Looks like I'm not going insane. I've gotten back to playing Far Cry 5 (barely started the game before I started Control), and decided to do a performance comparison between my X170 and my desktop again since I could not believe how much of a performance difference there was between the two machines in Control.

As a reminder, both my X170 and my desktop have the same CPU model, a 10900K. The other specs are as follows:

GPU: RTX 2080 Super vs 6950 XT

RAM: 3200 MHz CL 16 vs 4000 MHz CL 15 (so 10ns latency vs 7.5 ns latency for access times)

Both 10900Ks were clocked at 3.7 GHz in this performance comparison.

Settings:

X170 Performance:

Desktop Performance:

image.thumb.png.259961e75014611e488346cebc078252.png

Another massive difference in performance (101 FPS vs 144 FPS) between the 2 machines in another game!

I also find it really weird how the 10900K in my X170 is consuming so much more power while running at the same frequency. I killed as many background processes as I could. Must be something up with the power plan, although the 10900K in my desktop usually tends to consume significantly less power than the one in my X170 anyway. I know lower voltages due to the better binned 10900K in my desktop plus much better cooling decreasing electrical resistance are playing a significant role, but it seems like there's more to it than that.

In any case, Far Cry 5 seems to love fast memory and an AMD GPU, just like Control. I wonder how many of my other games will behave this way. Only one way to find out!

I am not able to enlarge the images enough that text becomes legible. They remain as thumbnails even if I right click and open in a new browser tab.

Edit: it looks as if you uploaded them to the forum rather than an image hosting service. That is why. The forum resizes them to save space and basically ruins the images.

Cap Frame X is wonderful software, but it is not a native in-game benchmark.  I mention this for the benefit of anyone reading that is not familiar with it. I do prefer a native in-game benchmark when one exists. It is unfortunate that it is not mandatory that all published games include a benchmark tool that runs a very specific scene like those that do. I think the ability to do comparisons between systems is better that way. It levels the playing field much better.

no worries mate. good to hear about ur stability, feel free to throw ur settings my way 😄 currently still tuning my 6200 timings, on the cusp of overtaking my previous best results with the 6600 kit and still a looot of timings to tune, looking promising!

I have done zero tweaking with Ram settings yet. All I have done is set the voltage correctly, and enabled Expo/XMP.

Edit: I do not think its stable even passing 10 loops of memtest 64.

While trying to decompress a 100gb file, it will error out. Tried several times, and checked file integrity multiple times, yet it would not decompress. Decided to check if the IMC was at fault, and sure enough, I lowered the RAM speed to 6600, and the file decompressed without issues.

That's all interesting. But moving forward does anyone have an update on paps crocs. Will they be used for walking or dancing. Will they be black or Will they be blue. I honestly get stir crazy waiting for updates on crocs. I wonder if crocs can even be used for dancing. Because I could really use something with stunning looks and incredible versatility such as black crocs or maybe the elegance and style of bright pink crocs. At any rate keep us posted and perhaps a few pictures of the crocs to tide us all over till Christmas

not sure if this is why you get crocs but its a prime example of just how versatile they are

Are Crocs good for dancing?

Festival, Concert, and Rave Shoes

Whether its Coachella or Lollapalooza, Crocs has styles to match the vibe. Our comfortable and waterproof mens and womens crocs are perfect for standing and dancing all day, rain or shine.

Also If your into benchmarking desktops, crocs are excellent for cooling as they lower room temperatures by up to a whopping 10c

Should be no problem dance with them😀

A bad sample of 1070. The Strix ain't near my old dead Gigabut. And I got the Micron memory. So, thanks Asus. I forgot ask what mem this 1070 had. I take that on me. But not the loosy cores. Oh'well. I can still sell it on the used market for the same as I paid for it. That's something 🙂

Your 1070 is getting close to what I get with my 3060. Is that overclocked with air? I'm strongly thinking a used 3090 desktop is the way to go after seeing other members results at 4k. I'm going intel.nvidia but I'm not buying until boxing day no rush. Pity this 3060 only lasted 2 years

Are you manually adjusting the PCH voltage for your Apex z790? I just saw that option in tweaker paradise.

I haven't on the Apex or the Dark. I did on the Unify-X and Strix Z690 motherboards. It didn't really make much difference when I did. Enabling the ASPM and DMI power management that are disabled by default was the only thing that made a meaningful improvement.

Hmmm... another half-a$$ed GPU with the Strix branding. Am I surprised? Nope. The name no longer means anything. I think ASUS only does things well by accident. It is difficult to respect them as a company anymore. Poor QC, severely overpriced and horrible warranty service. Should be a deadly 3-strike failure, but the fanboys keep the brand alive in spite of the shortcomings.

My oldest son bought an ROG Thor 1200W Psu a month before my vacation. Dead on arrival 1 day after he started use it. Weird problems as no boot and suddenly shut downs. No consistency. I advised him to test with his older PSU. The machine started work properly again. I said… Buy an BeQuiet or an Corsair 1500i.

Sad there is so few good 2 mem slots board. But not keen on Gigabyte. And Evga is a no go. What have we left? Assuuuus. I’ll take the chance on the coming Z790 Apex refresh. No other options I can see. My oldest son will get my board and the 13900K for free because he took care of our dog while me and my wife were in Canary. What other options do I have? And I don’t want jump on a old Z690 Unify-X from MSI. Soon it will be harder find good options for desktops. Almost as the BGA junked jokebooks. Aka no options. Only trash.

I do not understand all of the Asus hatred, if something happens it’s gonna happen😂. That GTX1070 seems okay right? I mean, GPU’s are a lottery especially on air cooling right? You may or may not get good overclocking memory IC’s, you may have a weak GPU. But it’s still performing with a stock GTX1080 🙂

Most of these “Strix” or other high end GPU’s offer one thing, and one thing only. And that’s “Cool and quiet performance” or “Non rattling noises” 😂 The rest is a gamble. How good is the core? How good is the memory? It’s all in luck. I don’t Asus bins anything in a Strix, they just use good marketing and have a big following.

It’s luck in everything these days. Your PSU may suck, your motherboard, your GPU lol.

I need to be careful not to jinx myself by saying something, but the Z790 Apex is the only ASUS enthusiast product I have owned that hasn't been a piece of garbage or failed. It is almost as good as the Z690 Dark. Hopefully it will last. Every other flagship part I have purchased from ASUS has been trash or died. That is the reason for the hate. It was earned. The sad part is their budget and mid-range gamer stuff has been reliable (Prime and Strix mobos) but kind of mediocre in terms of features, performance and build quality.

If that's not enough, if you have a warranty claim with them that will push you over the edge. Slow and painful, and they treat you like it is inconvenient to make things good on your expensive product that failed. You'll be down for a month or more unless you buy something else to replace it.

True, but one bad experience is quite different than multiple bad experiences, and the repeated lousy warranty fulfillment experiences are like soft-serve feces on top of the dung flavored cupcake. Whether it's because I am foolishly optimistic, or just a fool, ASUS has been given way too many second chances. Nobody can say I haven't given them a fair shake. The count of products I have registered in my ASUS account (only one of which I still own in terms of mobos and GPU) proves otherwise.

But, as Brother @Papusansuggested "What other choice do you have?" None if you want a 2-DIMM current generation motherboard. So the option is to roll the dice, clench your butt and hope for the best. When it comes to graphics cards and other products, no they are not even open for discussion at this point. EVGA is no longer in the business, otherwise they would be my first pick for everything they sell.

If and when the day comes that I decide to go with Z890, my first pick would be a Unify-X. Ultimately I will have to settle for whatever options exist in a 2-DIMM board. I won't buy a 4-DIMM model no matter what the brand is.

If and when the day comes that I decide to go with Z890, my first pick would be a Unify-X. Ultimately I will have to settle for whatever options exist in a 2-DIMM board. I won't buy a 4-DIMM model no matter what the brand is.

First. Asus should have never ever used Micron mem chips on Strix in the 10xx series. And as a footnote... 99% of all reviews of 1070 Strix use Samsung memory dies. And Asus didn't offer maxed out TGP as some other 1070 flagship cards. Why do that with their best xx70 cards they have in their huge portefolio of cards? Same cooler and pcb as their xx80Ti cards but castrate their flagship in same way as the other brands cheapo low end cards from same SKU series. That's perverse! The cards cooling can easly handle 350W power consumption. And why not offer dual 8-pins power connectors as som of the better xx70 cards? Because they wanted to cut cost?

2nd. Not even sure Msi will bother with 2 mem boards. Why did they scrap that models for firs gen Z790 boards? They cater to the gamer kids. And why didn't MSI want offer 600W vbios? Why did they take away/remove the first vbios version that come with 600W and replaced it with vbios that offer lower TGP than the Nvidia FE cards for their best high end cards? I don't trust whats coming from MSI. They are equal disgusting as ASSUUUS.

3rd. More stupid from ASUS... https://videocardz.com/newz/asus-rog-strix-rtx-4090-eva-02-edition-debuts-in-us-at-2299

This is perverse! ASUS spread their so called better* chips on 3 different versions of same Strix cards now. With the Matrix it will be 4 cards. Then you have the water cooled cards. So the best binned chips will be spread around 6 different high end 4090 cards. ASUS has become the worst HW lottery you can think of. $2299 for a ugly card is awful. Maybe they want $300 more because very few want the Red Ugly card. But what do I know:classic_rolleyes:

After seeing retail in China, the ASUS ROG STRIX Evangelion GeForce RTX 4090 was finally listed on Newegg, with a premium "$2,299" price tag. To give you an idea about the variant's pricing, it is almost a bump of 70% from the GPU's original MSRP. Yup, 70% premium for a Puke show. The world have gone crazy.

Lack of good options is awful. And this now apply especially for MB and GPU's. I feel almost as I have went back to Jokebooks aera.

Back in the GTX series era, I was going through some GPU’s. I remember getting a RX480 right on launch, and it was very FAST! It had this abnormally high ASIC quality of 97 or 98% and it was just an excellent overclocker(I can’t remember what the ASIC meant). It screamed value competing with a GTX980 “Almost” though, and my sample was really good.

It was short lived, as I got a GTX1070 on launch, mine had Samsung memory chips though but it was hit or miss (Earlier GTX1070 models usually had Samsung chips) I then got a GTX1080FE the following week which had Micron because it used the binned GDDR5X chips. I loved my GTX1080FE. I shunt modded it, and it was a real performer. This was my first time getting a high end GPU during a launch period. And I played lots of upscaled 4K content at 30-40FPS no problems at all.

The count of products I have registered in my ASUS account (only one of which I still own) proves otherwise.

See, I feel this way about EVGA. Constant problems. Every EVGA motherboard I have owned, something stopped working. Other motherboard issues occurred as well. I just dealt with the problems and lived with it. Their power supplies are a disaster also. Then their GPU’s were popping during that Amazon game “New World” EVGA X-ray revealed and their own words “Poor workmanship”

Just the other day, I saw a guy who had the same PSU as mine in his signature. I had to ask, “Does it squelch when gaming?” His response. “yep” 🙂 I’ve tossed around the idea of another RMA. But, I don’t want to play lottery.

My current EVGA GPU is a winner though it’s perfect in every way. No coil whine. And very very reliable. But I think it all comes down to any of us being generally unlucky, and who’s unlucky with what brand lol.

Would I buy another EVGA product?

ABSOLUTELY, Yes! Because I like them.

It is interesting how different experiences can be. My first, second and third EVGA motherboards were replacements for failed ASUS motherboards that took more than a month to get replaced under warranty. I have owned only three EVGA power supplies and none had any issues. One 850W G (gold) PSU and two 1600W SuperNova P2 (Platinum) and never any issues. I did have the Q-code led fail on the Z590 Dark, but it still functioned correctly as a product. It took 3 business days, zero downtime, and cost me nothing (cross-ship RMA). It would have taken 3 to 6 weeks to get it replaced by ASUS and I would have incurred the shipping cost to send the product to them. Chances are also good they would come up with a lame excuse to deny warranty, like bent CPU socket pins that were not bent when sent, or a speck of thermal paste on the PCB or edge of the CPU socket (not in the pins) as we have seen more than once by people we know.

My experience with EVGA has been stellar, and of such high satisfaction that it would be difficult to say I am not a fanboy. Perfect? No. But, excellent because the products and service are both superior. I am very sad they are going under. My passion for high performance computers may actually be ending because of it. I am not sure it is worth the hassle having to deal with nonsense from other brands.

Speaking of 4K gaming, I think I met my annual quota for gaming. In typical Mr. Fox fashion, I hardly ever play games, but when I do I binge on something I like. Most of the time it is play for an hour or less, lose interest and uninstall the title to make drive space for something I like.

Yesterday I binged on Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War. The price finally fell to a point I was willing to pay ($20). I installed it and played the entire campaign from start to finish in one day. It was buttery smooth on my 4K 144Hz ASUS display. (Yes, it is a good ASUS product. There are a few.) Set on max quality settings with my CPU set at 59x on P-cores, 47x on E-cores, 50x cache ratio and memory at 8200, with 4090 at stock clocks +100mV and max power limits averaging ~225 FPS, often over 300 FPS. Cold War used 13GB of system memory and 16GB of VRAM to deliver a top notch experience.

This is also another example of mixed experiences. I have almost every COD release and have thoroughly enjoyed every single title in the franchise. But, many people don't like COD.

I enjoy the COD campaigns!! I will set the hardest difficulty. And it usually takes me a week to get through. It’s so much fun. Being on hardest difficulty, you retry things over and over and over again. And it stretches the play time and dollar without re-playing through something. I have not bought those new ones yet. But I beat the regular COD MWF2 campaign from 2021 or 2022. It was fantastic.

Speaking of EVGA, they are sending me a new thermal pad kit for my 3090KP HC 🙂 their thermal pads are great. And my warranty is almost expired, so it’s liquid

Metal time. This service is so convenient because I don’t have to go research pad size and waste $50-$60 dollars lol.

Yeah, I have to agree that MSI caters to gamers more than overclocking enthusiasts. Unfortunately, I am not sure that it would be less than accurate to say the same applies to ASUS, ASROCK and Gigabyte.

I loved the Unify-X, but it is the only MSI motherboard I have owned and can't legitimately comment about their track record for reliability. I know Brother @johnkssshad a bumpy ride with his Unify-X. I had to RMA my first and brand new Unify-X because the BIOS update applied on day one bricked it. I had NewEgg swap it out. No issues at all after that.

The sad reality is an EVGA Dark mobo is no longer a future option and almost anything else is repulsive to me. I was also puzzled why MSI did not release a Z790 Unify-X, but the bottom line is that Z790 was a pointless product. It was created to make something to sell. It is architecturally the same product as Z690 with some features removed. In some respects Z790 was a downgrade. The only reason many Z790 boards overclock memory better is the motherboard manufacturers shift all of their attention to the new product. My Z690 Dark overclocks memory as good or better than the Z790 Apex, and we know that the Z690 Apex was a failure because of ASUS's incompetence, not because it was Z690 chipset. Because Z790 was not an actual upgrade, perhaps MSI decided it was a waste of time and resources to release a Z790 Unify-X. I'd probably agree with them.

I have never tried playing COD titles with a lower spec'd system. I have always found Crysis and COD titles to play extremely well, while many people complain. But, I do not buy low- and mid-range PC components and I always try to have far more CPU, GPU and memory system resources than what is necessary.  Perhaps that is why I have never seen any reason to complain about them.

Awesome that EVGA can send that stuff to you. Are they sending thermal putty as well? I bought some from them for the 3090 KPE once, but it was no longer in stock the next time I tried to buy a tube of it.
