Yeah I don't understand why Intel went the hybrid route on consumer CPUs when they didn't do the same thing on their server class CPUs. It seems very strange to me.

Didn't you know? Regular consumers are all about power efficiency and since Apple and their Mx architecture is all about big/little cores.......

((Insert eyeroll HERE))

These full on bifurcated (Intel) and partially bifurcated (AMD) designs give me angina....

Easy-peasy. Because LGA desktop processors are in short Mobile silicon glued on PCBs for desktops. Unisex, you know. One fit all and you can reduce costs.

@Mr. Fox Just can't get enough of seeing disgusting modern.....

But here it is... How it goes if you pare disgusting🤮 The top part is the Mobile part. Then guess what's the desktop part of this unisex Aphrodite😎

I was super curious too. I am curious how high you could overclock the cores, if you reduced some of them, say down to 12-16P cores. You'd still have all that cache too which could be super useful for gaming. 6800 in quad channel would also be epic.

https://www.provantage.com/intel-bx807132565x~7ITEP9FM.htm -- Provantage has the boxed version in stock for $1423

The "War Box" lol.

Thanks, much better prices from them for sure. Kinda expensive to build one of these though. I wish the new stripped down Asrock 2.0 boards were available as promised for their $499.99 price. I was able to find a great deal on ram though. All of this is just a little too rich for my blood. Let me tell me wife I require it real quick. 🤣

W790 Motherboard: $840

Xeon 2565X CPU 18/36: $1400

4x16GB DDR5 6000c32: $296

$2,500 for a budget build on Sapphire Rapids. CPU/Mobo/Ram only. 😆

Looking very good. Say hello to the new old for the old man... MSI GTX770 Lightning. The card looks almost brand new. Not a scratch. Only some dust in the fin stack And the thermal paste has never been changed. Because the warranty sticker on the screw has not been touched. The card have been used until now aka 11 years before he switched over on a new card.

770-Lightning.jpg

The warranty sticker is clean and nice. And the GPU Reactor which is the older MSI Lightning's trademark looks pristine🙂

770-Lightning-1.jpg

Now I have two old MSI Lightning cards for my GPU collection. The one in front in the box is the older GTX680 Lightning. They both are exactly the same cards with (same cooler, shroud, fans, GK104 die and PCB). No changes here from MSI. The only difference is the faster vram for the newer gen 700 series nvidia cards. Never change the cooler and the design if you don't need or have to @Mr. Fox

TWINS.jpg

Edit. Opposite to greedy Asus, Msi offer 5 heat pipes and secondary metal heatsink with pads that cools the memory chips for their best older cards. Asus went with wimpy 3 pipes and no cooling for the vram. Hmmm. Asus couldn't even offer you 2x8 pins for the 770 series. How much did they save going this cheapo?

The greedy stinker... Asus

It's about time for the fall hardware liquidation. I opened back up my ebay store and I plan to start listing items this week, but I'll be listing some items on the forums too. I think I'm going to sell off my 4090 or 7900xtx along with my NH55 along with the 12400 desktop, 7600x desktop and oodles of little parts here and there along with a couple of 12900k chips, some sodimm kits and maybe some other parts as I dig through my shelves and closet.

If anyone is interested on our little cozy thread first, let me know

Funny how things work out sometimes. Sold the 3090 to float the house until I get paid, get paid and the bank declines my purchase for the PowerColor Red Devil 7900 XTX. I decide to buy a 6900 XT Red Devil and a day later trade it for a 7900 XTX Red Devil. Instead of 1100 after tax from Amazon, out of pocket cost is 700. Which is about what I sold the 3090 for to begin with.

I have already downloaded the Liquid Devil vBIOS so I can apply the 550w power limit instead of the 430w this card comes with.

Card is of course already overclocked.

Power Limit +15 - 3Ghz Core / 2750 memory

32c idle and usually around 50-55c load

I do see what people tend to whine about with a 90w idle power consumption. I really dont care about that though

Havent ran any benchmarks yet, just enjoying some games on a rare day off since I started the new gig.

Good things happening for good people. That's awesome @Reciever! Red Devil really is a good card. Like I said before, top 3 design IMHO (Red Devil, Sapphire, Asrock) and a killer price to boot!

Congratulations. It's unfortunate that you had to sell the 3090 to float the house, but you ended up mostly recovered and nearly in as good shape as you started. Who would trade at 6900 XT for a 7900 XTX? That is great for you, but puzzling that someone would do that. Are they nuts?

This morning I saw this video talking about an improvement Asus is using to make 4-DIMM DDR5 able to reach higher speeds. I still think that two slots is more appropriate for the majority of systems these days.

Im thinking about building something different. No doubt the 285K is fast. I might build an old school Xeon 3175X with a Dominus Extreme, or newer W790 with a Asus Sage board and a Xeon 2565X.

I know Asus doesn’t always make the best products, and some won’t buy their products. But I have to give Asus credit for their continued support on enthusiast motherboards. Even after years pass by, they will still release updates and new bios.

Thanks! I went ahead and ordered (6) of them. I am gonna use one as a door stopper in my new house. They look pretty beefy so I figure they’d hold the door open pretty dang well.

This morning I saw this video talking about an improvement Asus is using to make 4-DIMM DDR5 able to reach higher speeds. I still think that two slots is more appropriate for the majority of systems these days.

The better solution would be for them to just stop making 4-DIMM motherboards for gamers and overclocking enthusiasts. They should not even exist. Then they would not need to develop this new slot design.  If they were doing things right, it would be extremely rare, or not at all, to find a 4-DIMM "enthusiast" motherboard. It is almost an oxymoron to say "4 DIMM enthusiast motherboard" LOL.

Good things happening for good people. That's awesome @Reciever! Red Devil really is a good card. Like I said before, top 3 design IMHO (Red Devil, Sapphire, Asrock) and a killer price to boot!

Team Red meets every Thursday at the local Dennys. 🙂

Thanks. Yeah its been a fun card so far. I could've just bought another RTX 3090 but I didnt want to go through the hassle of hunting for a bargain just to go back to a near 4 year old card. Not wanting to replace my PSU, and given the price point, the 7900 XTX seemed to be the best choice. Not that there is a lot of choices with the current product stacks.

Nice it worked out for you🙂

Regarding the whining about high Idle power consumption... The modern gamers/consumers trusted all too much on our old friend, the good liar F. Azor

You just can't trust any (car) sellers. Especially not the former Dell AW boss Mr. Azor😎

For me gaming is primary and benching secondary but regardless of that whining about 100w in a developed country is a bit much. If you are in a country where power isnt reliable or absurdly expensive it makes some sense to whine about it. The problem becomes then why did you buy this card?

Did you see @tps3443 has his Z790 Apex motherboard for sale at oc.net for a VERY good price?

He is in good company with a fellow dumb-dumb Gordon Mydung at his side. Both silly boys and both prone to telling lies when it is to their advantage.

I asked them the same thing, as there are some definitive red flags for someone trading down. Looks like this guy bought a property and has been renovating it for the better part of a year. Its been taking a bit longer than expected and also has a newborn so its been an overall priority shift from motorcycles, PC's and big trucks to Honda Pilot, civic and getting the house done for the family.

He was happy to go from the Red Devil he had to another Red Devil though and we streamed some gameplay and sent each other the SN's of the cards so we both knew what we were getting.

EDIT:

The one thing I can say though is that the out of box differential between the Core Temp and Hotspot is pretty bad. 65c core temp and 101-105c hotspot.

Though I have read that a repaste should fix that, I have some NTH2 so I think I just need to figure out what pads to go with.

Looks like an fantastic chips for the single thread Jockey's. Intel can for the second time beat Apple in benchmarks that matters for tomorrows computer users. See... Many of they have never ever owned or experienced an real single core Intel Cpu from several decades ago. Now they can come close to have one. The single core performance will be amacing for their computer tasks 🤔

Had the same issue on my 7900xtx, and found the waterblock screws had come loose a bit. I repasted and reassembled, and it's went back to acceptable temps.

It is a known issue with the Red Devil 7900XTXs and they sometimes seem to even have issues again after a repaste on the hot spot.

Best solution is PTM 7950. It seems to address the hot spot issue and re-occuring issues.

I have not seen that issue on my Powercolor Hellhound 7900XTX. Hot spot temps top out in the 80s and that's with the stock factory stuff.

Totally expected. When you do something super-stupid, like no hyperthreading, it's going to perform like a CPU with fewer cores. The CPU isn't playing with a full deck, just like the idiots that decided hyperthreading needed to go. Stupidity of that magnitude should not be tolerated. They need to be fired, shot and thrown in a dumpster. Single-core "performance enthusiasts" deserve a similar fate. They helped create the problem.

I was going to suggest that as well. Thermal Grizzly offers this now as well in their product line. This is a good option for anything with a poorly engineered thermal solution. It won't fix product defects, but it helps when fit is a little sloppier than it should have been. And, pump-out is a problem for most GPUs even when the coolers do fit. You need to use something that stops or reduces that.
