need this to be reliable since it is my work PC. AMD software/drivers put deep hooks into the OS very much like the ASUS Armory Crate cancer feces. After using Revo and DDU I still found trash running in the background from AMD and using Autoruns to disable that made my OSes on the benching rig unbootable with BSOD. I had to restore old Macrium images from before installing the 6900 XT to get rid of the stuff. It really pissed me off, but thank God I had the Macrium images.

Since gaming is not very important to me, and I don't play the games mentioned in the release notes, I think I will pass. The December 2021 driver seems to have resolved my Micro$lop Office text rendering problems and it benches well, so newer drivers probably won't do anything special for me. Newer drivers for anything seldom makes me happy, so I will just stay where I am now and enjoy having things working as intended. The notion that lowering 3DMark scores is going to be OK seems laughable to me. That's not a good option as far as I am concerned. Playing "Meet Your Maker" and "The Last of Us: Part 1" must be really important to some people.

Using cable extensions is kind of silly when doing so is avoidable, and adds multiple opportunities for failure. Best to just buy a cable rather than using an extension whenever possible. The difference in cost is small, and the quality is much better, with fewer opportunities for user error.

Sketchy adapters are always something to be cautious about. Poorly made adapters can cause far more issues than they solve, and I have had a few that ended up going back for a refund or tossed into the trash. One of these being poorly made could cause the same issue as not plugging in the cable properly (i.e. fire or melted terminals). Looking at how these are constructed, and given their solid brand reputation, I suspect they will be as reliable as necessary. It took them a good while to release the adapters, so I would hope that means the time was spent for R&D/testing. They even incorporate a thermal solution.

The highly flexible 12VHPWR "ribbon cable" that came with my Corsair RM1200x SHIFT PSU is awesome and they should all be made like that. I love that it is flat and all of the wires are attached rather than individual (like a ribbon cable).

Definitely not a gimmick, unless you have a 12VHPWR cable with a factory right angle made into it, assuming the right angle is pointing the desired direction. I am not sure there are any. I have only seen cables with straight connectors on the ends. This type of adapter allows you to route the cable the way you want it, in a tighter space and without compromising the cable or connecor. It is no different than buying cables with 90° ends on them, which I already do for the reasons of convenience, ergonomics and preserving cable integrity. I have HDMI, DP and USB cables and adapters with both 90° and 180° ends on them. Given the issues we have seen with putting sharp bends in the 12VHPWR cables near the GPU, this has value to add there as well when there is not sufficient space between the GPU and side panel. Let's use my current setup as the example. I cannot route the 12VHPWR cable behind the GPU return line due to the severe sharp bend it would require. While I have enough space to not kink the cable, it lightly touches the door. With the adapter, I will be able to have it positioned behind the tubing, rather than in front of it, pointing straight down into the case. The benefits are evident for both application and aesthetics. That is very strange. Interesting video, but it seems there is no explanation at this point. If I had to guess, something is wrong with the Indium alloy. I doubt the CPU could get hot enough to melt it if the composition of the solder TIM were proper. The air pockets are also very weird. Perhaps something unusual happened in the manfacturing process that allow the CPU and/or IHS to get contaminated before soldering. I know the fab process has to be spotless and climate controlled.

Sometimes inexpensive things can be very useful. I got tired of pulling and plugging cords into outlets. It must be only sporadic that it is functional. First bench I ran showed the leaderboard in the app, then on the second it went dark, so it is offline in my browser and the app on both desktops and my laptop. Yes, I got it to work on a different OS. It did not want to function at all on the OS I first installed it on. But, the GPU clock runs less than half normal boost. If I force it setting the minimum clock in the Radeon CP, that works but there is no change in score or FPS. Now it mysteriously stopped working on my other desktop. I ran several without a problem with the 4090, now I just get a black background, Heaven music and a FPS counter that shows over 100K frames per second with no image rendered, LOL. I don't know what changed. Nothing I can identify. Just a buggy trash piece of software, I suppose. It is so old it looks like scores might be better stock or underclocked versus overclocked, but since it stopped working I can't test that theory. Given how it is "working" (quotes intended) I think it has no value as a benchmark now. The results are suspect. It is not designed for modern hardware or OSes and seems unreliable. Not surprising since it has not been updated since 2011.

I cannot access catzilla.com or allbenchmark.com from any of my computer web browsers. I get the "This site can't be reached" error whenever I try. Haven't tried yet. Not a huge priority. I don't expect to get enough points from it to matter too much.

Try the same settings with 1.250V or 1.300V. Nah. At the end of the day it's not worth the effort. Not going to burn any calories on broken HWBOT garbage software released in 2011, LOL. I'll try one more time on a different OS and see if it works. If not, then I will move on to something else. Works fine on the Dark with the 4090.

I've never owned memory that had two XMP profiles from the manufacturer. I have added my own second profile on DDR4 using Thaiphoon Burner, but none I have ever purchased or seen available for purchase have more than one. Maybe some of the DDR5 now have an Expo and XMP profiles. I don't know because I don't pay close attention to stuff related to Ryzen memory overclocking since it is not relevant to me. That is very possible. After asking the question, I installed it on the Z690 Dark and it functions normally. The 6900 XT also doesn't boost into performance mode. It is in some kind of in-between state about half of the normal 3D clock running the HWBOT version of Heaven.
